Welcome, Samuel
Karen's voice is heart-warming and comforting. Listening to it makes
staying down in the dumps difficult. Whatever the song, she had an
uplifting way of singing it that really connects and connotes true
understanding and compassion. This I believe is why Carpenters music
has such universal appeal. Her voice conveys all these things to
practically everybody, no matter what language they speak.
I wouldn't be surprised if she and Richard had discussed recording
hymnals or spirituals as a new project. They were certainly capable
of making it successful. Their talents were so wide-ranging I can't
think of any genre of music that was beyond their reach.

No one will ever sing the voice of the angelic nightengale such as
Karen's. Her music tuches me as much now as it did in high school
over 27 years ago. Whenever I was down and feeling blue like many
teen-agers, I went to my room and played Karen and Richard on my turn
table. There, I would listen and let me perfect harmonies just set
my heart at ease. My depression would subsize and suddenly I could
go back to school the next day not feeling so hopeless. In time I
think Richard and her would put together an album of the great hymns
of the faith, which speak to each individual so deeply like no other
music can. I can just imagine her singing "It is Well With my
Soul", "I Believe", and "I Walk in the Garden Alone". She did
sing "Ave Maria" far better than Mario Lanza, and she did very well
on some Christmas carols. Just think how she could have put the
Mormon Tabernacle to shame with her rendition of "The Battle Hymn of
the Republic". Richard, if you are reading this see if she did any
renditions of traditional Protestant Hymns. That album would go
platinum in a matter of weeks.
With love for our beloved Karen,

Hello,
My wife and I love the Carpenter's music. It is definitely great to
hear it on the radio to this day. My heart goes out to Karen's
family, of which I know she is missed a great deal. Her legacy still
lives on in her music, and even the newer generations of music lovers
are getting familiar with the Carpenter's music.
The specials aren't available on DVD or VHS as yet, Vanessa. ...Officially, that is. :-)) People do periodically sell videotape copies of them on eBay, Yahoo!Auctions, and Amazon.com's zShops, but I've never purchased one.
Fortunately, one of the specials is still available online, at least until Sept. 30. A very generous fan has put dowloadable files of the entire Carpenters' Very First Television Special up on his website. Donald's House of Goofus has them at this link:
Hopefully someday Richard will put together a DVD package of the TV specials, and include outtakes and other extras. It'd definitely be a bonus treat for us fans, IMO. Could even introduce others to the wholesome entertainment that Karen and Richard brought to the small screen as well as to their records.

thanks for your email. I have been a fan since I was about 12 which is now almost twenty years, but I don't have much of a collection at all. It seems like there is not many Australian fans, or maybe they are closet fans, I don't know. Anyway I've only just purchased the DVD Close to You Remembering The Carpenters and I would absolutely love to see the specials they did, as I have never seen them. Are they available on video or DVD and if so do you know
where can I purchase them.- regards Vanessa.

They were a phenomenal group. Fantastic music. Amazing popularity not only during the Seventies but an ever-growing resurgence of it since the early Nineties.
Their worldwide appeal then & now, especially in Japan and the U.K., is most remarkable. Twenty-seven Top 100 hit singles in the U.S. alone, including three No.1s--with nine more in the Top 10 and eight others in the Top 40. At least one quadruple-platinum album and a veritable slew of gold ones. That's just on the recording side. Their five television specials (especially the Christmas ones) garnered very respectable ratings.
With new recordings still being released, and the likelihood of even more, it's easy to remain a fan of theirs IMO. The Internet has been a big help too keeping their fanbase strong as well as informed, as evidenced by the sheer number of Carpenters-related websites and lists. Plus many others are discovering their music and becoming new fans every day.
It's a great time to be one, I believe.

Hello N,
I haven't heard of any special commemoration or such scheduled for
next February in L.A. But I'd be surprised if there wasn't something
planned to mark the occasion.
You might want to try asking the knowledgeable folks over at The
Carpenters list:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thecarpenters/
Several of them live in the LA area. If an event is scheduled, I'd
bet they've heard something about it by now.
Hope this helps.

A response would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

First Television Special aired in 1976 (not '77), on Dec. 8 according

Speaking of which...Karen's drumming segment is a definite highlight!
Those one-handed double cymbal crashes are, to borrow Howard Cosell's
description of Rich's car race in the next segment, mesmerizing.
Shoot, the whole thing is. Karen cooks as a drummer. The special
effects of a second Karen drumming in the background, then both
merging together at the end, are very well done too. Also, Victor
Borge & Richard's piano duet is too hilarious.
