Subject: THE REVOLUTION WILL START VERY SOON INDEED!!!
revolutionar...
Send Email Send Email

My old email address (socialiststeve@...) got hit by a virus today, so I've had to create this new one (revolutionarysocialiststeve@...).

[For those who are interested (perhaps you want to search Google groups), I've had the following earlier email addresses in chronological order: stevew@... (sometimes displayed as stevew@...), S.Wallis@..., stevewallis@... and stevewallis@...).]

My big project at the moment is launching a revolutionary socialist band called Galaxia. I have put a call out on the internet (details are on the Galaxia website: www.galaxiamusic.org) for musicians and singers to go to a recording studio tomorrow (Thursday 30th June). We will be doing three songs: "Do They Know It's G8 Time?" (my lyrics to the Band Aid 20 tune "Do They Know It's Christmas?"), "The Revolution Starts Now!" (an original song written by myself, including snippets from other songs) and "L'internaçionale" (my version of the international song of the working class: "The Internationale").

We will put the songs, in a variety of formats (including MP3), on various sites on the internet, including the Galaxia website, later on tomorrow or Friday. Look at the Galaxia discussion group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/galaxiamusic for further places that you will be able to download them from.

In the meantime, to find the lyrics, go to the Galaxia website or discussion group.

This is of course just in time for the G8 summit, for which I am calling for a worldwide general strike. Of course it would be naive to expect workers to strike everywhere, and (for reasons I've put on the website www.g8summitworldwidegeneralstrike.org) I don't expect much more than a school students strike in Britain, but surely it would not be too much out of the question to expect a serious general strike which challenges for power (and will hopefully lead to a socialist revolution) somewhere in the world this G8 time (6-8 July in Gleneagles, Scotland; see my worldwide general strike website or www.g8alternatives.org for details of events in the run-up to and during that summit)...

If you think that one person putting out this call cannot achieve much, ponder this: I've been sending messages to large collections of groups at http://groups.yahoo.com for a while. However, only those who chose to join the groups (rather than read the archives) and then receive each message individually (rather than as a digest or read messages on the web) have been able to find out which other groups I've sent messages to. Additionally, I've had to send messages in separate groups due to Yahoo!'s limit on the number of email addresses sent in the To: or CC: fields. I created 70 groups of my own (and sent messages out in two bunches).

As a service to the working class across the world, I am including below a list of all groups (some of which I have posted to before) that I am about to send this message out to at http://groups.yahoo.com. Go to that website and search for a particular group name, or type "http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/" followed by a group name, if you want to find out about a particular one and consider joining it. I have included them in alphabetical order, except for two groups I have set up today which are at the start. [I will no longer be able to modify the descriptions of any of my previous groups or remove the odd spammer who appears from time to time.] I've included most of the groups I created under my old email address, especially the most important.

The groups are as follows:

It's G8 time, there’s a need to be afraid
At G8 time, they say they’ll help but should you trust them?
In our world of plenty, there have been so many shattered dreams
Go on strike around the world at G8 time
You may pray, but strike for the other ones
At G8 time they plot, so we can’t just have fun
There’s a world outside your window
And it’s a world of dread and fear
There may be private water flowing
It could be bitter like acid rain
And the G8 suits that plot there are Monsanto’s allies in power
So revolt now so it will be us instead of them
And there might just be GM food in Africa after G8 time
All food should be organic after G8 time
And there might just be GM drink in Africa after G8 time
All drink should be organic after G8 time
And there would still be AIDS in Africa after G8 time
There should be no more diseases anywhere after G8 time
And there would still be wars in Africa after G8 time
There should be peace around the world after G8 time
And there would still be dictators in Africa after G8 time
There should be real democracy everywhere after G8 time
The greatest gift we can give them is socialism
When we all rule the world
No rich or poor any more
Do they know it’s G8 time at all?
Here’s to us
Go on strike for everyone good
Stop Monsanto this summer for white and black
If they do GM mind control could the people fight back?
Here's to them
Underneath that burning sun
You ain’t gotta feel guilt just powerful
Get our black friends back from the brink of hell
They will know it’s G8 time very soon
Go on strike – repeated 4 times
Do a Bolivia, let them know it’s G8 time – repeated to end

Subject: Why there are no Galaxia downloads yet / improvements to lyrics
revolutionar...
Send Email Send Email

I sent a similar message to the following this morning to the following newsgroups (using http://groups.google.co.uk): scot.politics, wales.politics.general, alt.politics.british, uk.politics.misc, alt.politics.socialism.trotsky (but I've just made some further important improvements to the lyrics of "Do They Know It's G8 Time"):

> Well, there's *still* no Galaxia tracks available for download at;

> I wonder if Steve could give us a progress report because quite frankly, I,
> along with doubtless thousands of others, feel extremely short changed !
> ;)

OK, here's a progress report.

We did record versions of "Do They Know It's G8 Time?", "The Revolution
Starts Now!" and "L'Internacionale" on Thursday. However, for two
reasons, they are still not on the website:

a) I have spent large parts of the last seven years as a political
prisoner on psychiatric wards (see
www.socialiststeve.me.uk/disability-mental-health.htm). I went AWOL
last Monday, which was absolutely vital for getting Galaxia sorted out
(as well as doing other things in preparation for the G8 summit). I was
reincarcerated on Friday before I had an opportunity to put the tracks
on the internet. I did manage to go AWOL via the fire exit on Saturday
morning, but didn't have my keys with me to get home and get the
recordings.

b) The lyrics were not as good as I would have liked. I've included
improved lyrics for "Do They Know It's G8 Time?" below:

It's G8 time, there's a need to be afraid
At G8 time, they say they'll help but should you trust them?
In our world of plenty, there have been so many shattered dreams
Go on strike around the world at G8 time
You may pray, but strike for the other ones
At G8 time they plot, so we can't just have fun
There's a world outside your window
And it's a world of dread and fear
There may be private water flowing
It could be bitter like acid rain
And the G8 suits that plot there are Monsanto's allies in power
So revolt now so it will be us instead of them
And there might just be GM food in Africa after G8 time
All food should be organic after G8 time
And there might just be GM drink in Africa after G8 time
All drink should be organic after G8 time
And there would still be AIDS in Africa after G8 time
There should be no more diseases anywhere after G8 time
And there would still be wars in Africa after G8 time
There should be peace around the world after G8 time
And there would still be dictators in Africa after G8 time
There should be real democracy everywhere after G8 time

Proportional representation by single transferable vote

Without using computers; Bush didn't really win!
The greatest gift we can give them is socialism
When we all rule the world
No rich or poor any more
Do they know it's G8 time at all?
Here's to us
Go on strike for everyone good
If they do GM mind control could the people fight back?

This could be organisations like the CIA's new tack
Here's to them
Underneath that burning sun
You ain't gotta feel guilt just powerful
Get our black friends back from the brink of hell
They will know it's G8 time very soon
Go on strike - repeated 4 times
Do a Bolivia, let them know it's G8 time

Do a Bolivia, let them know it's G8 time again - repeated twice

----------------------------

I'm in Edinburgh for anti-G8 events, and handed out a leaflet at the
counter-summit organised by G8 Alternatives yesterday. I also spoke in
the debate on Africa, pointing out the real agenda of the G8 is now GM
foods for mind control, after the Bolivian masses have struck back
(with general strikes, demonstrations, occupations and blockades across
the capital of the nation). I of course called for a worldwide general
strike.

I will attempt to make some recordings today or tomorrow, just by
myself a-capella, probably in the Lighthouse Studios.

The initial line-up for my revolutionary socialist band Galaxia – just myself on vocals and Adam from the Cutting Rooms recording studio (Abraham Moss Centre, City College, Manchester) on acoustic guitar accompanying me on two tracks – performed and recorded three tracks (“Do They Know It’s G8 Time?”, “The Revolution Starts Now!” and “L’internaçionale”) on Thursday the 30th of June. [I’d like people playing other instruments and Adam does not want to be involved with the band in the future anyway, so I will continue looking for band members.]

I had had to go AWOL on the previous Monday from the psychiatric ward on which I was a political prisoner, and the police recaptured me on the Friday before I had a chance to put the tracks on the internet. Despite escaping on the Saturday, I did not have access to my flat, so I could not put the tracks on my website before the G8 summit.

I travelled to Edinburgh on the Saturday, too late for the Make Poverty History demonstration, but I did attend the G8 Alternatives Summit on the Sunday (at which I spoke in the debate on Africa), an anti-war demo later that day and the Carnival for Full Enjoyment on the Monday. Meanwhile, I came up with some improvements to the lyrics of “Do They Know It’s G8 Time?” (correcting some minor errors and explaining some things more clearly) and posted them on various discussion groups at Google and Yahoo! If you missed those improved lyrics and want to read them, go to http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/galaxiamusic/message/33.

Unfortunately, serious strike action did not take place anywhere in the world during this G8 summit (to the best of my knowledge). This was probably mainly because my call wasn’t backed up by any sizeable organisation (although School Students Against War were trying to get school students to strike in Scotland). This lack of action could also have been influenced by the violence that occurred at the Carnival for Full Enjoyment and/or the terrorist attacks on Thursday the 7th of July in London. In my opinion, both were instigated by people on the side of big business (whether in the police force, agent provocateurs among the Edinburgh protesters or terrorists) to divert the world’s attention at such an important time from doing something constructive to defeat the G8. [Along with members of the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army (anarchists wearing brightly coloured clothes and having painted faces), I did my best to diffuse the situation, but with the provocative actions of the police and enough of the 1,000 anarchists around wanting violence, it was inevitable. I witnessed wanton destruction by the anarchist Black Bloc of property during clashes with police at the anti-G8 protests in Genoa in 2001, and it later emerged that 50 fascists had infiltrated the Black Bloc.]

Nevertheless, in my opinion, a G8 summit is the best opportunity for coordinated action around the world to try to overthrow big business, and (with far more time to organise) I am setting my sights on the 2006 summit in St Petersburg in Russia. I would like Galaxia to record improved and updated versions of the songs, as well as others, in time for that summit. A European conference of Peoples’ Global Action called for a “Global Day of Action” on the first day of the G8 summit, and hopefully that organisation (which is holding an intercontinental conference in India in October – see http://www.agp.org) will support the call next time.

I was picked up by the police at the Carnival, and am finally back in Manchester with some leave, so I can update my websites. I have now put high and low quality versions of each track, as MP3 files, on the Galaxia website. Subject: Galaxia plans for a worldwide general strike during next year's G8 summit
revolutionar...
Send Email Send Email

I’ve included below the contents of my band Galaxia’s home page (at www.galaxiamusic.org):

You can now download Galaxia tracks from this website. Click here for details.

Hi!

My name is Steve Wallis, a revolutionary socialist mainly living in Manchester, England, but also a member of the Scottish Socialist Party in Glasgow.

I had been planning to set up a socialist band, which I hope will play a leading role in the world socialist revolution, for a couple of years or so, because it is possible to influence people greatly through music and I have acquired sufficiently strong singing abilities through karaoke to convince myself that I would be capable of singing in a band.

I decided to name the band “Galaxia” after the very left-wing future of the galaxy at the end of Isaac Asimov’s epic Foundation series, voted the most influential science fiction series of all-time. [The original trilogy had a right-wing plot to get past the censors in the 1950s, so read the last two novels Foundations Edge and Foundation and Earth for the left-wing ending.]

My first attempt at songwriting was a combination of snippets from existing songs, original lyrics and speeches (some of which were quite long), which I called The Revolution Starts Now!, inspired by the Steve Earle & the Dukes song and album entitled The Revolution Starts...Now. I originally intended it as a B-side for our first single (which I wanted to be a cover version of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody).

However, I came up with an initiative for a worldwide general strike at the time of the G8 summit (in Gleneagles, Scotland, during the first week in July), which I publicised via the internet and by handing out copies of a leaflet (which you can read by clicking here). I predicted that the G8 summit would be the time when the world socialist revolution starts, so it became urgent to rewrite that song and release it on the internet (and on the odd CD), in time for the events around the G8 summit, to make my initiative more successful than it otherwise would be. You can read the lyrics of The Revolution Starts Now! as recorded in June by clicking here, or as improved in September (to include some minor corrections to the politics) by clicking here. [The latter lyrics page includes full names of people referred to in the song, in brackets.] Unfortunately, serious general strikes (which could have led to a revolution) did not take off anywhere in the world at the time of this G8 summit. This was probably mainly because my call wasn’t backed up by any sizeable organisation (although School Students Against War were trying to get school students to strike in Scotland). This lack of action could also have been influenced by the violence that occurred at the Carnival for Full Enjoyment on Monday the 4th of July in Edinburgh and/or the terrorist attacks on Thursday the 7th of July in London. In my opinion, both violent events were instigated by people on the side of big business (whether in the police force, agent provocateurs among the Edinburgh protesters or terrorists) to divert the worlds attention at such an important time from doing something constructive to defeat the G8. Nevertheless, in my opinion, a G8 summit is the best opportunity for coordinated action around the world to try to overthrow big business, and (with far more time to organise) I am setting my sights on the 2006 summit in St Petersburg in Russia. I would like Galaxia to record improved and updated versions of the songs, as well as others, in time for that summit, and also have a world tour in advance of the summit, to publicise the call for a worldwide general strike.

I have a portable karaoke machine and had quite a lot of CD-Gs (CDs with graphics for display on its screen) until most of them disappeared recently, and I experimented with varying the lyrics while singing along to Do They Know It’s Christmas? on the 14th of June. I then modified lyrics to (the Band Aid 20 version of) the song which I downloaded from the internet, in order to come up with my first version of Do They Know It’s G8 Time? I distributed some photocopies in the Hulme and Moss Side areas of Manchester, and was such a threat to the state that the police arrested me outside Moss Side Leisure Centre!

I made some improvements to the lyrics of Do They Know It’s G8 Time? and distributed copies, encouraging others to make photocopies and distribute them themselves (especially during G8 events, and at airports to publicise the messages in the song and Galaxia itself around the world) the lyrics can be downloaded and distributed by printing out the Microsoft Word file accessible here, or read on the internet by clicking here. I have subsequently updated the lyrics, to improve the politics in the song, at the cost of differing much more from Do They Know It’s Christmas? I sung the new version live at the Earth First! Gathering in August; they can be read on-line by clicking here and an explanation for the changes can be read by clicking here.

As well as those two tracks, I performed a version of the international song of the working class: The Internationale. I changed the lyrics and come up with (what I think is) a better tune; because my version uses the final line in French I call it L'internaçionale. You can find the lyrics by clicking here, or some improved (extended) lyrics by clicking here.

I put out a call far and wide on the internet for anybody who wanted to participate in Galaxia, either as a full band member or as a guest participant in one or more of our songs, to turn up to a recording studio (the Cutting Rooms, Abraham Moss Centre, City College, Manchester) on Thursday the 30th of June 2005. This was an extremely unorthodox way of getting a band together, and unsurprisingly nobody turned up. However, I already knew that a very good guitarist (called Adam) who works there could help out with the recordings, and he accompanied me on an acoustic guitar when we recorded two of the tracks. Adam told me that he does not want to be part of Galaxia in the future, so I am still looking for band members. Anyone who wishes to participate can of course contact me (by phoning 07739 904924 or emailing me at busterblock@...), but I will probably recruit most band members face-to-face, and the band may just comprise the first serious love of my life (Rhiannon Williams) and myself, in the short term at least.

The main way in which we will distribute our music will be via the internet, and all our tracks will be downloadable free of charge as soon as possible after recording them. I have put the recordings made at the Cutting Rooms on the downloads page of this website.

I was locked up as a political prisoner on the 1st of July, preventing me from putting the tracks on this website until after the G8 summit. I did something even more useful when I escaped – putting improved lyrics for Do They Know It’s G8 Time? on discussion groups, correcting the odd minor mistake and clarifying certain things. An explanation for those improvements, plus the later changes I made when performing the song at the Earth First! Gathering, is provided here.

There was not time before this G8 summit (from the 6th to the 8th of July) to produce a large number of CDs before the G8 summit, but in future I would like us to try to get some on sale in shops. Due to the respective politics of the band and shop owners, it would be naïve to expect many shops (especially when they are part of chain stores) to stock Galaxia CDs, but we could investigate getting them into FOPP, Music Zone and Borders (mainly a bookstore but one that commonly stocks left-wing merchandise) . HMV is a particularly right-wing chain, but it may be possible to get our CDs stocked in Virgin Megastores and WHSmiths.

All our tracks, and the lyrics of our own songs, are and will continue to be copyleft – as defined by the GNU Free Software Foundation – encouraging not-for-profit duplication but forbidding it for commercial purposes, and the covers of our CDs will indicate that the tracks can be downloaded from this website for free.

We will establish the Galaxia Foundation for the World Socialist Revolution, and all the proceeds of CD sales, T-shirt sales, gigs (except for those that are benefits for particular organisations), etc., except for expenses and wages, will go to the Foundation. The Galaxia Foundation will be composed of band members (and perhaps some other socialists) and will democratically decide how to distribute the money – to campaigns, socialist and autonomous organisations, and charities (particularly those which campaign as well as alleviate some of the problems of capitalism). The wage rate of band members will also be decided by the Foundation whatever wage rate we decide to pay ourselves, our wages will be workers wages in line with the philosophy of Galaxia that we are in the band to help the struggle for a better world rather than to line our own pockets. As many of you will have noticed, the word “Foundation” is very appropriate for the Galaxia fund, due to the origins of the band’s name in Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series.

I’ve included below the latest version of my definitive document about how the brain works and how it relates to music. It is accessible from the Documents & Leaflets page of my website (www.socialiststeve.me.uk).

There are two key classes in society - the working class and big business. Working class people tend to be in favour of a democratic socialist world - free from poverty, famines, unemployment, environmental destruction, deaths from preventable diseases, discrimination and of course wars (although most do not know how this can be achieved or have confidence that it can). Big businessmen and women (and the richest pop stars) tend to be in favour of maintaining capitalism, as it is the only way to preserve their wealth. Middle class people can be on either side.

Which side of the class struggle you are on at any moment in time - specified by a variable that is either GOOD or EVIL within your brain (representing the working class or big business respectively) is the most important determiner of your behaviour in whatever you do (in particular in your job or education, hobbies, friendships and love life). Somebody who is GOOD is in favour of a world based on cooperation, whereas somebody who is EVIL is in favour of a world based on competition. Since we are currently living in a world based on competition (global capitalism), those who are GOOD are in favour of changing that via a world socialist revolution and those who are EVIL are trying to prevent that revolution from taking place. After the revolution, the situation will be reversed.

Processes within your brain use models of the past and present state of the world (to some degree of complexity) in order to predict the future and determine what you need to do to achieve your desired outcome. This was dubbed "psychohistory" by the science fiction author Isaac Asimov in his famous Foundation series, which described a galactic revolution and had a very left-wing ending to the galaxy called "Galaxia" - when he wrote "Foundation's Edge" and "Foundation and Earth" to add to the original trilogy which had right-wing language to get past the censors. Psychohistory can be performed on computers as well as brains - e.g. by using my language SDML (see http://www.socialiststeve.me.uk/sdml.htm). In fact, I believe that the strongest conspiratorial organisations on both sides of the class struggle use SDML (or a more advanced language based on the research I did developing SDML due to limitations of my language in terms of speed and memory capacity) to perform psychohistorical modelling and try to outwit the other side.

Psychohistory is also necessary for day to day tasks, to achieve all sorts of minor sub-goals, but the process at the deepest level of your subconscious is dedicated to either helping or hindering a world socialist revolution (according to whether the variable is GOOD or EVIL at any point in time). For most people or animals, that variable can be changed as a result of internal or external processes, but a relatively small number of individuals on the planet are permanently GOOD or EVIL. Ordinary people's brains contain a mixture of processes, some GOOD trying to help socialist revolutions take place and some EVIL trying to stop them, but a very small number of individuals including myself (who I have dubbed "angels") contain only GOOD processes. Even for somebody who is GOOD overall, the EVIL processes inside their brains can stop them from being as GOOD as genuine socialists would like. One way in which they do this is by dissuading the brain from reading left-wing material, particularly my documents on paper or the internet (completely or at all). In the past, I thought that internet censorship was responsible for the relatively small number of people who have accessed my website - 79 was the maximum number of hits recorded for my socialist home page (originally www.stevewallis.org) in one day, with double figures in one day being rare - despite distributing messages far and wide on the internet (and sometimes on leaflets). I now realise that EVIL processes in people's minds need to be overridden by more powerful GOOD processes to persuade them to access my website, although sometimes access has been stopped completely (e.g. at the time of the Socialist Workers Party's "Marxism 2004" event that summer and just after my visit to the Declaration of Calton Hill protest organised by the Scottish Socialist Party in Edinburgh on the 9th of October 2004). I have now massively revamped the website and put it on a much faster server, and put it at http://www.socialiststeve.me.uk. Statistics for the website, including hits, can be found from a link at the bottom of that page.

Big business needs to resort to forms of "mind control" (including by machines and hypnosis by people) to outwit a working class which massively outnumbers them. Whereas I think that some people, like Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin, Saddam Hussein, George W Bush and Muqtada al-Sadr are aware that they have committed/are committing evil acts which help keep big business in power across the globe, most people whose internal variable is EVIL are not aware of it and the role that they are playing. Putting the happiness or success of people in your own family, friends, race, religion or nationality above that of homo sapiens as a whole is however a sign that your internal variable is currently EVIL (but of course it can be changed in various ways, e.g. by rational argument, or in the course of a strike in which black, Asian and white workers are brought together in their battle against big business).

Music has always been used as part of the class struggle, because songwriters, singers and musicians can influence other people's views (in subtle or blatant ways) by putting messages in the music. Most songs are about love, but even if the songwriter is unaware of it, his or her subconscious is planting messages in songs.

Every genre of music originated from a particular class, either struggling to overthrow its oppressors or maintain its oppression. Note that capitalism was progressive in the past in its struggle to overthrow feudalism, during the French revolution for example, where small businesspeople and peasants united to overthrow the existing order.

Some genres of music originated from the ruling class (which today is big business), others from the oppressed class (generally the working class but alongside the peasantry in the underdeveloped countries: the so-called "third world"). Of course there are many examples of musicians who were on the opposite side to the originators of the genre of the track that they have performed.

In my opinion, classical, heavy metal and rap originated from the ruling classes, whereas folk, rock and roll, reggae, soul and gospel originated from the oppressed classes (usually black people, but I think that folk originated amongst ordinary white people in Britain and Ireland). Classical was convenient for the ruling classes because members of the oppressed classes have found it very hard to decipher the meaning of symphonies, due to the lack of words. Heavy metal is also convenient because you often can't hear the words. [Indeed, a lot of modern pop music that has reached the charts, in other genres like soul and R&B, contains words that are sung in such a way that is very hard to hear them; I believe that this is a deliberate policy of the record industry, backed up by people on the side of big business working in the TV industry (in particular those who decide what songs to promote before they reach the charts on the ITV1 programme "CD:UK") and the bureaucrats who choose the Radio 1 playlist which restricts what the DJs are allowed to play.]

Rap originated with black gangs in the USA, many of whom were into drugs and guns, with inter-gang rivalries leading to many murders. Such gangs have historically played a negative role in the struggle for black liberation, in contrast to Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and the Black Panther Party (the latter armed themselves for self-defence, and argued against the waste of lives caused by gangs, so their use of guns was a different matter entirely). Rap music tends to play a negative role today, because it is often played loudly out of car stereos by black men, irritating white neighbours (and turning some of them into racists) due to the way it tends to grate on the ears. Softer forms of rap, perhaps combined with other genres (such as at least some songs performed by the Fugees, Ms Dynamite, the Black Eyed Peas or Kelis) can play a positive role. Eminem has rightly been criticised for homophobic and sexist lyrics in some of his songs, but I liked two of Eminem's earliest songs "Stan" and "The Real Slim Shady" (particularly "Stan" since Dido sang very well on it); they didn't grate on the ears and there were no dodgy lyrics that I recognised. However, Eminem then started coming up with material that sounded absolutely dreadful and with lyrics that could not easily be deciphered, perhaps because he had not then worked out powerful politics to put forward, and he instead wanted to win over those who liked such stuff when he later came up with his album "Encore" (which contains excellent politics particularly against George W Bush and the war on Iraq).

The advice that artists get from their agents or others in the music industry is important. In the BBC's TV series "Fame Academy", black singer Lemar did a brilliant version of Sinéad O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U", which he dedicated to his girlfriend (a sign that he really liked it). However, in the final, when the singers were asked to choose their best song from the series, he performed a really uninteresting soul song and came third, against David Sneddon and Sinéad Quinn - and when he got a record contract he carried on with that formula. However, some of his more recent songs have shown much more originality, and do not neatly fit into a particular genre. For more about "Fame Academy" visit the following discussion group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fame-academy

I tend to prefer songs and artists which combine genres, since they are generally more original than those who stick to one. I like good love songs, but I tend to prefer songs with explicitly left-wing lyrics.

I now regard Katrina and the Waves as my favourite band of all time. I was very keen on their song "Walking on Sunshine" when it came out (and liked most of the songs on their albums as well) but didn't realise how good they were politically at the time. When I fairly recently bought "The original recordings: 1983-1984" and read comments about the genres of that band, a considerable list were mentioned, which helped explain why I liked them so much. I finally found out how good their politics were when I bought their CD "Roses" in Canada, the only country in which it is available because it is so important (although the same CD was released under the name "Turnaround" in a different country). I recently got hold of it again via ebay, having had it stolen along with most of my collection a few years ago; the thief or thieves nicely left me with most of my better CDs but not that one. On that CD is my favourite song of all time, "Walking Where the Roses Grow" - which I interpret as being a great environmental song: I don't want to go to the capitalist city paved with gold but to the countryside "where the roses grow". The CD also contains a great anti-war song called "23rd Psalm". Katrina and the Waves also performed "Love Shine a Light", which won the Eurovision Song Contest by far the biggest margin ever - because it spread a message of love around the world which would mean an end to wars; it can also be interpreted as an anti-racist song. It appeared on the "Walk on Water" album which is good but not as good as "Roses", and there is a brilliant "Xenomania club mix" on the CD single. I've created the following discussion groups around the band and those songs:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/katrina-and-the-waves
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/walking-where-the-roses-grow
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/23rd-psalm

My favourite overtly political band of all-time is Latin Quarter. Their only hit was "Radio Africa" - it was flawed because it said that there was only bad and sad news on Radio Africa at the time that there were revolutionary movements in South Africa (although it can be interpreted as saying that positive things happening in Africa were not reported on the radio). There are two brilliant songs on the album "Modern Times" on which "Radio Africa" appears: "America for Beginners" (about the devious means in which big business stays in power in the USA) and "Cora" (about a working class woman's life through the ages). Their third album "Swimming Against the Stream", which is very hard to get hold of (like "Roses"), is their best album; it was released shortly before the collapse of Stalinism in the USSR and Eastern Europe, after which their lyrics became obscure reflecting the difficulty in coming up with good political songs at a difficult time for the left. That album includes "A Slow Waltz for Chile" (describing life and death under the Pinochet dictatorship, which is rather pessimistic but very moving), plus "Dominion" (about animal rights) and "Something isn't Happening" (an excellent song about the lack of real change under capitalism). I have been repeatedly thrown off the Latin Quarter discussion group called "alittlelatinquarter" and the moderator has even deleted messages I had already sent, so that those who read them via the web may not have seen them. Since Steve Skaith (who was originally one of three singers but by the final albums was the only one left) has now formed the Steve Skaith Band with other musicians, I have created a new discussion group around Latin Quarter and the Steve Skaith Band. I've set up further groups around the best album and particular songs:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/latin-quarter-and-steve-skaith
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/america-for-beginners
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cora-lq
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/swimming-against-the-stream
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/slow-waltz-for-chile
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dominion-lq
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/something-isnt-happening

My favourite song and album of 2004 is Green Day's "American Idiot". I have therefore set up a group around them:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/american-idiot

One of my karaoke specialities is Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls of Fire". The version of that song on the soundtrack of the film with the same name is much better than any other version I have heard, but I think I can sing it even better (although there is a need for a brilliant keyboard player to accompany me). Although outwardly a love song, I think the great balls of fire could be interpreted as fireballs travelling from one planet to another to destroy the latter, which is what would happen if George W Bush mastered outer space. The following discussion group is based around "Great Balls of Fire":

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/great-balls-of-fire

I've also set up the following discussion group around the artist Colin Vearncombe (a white singer/guitarist/songwriter formerly known as "Black", who had three hits, "Wonderful Life", "Sweetest Smile" and "Paradise"):

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/colin-vearncombe

Bruce Springsteen's anti-war song "No Surrender" from the "Born in the USA" album is particularly good, and the fact that it was played as Senator Kerry went down the aisle at the Democrats' Convention in 2004 indicated that he was not as pro-war as it seemed! Bruce is unfortunately not as political now (if at all), but I've set up the following group around that song:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/no-surrender-springsteen

I have also set up a group around the female Scottish singer Eddi Reader (who performed the hit single "The Patience of Angels" and was previously in Fairground Attraction and sang the number one hit "Perfect"):

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/patience-of-angels

My favourite duet of all time, which is very political because it gives hope to a man in a suicidal frame of mind due to the capitalist system he lives in is "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. The only music newsgroup (accessible via Google) that I have been able to send messages to - until a new version of newsgroup software was installed at http://groups.google.co.uk - is rec.music.gaffa for fans of Kate and similar kinds of music (it is named after Kate's song "Suspended in Gaffa"), because of the heavy censorship of other music newsgroups. If you join the "love hounds" mailing list (named after Kate's album and single "The Hounds of Love", see http://gaffa.org/faq/faq_1_2.html) you can send messages straight to the list and newsgroup. Therefore I have sent a lot of political messages to it over the years (some to do with music, others not). I have set up the following discussion group based around the song "Don't Give Up":

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dont-give-up

My main project for leading the world socialist revolution is my revolutionary socialist band Galaxia, named after the left-wing future of the galaxy in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series. I have participated in a lot of conventional political campaigns over the last fifteen and a half years, but that alone won't achieve socialism; I am confident that Galaxia can lead the way in educating young (and not so young) people and inspiring them to play leading roles themselves in overthrowing the multinationals that control the planet inflicting so much misery and death on ordinary people around the globe.

I put an appeal out on the internet before our first recordings (on the 30th of June at the Cutting Rooms, Manchester) for anybody who desired to participate, specifically inviting some famous people - Martine McCutcheon, (see http://www.socialiststeve.me.uk/martine.htm), Konnie Huq (who appeared on and was the subject of racism and mind control in "Comic Relief does Fame Academy", see http://groups.yahoo.com/group/konnie-huq-fans), the three Waves from Katrina and the Waves (Kimberley Rew on guitar, Vince de la Cruz on bass guitar and Alex Cooper on drums) and Yona Dunsford from Latin Quarter on keyboards and backing vocals. However, unsurprisingly, none of them turned up and I sang the three songs ("Do They Know It's G8 Time?", "The Revolution Starts Now!" and "L'Internaçionale") simply accompanied on the first two songs by Adam from the Cutting Rooms on acoustic guitar.

Adam told me that he did not want to be involved with Galaxia in the future and I now plan to reform the band with the first serious love of my life, Rhiannon Williams, who I knew at school in Penarth, near Cardiff.

Galaxia's first tracks promoted the idea of a worldwide general strike at the time of the G8 summit in July 2005 (in Gleneagles, Scotland). That was a rush-job and strike action did not take off, but Galaxia will go on a world tour performing updated versions of "Do They Know It's G8 Time?" and "The Revolution Starts Now!" as well as other songs, including going to South Africa (where we may record an album with the same name as Colin Vearncombe's "Live at the Bassline Johannesburg"), to seriously publicise my call for a worldwide general strike at the time of the 2006 summit (which takes place in St Petersburg, Russia).

I just found out about Galaxia, and was pleased to find that Steve had
contacted Katrina Leskanich to possibly enlist Kimberly Rew, et al. On
guitar, Kimberly is really as good as they come. I do not know his
political position, though, nor that of Vince De La Cuz or Alex Cooper,
respectively. From what I have heard, Kimberly Rew has been working
with Robyn Hitchcock and touring as Soft Boys again.
Another possibly kindered soul is Don Henley.

I have produced copies of the following leaflet, in the name of the Revolutionary Platform of Respect (for which I have just set up the website www.revolutionaryplatformofrespect.org), for distribution before and during the conference of Respect: the Unity Coalition, which takes place at the weekend. There is a fringe meeting at the conference to form a Respect left opposition (not organised by me), which I am advertising on the leaflet.

Galloway shook the world by revealing live on TV that Rumsfeld sold arms to Saddam Hussein

George Galloway’s victory for Respect in the May general election wasn’t a huge shock, bearing in mind the facts that the constituency he stood in (Bethnal Green & Bow) has the second highest number of Muslims in the UK (estimated at 45,000) and that he received a large amount of media coverage during the election campaign. Indeed, the bookies predicted he would win as soon as he announced his candidacy.

However, Galloway’s performance in the US Senate when defending himself against accusations that he profited from the oil-for-food programme (which was part of the sanctions regime imposed by the West that killed over 500,000 babies and children) did shake the world. It was when he revealed that US “Defense” Secretary Donald Rumsfeld had met Saddam Hussein the same number of times as himself, but that Rumsfeld met him to sell him arms and maps the better target those arms (presumably supplied by the CIA), that there were gasps from the audience. Media censorship had prevented all but a tiny proportion of Americans from finding out about US complicity in the arming of Saddam, but TV channels in the US and UK dutifully broadcast Galloway’s comments live.

So why did the big business-controlled media help Galloway get elected and then broadcast his Senate performance live? Obviously they thought that he was on their side! After all, he had shaken hands with Saddam and said “Sir, I salute your courage, your strength, your indefatigability”. He had also urged Tommy Sheridan to join Respect and stand against the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP) at the next Scottish parliamentary elections splitting the left, which has united north of the border, after Sheridan’s resignation as SSP Convenor. Galloway was either pretending to be an agent of big business at those times in the past, so that the media would expect him to destroy the anti-war movement, or he really was but recently switched sides to that of the working class.

Revolutionary socialists in Respect should unite

George Galloway’s Senate performance has ensured that Respect is now by far the most important organisation to the left of the main parties in England. However, there is a tendency for Galloway and the Socialist Workers Party to put forward lowest common denominator politics and not even mention socialism never mind the need for a world socialist revolution to take control of the planet’s resources out of the hands of big business.

A fringe meeting at Respect’s annual conference (see the boxes below) will discuss launching some sort of left opposition to the Respect leadership. This opposition should be an organisation whose only requirement is that members are revolutionaries who want Respect and its spokespersons to put forward more explicitly revolutionary socialist politics.

Britain will be first country to monitor every car journey

From 2006 Britain will be the first country where every journey by every car will be monitored

By Steve Connor, Science Editor

Published: 22 December 2005

Britain is to become the first country in the world where the movements of all vehicles on the roads are recorded. A new national surveillance system will hold the records for at least two years.
Using a network of cameras that can automatically read every passing number plate, the plan is to build a huge database of vehicle movements so that the police and security services can analyse any journey a driver has made over several years.
The network will incorporate thousands of existing CCTV cameras which are being converted to read number plates automatically night and day to provide 24/7 coverage of all motorways and main roads, as well as towns, cities, ports and petrol-station forecourts.
By next March a central database installed alongside the Police National Computer in Hendon, north London, will store the details of 35 million number-plate "reads" per day. These will include time, date and precise location, with camera sites monitored by global positioning satellites.
Already there are plans to extend the database by increasing the storage period to five years and by linking thousands of additional cameras so that details of up to 100 million number plates can be fed each day into the central databank.
Senior police officers have described the surveillance network as possibly the biggest advance in the technology of crime detection and prevention since the introduction of DNA fingerprinting.
But others concerned about civil liberties will be worried that the movements of millions of law-abiding people will soon be routinely recorded and kept on a central computer database for years.
The new national data centre of vehicle movements will form the basis of a sophisticated surveillance tool that lies at the heart of an operation designed to drive criminals off the road.
In the process, the data centre will provide unrivalled opportunities to gather intelligence data on the movements and associations of organised gangs and terrorist suspects whenever they use cars, vans or motorcycles.
The scheme is being orchestrated by the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) and has the full backing of ministers who have sanctioned the spending of £24m this year on equipment.
More than 50 local authorities have signed agreements to allow the police to convert thousands of existing traffic cameras so they can read number plates automatically. The data will then be transmitted to Hendon via a secure police communications network.
Chief constables are also on the verge of brokering agreements with the Highways Agency, supermarkets and petrol station owners to incorporate their own CCTV cameras into the network. In addition to cross-checking each number plate against stolen and suspect vehicles held on the Police National Computer, the national data centre will also check whether each vehicle is lawfully licensed, insured and has a valid MoT test certificate.
"Every time you make a car journey already, you'll be on CCTV somewhere. The difference is that, in future, the car's index plates will be read as well," said Frank Whiteley, Chief Constable of Hertfordshire and chairman of the Acpo steering committee on automatic number plate recognition (ANPR).
"What the data centre should be able to tell you is where a vehicle was in the past and where it is now, whether it was or wasn't at a particular location, and the routes taken to and from those crime scenes. Particularly important are associated vehicles," Mr Whiteley said.
The term "associated vehicles" means analysing convoys of cars, vans or trucks to see who is driving alongside a vehicle that is already known to be of interest to the police. Criminals, for instance, will drive somewhere in a lawful vehicle, steal a car and then drive back in convoy to commit further crimes "You're not necessarily interested in the stolen vehicle. You're interested in what's moving with the stolen vehicle," Mr Whiteley explained.
According to a strategy document drawn up by Acpo, the national data centre in Hendon will be at the heart of a surveillance operation that should deny criminals the use of the roads.
"The intention is to create a comprehensive ANPR camera and reader infrastructure across the country to stop displacement of crime from area to area and to allow a comprehensive picture of vehicle movements to be captured," the Acpo strategy says.
"This development forms the basis of a 24/7 vehicle movement database that will revolutionise arrest, intelligence and crime investigation opportunities on a national basis," it says.
Mr Whiteley said MI5 will also use the database. "Clearly there are values for this in counter-terrorism," he said.
"The security services will use it for purposes that I frankly don't have access to. It's part of public protection. If the security services did not have access to this, we'd be negligent."

Surveillance UK: why this revolution is only the start

By Steve Connor, Science Editor

Published: 22 December 2005

The new national surveillance network for tracking car journeys, which has taken more than 25 years to develop, is only the beginning of plans to monitor the movements of all British citizens. The Home Office Scientific Development Branch in Hertfordshire is already working on ways of automatically recognising human faces by computer, which many people would see as truly introducing the prospect of Orwellian street surveillance, where our every move is recorded and stored by machines.
Although the problems of facial recognition by computer are far more formidable than for car number plates, experts believe it is only a matter of time before machines can reliably pull a face out of a crowd of moving people.
If the police and security services can show that a national surveillance operation based on recording car movements can protect the public against criminals and terrorists, there will be a strong political will to do the same with street cameras designed to monitor the flow of human traffic.
A major feature of the national surveillance centre for car numbers is the ability to trawl through records of previous sightings to build up an intelligence picture of a vehicle's precise whereabouts on the road network.
However, the Home Office and police believe that the Big Brother nature of the operation can be justified on the basis of the technology's proven ability to catch criminals. "In simple terms criminals use vehicles. If you want to commit a crime, you're going to use a vehicle," said Frank Whiteley, the Chief Constable of Hertfordshire, who leads the project. " There is nothing secretive about it and we don't want it to be secret, because we want people to feel safer, to see that they are protected."
A 13-month pilot scheme between 2003 and 2004 found the performance of the police improved dramatically when they had access automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras. Project Laser 2 involved 23 police forces using specially fitted vans with ANPR cameras linked to a police database. It led to a fivefold increase in the arrest rate for frontline officers.
But these mobile units will constitute only a tiny proportion of the many thousands of ANPR cameras that by next year will be feeding more than 35 million number plate "reads" every day into the new national data centre at Hendon, north London, the same site as the Police National Computer.
Mr Whiteley, chairman of the ANPR steering committee, said the intention eventually was to move from the "low thousands" of cameras to the " high thousands".
One camera can cover many motorway lanes. Just two ANPR devices, for instance, cover north and south movements through the 27 lanes of the Dartford crossing toll area on the Thames.
By March next year, most motorways, main roads, town centres and petrol station forecourts will be also covered. Some cameras may be disguised for covert operations but the majority will be ordinary CCTV traffic cameras converted to read number plates. "What we're trying to do as far as we can is to stitch together the existing camera network rather than install a huge number of new cameras," Mr Whiteley said.
More than 50 local authorities have already signed up to allow the police access to data gathered from their CCTV traffic cameras. Northampton, Bradford, Stoke and the City of London have had ANPR cameras in use for some time. Many smaller towns, such as St Albans, Stevenage and Watford are in the process of being wired up.
"We also talking to the commercial sector about their sites, particular garage forecourts. One of the biggest truisms about vehicles is that they have got to fill up with petrol," he explained.
Supermarkets are soon to agree a deal that will lead to all cars entering their garage forecourts having details of their number plates sent to Hendon. In return, the retailers will receive warning information about those drivers most likely to "bilk" - drive off without paying their bill.
The plan beyond March 2006 - when the national data centre goes live - is to expand the capacity of the system to log the time, date and whereabouts of up to 100 million number plates a day. "In crude terms we're interested in between two and three per cent of all vehicles on the roads," Mr Whiteley said.
"We can use ANPR on investigations or we can use it looking forward in a proactive, intelligence way. Things like building up the lifestyle of criminals - where they are going to be at certain times. We seek to link the criminal to the vehicle through intelligence. Vehicles moving on the roads are open to police scrutiny at any time. The Road Traffic Act gives us the right to stop vehicles at any time for any purpose. So criminals on public roads are vulnerable.
"What makes them doubly vulnerable is that most criminals not only burgle and steal, but they also don't bother to tax their vehicles, insure them and things like that," Mr Whiteley said.
Early in the new year the National ANPR Data Centre will be able to cross-check its database against all vehicles lawfully taxed and insured. All unlawful vehicles will be flagged and when they pass an ANPR camera their movements will register as "hits". The Home Office and the police believe that such a surveillance tool will have a dramatic impact on crime detection as well as the public's attitude to traffic policing.
"The first plus is that we can concentrate our resources on the vehicles we should be stopping. The other plus side is that the 97 per cent of law-abiding motorists should never be bothered by that," Mr Whiteley said.
The National ANPR Data Centre is being built alongside the Police National Computer because of the need to be constantly updated with lists of suspect drivers and vehicles. The design of the system will also take into account future changes to the way cars will be recognised, such as electronic vehicle identification - when a unique identity chip is built in to the bodywork.
Identity chips are being considered as part of a new road-pricing system based on a network of roadside radio receivers. Such electronic tags would, however, also allow a car's movements to be recorded without the need of number-plate cameras.
Asked whether ANPR will be as important as the forensic use of fingerprints and DNA profiling, Mr Whiteley replied: "It has the capability to be as revolutionary. I would describe it as an ubiquitous policing tool. You can use it in all sorts of different ways."
HOW THE INFORMATION IS GATHERED
Fixed cameras at strategic sites
Many thousands of traffic cameras on main roads, motorways, ports and petrol stations will read car numbers using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)
Mobile units
Every force will have a fleet of specially fitted police vans with ANPR cameras. These will work alongside high-speed intercept officers
CCTV in towns & cities
Many existing traffic cameras in towns and cities are being converted to read number plates automatically as part of the new national surveillance network
CONSTANT UPDATES
Police National Computer
The PNC will supply updates on vehicles and drivers of interest to the police
Insurance data
Uninsured drivers will be identified from data provided by the insurance industry
MoT data
Vehicles without a valid MoT test certificate will be flagged
Vehicle licence data
All vehicles without a valid tax disc or with unlawful number plates will be identified
WHERE THE INFORMATION GOES
The new National ANPR Data Centre is to be based at Hendon in north London, the site of the existing Police National Computer. It is being designed to store 35 million number plate 'reads' per day, to be expanded to 100 million reads within a couple of years. The time, date and place of each vehicle sighting will be stored for at least two years, with plans to extend this period to five years. Special 'data mining' software can trawl for movements and associations
WHO USES THE INFORMATION
Police
Every police force will have direct computer access to the National ANPR Data Centre. Intelligence officers will be able to access data on a car's movements over a number of years
MI5
The Security Services have special exemption under the Data Protection Act to use ANPR information for purposes of national security. Anti-terrorism will be their main interest

Launch a mass broad socialist party led by revolutionaries

Majority votes for socialism in Bolivia

In the recent Bolivian Presidential election, union leader Evo Morales was elected with over half the votes, the first time this has ever happened. The 7 January report of this victory in Socialist Worker (the newspaper of the SWP), said that Morales was a candidate of the MAS but failed to mention what MAS stands for – Movement Towards Socialism! Clearly the SWP leadership was worried that mentioning that the party has “socialism” in its name would undermine their argument that it is necessary to hide socialism when standing for election in this country, as they are doing with Respect.
Morales’ victory was a consequence of the general strikes, demonstrations, occupations of workplaces and street blockades, which erupted earlier in 2005 calling for the nationalisation of gas and oil.  In Britain, mass movements of working class people will be necessary for a left-wing party to similarly come to power but we need to prepare the ground now by establishing such a party. Labour is now a party of big business like the Tories and Lib Dems, and there is so little difference between Blair, Brown and Cameron that a big vacuum exists which a new party could start to fill.

Respect crisis exacerbated by Big Brother

In deciding to appear on Channel 4’s Celebrity Big Brother, Respect MP George Galloway has swiftly gone from hero (due to his barnstorming appearance in Washington in front of the Senate committee that accused him of profiteering from Iraq’s oil-for-food programme, where he pointed out live on TV both sides of the Atlantic that US “defense” secretary Donald Rumsfeld met Saddam Hussein to sell him arms) to laughing stock. He has hit the headlines for the wrong reasons, accused of bullying “glamour model” Jodie Marsh and imitating a cat! Appearing on the programme with a Page 3 model had already caused some of his Muslim constituents to demonstrate against him (which he was unaware of since he is cut off from outside events inside the Big Brother house), and perhaps his decision to behave harshly towards Marsh was influenced by him trying to ingratiate himself with those opposed to the portrayal of women as sex objects (particularly Respect’s Muslim base). Some of Galloway’s allies have complained about censorship but Channel 4 spokespersons say that they warned him he would not be allowed to use the programme as a political soapbox. On the few occasions his political talk has been broadcast he has been far from astute, siding with fur-wearing Pete Burns against vegetarian Marsh and saying that Saddam Hussein was not hated by his own people (if he really thought that, he could have explained that it was due to the sanctions imposed by the West). The SWP have criticised Galloway’s decision to go on the programme, which they only had 24 hours notice of, but they are standing by him.
Galloway has a big ego and with his conscious mind he is probably mainly motivated by boosting it and actually becoming a celebrity. However, deep down in people’s brains, coming to the surface sometimes for some people (especially those involved in politics) are considerations about how to help your own real side in the class struggle, the working class or big business – depending on whether you want a world based on cooperation rather than competition. There are infiltrators on both sides within every organisation of more than a few people. It appears that Galloway has switched sides on more than one occasion in his life – from big business (when he met Saddam Hussein and praised his “courage” and “indefatigability”) to the working class (when he exposed Rumsfeld), and back again before Big Brother.
It was clear that Respect was in crisis from the fact that its membership, at about 4,000, had hardly changed between the 2004 conference and the latest one in November 2005, despite Galloway getting elected at the general election and then appearing in Washington. Galloway attracted big audiences but people weren’t as keen on joining Respect without it being clear what it stands for. Additionally, the SWP are very intolerant of criticism within Respect.

Support the Campaign for a New Workers’ Party

The Socialist Party (formerly the Militant Tendency), which I was a member of for about eight and a half years from when it was leading the mass non-payment campaign that defeated the poll tax until if opposed the setting up of the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP), recently launched the Campaign for a New Workers’ Party (www.cnwp.org.uk). Particularly due to Respect’s crisis, this is the most promising route to a broad socialist party led by revolutionaries like the SSP.  It is organising a conference at the University of London Union (on Malet Street, London NW1) on Sunday the 19th of March. Even if that conference doesn’t launch a new party, it should plan a timetable for one to be established.
The attempt to win mass support should not entail hiding revolutionary socialist politics, pretending to be in favour of gradual change via reforms (which can never lead to socialism since they are replaced by counter-reforms during recessions). The broad socialist party should have open factions (like the SSP’s platforms) and members should be encouraged to state which platforms they are members of when writing articles in the party’s newspaper or speaking at meetings. I would attempt to unite all revolutionary socialists within the party in a single “Revolutionary Platform” in favour of the party adopting revolutionary socialist politics.

'RFID tag' - the rude words ID card ministers won't say

Lengthy descriptions of duck, but no d-word. ..

By John Lettice

Published Monday 30th January 2006 11:41 GMT

When it comes to RFID, is MP Andy Burnham lying or drowning? If it's lying, then in principle the Home Office Minister is no more lying than other people are - the US Department of Homeland Security, the EU's Justice & Home Affairs Committee and impressive numbers of RFID, sorry, contactless, proximity chip vendors. But if he's not, the drowning act is pretty convincing.

For over six months now Burnham, pursued doggedly by MP and ID card opponent Lynne Jones, has been peddling the bizarre conceit that RFID and 'contactless' or 'proximity' chips are entirely different beasts. So, in July, he confirmed that for the UK ID card to be used as a travel document in Europe, "the card will need to meet standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which require the card to be contactless".* Presuming the information will not be moving across the air gap between the card and the reader using, say, smell, it's pretty obvious how that works, isn't it?

The contactless chips that will be used in ID cards and passports are amazingly like RFID tags. Place an RFID tag in the vicinity of a reader, and the reader can read data from it. Place an ID card or a passport in the vicinity of a reader and... you get the idea. Proponents and vendors of biometric ID however have noted that the general public seems to have some kind of privacy issue with the term "RFID", for some reason fearing that RFID ID documents involve them becoming tagged and monitored crates in the homeland security industry's supply chain. So, as Wired explained last year, the strangely RFID-like chips in biometric ID are instead to be called contactless or proximity chips.

And that's the brochure Burnham has been singing to Parliament from. He flew close to the wind in December, when he told Lynne Jones: "There are no plans to use radio frequency identification tags in ID cards... suppliers were asked for their views on the durability and costs of contact, contact-less, dual interface and hybrid cards. This survey concluded that a 10 year life for a contact-less card, incorporating a secure smartcard chip with a radio frequency contactless interface, was feasible." Got that? So the Home Office isn't using RFID tags, but is using a "chip with a radio frequency contactless interface".

Jones played this with a dead bat and returned in January: "There are no plans to use radio frequency identification tags," Burnham told her. "They would serve no purpose which is relevant to the identity cards scheme." Aside from doing precisely what the not-an-RFID-tag that's already going into ID cards will be doing, that is.

Last week however the Mirror grasped (albeit somewhat shakily) the import of this and deduced that "spy chips" in ID cards "carry radio transmitters" and will mean "law abiding citizens" will be tagged like criminals on parole." In its defence, the Mirror has managed to get to pretty much the right answer via a slightly esoteric route, and it does seem to have seen a letter from Burnham where he concedes that radio is somehow involved: "a travel document such as an identity will need to incorporate a 'contactless' or 'proximity' chip. This will require the card to use radio frequencies to allow the card to be read at a very short distance."

The people-tracking aspect was picked up by the Sunday Telegraph with some help from No2ID, and the Telegraph also suggests Burnham has been misleading Parliament and the public. Lying or drowning? You decide...

Burnham's bobbing and weaving over RFID has certainly helped him avoid getting to the whole truth about contactless (if you like, Andy...) chips in passports and ID cards. Which is approximately as follows. RFID tags can be read at quite a long range, this being helpful if you happen to be using the technology to handle. say, pallets of gear in warehouses. Contactless chips in passports and ID cards work just like this, but obviously you only want them to be able to be read when they're a couple of centimetres from the official reader. The other thing you want is that they be sufficiently secure for them not to be read by unauthorised readers, so with ID documents you're likely to need to implement some form of encryption. This wouldn't generally be necessary for the tagging of stuff in warehouses.

Last February, Immigration Minister Des Browne gave details of the chip for the passport in an answer to Mark Oaten: "The biometric passport will contain a radio frequency contactless integrated circuit that conforms to ISO 14443 in accordance with ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) recommendations on biometric travel documents. It will be a close proximity type chip that can only work within 0–2 cm from a reader." At that stage Browne claimed that no decision had been made on making the ID card similarly contactless. In October and December Burnham said the Home Office was "considering" (oddly, given that he'd pretty much confirmed it in July) using contactless chips "which contain radio frequency chips" and that "We will ensure that sensitive data on the chip is encrypted and are aiming to do this through adoption of emerging International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards. These provide significantly more security of data than exists today." It's not entirely clear that any emerging ICAO security standards have emerged yet, or in what senses data on the new card will be significantly more secure than is the case in the current situation, i.e. not having an ID card to have data on. The ID cards programme, however, has "reviewed technical methodologies for anti-skimming measures for contactless cards which are compliant with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) recommendations for machine-readable travel documents."

The "anti-skimming measures" being considered are likely to be akin to those proposed for the US biometric passport, where the binding includes a barrier layer, meaning the passport's chip can only be read when the passport is open. An ID card implementation would need to use a tinfoil sleeve or similar, so that it could only be read when the bearer had removed it. But yes, well-spotted - if as Browne says the chip can only be read from 0-2 cm, what do they need anti-skimming for? Or indeed, security, which they still haven't told us about?

Because, fortunately, they don't really believe the chips can only be read from 2 cm. Various independent tests have demonstrated that with the right equipment, these chips can be read from considerably greater distances. There aren't enough biometric passports out there yet for anybody to have bothered making a serious stab at subverting them, but we'd be wise to anticipate that when there are, snoopers will put effort into reading them (and in our case, ID cards) from greater distances than have been achieved so far. Being able to read the chip doesn't get you far if you can't crack the security and read the data, but the omens on security aren't particularly good either. Last year, Bruce Schneier explained how the collision avoidance system in RFID chips including, erm, "the ones specified for US passports" conforming to ISO 14443A (see Browne's answer, above) provided a route to subvert any access control system the chip's passport application might have. They're insecure by design, because the basic design is intended for vast numbers of cheap chips labelling everything in Walmart. And just last week it was demonstrated that the Dutch passport, one of the first biometric passports to ship, could be snooped and its security cracked.

It does rather seem as if there aren't any simple answers to the questions the Home Office isn't answering, doesn't it? And, if we go back to the Mirror's outrage on tagging and tracking of innocent citizens, we have another one worth considering. We can, for the next few years anyway, reasonably discount the notion that a network of surreptitious Government readers will be monitoring our every move, because while it's probably feasible to snoop on cards from a reasonable range, there's not really a huge pay-off from doing so for the outfit that already controls the network. The Government will however log your travel when you have to run your card over a reader, and have a record of all of the transactions you conduct with it, so will be able to put together a pretty fair picture of your life and movements. But that's the network and the database, nothing to do with the RFID tagging. ®

* There is, we think some UK Government obfuscation we haven't covered much. As far as we're aware there is not yet an ICAO standard for an ID card format document to be used as an international travel document, and mutual recognition of ID documents for travel within Europe is a matter for the EU. The US is also looking at card-style travel documents to be used at its own land borders. It's logical that biometric ID cards used for travel should use the same readers as passports, and hence be compatible with the ICAO passport standards, but as an EU standard for biometric ID cards does not yet exist (it has been proposed, by, er, the UK), there clearly can be no biometric requirement of any description for ID card-based travel within the EU. We could of course be wrong about ICAO not having a standard yet, and if we're not, we feel sure we will be, Real Soon Now.

I include below my latest document, which I have produced copies of to hand out as a double-sided A4 leaflet. It is a massively modified version of the start of the old version of my document called "The brain, politics and music", cutting out the musical content, which I have left in the latest version (6) of the latter. Both documents can be found at: www.socialiststeve.me.uk/documents.htm.

--

This document contains my current opinions regarding how people’s brains work. Most attempts at this do so in terms of low-level concepts such as neurons firing and the balance of chemicals within the brain, but it is only through adopting a high-level approach like mine that it is possible to understand why people behave in the way they do, especially with regard to the future of the planet. From a scientific point of view, it is necessary to test out hypotheses such as those in this document, which is something I do all the time in my interactions with others and my reasoning about why I have acted in the way I have.

There are two key classes in society: the working class and big business. People can be on one side of the class struggle or the other (LEFT or RIGHT) or they can be NEUTRAL. This may be reflected by a variable within his or her mind, which can take one of those three values and be subject to change as a result of interactions with others or deductions, or it can be “hard-wired” in the arrangement of neurons within the brain (and therefore remain constant unless a dramatic restructuring takes place). LEFT-wing people are on the side of the working class and are either revolutionary socialists (in which case they are in favour of a socialist world based on cooperation – the only way of ending poverty, famines, unemployment, homelessness, environmental destruction, deaths from preventable diseases, discrimination and of course wars – and realise that a sudden change is needed to achieve such a society) or reformists (in which case they are either in favour of a socialist world but wrongly think that it can be achieved by a series of gradual reforms or merely generally in favour of reforms which benefit the working class under the so-called “mixed economy”, i.e. capitalism, a society based on competition). RIGHT-wing people are on the side of big business and are reactionaries (who are generally in favour of counter-reforms which benefit big business, or middle class people at the expense of the working class, in this capitalist society). NEUTRAL people include some of those who do not understand such political concepts (perhaps because they are too young) or who have no interest in politics. However, I have occasionally come across animals and birds that have clearly adopted sides in the class struggle (normally the working class, i.e. LEFT); they may have developed much greater intelligence than scientists credit them with in order to understand political concepts but I think that they merely have some way of analysing the friendliness of people and other animals and birds, and regard those on one side as good and those on the other side as evil. Most working class people are LEFT or NEUTRAL and most big businessmen and women are RIGHT, but there are many exceptions. Middle class people may also take either side. In a pre-revolutionary situation (when a socialist revolution may be about to take place), most NEUTRAL people will take one side or the other.

Note that this categorisation of people reflects the actual side everyone is on at any moment in time rather than the political views that they seem, on the surface, to believe in. There are many infiltrators within organisations on both sides who at times act against the interests of those organisations. Some but not all of them realise the role they are playing, particularly those who are members of conspiratorial organisations, some of which are part of the capitalist state like MI5 and the CIA, and other more secret ones are not (some of which are on the side of the working class and trying to change society for the better).

This categorisation is the most important determiner of your behaviour in whatever you do (including in your job or education, hobbies, friendships and love life, as well as in political activities). People on the same side generally cooperate with each other and people on opposite sides generally compete. NEUTRAL people tend to cooperate with people on both sides. Note that much of the time revolutionaries cooperate with reformists; after all, genuine revolutionary socialists tend to be the best fighters for reforms under capitalism.

There are multiple processes operating within everyone’s mind at any point in time, including one that I call the “main process” and which generates the conscious thoughts that the person is aware of. Note that the thinking done by the main process is much more complicated than the conscious thoughts that people are aware of; such thoughts are the result of thinking done by the main process in the subconscious and decisions are actually taken some tenths of a second before people think they are making them – this delay has been measured as reported in a TV series presented by Susan Greenfield. Other processes can be generated in and usually operate within the subconscious but they have the capability of interrupting the main process. Subconscious processes are needed to deal with interactions, both via the senses (such as seeing something and interrupting the main process when it is recognised) and performing repetitive tasks (such as walking). A Channel 5 TV programme called “The World’s Greatest Conspiracy Theories” revealed mind control as number one (according to number of websites discussing it), and I believe that it is used by people and machines on both sides, probably acting like an additional sense which generates processes in the mind being controlled. Subconscious processes are also needed to construct and modify the memory, including a model of the past and present state of the world (to some degree of complexity).

The main process within your mind uses the world model in order to predict the future and determine what you need to do to achieve your desired outcomes – with regard to the future society that you are in favour of (unless you are NEUTRAL) as well as the happiness of yourself, your family and friends, and perhaps your race, religion and nationality – for achieving all sorts of minor sub-goals in day to day tasks as well as the overall goals of your life. This was dubbed “psychohistory” by the science fiction author Isaac Asimov in his famous Foundation series, when applied to achieving a galactic revolution, and (in “Foundation’s Edge” and “Foundation and Earth” which extended the original trilogy that had right–wing plots to get past the censors) it had a very left–wing ending to the galaxy called “Galaxia”, which I am now using as the name for my revolutionary socialist band (see www.galaxiamusic.org). Psychohistory can be performed on computers as well as brains – e.g. by using my language SDML (see www.socialiststeve.me.uk/sdml.htm). In fact, I believe that the strongest conspiratorial organisations on both sides of the class struggle use SDML (or a more advanced language based on the research I did developing SDML due to limitations of my language in terms of speed and memory capacity) to perform psychohistorical modelling and try to outwit the other side.

The correctness of decisions you make via psychohistorical modelling using your brain is limited both by what you know and the time needed by your brain to make decisions. Consequently people make many mistakes in terms of achieving their goals. I particularly make mistakes when other processes are repeatedly interrupting my mind’s main process as a result of many stimuli and I have allowed these other processes to build up rather than resolving them quickly.

We need broad socialist parties led by revolutionaries

I mentioned above that most of the time revolutionary socialists unite with reformists; both are LEFT-wing. The working class around the world should form political parties based around such unity, with revolutionaries playing a leading role. The Scottish Socialist Party (SSP) is the best example of such a party anywhere in the world at present. The SSP correctly unites around reformist demands and has a number of platforms, mainly of revolutionaries, including the International Socialist Movement which has members in many leading positions. Unfortunately, however, revolutionaries in the SSP tend to hide their distinct politics from most people who are not already in the party and the SSP comes across to most people as reformist. They do not answer where the money will come from; the answer being that the working class needs to take over all the big companies only compensating pension funds and perhaps small shareholders with proven need. Revolutionaries should be encouraged to put forward their own views in the SSP newspaper and on leaflets, mentioning the platforms that they are members of.

Respect members are even more guilty of hiding their politics, usually failing to mention socialism at all when they speak at meetings or demonstrations, and only mention socialism on leaflets as one of several things that Respect stands for. Respect’s problems have been exacerbated by George Galloway appearing on Celebrity Big Brother. The most promising moves towards a party like the SSP (only bigger and better) are now the Respect Party Platform (www.respectpartyplatform.org) and the Campaign for a New Workers’ Party (www.cnwp.org.uk), which was set up by the Socialist Party and has a conference on Sunday the 19th of March in London (University of London Union, Malet Street, WC1).

There is a need for revolutionaries to unite together within such broad socialist parties, and I have created (initially as one person organisations) Revolutionary Platforms of both the SSP and Respect (see www.revolutionaryplatformofthessp.org and www.revolutionaryplatformofrespect.org).

Many of you will be aware that I have been locked up as a political prisoner in psychiatric wards (mental hospitals) for large parts of the last eight years.

I have in fact been incarcerated under sections of the Mental Health Act for one year, three months and a week. Today I was discharged!!!

I celebrated, first of all, by having a coffee with my primary nurse for the last six months, the wonderful Hannah Moolna. However, this evening I went to the most appropriate pub - the Revolution in Fallowfield, Manchester, to celebrate further.

As I write this, I am under the influence of two Mudslides, which contain both vodka and Bailey's. I am teemainly (as opposed to teetotal), in that (as a result of sampling a wide range of anti-psychotic medications, plus some mood stabilisers for good measure) I have become highly opposed to drugs in general, knowing how they make you less rational than you would be otherwise. Alcohol is of course a drug, and I have generally avoided it, drinking J2Os most of the time in pubs in England or Wales, and IrnBru (or "diet IrnBru" more recently in order to shed some of the excess weight that psychiatric medication has encouraged me to put on in recent years) in Scotland. However, a day like today is one for letting your hear down, and after sampling a strawberry flavour non-alcoholic drink at the Revolution, it was time to advance onto the more serious stuff!

I met two very nice (and very good looking!!!) women in the Revolution called Kylie and Fiona, and had a great chat with them, including singing parts of my Galaxia songs "Do They Know It's G8 Time?" and "The Revolution Starts Now!" (downloadable for free from the Galaxia website, www.galaxiamusic.org). We arranged to meet again for karaoke at the Footage pub on a week tomorrow (Tuesday) [on the corner of Oxford Road and Grosvenor Street in the centre of Manchester]. I had already discussed meeting with Sabrina and David of the Greater Manchester Democratic Socialist Alliance (GMDSA, as the best local socialist organisation will soon be named) and Sabrina's ex-partner Burhan Fatah (the leader in this country of the Worker-Communist Party of Iraq, which unites ordinary working class people of different religions and nationalities in Iraq opposed to the occupation) in that pub the same night. [Karaoke starts at 9pm, or later if there is football on the TV.] I am publicising this get-together widely in order that anybody reading this who is curious about my karaoke ability can witness my rendition of "Great Balls of Fire" and the odd other song that I may perform. Those who are not to curious, or who live rather further away, can wait for the world tour of Galaxia.

I am moving to Glasgow real soon now, although I'll be popping up to Manchester from time to time as it wouldn't be sensible to abandon a city that I have been conducting political activity in since the start of the anti-poll tax campaign in 1989. [That campaign of mass non-payment, which involved about 18 million people, at its height, not only forced the abolition of that hated tax, but brought down the supposedly invincible Margaret Thatcher, was led by the Militant Tendency - and I joined Militant in 1990, and stayed with it for eight and a half years as it became Militant Labour and the Socialist Party. I left when it failed to support the setting up of the Scottish Socialist Party, which now has six members of the Scottish parliament - because I wanted to expose the high level of infiltration (not just to spy on what we were doing but to destabilise the organisation from within) to a wider audience, and I thought it was better to resign first than get expelled for being disloyal.

In Glasgow I will set up my revolutionary socialist band Galaxia, and we will go on a world tour before the G8 summit in order to publicise the idea of a worldwide general strike then. In fact, bearing in mind that the current UK number one has reached that spot on download sales alone, Galaxia may possibly reach the same spot with "The Revolution Starts Now!" without needing to splash out on CDs...

This was yesterday's Daily Express front page article. I've included a leaflet I wrote on the assassination of Diana and two revolutionary socialists in Manchester later in this message...

SPIES SABOTAGE DIANA INQUIRY
Secret services in plot to hide truth over her death
Daily Express
3 Apr 2006

THE probe into Princess Diana’s death took a sinister twist last night as a top lawyer accused spies on both sides of the Channel of sabotage.

The claim will fuel fears of a cover-up orchestrated by the British and French secret services.

The intelligence agencies were supposed to help answer a series of questions set out by the Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights.

But a legal source close to the case, speaking to the Daily Express on condition of strict anonymity, has exposed this “co-operation” as a sham.

The lawyer revealed: “The French judiciary and police have been bad enough, but security agencies in both Britain and France have done everything possible to hamper the inquiry. They have done absolutely nothing to help answer vital questions and have stalled the judicial process.

“The feeling is that they know exactly what happened on the night Diana died, but do not want the truth to come out under any circumstances. The whole thing is extremely sinister.”

The intervention by the human rights court followed eight years during which the Paris authorities were accused of suppressing evidence and bungling vital forensic tests.
But the revelation that spies are still hampering the search for the truth is causing alarm.
The lawyer went on: “This has ranged from claiming that no spies were in Paris that
night – which is a complete lie – to interfering with vital evidence, and even with witnesses.”
The lawyer’s allegation has infuriated Harrods boss Mohamed Al Fayed, whose son Dodi died alongside Diana in the Paris car crash.

Mr Al Fayed said last night: “The French are very mistaken if they think I am leaving this alone. There’s is a blatant attempt to delay the report to Strasbourg

“I will use the full force of European law to compel them to expose the role of MI6 in the murder of my son and Princess Diana.

“Once again everything I have said has come true. There was a cover-up at the time and these people have been trying to suppress the truth ever since.”

Investigators are certain that representatives of the Secret Intelligence Service, better known as MI6, were operating in Paris on the night of August 31, 1997, when Diana was killed.

They are also sure that France’s DGSE – their equivalent of MI6 – was out in force.

Chauffeur Henri Paul was known to be working for both intelligence services and is believed to have met one of his minders hours before the fateful crash.

There was around £2,000 worth of French francs in Paul’s jacket pocket on the night he died.

Investigators are trying to trace the source of the unexplained cash, which points to spymasters who may have been planning Diana’s death. Both agencies have been called upon to solve riddles, including why it took so long for Diana to reach hospital.

They have also been asked to explain why pathologists broke French law by allowing Diana’s body to be embalmed – so making pregnancy tests invalid – and why blood tests on her so-called “drunk driver” Henri Paul have never been verified independently.

Strasbourg had originally demanded that the French government answer a number of questions by February of this year.

The deadline was then put back to this Thursday. But even this deadline has now proved impossible to meet.

Strasbourg hoped to allow outside agencies, and especially the families of those who died alongside the Princess, to demand answers about what really happened before, during and after the fatal car crash. Such was the seriousness with which the court viewed the case that it fast-tracked it through what is normally an incredibly protracted process.

The official French inquiry concluded in 1999 that driver Paul was drunk and speeding in a car he did not normally drive when he lost control entering the Alma tunnel.

But readings of carbon monoxide and alcohol in his body meant it would have been impossible for him to stand, let alone drive.

Mr Al Fayed has always claimed that his son and Diana were murdered.

Speculation was fuelled by a letter in which Diana said she feared she would die in a car crash and the brakes would be tampered with.

Last year Mr Al Fayed petitioned the European Court under human rights legislation which guarantees everybody the right to life. Mr Al Fayed’s lawyers successfully Monday April 3 2006 argued that the deaths were mysterious and that relatives of the deceased had a legal right to a proper investigation.

The ruling calls on the French to answer all questions as “a matter of urgency”.

Scores of questions were presented, including which security agencies were operating in Paris on the night of Diana’s death and whether her car been tampered with.

And why did it take so long for the French emergency services to get her to a hospital where she could have received life-saving attention?

The court also asked why potentially crucial CCTV film of the crash site has never been made available, and what information the authorities received from Henri Paul.

It also asked who was behind media leaks accusing Paul of being drunk and who exactly gave permission for Diana’s body to be embalmed.

The new evidence will be made available to British detectives currently taking part in the £4million inquiry into the death of Diana. Codenamed Operation Paget, it is being led by former Scotland Yard Commissioner Lord Stevens.

Detectives have always complained that co-operation from Paris has never been as good as they might expect.

The British police report into Diana’s death is expected to be completed by next year and the inquest will take place shortly afterwards.
The latest twist follows a series of allegations about a dirty tricks campaign by British spies.

Lord Stevens and his 12-strong squad have investigated the activities of the two MI6 officers in Paris on the night of the tragedy.

One of them was interviewed over allegations that he and a colleague were ordered to block investigations into MI6 surveillance of Diana.

The Assassination of Princess Diana

and of Manchester Socialist Party members Nathalie Monier and Stuart Ward

Review of Diana: Death of a Goddess by David Cohen

What really happened in her last few hours

and the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov

I bought the book on Princess Diana’s death from FOPP, a branch of the revolutionary socialist music/DVDs/book store, just off Market Street (by Tesco Metro) in Manchester City Centre. FOPP’s selection of political books is particularly good.

Music Zone is a socialist but not revolutionary chain, and HMV is a big business chain. Since Richard Branson is regarded as a good capitalist (and probably is), a lot of genuine working class young people work in Virgin Megastores in order to promote good albums (by ordering lots of copies or putting them in the sales); the store in Market Street was becoming a hive of revolution, which forced conspiratorial organisations on the side of big business to shut it down, leaving the big HMV as the only store in Manchester with a large selection of CDs. Music Zone’s books are not particularly good, so I’d suggest Waterstones (which has a very big branch on Deansgate and a smaller one on St. Ann’s Square) as an alternative source of books, including those by the most significant science fiction author of all time, Isaac Asimov. Avoid Amazon on the internet since I bought at least one book supposedly written by Isaac, called Magic, which clearly wasn’t written by him; I suspect that they produce different versions of particularly important books.

Isaac’s most important literature is the Foundation series that explains a lot about how the world works outcome in a story about the replacement of a crumbling empire by a new one over a period of 1,000 years (a galactic revolution). The main character Hari Seldon invents “psychohistory”, which entails building a model of the past and present on a computer in order to predict the future and decide what needs to be done in order to achieve a desired outcome. This is what the brain does all the time with all sorts of sub-tasks, but which is applied in the novels to achieving a galactic revolution; on the Earth, computer modelling is carried out by conspiratorial organisations on the side of the working class to ensure a world socialist revolution succeeds – and by conspiratorial organisations on the side of big business to try to stop us. I have developed a simulation language called SDML that is used for this task. For more information, visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/strictly-declarative-modelling-language. Two “Foundations” were set up by Hari at opposite ends of the galaxy, one to become the nucleus of a new empire and the Second Foundation (see http://groups.yahoo.com/group/second-foundation) whose members used mind reading/control powers ensure that the “Seldon plan” for the revolution was adhered to. Mind control was revealed as fact and number one in a list of “The World’s Greatest Conspiracy Theories” (with over 500,000 websites devoted to it) in a Channel 5 TV programme on the Thursday before Christmas. Foundation’s Edge and Foundation and Earth have a very left-wing ending (called “Galaxia”, which I am therefore using as the name for a new revolutionary socialist band – see http://groups.yahoo.com/group/galaxiamusic) and it is best to read them first; the original trilogy (Foundation, Foundation and Empire and Second Foundation) had right-wing plots to get round the censors in the 1950s.

The British state certainly had motives for assassinating Diana. She was the world’s greatest anti-war campaigner, due to her hugely successful campaign against landmines, and was going out with a Muslim. Imagine if she was alive two years ago – Blair would not have got away with supporting Bush’s war for oil on Iraq! Also, Diana was a huge embarrassment for the Royal Family, which would have been compounded if she had married Dodi Fayed or perhaps even had a baby with Dodi out of wedlock. There were rumours that Diana had a foetus in her stomach when she died, but the French state did not permit a proper autopsy or inquest, as David Cohen reveals in his book (based on a documentary he produced for Channel 5). There were many other cover-ups, including the fact that the French state cleaned the tunnel and opened it up to the public in a matter of hours, removing what could have been vital evidence!

I knew that Diana was assassinated when I first heard the news, since the most serious love of my life, Nathalie Monier, in Manchester Socialist Party, was assassinated in equally suspicious circumstances alongside Stuart Ward (an agent of big business and ex-squaddie who was also in the Socialist Party and Militant Tendency as it was known beforehand – Militant led the 18 million-strong mass non-payment campaign that defeated the poll tax and brought down Margaret Thatcher – see http://groups.yahoo.com/group/militant-tendency), called Stuart Ward, while waiting in Whalley Range – by a very fast car hired by two drug dealers, who of course are easy to manipulate by the “security services”, driving at over 100mph past cars waiting at a bus stop and mowing them down at a bus stop (waiting to go to a meeting I was at) on the other side of the road. After Diana’s butler Paul Burrell revealed that she had written him a note saying that there was a plot to tamper with the brakes of her car in the Daily Mirror, over 90% of people in an opinion poll thought that she had been murdered! However, in Diana: Death of a Goddess, David Cohen rules that out as the method of her death.
David came up with a lot of evidence for the most likely explanation of Diana’s death – VX5 nerve gas squirted into driver Henri Paul’s face when the Mercedes entered the Alma Tunnel, to give him blurred vision, so that he would hit a white Fiat Uno driven by James Andanson that was zigzagging slowly in the tunnel. Pieces of the Uno’s tail light were later found in the tunnel. Andanson had links with both the British and French “security services” and the Order of the Solar Temple. Many members of that Order died in suspicious circumstances – including Grace Kelly (Princess Grace of Monaco), who paid $8 million to join but refused to pay an additional £12 million that the Order subsequently demanded from her. She died on a road adjacent to land owned by the Order; it seems that they detonated a device emitting VX nerve gas by remote control so that Grace’s car would crash. Andanson himself later died in suspicious circumstances – supposedly committing suicide by setting fire to himself many miles from anywhere. Diana’s ambulance took an extraordinary length of time to reach a hospital, and someone was paid $540,000 to bump her off.

The only flaw in David’s excellent book is the final chapter, where he suggests that there was a conspiracy but that it didn’t work and he resorts to psychological reasoning (clearly in order to get published). He supposedly rules out the conspiracy succeeding because it couldn’t be modelled (but it, as well as Nathalie and Stuart’s assassination, could be using SDML fully in advance).

Subject: Searching for Galaxia band members in/near Glasgow
revolutionar...
Send Email Send Email

I am moving to Glasgow soon (probably within a week and a half to two weeks, living in Wallace Street in the Gorbals and very near the city centre) in order to get involved in the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP) and form a revolutionary socialist band called Galaxia, named after the very left-wing state of the galaxy at the end of the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov.

It is important that we don't become rich and out-of-touch if the band is successful. Therefore, all proceeds, except for workers' wages (as taken by SSP members of the Scottish parliament) once the band becomes a full-time job, will go to the Galaxia Foundation for the World Socialist Revolution, which will democratically decide how to distribute them. I would like it to primarily fund left-wing parties and campaigns, plus charities (particularly those which campaign as well as alleviate the problems of capitalism). We will also do benefit gigs, and I would like us to do the first ones as benefits for the SSP.

I have written two songs, which you can hear (as recorded before the G8 summit in Gleneagles, Scotland, last year) or read the lyrics of on the Galaxia website (www.galaxiamusic.org) - "Do They Know It's G8 Time?" (to the tune of Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?") and "The Revolution Starts Now!" I would expect band members (including myself) to write additional songs, but we could perform versions of other people's songs as well (perhaps some love songs as well as overtly political ones).

There is a very important deadline of the G8 summit in St Petersburg, from the 15th to the 17th of July this year, and I want us to do some sort of (probably very limited) world tour before that summit in order to promote the idea of a worldwide general strike at that time. Obviously it won't take off everywhere, and perhaps it will not be until next year's G8 summit that mass strike action will become a possibility, but we should at least try.

I have already come across three people who are interested in joining the band, after publicising it on the Scottish Socialist Youth News forum (http://www.ssy.org.uk/Forum), but I would like to give as many people as possible the opportunity to get involved by sending out this message widely and submitting it as an article/letter for the SSP newspaper, the Scottish Socialist Voice. Anybody who is interested can contact me on 07739 904924 or email me at busterblock@... and/or revolutionarysocialiststeve@....

Subject: My emails are being censored
revolutionar...
Send Email Send Email

As I pointed out in my previous message, some of my emails are being treated as spam. Judging from a message I've found on some discussion groups I joined yesterday (including "FreedomOfSpeechNow" - go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FreedomOfSpeechNow/messages/1), textual analysis of emails is used by various email programs to filter out particularly political messages. John Perna, the person who runs that discussion group, asserts that the US "Department of Homeland Security" is responsible.

[He asserts that the word "censorship" is one of the words that can cause a program to filter out a message, so I deliberately didn't use it in my previous message.]

Perna found that some of his messages to discussion groups at Yahoo! are going into his own spam folder. I have noticed the same thing, but strangely when I have sent identical messages going to different collections of groups, some (usually most) are treated as spam and some are not. There may be some randomisation involved, or the headers of emails may be analysed as well as the contents.

It looks as though it is randomisation. I tried sending the third message in Perna's group, on "Who is blocking Dateline from showing an expose' on the FBI?" (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FreedomOfSpeechNow/message/3) between my two email addresses at Yahoo! and Wanadoo (revolutionarysocialiststeve@... and busterblock@... respectively), and it was filtered out when going from Yahoo! to Wanadoo but it got through from Wanadoo to either and from Yahoo! to Yahoo!

Perna is, on the surface at least, a right-wing activist (judging by the contents of some of his messages and the fact that he sometimes calls himself "Patriot"). The discussion group I mentioned is moderated by him; he has to approve all emails that go to it. It seems somewhat hypocritical to set up a moderated group to complain about censorship! He will see this message on other groups he is on, so I might as well send it to his group and test out which side Perna really is on.

This issue illustrates the fact that if the state censors fascists (not that I have any evidence that Perna is one, even if he is genuinely right-wing), it is likely that they will use the same mechanisms/laws to censor the left too.

Perna complains heavily about "CAPCHA" - the use of distorted images of codes consisting of letters and numbers to make it difficult for computer programs to send off huge numbers of emails pretending to be human beings. Those who have been irritated by spam (the most effective spammers I've come across have been those with email addresses of the form [firstname]-[surname][number]@something) may realise that the use of CAPCHA and textual analysis is essential to stop the spammers getting in too strong a position and spam overwhelming other emails to such an extent that email would cease to be a useful tool. What we should object to is political keywords being checked for as well as those used in spam (e.g. those about porn).

Perna claims that he has sometimes found sending an email virtually impossible due to the use of CAPCHA, with it repeatedly and wrongly saying that he has deciphered the code incorrectly. I have never experienced that myself; when I send emails to a lot of addresses my Yahoo! email program asks me to decipher codes a few times and I don't get them wrong frequently enough to be assumed to be a computer. If any left-winger has experienced Perna's problem, then I'd like to hear about it; I think that it is my skill at reading the codes rather than less interesting messages that is saving me...

Incidentally, I don't think the textual analysis involved is limited to searching for keywords. Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques for understanding text in English (or another language) are developed well enough for it to be practicable for programs to use in their filtering mechanisms. AI is one of my areas of expertise in my previous role as a researcher in computer science. [But I haven't done that sort of AI; I designed and implemented an AI/simulation language called SDML - see http://www.socialiststeve.me.uk/sdml.htm.]

I have suspected programs on the internet of reading emails to/from me and deciding whether to let them through for some time, due to suspicious behaviour especially with email addresses I have had located in the USA (e.g. getting no emails of any kind at all for ages and getting lots of spam at other times). If the technology is available, it would be naive to assume that the forces of big business are not using it to frustrate revolutionary socialists.

If you get your emails from me via a discussion group, you may want to switch from reading the messages via email to the web (at http://groups.yahoo.com for those at Yahoo!). Alternatively, check your spam folder frequently. Obviously other people's emails which you would like to read could be affected as well as mine.
