Aloha flhaole, I think I have some answers for you. Netflix has two
DVDs that might interest you. The first is called, "Kumu Hula:
Keepers of the Culture". It is full of ancient hula and chant. This
is what the DVD's description says..."Shot and produced in Hawaii,
this cultural documentary examines the island chain's traditional
dance form, hula. The film begins by exploring the origins of hula,
which date back more than 1500 years to the arrival of the ancient
Hawaiians from Polynesia. It then traces hula's history through the
subsequent years while showing how modern-day hula masters (kumu
hula) preserve its traditions and rituals.
The second is called, "Holo Mai Pele; The Epic Hula Myth." The
description says,....Hawaii's creation myth Holo Mai Pele relates the
epic fable of the sibling rivalry between a volcano goddess and her
younger sister that resulted in the formation of the South Pacific
islands. Hawaiian dance troupe Halau O Kekuhi dramatizes this sacred
myth through a stirring performance of traditional hula and chanting
that was originally broadcast as part of PBS' Dance In America series.
I have seen both and liked them very much. I'm also a big fan of
`oli. The second cd on Keali`i's newly released album is all chant.
You'll like that.
There is bound to be someone on the internet that can help you learn
Hawaiian. I taught myself SAmoan by reading Samoan/English
Dictionaries and phrase books. Boy is it different when speaking
with someone. I just let it be know on the net "Back when the Samoa
Observer had a message board) that I was looking for someone in the
states I could call and practice with. It worked out fine, even
though my pronounciation is still BAD.
You can buy an 8 cd Hawaiian Language course from www.alohajoe.com.
You might be past that already but if you're just beginning it should
help.
