Sealed,

ah, the Kawai R-100 and Korg DS-8 pages are quite interesting! It is
surprising to learn of the R-100 supporting SysEx realtime
modification; quite an accomplishment for a 12-bit drum machine of its
vintage.

The Korg DS-8 was also quite interesting to me, as I once owned a
Yamaha FB-01.

Thank you for posting the update; I'm sure it will be of interest to
Kawai owners.

Regards,
Ben

Hi,

I made a new page for KAWAI R-100, a 12-bit drum machine from mid-80s.

The page includes:

* R-100 Information
* R-100 editor for Emagic SoundDiver
* R-100 sound examples

Please visit my site and tell me what you think.

Hi,

I made a new KAWAI Gmega/K11 page with information, .mp3 sounds and a
new editor for Emagic SoundDiver.
Gmega/K11 is the successor of KAWAI K4 - a PCM synth with linkable multimode
filters and ring modulation.

For details, visit my site.

I am trying to update some stuff, but was testing to see if anyone can get these
patches. Check in the files section of the home page. (LLDK4patch.syx)

They are some edits I did a number of years ago are from a MidiEx sysex filer.
(Old)

I need to update this stuff, but I hope someone can enjoy the patches.

Please let me know if they are able to be read.

Thanks!

Linda

I tried SoundQuests editor. It is easier to use the built in editor on the K5. The editors for the Atari are excellent, and free, and it isn't too much trouble to get an emulator running on your mac or pc. Worth it.

Well, somebody already mentioned SoundDiver's K5 implementation
leaves... a bit to be desired. I know that SoundQuest's "MidiQuest"
has a K5 module, don't know how good it is. There's a lesser-known K5
editor, as well, by Terzoid Software called "NoiZe" for Windows. They
have a free 30-day trial that you can try. I rather liked it; I think
it's got a nicer design, although there are a few tricks to it, they
might have been because my K5's got a v1.0 firmware. Still. Sigh.

Get the Atari Emulator STeeM for the PC & the excellent editor's for the K3
and K5 from Tim's Atari Midi World. Tim also has a link to a Mac ST emulator
with MIDI.

Sign up with the K5Synth group and also the K3Zone Group there's other

I borrowed from a friend Sounddiver 2.0.6 specifically because it lists
the K5 as having an editor as well as the usual librarian featured in
it, don't bother though, it has the librarian alright, but when you
click on a sound it comes up on screen "no editor yet", PAH!

Still haven't found a commercial quality editor for the K5, does anyone
know of one?

It's OK - managed to figure out the magic spot where you assign the
output patches to the single patches that are part of the 'multi'.

I'm trying to hook up my K4R to my 16 channel mixer by using K4R's
"individual out" functionality.

I can seem to assign the output OK when working on Single patches,
but when it comes to maintaining those assignments when those Single
patches are collected into a Multi, I seem to loose all the output
settings.

I do have the manual, but it's a little weak on explaining all
this 'sub mix' stuff and how to *really* do it for a K4R.

Can somebody give me a quick-n-dirty explanation (or provide a link)
to what you need to do get this elusive "each patch within a Multi to
go to it's own output jack" voodoo to work?

Thnx!

Ah, yeah, I guess I sort of assume people are doing the MIDI thing. I
guess it's easy to take for granted.

When you hold the bottom three keys, are you holding just the white
keys or do you include the C#? If the low C key isn't registering,
that could certainly be a problem... That previous owner must have
played hard on the K3, I sort of see mine as indestructable, though I
guess it's getting a little long in tooth these days. :)

Thanks for the suggestions, Ben & Joel. I'm not hooked up via
computer to the K3, funny how people automatically assume that
nowadays, I'm still making music the old fashioned way. I know
it's not resetting because none of the presets are even close to

jboy,

well, you could try transmitting one of SysEx files from Kawai back to
your K3. They have a ZIP file with about 17 SYX files, each containing
a patch bank:

http://www.kawaius.com/downloads/k3.zip

I'm not certain which, if any, of these correspond to the factory
defaults, but it might be:

K3GINT.SYX...

Good Luck,
Ben

jboy,

the "first three keys" method is what I've read, also. The only
additional thing I can think to check would be that the 'MEMORY
PROTECT' switch on the back is set to 'OFF.' You'll know the internal
bank has been reset to factory defaults if 1 is an epiano and ...47?
48? (one of the high numbers) is a 'jet' or 'helicopter' sound.

Good luck!

jboy,

the "first three keys" method is what I've read, also. The only
additional thing I can think to check would be that the 'MEMORY
PROTECT' switch on the back is set to 'OFF.' You'll know the internal
bank has been reset to factory defaults if 1 is an epiano and ...47?
48? (one of the high numbers) is a 'jet' or 'helicopter' sound.

Good luck!

I'm having a bit of a problem resetting my K3 to the factory
sounds. The manual says to hold down 'switches 1,2 &3' while
powering up. I thought that meant the patch number buttons, but that
didn't work. On the K3 group was a post saying to hold down the
first 3 keys, C, C#, & D, but that didn't do it either! Anyone have
any better ideas? I know you're gonna ask 'why the hell do you want
the factory settings back?' I've never heard them, they weren't on
there when I bought the keyboard & I'd like to see how lame they are,
plus I want to program some new sounds & thought I'd start with the
factory settings. Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone on this list have a K5?

There is a group for the K3, and this one for "All Kawai Synths" but
there doesn't seem to be a K5 group on Yahoo, so I have just created
one. Please join!

Hello,

I've finished the first version of a new Kawai K1 editor. It has
line-segment display of the source envelopes along with 'rubber-band'
editing of the display. There is no library section yet, only a K1
editor.

This editor uses a MPU401 card and Windows 98. It was written in
Turbo C and includes all of the source. Turbo C is available for
download from Borland.

Feel free to try, modify, and send feedback.

Alan,

I'm not an expert with the K1-series sysex implementation, but I'm
going to try to help you brainstorm on this problem as best I can. :)
[pulls out K1 sysex implementation chart, which is in the wave list
book (available in the files section for you kids following along at
home)].

Awesome! Perhaps some of us can help beta test it when you have a
first release. :)

Okay. When you send this message, does the K1m's LCD display read
"WRITE COMPLETE" or does it display "WRITE ERROR"?

So, this is the "ONE SINGLE DATA DUMP" message described in section
5-4 of the K1 Sysex implementation chart, right? It's been a while
since I used a computer editor with my K1m (or the K1rII I replaced it
with, for that matter). I seem to recall needed to change patches or
even re-hit the patch or bank number for a recently dumped patch to
take effect. If you issue a program change message that changes to the
program number you just dumped up, do the changes then take effect
with no manual interaction with the k1m's controls?

One theory is that the K1m uses a sort of "active patch" buffer, so
that when you patch change, the parameters are loaded into an "active"
area of K1m RAM, as opposed to being read from the patch bank. When
you upload a new patch, you overwrite that slot in the patch bank but
not the "active buffer".

> Might anyone have any suggestions for making a K1 editor work?

Well, I'm wondering if that "PARAMETER SEND" commands in section 5-3
of the Sysex Implementation chart might allow you to bypass this
problem, at least for "real time" changes when editing. One advantage
is that these messages have a fixed length of... I think it's ten
bytes, instead of the... 107 total bytes sent for a single data dump.
If somebody were sliding a slider in your editor, the extra bytes
might cause a MIDI clog. I suspect the PARAMETER SEND messages don't
overwrite any slots in bank memory, but instead modify only the active
patch. The SINGLE DATA DUMP messages would be sent as a sort of last
step when the user is satisfied with her patch while editing.

Hope this is helpful. :) It's kind of a a case of the blind leading
the blind, I fear.

Regards,
Ben

Hello,

I recently got a Kawai K1M and am currently trying to write an
editor program for it. I use a Music Quest MPU401 interface and Turbo
C language with Windows 98.

   I can send a One_Single_Internal_Voice message with the 86
S_parameters from the PC to the K1M, but the K1M will not update any
of the old parameter values to a new sound unless I press the
Single/I-iE-e button on the actual K1 twice.

I've checked the checksum and I believe that it is correct.

The MIDI message that I'm sending to the K1 is (hex):

    F0 40 00 20 00 03 00 00 .. 86 S_params ... checksum .. F7

for Int A-1 voice as I just want to get something very elementary

working first before expanding to more versatile editor program.

I would be happy to share my source code for anyone who may still be
interested in synth Kawai programming. Turbo C is now free ware from
Borland and easily downloadable.

Might anyone have any suggestions for making a K1 editor work?

Thank you,

Alan Probandt

Okay. I've placed a variety of K1 docs online in the file archive
under K1/ including the K1/K1m and K1-II docs and wavelist docs in PDF
format. Can anyone contribute K3, K4, or K5 PDFs?

Ben

P.S.: If you have any original patch banks you would like to share,
please place them in the file archive and post an announcement here!

As far as Kawai synths go I have curently a K1r, K3m and a K5000s. I
have also owned in the past a K1, a K3 (sold these two and replaced
them with the rackmounts to save space) and a G-MEGA. As I layer
synths alot I don't really use any one of these for any specific
purpose though I do tend to lean towards the k5ks for leads due to
it's relentlessly edgy tone. I tend to couple the k5ks with a
Redsound darkstar alot as I feel they compliment one another well. I
use the k3 with a Korg ex-8000 alot for tones and my k1 gets grouped
along with my yamaha tx81z and a waldorf xtk. The most used vote
goes out to the k1 and k5ks.

Hi,

I like making any sounds with all kawai synths. Not only they have interesting
synthetic functions but also they sound fat.
But I especially like making pads with kawai's ring modulators (K1, K4,
XD-5 and Gmega). Additive waves and K3's real VCF is also great for pads
and bleeps.

I like K5 demo on Chromal's page. I have a K5m, but I too, am wondering
how to synthesize with it. Maybe most users are still on the way to find
how it should be used....
And there's a small module called XS-1. It has no surprising features,
but it can produce some funny digital pads with distortion. I uploaded
XS-1 sounds on my site.

Best,
Sealed

I'm still discovering new ways to use my K-series synths, but let's see..

I like using the K1rII for gritty digital pads, but it shines for a
few other things. It makes a nice unfiltered analog sawtooth lead
sound and a passable nice 88 800 000 registration Hammond organ.

The K3 has some nice epiano sounds, a killer mono sine lead, and some
other pretty cool keyboard sounds. I just read a Sound on Sound
magazine article that suggests it's a really good Hammond tonewheel
organ sound generator, too. I like it for pads, but...

It's my K4r that I consider the killer pad machine. Sweepy skwonky
resonant pads. Oh, and a half-decent quirky edrum set, too. The K4r
does some fun leads, if you're looking for something different than
the analog monosynth sound.

I'm still figuring out what my K5m is good for. Abstract light
electronic sequenced arpeggiation, maybe? Complex sine pads? I haven't
been able to see what other people are doing with theirs because I
haven't found any user patches that Kawai themselves didn't put out...

There's been no one place to handle all K-series synths. There is
specific model coverage for the K3 and K5000 series synths, but that
leaves a lot of products. Rather than support the balkenization of
Kawai owners into model-specific groups, a brand group made sense.

Anyway, I'll be happy to field questions about the K1, K3, K4, and K5
as I own one from each series. I'd love to see docs for each product
appear on the file section in PDF format. Kawai support does some
things well, but they've fallen short in providing PDF format
documentation online...

I'll be happy to promote anyone who can answer questions about other
Kawai/Teisco synths to moderator status.

Regards,
Ben Hauger
