You could run it with DOSbox if you use a serial port interface.

Someone is selling a K5 on craigslist. It is local to me, but I don't
think I want yet another k5, I have two already.

I am very interested!! I saw some plans on the web to boost the
output level by replacing some resistors, I dont know if you have
seen them...
Something must be done to bring this synth to its full potential!

Yes, I saw them, but you get a lot of new problems
with the headphones output, it's still as noisy as
before, but there's a sudden gain boost when you rise
the volume which seems to clip the LM386 amplifier.

Maybe it's just a matter of filtering the power going
to the output chips, because the line outputs used
with a separate hedphones amp produces much less noise
than using the headphones output.

Now that I see that someone is interested, I'll start
to look for possible upgrades.

If I remember correctly, the (stock) K5 is a bit noisy.  When you replace the resistors the overall output goes up but the noise dB remains the same, so the signal-to-noise ratio goes up and sound sounds less noisy.

Yep, but if you don't have a good mixer it will just
not work at high volumes.

The main problem for me is the headphones jack. It's
as noisy on both K5s I have.

My father has his k5 Synth that he wants to get to someone who could
use it. He is not asking anything for the Synth. It has a very nice
expensive case. He is only asking $125.00 for the case and shipping
from New York City. I think it weighs around 15-20 lbs.

If anyone is interested, please e-mail me at w_dykes@... and I
will give you his phone number (he doesn't have e-mail). He is an
interesting character at 83.

Hi, you can simply go to the system menu, there you'll see 'trans' which means transpose. You can set it anywhere from -12 to +12 semitones. In this case you'll want it at -1.

A few days ago on the K5000 alias there was a message about the old K5 editor from Dr. T's being released to the public:

http://tamw.atari-users.net/cage_art.htm

(sorry, but I deleted the original message)

Around the same time that this editor was available, Dr. T's also had a program which would take a sample from an Akai S900 sampler and perform a FFT on the sample and send the harmonics to a K5.  I don't remember the name of the program but does anyone know:

1. The name of the program
2. If it has been released to the public like the Caged Artists programs?

I know about the K5 Wavemaker program by Leslie Stanford (http://www.kfuenf.org/KAWAI.K5/index.html) but I'm on the lookout for the one by Dr. T's.

Thanks,

Jeff

If you have a plain DOS machine with a MPU-401 or compatible and
software that can save to Ensoniq SampleVision samples, like SoundForge
or Cool Edit Pro, you can use Syntonyx Overtone to do the job.

It's in the group's files section.

Right there:

If you have a serial port interface, you might be able
to use it with DOSbox.

If you have a plain DOS machine with a MPU-401 or compatible and
software that can save to Ensoniq SampleVision samples, like SoundForge
or Cool Edit Pro, you can use Syntonyx Overtone to do the job.

the floppies, but after my father reinstalled it a second time, the copy
protection killed them)

Loads of other good stuff there, much of it still not bettered, & hey
its all free thanks mostly to the sterling work of Tim Conrardy.

Can be run on an original 20thCentury Atari or under the Steem
emulator on a 21stC PC

I have a K5 and a Yamaha MU-10.

I can connect them so I can play the K5's keyboard and the default
grand piano sounds on the MU-10's audio output.

Is it possible to store a MU-10 instrument change instruction on the
K5 as eg instrument patch A12 and then transmit that to the MU-10?

(This is so I wouldn't need a laptop or separate controller on stage.)

TIA,
John C.

What happens when you change patches on your K5 (does the MU-10 also
change patches?

There should be a setting on the MU-10 that lets it responds to MIDI
patch change info. You then just need to experiment a bit and figure
out how your MU-10 translates K5 patch changes.

Hi,

I just want to use the K5 as a keyboard and for it to instruct the MU-10
to change from piano to string synth (or other instrument).

So I would not change patches on the K5 - the hope is to be able to
instruct the MU-10
by doing a dummy send dump of a K5 patch with those instructions in it.

Well, the K5 can output patch change instructions, if
you press twice on SYSTEM button you can control what
the K5 sends.

K5 can only control the first 96 patches :
INT Single A 1 to A 12 -> GM patch 1 to 12
INT Single B 1 to B 12 -> GM patch 13 to 24
INT Single C 1 to C 12 -> GM patch 25 to 36
INT Single D 1 to D 12 -> GM patch 37 to 48

EXT Single A 1 to A 12 -> GM patch 49 to 60
EXT Single B 1 to B 12 -> GM patch 61 to 72
EXT Single C 1 to C 12 -> GM patch 73 to 84
EXT Single D 1 to D 12 -> GM patch 85 to 96

MULTI does nothing.

On the K5, press the MIDI button twice. On the left-ish side of the
screen set PGM to ON. Press MIDI again, set the MIDI TRS channel to
whatever MIDI channel the MU10 is on. So if the MU10 is on channel 5,
set the Transmit (TRS) channel to that one.

If I buy a K5m without a functioning LCD, is it possible to still use
the unit in a studio with an editor program? And since I have Windows
XP, what editor program should I use? Any ideas?

Hi Emil,

The thing is, you have to set the k5 to the right settings in order
to use the editor, and that will be difficult if you can't see what
is on the screen. I would suggest ordering a new screen from Telesis
Used Gear and Backlights, or having them install one for you:

http://www.telesisgear.com/

You could probably find a fully functional k5 on Ebay or craigslist
(although the backlight on most K5 has died by this age, the screens
are usually good).

One more thing: if you are controlling a synth with an arpeggiator or
sequencer from he K5, you may have a problem as the K5 sends more
than just a note-off when you release a note - it sends an All Notes
Off message when you release the last note. If you have a midi data
filter program or hardware, you might try to filter that message out.

For editors, the best I have found is the K5 atari editor, so get a
copy of Steem for your pc and download the K5 editor from our files
section or from the "Tim's Atari Midi World" website.
