that just for us Carolina girls... Just Kidding... I'm up in

I just posted an article from Hawaii Magazine about Keali'i on the
links page. The article was written before Ke'alaokamaile was
released. For those of you who haven't read it, it said that back in
1994, he was standing on a cliff and was thinking about jumping off of
it because he had broken up with a long-time love. Luckily he didn't
jump off of it; the separation of the two of them was how the
song "Kawaipunahele" got written. To add to all that, I don't think he
has a wife. If you haven't read the article, please do so. Trust me, I
learned a lot of things from it that I probably wouldn't have learned
anywhere else.

Well actually, I don't think he has a wife. For those of you who
haven't read it, I found an online article about him in Hawaii
Magazine that was written in 2000 I believe. Ke'alaokamaile wasn't
released at the time it was written. Anyway, it said that back in
1994, he was standing on a cliff and was thinking about jumping off of
it. Prior to that, he had broken up with a long-time love; that was
why he was thinking about doing it. Luckily he didn't; that was how
the song "Kawaipunahele" got written. If you haven't read it, please

wouldn't have learned anywhere else. I'll post it on the links page.

I myself want to learn Hawaiian but only know a couple things, at
least that's what I think, although someone at the airport in
Kapalua said "you know more Hawaiian than I do" when I said "a'ole
pilikia" as a response to "mahalo." If you do find out how to write
it in Hawaiian, I think you should come up with a tune for it. I
think it sounds just like a mele that Keali'i would compose!

No, I didn't because I didn't know how to translate it. Obviously I
couldn't just go online, find a Hawaiian dictionary, and just look
up everything word for word because forming sentences is not the
same as it is in English. But I did put a couple of words in there
like "ka nohona pili kai." Please note that the song is not to the
tune of "Ka Nohona Pili Kai." It's to "Love Ko To" by Jasmine Trias
(if you know that song.) The ... after it means that you hold that
note longer, so I could have written "kaaaaaaaaaai." (I'm laughing
to myself right now.) Wish I could sing it to all of you right now,
except for melissandimealeta because she already heard me sing it.

Aloha flhaole, I think I have some answers for you. Netflix has two
DVDs that might interest you. The first is called, "Kumu Hula:
Keepers of the Culture". It is full of ancient hula and chant. This
is what the DVD's description says..."Shot and produced in Hawaii,
this cultural documentary examines the island chain's traditional
dance form, hula. The film begins by exploring the origins of hula,
which date back more than 1500 years to the arrival of the ancient
Hawaiians from Polynesia. It then traces hula's history through the
subsequent years while showing how modern-day hula masters (kumu
hula) preserve its traditions and rituals.

The second is called, "Holo Mai Pele; The Epic Hula Myth." The
description says,....Hawaii's creation myth Holo Mai Pele relates the
epic fable of the sibling rivalry between a volcano goddess and her
younger sister that resulted in the formation of the South Pacific
islands. Hawaiian dance troupe Halau O Kekuhi dramatizes this sacred
myth through a stirring performance of traditional hula and chanting
that was originally broadcast as part of PBS' Dance In America series.

I have seen both and liked them very much. I'm also a big fan of
`oli. The second cd on Keali`i's newly released album is all chant.
You'll like that.

There is bound to be someone on the internet that can help you learn

I adore Keali'i's music and mission. I am just beginning to learn
the language. There is a longing in my heart and a tugging at my
spirit to embrace the culture as a whole. His music and mission
keep me going. :)

I have never been able to find much on his personal life...I think
b/c some things are well...personal. :) I can respect that. What I
want to know is if he will ever be coming to the eastern states?!?!

I have also made a friend or two new fans. I have pre-ordered his
collection on amazon.com (YEA!).

I was also wondering (as I am learning all about Hawaiian mele and
oli) any good references to good strong rythmic oli. Lots of drums,
and ipu?! Maybe we can hope he will put out an oli CD someday. He
is amazing!

Also, any good suggestions on distance learning for language? I
have accomplished some unoffical studying on my own, but I must make
it more intense. I need structure! :) HA!

I have changed the group settings. Now you can upload photos and
files. You may upload photos of Keali`i, Keali`i with others,
yourself, or your pet. No cartoons PLEASE.

If you know of a god article on the net post a link. If you have a
short piece of info the upload it as a file. I don't know the rule on
music files so I guess we can. Maybe someone out there knows.

Do me a favor and keep photos and files to the point.

Here are the lyrics to my version of that song I recorded if you are
wondering how it goes:

Verse 1:
I've sung about us educating them
Ever since I learned to talk
I see smiles while my chant
Lifts spirits and moves the soul

Bridge:
And now a chance to be among Hawaiians who share my passion
To have a thousand people
To talk to, to not say "I can't"
To share my love and sing my chant

Chorus:
Here we are, my audience and me
Hear me now, finally I'm free
This stage and I, we're in love today
I'm singing my song
Ba ba da ba ba, aloha e

Verse 2:
There may be a lot of things that I love in life,
But most of all it's my family
And no matter how my hula hips sway,
By my side is where they'll always stay

Bridge:
And now a chance to be among Hawaiians who share my passion
To have a thousand people
To talk to, to not say "I can't"
To share my love and sing my chant

Chorus:
Here we are, my audience and me
Hear me now, finally I'm free
This stage and I, we're in love today
I'm singing my song
Ba ba da ba ba, aloha e

Aloha no
Ka nohona pili kai...

Go one note higher:
Here we are, my audience and me
Hear me now, finally I'm free
This stage and I, we're in love today
I'm singing my song
Ba ba da ba ba
I'm singing my song
Ba ba da ba ba
I'm singing my, I'm singing my song
Aloha e

The reason I recorded the song is because I thought it really
described Keali'i. Hope you like it as well.

Aloha! Thank you for having this group available. This man really
inspires me and keeps me connected with a culture that I am learning
and have been facinated with for a very long time.

I live in FL and am a psychology student. In fact, I have chosen the
Hawai'ian culture and the psychological aspects of their tradtions to
study for my Independent Study.

Know if he ever gets out this way for concerts?!?!

hula
b. slow, relaxing Hawaiian language mele
c. chants
d. contemporary, mostly English

2. Relationships?

b. I've broken up with a long-time love.
c. I hang out with my own gender more than the other.

3. If you were going to listen to someone other than Keali`i
Reichel, who would it be?
a. Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo`ole
b. The Brothers Cazimero
c. other genres or artists (If so, who?)

4. Pick the Keali`i Reichel song lyrics that describe you the most.
a. Nou e kawaipunahele...
b. Aloha e, aloha no...
c. He ohu i ka lei hali`a...
d. other songs (If so, which ones?)

5. How was this quiz?
a. It was very easy.
b. It was easy.
c. It was medium.
d. It was hard.
e. It was very hard.

Have fun taking it!

P.S. Some of you may be wondering what the relationship question has
to do with anything, but if you said that your favorite type of
Hawaiian music was slow, relaxing Hawaiian language mele and you've
broken up with a long-time love, "Kawaipunahele" would most likely
be your song.

About that chant I was talking about, I emailed Aloha Joe a while ago
and heard that it was by Sonny Ching. I looked at his CD, but it
didn't seem to have that particular chant on it. I don't think it
sounds like him, but maybe it is. I'll have to keep looking.

Hi Alex.
I'm going to edit this because there were a lot of paragraph marks showing and
your message was mixed in with mine.

As I said in my email to you, it sounds like the concert was a
blast! I wish I could have been there. Like you, I hope the people
at Punahele like all the stuff you sent them.

Speaking of sending things to them, I sent Keali'i a tape of me
singing some songs that I changed the words to a while ago, not for
recording, just for listening pleasure; if he recorded them it would
count as copying someone else's work. I haven't heard from them
since, but I'm sure they liked it. The song was "Aloha E" instead
of "Love Koto" (if you know that song.) Wish I could sing it right
now.

I'll let you know if I find out what that chant is that I was
talking about before

It was awsome watching Keali`i Reichel on stage on September 11th. I
yelled and screamed a lot, but not enough because I could still talk
the next day. He danced a lively hula and sang a couple new songs. We
discovered we were sitting directly behind Puakea Nogelmeier when he
got up a dance a hula to another of Keali`i's songs. That was almost
as exciting as seeing Keali`i.

Na Leo Pilimihana performed first. They did an excellent job as well.
I told Aloha Joe he gave me and good education in Hawaiian music. I
knew all the songs that sang except the ones coming out on thier new
album. I tried hard not to sing along but when they sang "Friends" I
gave up and sang along.

I had tried but was unable to get back stage tickets to meet Keali`i in
person. I got him an "Aloha Joe" t-shirt as a gift because I got to
know his music by listening to aloha joe. Los Angeles was cool that
weekend. I ended up letting my daughter wear my sweater so I opened
the t-shirt I had for Keali`i. I told myself I was wearing his shirt.

I had planned to send the people at Punahele Productions some of my
candles for Christmas but I sent them early. I went ahead and mailed
Keali`i his t-shirt along with some candles. I hope they like
them.

I'm trying to figure out who sings this chant. It might be Keali'i but
I'm not sure. If it is it isn't on any of his CD's. I heard it on The
Breeze of Hawai`i. It starts out like an oli, and then the drums come
in and it goes something like:

Nu'u ka ko i ke kai,
Na naha ka ko o ke kamaleheola
O ke ko hola e

(then all that repeats; then all the other verses repeat)

Those may not be the right lyrics, but that's the gist of it. Does
anyone recall it? If so, please let me know what it is and who sings
it. Mahalo.

recognize it at all, could you please let me know what it is and who
sings it? If not, please give me some tips for finding it myself.
Mahalo.

Take a look at the Keali`i Reichel website. It has been updated and
reflects his love of hula.
