Dear Cedric,
They are the same . I could talk to the collectors but they told me that they
did not remember exactly . Any how , it is good to know that overtone singing is
practised by one population in New Guinea .

You probably don't remember but we met once
in Paris and you gave me an audio CD with
some samples, some of them being Dani's sound.
Are these different samples? The one you gave
me were from french ethnologists or something
if I remember well (they made a CD of their trip).
By the way, are you in contact with them?
Maybe they could tell us if Dani's people sing with or
without external devices close to their mouth...
Thanks for sharing your knowledge,
take care,
Cedric.

About Concert Performances...
I found out that Tyva Kyzy "Daughters of Tuva" performed at the Chicago Cultural
Center not that long ago on US Tour.
If I was still in Chicago I would have liked to have seen this performance.
But I happen to be in Tennessee at the moment.
It would be quite rare if there would ever be a Khoomei performance here.
Or a workshop for me to learn Khoomei better and have a better understanding of
it.
Hoping,

How are you my Khoomeigie brothers and sisters! My name's Soriah and I'm a
throat singer from Portland,
Oregon and third place winner in the International Khoomei Symposium in Kyzyl,

the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood on the 19th. I hope you will

Thank you for bringing this to my attention about handle side being thicker.
When first watching video I couldn¢t tell. I thought it was just one card.
Now when watching video I did happen to notice the extra piece of card by handle
area.
I added this part to the part of the Jew¢s Harp card that I made earlier and it
has improved the sound, volume and it boings easier now as well. Sounds like
the one on the video now.. To attach extra plastic card piece I used super glue
gel.
Thanks once again.

The part we couldn't figure out is that it looks like the part where
you
hold the card has extra thickness of card. Was that just glued in place
or what? I should pester somebody who knows French and see if a
translation helps.

perhaps some sort of workshop or lesson can be arranged.
i know Alash Ensemble is about to start their next
US tour and they often do workshops and lessons.
This group and the khoomei.com forum
are both active and both great resources
for folks learning various types of throatsinging.
this group tends to focus more on the
traditional Central Asian music forms,
the khoomei.com forum is a bit more all encompassing.
i don't anything about the New Guinea styles.

Hello all -
I've been doing some variation of kargyraa for some years now, and
I've recently begun to hear that I haven't quite got the technique
down yet. I think the main problem for me is that I'm using my false
vocal chords for the guttural sounds. So now not only do I have to
figure out the right technique, I also have to unlearn bad habits...
any advice?
Brian, I checked out you audio workshops, and they confirmed for me
that I'm doing it wrong, but I can't see the way forward.
Is it time for another workshop for me :) ?

That was probably my fault. I've been approving your posts. We have
the group set to moderate for first-time members as a spammer

first post show up. I've changed your group membership settings so

you can also play almost anything
in the manner of a jew's harp.
a section of a paper or styro cup
can be held in such a way as to
resonate enough to get some decent
staccato tones from it.
so experiment around.
if i remember my Danmoi correctly.
the 'tip' end is about 1/3 of the
way in and the 'base' starts in
about 1/4 of the way on the other
side. you hold the remaining 1/3
beyond the tip and pluck on the
base end. the 'tongue' takes up
about 1/2 the width (a 1/4 of the
way in from each edge). there should
only be enough space at the cut for
the tongue to move freely, to large
a gap will adversely affect the tone.
have fun.

festival combining didge, khoomei and jew's harp which takes place in mid July.
I was the guest of this festival some years ago .

sale.
Oh, I forgot to mention, it is signed by Huun Huur Tu. They seemed to
think it was a very nice instrument, or so I gathered when they
stopped eating their dinner to each play it.
I have a nice semi-rigid banjo case and two bows, one viola and one

Much Appreciated.
I really now have a much better understanding of how Sygyt is achieved.
Even though I really do like the sound of Sygyt a whole lot and would like to
add it to the music that I do, I¢ll try not to become too impatient while trying
to learn it and stick with practicing on getting a really strong Khoomei voice
for right now.
Thank you very much for the information though.
Very Helpful.
Give Thanks,

IIRC, you don't really cup your tongue for sygyt. Take the tip of
your
tongue and put it up against the roof of your mouth, just behind your
teeth. You can do this other ways but just try this for now. OK, now
sort of push so that your tongue flattens out along the roof of your
mouth, so your tongue will sort of slant up to where it hits the roof of
your mouth. Then it will be flat from one side of your mouth to the
other. Try to breathe, notice you can't because, well, your tongue's
blocking the air from coming out of your mouth. Now here's the tricky
part. Unflatten your tongue slightly so that you have a small hole.
This can be in the center, which is easiest, but preferrably you want to
get it on one side or the other, by your teeth along the side of the
roof of your mouth. Now if you breathe in and out of your mouth you'll
make a whacky hissing noise, yay! Once you have said whacky hissing
noise, ry sygyt.
It's still hard, yeah. Sygyt is tricky. And this doesn't even get into
anything about how to make the sound better. Good luck because I'm
working on that myself, heh! Once you get this down you can experiment
with things that come right out of a phonology lecture, like a
retroflexed tongue, doesn't that sound fun? Tuvans don't do that one
much IIRC, but it's fairly popular in Mongolia, from what I'm led to
understand.
Hope that helps. Let the corrections begin! :)

I received more of an interest in that of Jew's Harp after hearing Sean P. Quirk
and others of Alash Ensemble play them.
The "Phone Card" Jew's Harp is designed after the Vietnamese Dan Moi Jew's Harp.
I don't happen to have a Dan Moi as of yet, So the Jew's Harp I made was just
from me eyeballing the videos trying to get the measurements right. When making
Jew's Harp any plastic card will do. Phone Card, Credit Card, Gift Card, etc. As
long as the card flexes well and snaps back to its original shape it should be
fine. The measurements for the first Jew's Harp I made is 3/4 wide and 3 3/8 in
length. The normal length for US card. As far as the V cut for the middle of the
card, I'm still trying to figure out the measurements for that. The card Jew's
Harp I made still has an okay boing to it though.
If Tran Quang Hai could
give us the measurements of his card Jew's Harp it would be most appreciated...

So how *do* you make a phone card jew's harp? Does it have to be a
phone card, can you use an old credit card or such? I got my fiance,
who can actually see, to look at the video and I get the idea, kind of,
but if anybody happens to have a set of instructions laying around they
can share, I'd really appreciate it. I'm terrible at figuring these
things out myself, heh. But I really want to make one.
