Greetings from Butterfly Land,

As I sit here composing this email, I am looking out my window into my butterfly garden. All I can say is that these beautiful plants really do their job. Our butterfly bush, purple cone flowers, rubeckia, verbena and other vibrant & colorful plants must look and taste wonderful to all these winged creatures . . . oh! There's another hummingbird!

I have just returned from visiting my folks in Surfside Beach, SC, and we had such a fantastic time. Our visit included a trip to Medieval Times, and my daughter Casey was picked as the Queen of Love & Beauty by the Black & White Knight. She got such a kick out of that! If you get a chance, you may want to take your family and/or friends there for a trip to the past. If you are interested in staying in a beautiful condo in the Myrtle beach area, without the mess of being in Myrtle Beach, let me know, and I will tell you about a great condo I know for rent there. Ocean forint, and has a pool. very family oriented as well.

Yes, between traveling to the UK and the beach, I have been taking a bit of time away from performing to spend with my family, but it is time to get back to making some music. This weekend I am traveling again with my identical twin from DC, Rachel Cross. Our time together in Florida was so much fun, I am sure this will be a repeat of that. Although these shows are limited to the Carolinas this time, please keep an eye out for future performances in other areas. Here's what we have in store this week...

Mosquitoes . . .

Are you bothered by these pesky insects? Dragonflies are great aides in helping rid your area of them, so do what you can to attract them, and limit use of pesticides.  Here are some other great ideas I have received from friends and fans. . .

  • Here is a good advise for the summer, for those who like to sit and enjoy the outdoors, but don't like those pesky mosquitoes.   PUT some water in a white dinner plate and add just a couple of drops of Lemon Fresh Joy dishwashing soap.  Set the dish on a porch or patio.  Not sure what attracts them, the lemon smell, the white color, or what, but mosquitoes flock to it, and drop dead, or fall into the water, or on the floor within about 10 ft.  Works just super!
  • OK, mosquitoes...prepare to be repelled!
Use Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets...Best thing ever used in Louisiana..just wipe on & go...Great for Babies
  • Bob, a fisherman, takes one vitamin B-1 tablet a day April through October. He said it works. He was right. Hasn't had a mosquito bite in 33 years. Try it. Every one he has talked into trying it works on them.Vitamin B-1( Thiamine Hydrochloride 100 mg.)
  • If you eat bananas, the mosquitoes like you -- something about the banana oil as your body processes it.
Stop eating bananas for the summer and the mosquitoes will be much less interested.
  • This is going to floor you, but one of the best insect repellents someone (who is in the woods every day) found, is Vick's Vaporub.
  • Plant marigolds around the yard, the flowers give off a smell that bugs do not like, so plant some in that garden also to help ward off bugs without using insecticides.
  • "Tough guy" Marines who spend a great deal of time "camping out" say that the very best mosquito
repellant you can use is Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil mixed about half and half with alcohol.
  • One of the best natural insect repellants is made from the clear real vanilla. This is the pure
vanilla that is sold in Mexico. It works great for mosquitoes and ticks, don't know about other insects.

when all else fails -- get a frog

Pass this on to anyone who likes being out in the evening or is having a cook out. Enjoy the mosquito free summer.

Now, since coming back from the UK, this sounds fantastic!

Here are some words about my CD, Illusions:

"...Buchanan has delivered a musical package that beams with soul and sensitivity. Her songwriting is smooth and fluid, with lyrics fitting the cosmic, haunting and stormy backgrounds created by equally fine musicians... The production quality is exceptional and is best appreciated with headphones on."
Singer Magazine

"...Kim Buchanan ... is already causing a buzz up and down the east coast with her dreamy, trippy take on folk music. Her second CD, Illusions, is folk rock with a psychedelic edge and a soothing, meditative effect on the emotions"
Indie-Music.com

"Kim Buchanan gets high praise for her blend of pop, folk and jazz . . . Buchanan showcases her mellow alto on a tasteful collection of tunes"
ESP Magazine
