any quality microphone with a flat response that is good for vocals will work well for overtones. large diaphragm condenser mics usually fall in that category....

Agreed! For live sound, the SM-58, well, rulez ;-) Condensers will pick up way too much. And you can beat noisy fans to death with them, they will still work...
