Hello folks,
I just got a secondhand K5, no manual, and i'm loving playing with it,
but i wondered how do i get the synth to be truly multi-timbral? in that
it can play more than one sound at once using a midi sequencer, how do i
assign a different midi channel to each sound that i choose so that it
doesn't play just one sound all the time.
Thanks in advance.
Rob.
Hello Robert! I think you are the first poster here!
The K5 is 15 voice multitimbral. Here's the procedure:
Press INT (Multi)
Pick a patch
Press Edit
Press A
On the left you see the patch name
On the far right, the MIDI Channel
Next to the left is the multi mode - voice runs either as a midi voice, a
keyboard voice or both. A keyboard voice plays from the K5's keyboard only,
a MIX voice plays both, and a MIDI voice is only over MIDI.
Next to the left is the number of voices to assign. VR is Dynamic Voice
assignment.
Repeatedly pressing the A B C or D keys will access pages for all 15 voices,
5 at a time.
Pressing B gives Detune, and Transpose options for each voice, C gives MIDI
options for each voice, D gives more Midi options.
I think you need to go to the MIDI page (button on far right) to set patch
change to single, so that you can change the patches in the Multi over midi.
Another cool things you can do with the Multi is set everything to one
channel, and detune them all for a 15 voice (30 oscillators) Mono sound.
Very phat.

Hello !
I'm happy to see there are still people interested in
the K5, the first really affordable and usable
instrument featuring additive synthesis (though I
currently don't own a K5, but a K5000W...)

Hello Joel,
Thanks for that info, i'll go and try it later today, that's saved a lot
of fumffing around the keyboard. Once these voices are set to the
different midi channels isn't it a pain to try to remember what ones
you've played with and then have to go back and set them to their
default settings?
Also does anyone have or know of a true K5 editor for the PC?
Thanks again Joel.

You can save all your channel assignments as a "multi" patch - just
press write, then pick the patch to save it to by pressing the
appropriate buttons, then turn the edit dial clockwise till it says
yes. It may ask if you are sure, just select yes again!

I don't have a good photo of my K5, and my digital camera ist kaput.
So, if anyone out there has a nice digital camera, can you take some
photographs and send them to me, I'll edit and make one the official
image for the group.
Thanks
Joel
At first, congratulations to you Joel founding this new group for
Kawai K5 users. I hope that it will stay online.
It is good to see the terrible trend of vanishing information or
discussion on the net concerning K5 has now reversed and the most
overlooked Synth has a new home for discussing problems and
experiences around K5.
Since 2002 i do have the
http://www.kfuenf.org
website, which is dedicated solely to the Kawai K5.
If someone has free stuff for K5 and want to publish it there just
send an email to me or to info@... .
The only restriction is, that it should have the focus on the
K5(technique, experiences, patches, a free selfwritten editor or
sth.like that (not K5000)) or the additive synthesis of K5.
I hope that many K5 users will find this place here and can get
answers to their questions, even those who had asked me before and i
was not able to give an answer to their problems.
Greetings

How much do you want?
Do you want frontside only?
Which file format do you want(i prefer png)?
I do have a 4.1 megapixel cam, would it not be better to send
thumbnails of the pictures to you first?
Greetings
Klaus
I finally dug out my K5R after a move and discovered that I can't
access all the menu pages. I was told that maybe the ribbon cable
from the CPU to the screen had been jarred loose. Would this be easy
to fix? As I'm not technically inclined, should I take it to a tech?
Any answers would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Andy
I've finished uploading the MIDI DATA FORMAT manual for the K5, which
has all the sysex info in it. This file is in .jpg format as I don't
own an Adobe PDF writer, and the PDF writer I have doesn't compress
this thing enough to make it worthwhile.
Please note that the main K5 manual is also available in the Files
section.
Joel
Hi,
Ok, I'm very excited about seeing the replacement backlight. But does
anyone know of a source for the LCD itself ? Other than Kawai that is ?
Mine is cracked and bleeding through the middle, essentially it's
useless.
I'm fairly comfortable doing electronics hacking, but I would like to
pay as little as possible for a replacement.
I haven't really become that familiar with my K5 other than a MIDI
controller, but I love my K3, and from the enthusiastic posts here and
on the website, it's put a bee in my bonnet.
Thanks, and Thanks for the group !

I took weeks to investigate that midi messages by myself,
because i never got a copy of that MIDI DATA FORMAT manual.
Now i can be shure to have the right codes
and there are informations of midi messages i have never
got out.
Thanks for that.

I have added some links and a new file. Just in case some people
don't know, there was some really great software written years and
years ago for the K5, that runs on Atari computers under the GEM
Operating System.
In the Links section of this Yahoo group, you will find links to
everything you need to load and run an Atari ST emulator with MIDI on
your PC or Mac, and a K5 editor that runs inside the emulator.
In the Files section I have included the K5 Wavemaker by Leslie
Sanford, which is a really cool app for generating some traditional
and non-traditional waveforms and loading them into your K5
synthesizer.
This is some incredible software, and I'm quite excited to finally
have it running on my PC.
Joel
I'm new to this group, so wanted to share my experience with the K5.
I bought my K5m module on '93 in Buenos Aires, used it for two
years, then moved to Caracas. 9 years it lay on a box, until I dug
it up. It was all perfect except the LCD was dead. I opened it up
and saw a loose flat cable connector (Whew!). I then had trouble
using it in multitimbral mode, since I forgot I had to put it in
MULTI mode, selecting the individual patches and channels from the
synth, not the PC sequencer.
Really exciting moment when it all worked fine. I have a Boss DR550
drum module, and a Kawai KC-10 midi controller. Actually, the KC-10
is still in Buenos Aires, so I'm now using a lame Casio CT480 to
control the K5m (no velocity, aftertouch, pathetic.) I also got a
little 5 channel mixer to mmix audio. No effects, PC can do that.
I've written a couple of new age/techo songs with this improvised
studio. I'm not much of a professional musician, but composing with
this Kawai jewel is completely relaxing.
I'm using Turtle Beach USB MIDI cable, and Voyetra's Record
Producer MIDI. I have copies of Cakewalk, Cubase, etc, but I believe
RPMidi is enough, unless you want to add MIDI echo and stuff.
I also installed an Atari emulator and K5 Wave and K5 Pro software,
also the K5 Wave creator. All amazing software, really controls the
K5 realtime, letting you hear the sound evolve as you change the
parameters from the PC. Highly recommended!!, besides the K5 buttons
are really uncomfortable to use.
I got about 4 banks of single patches, but I'm sure there are a lot
more.
How about we all share out patches with each other? Could be using
sysex, but I really recommend using the K5 Pro format (*.K5s). I'll
try uploading the three banks I have to the Files folder. For those
who don't have K5 Pro, it's really easy to use, you can get all you
need from kfuenf.org. I got a lot of help from Klaus there.
A final question: my sustain pedal doesn't seem to work. I plugged
it into the Hold jack and nothing happens. Anything else to do on
the K5 or is the pedal plan broken?
Bye!
Capezzani, (I don't know your first name, so I hope that it doesn't sound
disrespectful to call you by your last name).
I tried out K5 edit Pro last night and Caged Artist K5 editor. I must say
that K5 editor seems to be easier to use - but I probably missed something -
K5 edit pro doesn't seem to send my edits as I make them, but I have to tell
it to send after I edit, and also, it overwrites patches instead of using an
edit buffer... but I'm sort of new to the Atari GEM thing. I probably
missed something.
---- My Atari History-----
I spent my entire teenage home life during the first half of the 1980's
writing games and graphic editors and sound makers for my Atari 400 in Basic
and 6502 assembler (anyone remember Display List Interrupts?, but I never
upgraded to the newer Atari's when they came out, and wound up as a Database
Programmer...
-------------------------------
The K5 Wave Creator - is that something that will convert .wav files to k5
spectra? I had heard of some Atari software that would do that, but I
haven't had any luck in my web searches.
Thanks
Joel

Hi,
Sorry to get a little off topic. But my K5 is hooked up to my MTP II
Anyone out there have a manual for the Mark of the Unicorn TimePiece
II ? I got for for a good price (free) and have heard it can be used
standalone. It's old style Serial mac, and All my gear is now USB.
I have an old laptop, so I suppose I could use it, but I'm really
curious about my options.
Thanks,
harry
The name is Mariano, I thought I'd appear automatically beside my
nick. ;)
You're right about the K5 Editor, it is a bit better than the K5 Pro
in that it let's you try the patch you're modifying by just clicking
the mouse on the screen (high to low from right to left, nice). The
good thing about the K5 Pro though, is that you can send a single
patch to a specific location, not always SIA-12.
Oh, and it's not K5 Wave Creator, but K5 Wave Maker (little mistake
there). You can get if from kfuenf.org, I think. It's a bit limited,
but it has some interesting features. You can even generate
waveforms based on the legendary DX7 FM synthesis. If only I could
understand the way it's done, I'm lost with those operators, and
feedback...It's not a wav-to-K5 translator (I'm still on the quest
for that filosopher's stone), and it only gives you information
related to harmonic intensity (DHG), nothing else.
Regarding my experience with Atari: only the game board, the one you
interted cartridges in (Combat, Space Invaders, etc.) I'm from '76,
so my first PC was the IBM.
Ok, see you all.

Hello,
I want to give a big "Thanks" to Joel Braveman for the nice scans of an
already hard to find manual..."Thanks".
I aquired my K5 from a music store owner who had it in the back room to be
repaired for many years but he never found the time to fix it. He calls me when
he gets in analog stuff, but I visited him the other day and he said to me "Just
take it, i'll never fix it", so he gace it to me for free. It is in very good
condition
except for the fact that 7 of the keys do not work, and i am hoping that it is
the
common key problem on the K5 that can be fixed with a good cleaning. I
found a "how to" on cleaning the contacts for the K5 keys which i may begin in
a day or so. If anyone knows the correct solvent to use or would like to give
advice i would like to hear about it.
Thanks for the manual, and thanks for the site,
enarke.
Enarke,
You are welcome! Check out the software & other things in the files and
links sections if you have a chance.
If you have time, perhaps you could post the contact cleaning info if it
isn't too large a file. I don't need it, but somebody might find it useful.

Hello,
I am posting a link to a good page that deals with a couple of Good Kawai K-5
fixes and hacks...including the free rom upgrade and LCD fix.
http://www.kfuenf.org/en/k5_hackpage.html
I figured out that if you have 8 keys "in a row" that are not working on the K-5
it
is not merely an issue of dirty contacts, it is the main board.
My particular problem i contacted Troy Reigleman at Kawai about, and spoke
with the keyboard tech there. My K-5 has 8 keys in a row that do not work, and
yet, when it is midi'ed i can play the full range of keys. This is an ominous
problem that i would have to have major brain surgery to fix. However, i also
had a lower key (a single key) that did not play that was easily fixed from a
good cleaning. The instructions to clean the contacts are at the link above. In
order to fix my K-5 it would cost me with shipping about 200.00. It would not
be that bad because i got my K-5 for free.
Anyhoo, i'll take some good digital shots of the K-5 anyway and upload them
here until i decide what im going to do.

Hello all,
I've read from previous posts that there is a way to change the
assignment of single patches within a multi, via the sequencer. I
tried setting the PGM mode to single, and changing the patch number
from the sequencer, no success. If PGM is set to multi, then the
whole multi patch changes (actually losing any changes you had
manually made to the multi :( )
Has any one done this who could shed some light?
Regards,
Hi Mariano,
The way to do this is as follows:
1. Set your program setting to Single,
2. Edit a multi.
3. Set your instruments to different midi channels.
4. Press D (WINDOW 4)
5. Set PGM to ON for each channel that you want to send patch changes to.
6. Press A (WINDOW 1)
7. Set MODE to MIDI or MIX for each channel you want to receive patch
changes
8. Press WRITE and save your Multi by answering YES with the Increment dial
to both questions.
Now you should have a Multi that will respond to patch changes internally
instead of changing the Multi.
