sweet!!! finally! some activity on kenyapunk! i'm happy to see that
someone is getting some initiative to organize shows. i'm really
disappointed that the wiyathi collective fizzled out because we had a
really good framework for setting up good independent rock shows that
were fun as hell and where there were no holds barred on creativity.
as for xfm only having indian or non-african presenters, i gotta say,
thats fucked up. why are we, as a society, still holding on to that
eurocentric colonialist ideal? nairobi is such a diverse place, our
music, our fashions, our food, our language, our media and everything
else about our culture shows it! so why is xfm being stuck up and
still holding to that idiotic notion that rock music is for white
people so all the presenters had to go to hillcrest, braeburn, st
andrews, ISK, etc? fuck that. the reality is that the nairobi rock
scene is just a reflection of the people that live in nairobi,
whether black, white, brown, yellow, red or blue! i love nairobi
because its more diverse than new york city. whats more, i haven't
heard of any of these presenters in relation to the rock scene.
maybe thats because i haven't been around for a while ... but
seriously. well i guess we can only hope it improves... or if anyone
is angry enough about it... DO SOMETHING.
start your own goddamn radio, start a pirate radio station and play
what you know the real kenyan rockers want to hear. we want to hear
some heavy shit, some underground shit, we want to hear our own
goddamn music played on the radio. but hey, thats never gonna
happen.
fuck xfm, in my opinion, they are the same as everyone else. if you
want to hear good music, go to this show at rosslyn. make music
yourself, make it how you want it to sound. who cares whether it gets
played on the radio. we make music for us and for people who like
it... and fuck you if you don't.
yeah, i'm still punk, and i still hate to see people trying to sell
out what we worked so hard to build. keep kenyapunk corporate-free,
keep it DIY as fuck, and keep doing what WE want and not what THEY
want. this music is ours, not theirs!
ok, i think i'm done.
oh one more thing, everyone should watch this, its about the american
hardcore scene and how it started, it reminds me of the beginning of
the nairobi scene a few years ago:

anyway, i love you guys and hope everything there is good.
