I went to see her in febuary this year when she was touring Western Australia,
then again last saturday with a whole heap of different bands, and she was by
far the best...She stole the show and was so good with the audience..Its my
daughter who started off a huge fan, but now I also love her...

I got a chance to interview the alt-country Goddess
this summer:
http://chickswithguitars.blogspot.com/2005/08/kasey-chambers.html
We went to the show and got a chance to talk with her
dad for a bit. I asked him if the money was better in
fox hunting or playing guitar. He said fox hunting (at
least at the time he was doing it).

Well this goes to show ya.......Kasey is far enough into her career that she
should do a live cd with this song on it. It's one of the ones that hooked
me. Saw it live on Austin City Limits with the songwriter Lucinda Williams.
The performance made me a fan of Lucindas too Now if she would only do a
Maria McKee cover!

Hey: This reviewer makes reference to Kasey covering "Water in the Fuel." Does
anyone know if that's on a record and which one? It is a good tune, but I didn't
know Kasey covered it.

Fred Eaglesmith, DustyBy Bernard Zuel
January 7, 2005
When you fly with the Eagle you don't hang around with the turkeys. Fred digs
deep and dark for a work neither country nor folk.
FRED EAGLESMITH, Dusty (A Major Label/Didgeridoo) * * * *
Among the barrelling country-rock, hillbilly hooning and dry-witted descriptions
of oddball men and women, Fred Eaglesmith has always pierced the listener with
truths.
One example is the collapsing marriage viewed from a distance in Water in the
Fuel, so beautifully covered by Kasey Chambers. Eaglesmith's songs about
ordinary, usually working-class or farming folk don't parade their emotional
wreckage - Canadians don't do that sort of thing. But it's there, it hurts and
it works, even if some people will never get past the rocking sound and the
gags.
For any Eaglesmith fan, Dusty will first come as a shock. This is as stripped
back as he has been: his voice prominent but rusting at the edges while
rudimentary keyboard rhythm tracks, organ, cellos and simple instrumentation
populate the background.
It's neither country nor folk - it just is what it is.
AdvertisementAdvertisement
This is also as bleak as he has been. These stories rarely mention it directly,
but they reek of a time where on top of the daily hassles of working, wanting
and getting by is a patina of gnawing despair. It's a sorrow aimed at a world
more fixed on anger, retribution and empty religious sentiments than offering
hope.
At times, Eaglesmith reminds you of the darkest songs of Townes Van Zandt,
although there's something of Leonard Cohen as well in the unvarnished strength
of these songs even at their most deceptively simple (I-75).
Through it all he deploys his eye for small detail, as in the title track:
"There's tobacco inside your cuffs/And you drink too much/But it's never
enough/People stare at you as you stand and cough/Might be the weather, might be
the dust/Rain, rain, rain in a western sky/Teardrops in your heart, gravel in
your eyes."
It's good, isn't it?

Ten Women With Something to Say
Merritt, Moorer Offer Strong Singer-Songwriter Albums

The term "singer-songwriter" often calls to mind a rather dull, plainly-dressed
individual contemplating why they can't find true love. Most of the time, it's
because they're so damn boring! Not so with these women, who do not wallow in
misery, nor if (isNaN(document.axel)) {document.axel = Math.random() + ""; ord =
document.axel * 1000000000000000000;}var ad = '';document.write(ad);
do they dilute their insightful lyrics for the sake of appearing cuter. They
each have a true musical vision and, for the adventurous country fan, it's very
much worth a listen. Here, in alphabetical order by artist, are 10 albums
released this year by women with something to say.
Kasey Chambers, Wayward Angel (Warner Bros.): This Australian topped the
Americana chart with her country, rock and bluegrass blend. Many songs here are
about stardom, but she's still unafraid to sing about gettin' it on.
Favorite Lyric: These are just things that I've been given/For a plastic way of
living/And I'm not sure if that really is my style.
Julia Fordham, That's Life (Vanguard): If you consider a sense of humor to be
sexy, then meet Ms. Fordham. Her wicked, sharp insights are never betrayed by
her deep, sensuous vocals. A very comfortable listen.
Favorite lyric: Welcome to my movie/I have cast myself as fabulous and lonely.
Patty Griffin, Impossible Dream (ATO): Just when she takes you to the edge of
despair, she throws a line, and you feel like there's hope. It also astounds me
with every listen how she can say so much in so few words.
Favorite lyric: Isn't it hard sometimes?/Isn't it lonely?/How I still hang
around here/And there's nothing to hold me.
Lori McKenna, Bittertown (Signature Sounds): She is one of the few who can write
about her hometown and her husband without sounding like a cheeseball. An
old-fashioned approach rarely sounds so fresh.
Favorite lyric: They're building up big houses/Back behind the school where we
used to/Drink our beer on Friday nights/And pretend that we were lovers in your
car.
Angela McCluskey, The Things We Do (Manhattan): With her distinct, Macy
Gray-like vocals, McCluskey has crafted (with producer Nathan Larson) a
fearless, candid album about navigating through her rotten relationships.
Favorite lyric: I've been digging at a ditch, my dear/But I hit concrete late
last year/The spade and the shovel/And all kinds of trouble/Came and stripped me
of my natural cheer.
Tift Merritt, Tambourine (Lost Highway): This time, she found inspiration in her
R&B records, but when she turns to her lost hometown in "Laid a Highway," her
regret is palpable. And the melodies are killer.
Favorite lyric: I told him that he better go/'Cause I was crazy and impossible.
Allison Moorer, The Duel (Sugar Hill): For her first indie release, Moorer faces
the big issues, from bandwagon politics to watching love not only die but also
be buried. Powerful singing, as always.
Favorite lyric: Sign up and get a flag/Wear it proudly, you can brag/To the
fools who didn't volunteer.
Mindy Smith, One Moment More (Vanguard): One of my first favorite local singers,
she long ago won me over with her endearing stage presence and naked lyrics.
Years later, the heartfelt title track has lost none of its impact.
Favorite lyric: You can try to keep me down/You can try to keep me under/But
you'll never get my will/You'll never take my will to fight.
Holly Williams, The Ones We Never Knew (Universal South): Knowing her lineage
(she's Hank Jr.'s daughter) enhances some of the lyrics, but her emotions are
universal. Her hearty voice indicates that she lives and breathes music.
Favorite lyric: I read pain from a young boy whose father left too early/Whose
mother tried to mold him into what she'd love to be.
Kate York, Kate York (Self-released): A rising star in the Nashville club scene,
York makes melodies seem effortless. Made with guys accustomed to playing live,
this EP is an enchanting (if addictive) calling card.
Favorite lyric: But I'm always on the outside/On the outside of forever/Looking
in/But there's never room for me.

Singer makes mark with love's laments
Wednesday, December 29, 2004
By David Bauder, The Associated Press
Jim Cooper, Associated Press
Australian singer Kasey Chambers was raised on the sounds of Americans Emmylou
Harris and Johnny Cash.
Click photo for larger image.
NEW YORK -- A quick glance across Seventh Avenue reminds Kasey Chambers of her
place in the pecking order of Australian entertainers, export division.
Madison Square Garden's outdoor message board advertises an upcoming performance
by the Wiggles, the four-member group that makes preschoolers squeal all over
the world. Chambers, meanwhile, sits undisturbed in a hotel coffee shop.
Back home, the autograph seekers would have been lining up to see this
27-year-old with the heart-melting voice and occasional Lucinda Williams kick.
Chambers' 2001 album "Barricades & Brickwalls" went platinum in Australia. "Not
Pretty Enough," her piercing song of self-doubt, topped the singles chart, and
her latest album "Wayward Angel" debuted at No. 1.
Grandmothers, teenagers, trendy pop fans -- her audience back home spans the
spectrum. In the United States, she's a darling of critics and the alternative
country crowd but doesn't sell much.
"I appreciate having any sort of career over here, but it means more because I
love coming over here," she said. "It's really rewarding to me personally to
come to the sort of places that we've been playing, and I don't want to give
that up."
Tending to success in Australia and the birth of 2-year-old son Talon kept
Chambers from doing much traveling the past few years. She briefly toured the
United States last fall.
With all the good news in her life the past few years, the overwhelming sadness
of "Wayward Angel" is striking. The song "Pony" ties a more adult yearning to
childhood memories, "For Sale" keeps fans at a distance, and the one song
clearly influenced by Talon is about her own imperfections.
By the time the rocking song of sexual obsession "Guilty as Sin" comes along,
it's a necessary release.
"I always think that about every record I make, that this is going to make me
sound like such a depressed person," she said. "I'm not at all."
But she only tends to write when she's sad; sitting in a room and pouring her
heart out has no appeal when she's in a good mood. Most of her first album was
written after her parents' marriage broke up.
"I'm sure a psychologist would have fun with all of my songs," she said. "I
wouldn't have fun with a psychologist looking at them."
She also doesn't want to leave the impression that she's ungrateful for success.
She usually loves the attention. One notable exception came when a nurse in an
Australian hospital requested an autograph while Chambers was on a stretcher and
sobbing while awaiting a minor surgical procedure.
"Ten years on the Nullabor and not seeing anyone besides my family makes me love
being around people," she said. "When I'm on tour, I never get a room by
myself."
Some translation: Until she was about 10, Chambers and her family lived off the
land on the Nullabor Plain, a vast, largely unpopulated part of Australia. Only
for a couple of months a year around the holidays did they come back to
civilization -- to a town of 300 people.
Her formative music experiences were singing with her family around a campfire
or listening to her father's tapes.
"I thought it was really normal," she said. "I thought that everyone was
listening to Emmylou Harris and Johnny Cash. It wasn't until I got into my teen
years that I learned about pop music."
Chambers' upbringing seems unusual only to her in retrospect.
"I only have fond memories about it," she said, "but I could never do it again.
I'm way too spoiled for that. To live there would be a real culture shock for
me. It would be like going on 'Survivor.'"
She keeps her family close at hand. Her family had its own musical act, the Dead
Ringer Band, when she was a teenager. Now her brother Nash produces her albums,
and her father plays guitar in her touring band.
It doesn't feel weird to have her dad on stage with her; Chambers said she's
never done a gig without him.
What happens when her dad flubs a note? Do you have to yell at him?
"I'm not that fussy when it comes to being on stage," she said.
She'll have some good stories to tell Talon someday. Perhaps he'll ask why she
considers herself a wayward angel. Not now, though.
"He doesn't have a clue that the album is named after that," she said. "He only
likes it when I sing Wiggles songs."

The spirit moved us
Sydney Morning Herald Sun, 19 Dec 2004 5:10 PM PST
There was a lot of God, and plenty of decent music, around in 2004, writes
Bernard Zuel. God was in the house this year. He was there with Hillsong
favourite Guy Sebastian, who began the year as the biggest thing since someone
thought of bread, let alone slicing it.

Music inspired jewellery range
Adelaide Confidential
14dec04
SHE has handled snakes for Fiona Horne, lived with The Mavis's, and grew up with
Kasey Chambers.
It's no surprise then that when North Adelaide designer Sarah Murphy launched
her jewellery line – Glamazon Valley – it was musically-inspired.
"It's very punk rock or rock 'n' roll, anyway," the 30-year-old laughs.
"I use a lot of skulls, cast charms, Swarovksi crystals and pearls ... my
influences are Vivienne Westwood, punk rock and Audrey Hepburn."
With the help of designer friend Chloe Papazahariakis, Sarah's range is now
featured in New York boutiques – Elizabeth Charles, Bigdrop and Institut.
Adelaide stockists include Shop 5, Miss Gladys Sym Choon, Sooki and Whistles.
Her jewellery – including earrings, cameo brooches, kilt pins and wallet chains
– has also attracted celeb customers such as singer Natalie Miller, model Chloe
Maxwell and Rove McManus's fiance Belinda Emmett.
Sarah grew up on Kangaroo Island and boarded at Pembroke School. It was when she
returned to country SA – helping to book entertainment for her parents' hotel in
Robe – that she fell into the music industry. Sarah met The Mavis's when Matt
Mavis was dating media personality/white witch Fiona Horne. She ended up
becoming Fiona's personal assistant for two years.
Book signings with Fiona were an interesting experience.
"She quite often used her snakes in rituals, so I'd have to get the snakes out
and pass them to her," Sarah laughs.

I would also be interested in tapes, especially from
the Chicago show.
I just got an update from Pollstar that Kasey will be
at a music festival in Austin in April, 2005.

Hey everyone,
Just wanted to let you know about a new Alt. Country website at
www.rootshighway.com. The site is just a few months old, and is a
constant work in progress. We feature monthly artist and band
interviews, lyrics and tabs for your favorite artists (have artists
you'd like to see featured, or have lyrics or tabs for? Email us...)
not to mention concert reviews, etc.
We're almost an online version of No Depression -- just a little bit
less picky about music, but you'll find no cookie cutter stuff with
us. This month we have interviews with (but not limited to) Kasey
Chambers and Holly Williams (Bocephus' daughter) newcomers Shane
Nicholson and Michelle Anthony, and rising star Grey De Lisle.
We look forward to joining in discussions about music we all know and
love with y'all and hope that in the meantime you'll stop by and take
a look at our website.
See y'all soon

That's very kind of you Hans. Thank you. Now I need to cross over to

My thoughts on that are...
I'm a huge kasey Chambers fan , but i also am a huge fan of Lucinda
Williams , Ana Popovic , etc and think that others from this group
may also be interested in these artists.
I would not try to spread worthless information to this group about
the artists Im interested in , and would show the respect to Kasey
that she deserves.
I'm sorry if i offended anyone by advertising my group in yours...You
can be asured that i would be more than happy to also advertise YOUR
group at my sites. If you would like me to add your link to my
groups , please let me know and i will be happy to promote your group!
If this message doesnt get posted i will totally understand! I am
always happy to share ANYthing about other Artists that others may
not know anything about though. It makes us more aware of the talent
out there that otherwise we may never know about.
Thanks...Just my thoughts... kasey is a great Artist , and worthy of
the attention you give her in this group!
