I took the war to the Nation's back yard. Here's an Email sent  to the newsdesk with exerpts from Emails and rants done on this mailing list. Uhmm, I hope whoever's lines and text I put in this Email will not be mad for plagiarism.

Subject: Zuqka article - Between rock and a hard place

Yesterday's article in the Nation in regards to the rock culture in Kenya was totally uncalled for. It was out of context and very shallow, totally un-researched, prejudiced and more of a typical stereotype's view of the rock culture. I am one dedicated rock head and make attempts to attend all major rock events including the monthly Battle of The bands at Rezorus. Never have I ever seen or experienced any of the issues brought about in the article. The bands in the scene are just in it for the music, not weird fantasies like orgies and church burnings.

Why any writer worth their salt would try to make a connection to Varg Vikernes and rock in Kenya is beyond me. Varg was a murderous talent-less neo-Nazi racist. He sent a mail bomb all the way from Norway to Israel targeting Zeev Tananboim from the band rock band "Salem" just because they were Jews making positive extreme metal. What a douche-bag!

Talking of drinking blood and eating ship brains is just way out of context and exits in some people's fantasies. Is the writer a sheep's rights activists by any chance?

Whatever the kind of (bad) publicity that he article intended to achieve however had a positive effect. the rants against the article have generated allot of activity in the rock scene's online circles. Rock.co.ke managed to get 1000 new hits and 400 new members in one day. Those who did not know about the Battle Of The Bands will definitely attend the event in addition to those who will want to confirm the veracity of the article. Calling the Kenyan rock scene "unacceptable, deplorable and evil" is just plain ignorant and insulting. Steve Ochieng has definitely never been to a rock party going by the way he was quoted but all the same, he needs to get his facts straight. he had his 15 minutes of lame fame all the same!

Taking names of bands at face value is also rather shallow. The writers clearly know nothing about rock. The mention about a Christian band called Demon Hunters in bad light is even more proof as to the writer's level of ignorance. A demon hunter would be definitely someone who would be hunting out demons with the aim of slowing their activities. How one can manage to twist English words which are so obvious in meaning to a point where they are put in a context that means exactly the opposite is really interesting. This is the same way the media manages to brainwash the public.

Tripe like that shouldn't be peddled around like it's worth anything.

Regards,
P. Maina
