Subject: Jamie Purnell: Special Performance
Most Esteemed Music Lovers:
Jamie Purnell, your friendly neighborhood singer-songwriter, here. I hope all of you are enjoying the crisp, clear wonder of Autumn! Before we get the rush of the Holidays, I want to tell about a special performance I am going to be a part of this Friday at NOSH Restaurant.
Kim Buchanan is a big-leaguer, folks. She has toured across the country, and played all kinds of clubs and festivals, including the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage. She is a wonderful writer and excellent performer, spell-binding audiences with ease.
The Miami Herald says:
" Buchanan... creates a mesmerizing aura with powerful yet restrained vocals over exotic-sounding music. While her original tunes are solid, her cover songs truly shine: You'd swear it was Grace Slick belting out White Rabbit, while Buchanan's take on The Beatles' While My Guitar Gently Weeps brings a motherly touch to the song's mournful message. "
Kim also happens to be my friend, and she has agreed to perform with me this Friday! Here are the details:
Kim Buchanan and Jamie Purnell
Friday, November 16th, 7PM - 9PM
NOSH Restaurant
2812 Erwin Rd.
Durham, NC
I hope to see you there!

Yep, this is indeed Kim Buchanan with music announcements after a couple years of silence. . . and those who know me well, know that's a difficult task to silence me!
UPCOMING SHOWS: Rachel Cross (my identical twin separated by different parents and reality) and I will be doing a tiny tour in NC next weekend. Here are the details:
~~~~~~~~~ On a Sad Note This week the Triangle area lost a very wonderful musician, and a someone who I call my friend and had the privilege to play with for a couple years. Greg Taylor died of complications from his treatment for Leukemia. To say the least, we are all shocked and stunned by this loss. Many of you probably saw us perform together. When I first started performing as a songwriter, Greg was instrumental in aiding in my performance, confidence and style. I know I am a better musician and performer for having had this opportunity. Thank you Greg, you will be missed, but always in our hearts!
~~~~~~~~ More News About Plastics I seem to hear almost daily about the hazards of plastics. Here is some light reading about some precautions you can use when when choosing plastic products.
I found this info at http://www.coopamerica.org/pubs/realmoney/articles/plastics.cfm "When you do use plastic, it's best to choose those labeled #1, #2, #4, and #5 and avoid those labeled #3, #6, and #7. Even if you're choosing the best plastic, though, there are still chemical leaching concerns associated with long storage or heat. The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy has issued a "Smart Plastics Guide" that includes the following recommendations for using any type of plastic:
* Avoid using plastic containers in the microwave. Instead, use glass or ceramic containers free of metallic paint. * Beware of cling wraps, especially for microwave use. * Avoid plastic bottled water, if possible. * If you do use plastic water bottles, take precautions. If you use a polycarbonate water bottle, to reduce leaching of BPA, do not use for warm or hot liquids, and discard old or scratched water bottles. Water bottles from #1 or #2 plastics are recommended for single use only. For all types of plastic, you can reduce bacterial contamination by thoroughly washing daily. However, avoid using harsh detergents that can break down the plastic and increase chemical leaching.
Take Care With Kids: The rapid development and immature immune systems of fetuses and children make them particularly susceptible to damage from toxins, so pregnant women and parents should exercise extra caution with plastics. The Children's Health Environmental Coalition (CHEC) advises choosing cloth and wooden toys and avoiding plastic toys, which are often made of PVC and can leach harmful chemicals when chewed on. Or, consult Greenpeace's Toy Report Card to learn which toy manufacturers have eliminated PVC from their products."

One Proud Mama!
On a parental note, I'm proud to announce that daughter Casey, just
got accepted to attend the NC School of Science and Math. This is an
incredible opportunity, and very difficult to get into. She will be
leaving home two years early, which saddens me, BUT her school will
only me minutes from my new job. No way do they get to escape me that
easily! If you would like to learn more about this school, check it
out at www.ncssm.edu

Job Description - Parent
This is hysterical. If it had been presented this way, none of us
would have done it!!!!
POSITION :
Mom, Mommy, Mama, Ma
Dad, Daddy, Dada, Pa
JOB DESCRIPTION :
Long term, team players needed, for challenging permanent work in an,
often chaotic environment. Candidates must possess excellent
communication and organizational skills and be willing to work
variable hours, which will include evenings and weekends and frequent
24 hour shifts on call. Some overnight travel required, including
trips to primitive camping sites on rainy weekends and endless sports
tournaments in far away cities! Travel expenses not reimbursed.
Extensive courier duties also required! .
RESPONSIBILITIES :
The rest of your life. Must be willing to be hated, at least
temporarily, until someone needs $5. Must be willing to bite tongue
repeatedly. Also, must possess the physical stamina of a pack mule
and be able to go from zero to 60 mph in three seconds flat in case,
this time, the screams from the backyard are not someone just crying
wolf. Must be willing to face stimulating technical challenges, such
as small gadget repair, mysteriously sluggish toilets and stuck
zippers. Must screen phone calls, maintain calendars and coordinate
production of multiple homework projects. Must have ability to plan
and organize social gatherings for clients of all ages and mental
outlooks. Must be willing to be indispensable one minute, an
embarrassment the next. Must handle assembly and product safety
testing of a half million cheap, plastic toys, and battery operated
devices. Must always hope for the best but be prepared for the worst.
Must assume final, complete accountability for the quality of the end
product! Responsibilities also include floor maintenance and
janitorial work throughout the facility.
POSSIBILITY FOR ADVANCEMENT & PROMOTION :
None. Your job is to remain in the same position for years, without
complaining, constantly retraining and updating your skills, so that
those in your charge can ultimately surpass you!
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE :
None required unfortunately. On-the-job training offered on a
continually exhausting basis.
WAGES AND COMPENSATION :
Get this! You pay them! Offering frequent raises and bonuses. A
balloon payment is due when they turn 18 because of the assumption
that college will help them become financially independent. When you
die, you give them whatever is left. The oddest thing about this
reverse-salary scheme is that you actually enjoy it and wish you
could only do more.
BENEFITS :
While no health or dental insurance, no pension, no tuition
reimbursement, no paid holidays and no stock opt ions are offered;
this job supplies limitless opportunities for personal growth and
free hugs for life if you play your cards right.

Hre is something I thought was interesting:
Flower Power Gadget Turns Plants Into Amplifiers
This in from Tokyo - People who like talking to their plants can now
enjoy a musical accompaniment, thanks to a Japanese invention that
turns petals and leaves into amplifiers.
Called the "Flower Speaker Amplifiers," the gadget made by Let's Corp
is hidden in a vase or a potted plant and sends music at just the
right frequency to vibrate up the stems and then be converted into
audible sound by the plant as a whole.
A device such as a CD player or radio can be connected to it.
"Anywhere where you would want music naturally integrated with a
natural surrounding," said Hirohiko Okugawa, a manager at Let's,
referring to locations for the device, which he expects it to be
popular for hotels and hospital lobbies.
The inventor of the gadget, Keiji Koga, said: "We are finally able to
experience plants and flowers with all five of our natural senses."
The firm expects to begin selling the speakers by mid-August for
5,000 yen ($46) to 50,000 yen depending on the plant's size. And
according to Koga, music is also good for the plants, which are
invigorated by the constant musical vibes.

I apologize for the lapse in my mailings. I have been multi-tasking like all good Geminis should. I can't believe that my kids started back to school today. Sure seems like they are starting back too soon to me. I think NC is going to push hard to have schools begin closer to Labor Day next year. I think the resorts as well as the kids will be happy with that decision.
I am excited to be playing here, and especially to be sharing the stage with Wishing Chair. They are such incredibly talented musicians, and their music really speaks for and to so many of us. I will be going on at 8:00, and I hope you can make it out.

ART SHOW:
As many of you know, my husband, George Buchanan is a wonderful artist, ( www.georgebuchanan.com ) and I am always proud to show his work. In fact he has designed both covers of my CDs, and in Illusions, I also feature many other works throughout the booklet. I am pleased to share with you this local show, and will keep you posted of future shows as well.

The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an animal in need" for free! This doesn't cost you a thing! Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising. Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know!
( It should be on about 13 more locations very soon. If you see it available for download somewhere, please let me know, so I can share it with others )
I don't know if this is true, but this email floating around may have given folks a new idea. Anyway, wanted to pass it on to you for your safety!
BE AWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED. You walk across the parking lot, unlock your car and get inside. Then you lock all your doors, start the engine and shift into REVERSE, and you look into the rear-view mirror to back out of your parking space and you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window. So, you shift into PARK, unlock your doors and jump out of your car to remove that paper (or whatever it is) that is obstructing your view. When you reach the back of your car, that is when the car-jackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off !! Your engine was running, (ladies would have their purse in the car) and they practically mow you down as they speed off in your car. Just drive away and remove the paper that is stuck to your window later.
Never hurts to be safe!

Beauty Tips. . . .
For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands; one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.
***Audrey Hepburn wrote this when she was asked to share her "beauty tips." It was read at her funeral years later. ***

I want to close with this quote provided by Scott Ainslie's new bumper stickers.
"More hideous crimes have been committed in the name of obedience than have ever been committed in the name of rebellion." C.P. Snow, 1961
We need to stand up and be heard. That is what our forefathers, and all the veterans of this wonderful country have fought for. It is not un-patriotic to stand up for what you believe in, even if that is speaking to the need for a new administration. Please VOTE your heart and mind, and be mindful of our - and our kid's - futures!
I thank you for your time, your support and your love of music !
I hope this day has been a relaxing day, and one in which you feel validated that you are loved, and a vital person in our lives and world. If you haven't felt that yet, my hope is that you can embrace it, not just today, but EVERYDAY !!!!
I received this little history lesson about valentines day. . . .
Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious Saint Valentine?
The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition.
One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
Interesting, huh?!?!

~~~~~~~~
I am heading to the DC area this weekend, and here are the places you can come for some soul enriching times.
Many phrases we use every day come for the life of people living in the 1500s
Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.
Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children-last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, Don't throw the baby out with the bath water." ( YUCK! ! !)
Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the dogs, cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying "It's raining cats and dogs."
There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. that posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could really mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence. The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying "dirt poor."
The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on the floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they kept adding more thresh until when you opened the door it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entranceway. Hence the saying a "thresh hold."
In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes the stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme, "Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old."
Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man "could bring home the bacon". They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and "chew the fat."
Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning and death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.
Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or "upper crust."
Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock them out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a "wake."
England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house" and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they thought they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the "graveyard shift") to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be "saved by the bell" or was considered a "dead ringer."
So. . . now you know!
I know I just sent out my newsletter, and I don't want to over-burden you with emails, but I am writing with great news, excitement and to let you know I am seeking sponsors.
As many of you remember, I had to say good bye to Michael Hsu - the wonderful violinist I had the honor to perform with - just after the ILLUSIONS CD Release party. We lost Michael to Seattle, Washington where he started his medical internship ( after graduating from Duke Med School ) I recently heard from Michael and he had some wonderful news.
On March 13th, I will be in Seattle, attending the world premiere of a piece Michael wrote for full symphonic orchestra. It's called "Synchronicity", and the orchestra that he's been playing with (Puget Sound Symphony Orchestra) is performing it.
I am so incredibly proud of his accomplishments, and honored that he has invited me to come and be a part of it.
However, since this is not a "working trip", in order to do this, I am looking for a few supporters to help sponsor my trip.
Here are some words about my CD, Illusions: " Buchanan... creates a mesmerizing aura with powerful yet restrained vocals over exotic-sounding music (the violin and flute complement her acoustic guitar nicely). While her original tunes are solid, her cover songs truly shine . . ." The Miami Herald
"...Buchanan has delivered a musical package that beams with soul and sensitivity. Her songwriting is smooth and fluid, with lyrics fitting the cosmic, haunting and stormy backgrounds created by equally fine musicians... The production quality is exceptional and is best appreciated with headphones on." Singer Magazine
"...Kim Buchanan ... is already causing a buzz up and down the east coast with her dreamy, trippy take on folk music. Her second CD, Illusions, is folk rock with a psychedelic edge and a soothing, meditative effect on the emotions" Indie-Music.com
"Kim Buchanan gets high praise for her blend of pop, folk and jazz . . . " ESP Mag
I hope you have survived the flus and holiday blues, the over-eating, and the meet and greeting.
It is amazing to me that another year has passed, and we begin another. One with new hopes, dreams, concerns, and hurdles to overcome. And yet, as much as things change from year to year, it is incredible to me how some things never change. Like when you least expect it, a message can come to us from out of the blue. . . or should I say tree.
This holiday, I got the sublet reminder that we are all stars, and have the ability to shine in so many ways. This was a gift from my green son, Oscar ( the Iguana), as you can see from this picture. Yes, he actually climbed to the top of the tree and stood on top of the star, taking its place. It was his turn to shine.
You Are A Star
( Kim Buchanan 2004)
Believe it or not, you're a bright, brilliant star,
I had such a wonderful response to my last online special for Illusions, that I thought I would offer it again to start the year off with a BANG! For more info, go to http://www.kimbuchanan.com/illusions.htm
I have received several emails, and have been informed by others that these scams are prolific and a real threat. If you receive an email from anyone you have an online account -with, including banks, Ebay, paypal, internet service providers, and so forth - and they request you to go and update your info, and ask for your account numbers, please call the company to give them this info directly. You will more than likely find that there is NO problem with your account and someone was trying to steal your info. VERY SCARY.
The Crooks in the world are getting slicker and sneaker, and so we have to stay one step ahead, or at least, keep our heads, and our personal information very safe.
Improve your communication skills this year ( humor )
While attending a marriage seminar on communication, Tom and his wife Peg listened to the instructor declare, "It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other."
He addressed the men, "Can you describe your wife's favorite flower ?"
Tom leaned over, touched his wife's arm gently, and whispered, "Pillsbury All-Purpose, isn't it?"
The rest of the story is not pleasant.
As I close this email, I want to share with you a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson, I just received from Robert Seiler ( from the Purple Onion in Saluda NC). I do think this is an excellent way to approach the new year. . . and beyond.
“The purpose of life is not to be happy.It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and live well."
May your 2004 be all this and more. I look forward to seeing you and sharing with you this year. Thanks for your encouragement, support and for following your dreams as well!
I hope you are all doing well. I have been learning so much as a science substitute teacher the last couple of weeks, We have been studying the oceans, and tides and the moon phases and its effect on the tides, and we were talking about eclipses. the partial eclipse starts at 6:35 pm
the total phase begins at 8:10
MAX eclipse if at 8:20
end of total phase at 8:31
Now, for some great humor. . . .
A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgery. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird's chest. After a moment or two, the vet shook his head sadly and said, "I'm so sorry, Cuddles has passed away."
The distressed owner wailed, "Are you sure?"
"Yes, I am sure. The duck is dead," he replied.
"How can you be so sure," she protested. "I mean, you haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something."
The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room, and returned a few moments later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck's owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head. The vet patted the dog and took it out, and returned a few moments later with a beautiful cat.
The cat jumped up on the table and also sniffed delicately at the bird. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room.
The vet looked at the woman and said, "I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck." Then the vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill which he handed to the woman. The duck's owner, still in shock, took the bill.
"$150!" she cried. "$150 just to tell me my duck is dead?!!"
The vet shrugged. "I'm sorry. If you'd taken my word for it, the bill would have been $20, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan ..." ~~~~~~~
Guess What Sex these are. . .
ZIPLOC BAGS - male, because they hold everything in, but you can always see right through them.
SHOE - male, because it is usually unpolished, with its tongue hanging out.
COPIER - female, because once turned off, it takes a while to warm up.
TIRE - male, because it goes bald and often is over inflated.
HOT AIR BALLOON - male, because to get it to go anywhere you have to light a fire under it ..... and, of course, there's the hot air part.
SPONGES - female, because they are soft and squeezable and retain water.
SUBWAY - male, because it uses the same old lines to pick people up.
HOURGLASS - female, because over time, the weight shifts to the bottom.
HAMMER - male, because it hasn't evolved much over the last 5,000 years, but it's handy to have around.
REMOTE CONTROL - female ! .... Ha! You thought I'd say male. But consider, it gives men pleasure, he'd be lost without it, and while he doesn't always know the right buttons to push, he keeps trying.
Low humidity, cooler temps . . . . even the leaves are falling ( thanks to Isabel).
I have been enjoying the stint of teaching 8th grade Algebra and Math. My 6 weeks with the same class will end next week, but I have already been asked to return to help fill in for other classes. Being with the students has taught me alot about life, and I am sure that there will be songs out of these experiences in the near future.
My hope is that more adults will continue to get involved in American kids lives, and help them realize the importance of listening to the adults in their lives. Some kids are given the opportunity to run their families, and tell their parents how it will be, and this is amazing to me. If we can continue to reach out to those with limited parenting and absentee families, or parents who just don't seem to know how to lead, then our future will be a brighter place. I have just put an excerpt on my website. It's a great article that's called Why Teens Rebel. Check it out if you want some eye-opening statistics.
All in all I am really enjoying this period in my life, and I hope that I have been having a positive impact on some young lives, but let me tell you what is happening this weekend . . . .
MUSIC THIS WEEKEND
Tomorrow ( Friday, Sept 26),Dulcie Taylor will be performing at the Six String Cafe. Darcy is fantastic, and has won many awards for her songwriting. Another big reason to see Dulcie is for her band. John Landau and Henry Cross are utterly wonderful musicians from the DC area. . . .. so you recognize a last name? Cross, maybe? Yep, he is the lucky man married to my identical (soul) twin, Rachel. Henry plays bass, and is the real reason Rachel always has a big smile on her face all the time. Anyway, the whole Darcy package is fantastic. Check them out starting at 8 pm Friday night.
While attending a marriage seminar on communication, Tom and his wife Peg listened to the instructor declare, "It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other."
He addressed the men, "Can you describe your wife's favorite flower ?"
Tom leaned over, touched his wife's arm gently, and whispered, "Pillsbury All-Purpose, isn't it?"
The rest of the story is not pleasant.
Book Time
My brother, John Cape, has been involved in helping write a book about the reconstruction of Iraq. It is finally out . . .
Reconstructing Eden: A Comprehensive Plan for The Post-War Political and Economic Development of Iraq, co-authored by former Secretary of the Army Thomas E. White.
Here's what the publisher has to say. . . . "The combat phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom went exactly as intended. American superiority in all dimensions of modern warfare -- land, sea and air -- enabled a lightning-fast advance to Baghdad and the toppling of the regime of Sadaam Hussein.
And the peace process is going exactly as designed -- or not designed -- as the case may be. Unbelievably, American lives are being lost daily and the U.S. is spending over $4 billion per month in Iraq without a cohesive, integrated blueprint to build a stable, self-sufficient country within an identified timeframe.
"We did not conduct the war this way and we should not continue rebuilding the country in a haphazard manner. The result will be a financial disaster, more lives lost, chaos in Iraq and squandered American goodwill," White explains. "Given the enormous cost of the war -- in both lives and money -- we must move rapidly to achieve our strategic objective of creating a new and economically prosperous Iraq founded on democratic principles. Reconstructing Eden is a road map to achieve that end."
"Having won the war by the skillful execution of a competent plan, the winning of the peace remains elusive," White said. "The plan offered in Reconstructing Eden will bring about the outcome we seek at a price we can afford."
His co-authors bring considerable expertise to this project. Robert C. Kelly, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CountryWatch, has a Ph.D. from Harvard University in economics, an undergraduate degree from West Point and is an expert in stabilization aid in post-war developing economies. John M. Cape is a Stanford MBA who studied Arabic at West Point and spent two years working on the construction of a military city near the border of Iraq in the 1980s. Denise Youngblood Coleman is the Country Review editor for CountryWatch and is nearing completion on a Ph.D. in anthropology at Rice University.
CountryWatch, Inc. is an information provider and online publisher for business, government and academic clients who need up-to-date information and news on 192 countries of the world.
I hope you are doing well whatever in whatever space you are occupying at this time. I am getting excited about playing in my home area again, and it is coming up soon.. . .
The Six String is a great place to eat and relax, so come hungry for food and music!
To all you Martians who will be in the area, I hope you can stop by as well. I know that this in an unusual encounter and may not come around for another 60,000 years, so while in the neighborhood, please feel free to stop in and enjoy some great food, and fun & some good LIVE music.
For those of you who are unaware of this visit. . . . here's the scoop:
Earth is catching up with Mars, an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in Recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years but it may be as long as 60,000 years.
The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide.
At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to he naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August Mars will rise in the east at 10 p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m. But by the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 a.m.
That's pretty convenient when it comes to seeing something that no human has seen in recorded history.
Pesky Little Ones
Have you heard the latest news of West Nile Virus in our area? Please consider how you protect yourself and your family. I would highly recommend NOT using chemicals because you are bound to kill off more of the mosquito predators, which will in turn give us an even larger mosquito population. Remember to empty any containers you see with standing water, and put fish in your water gardens to eat mosquitoes that want to populate there.
Here is another suggestion that was in a gardening forum:
Put some water in a white dinner plate and add just a couple of drops of Lemon Fresh Joy dishwashing soap. Set the dish on a porch or patio. Not sure what attracts them, the lemon smell, the white color, or what, but mosquitoes flock to it, and drop dead, or fall into the water, or on the floor within about 10 ft. It's supposed to work great.
I am including a link that I think will be helpful in practicing to deal with these little guys. Hey, just trying to help out however I can.. . http://www.shockhaber.com/zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.htm ( I have also been told that this helps release stress)
Dress Code
I guess I haven't upset the school board too bad by quoting them in my song. They are welcoming me into Southern Middle School, (in Person County) as an 8th grade math and Algebra 1 teacher while the regular teacher goes on Maternity leave (which could be any day now). I am really looking forward to spending some quality time with these kids, and I hope I can help them understand math, and make it fun for them as well. If any of you have ideas on keeping math interesting, please let me know. I just hope I don't violate the Dress Code. ; )
A New Diet . . . The Blonde Diet ( yes, I represent that!)
This blonde was terribly overweight, so her doctor put her on a diet. "I want you to eat regularly for 2 days, then skip a day, and repeat this procedure for 2 weeks. The next time I see you, you'll have lost at least 5 pounds."
When she returned, she shocked the doctor by losing nearly 20 pounds.
"Why, that's amazing!" the doctor said, "Did you follow my instructions?"
The blonde nodded, "I'll tell you though, I thought I was going to drop dead that third day."
"From hunger, you mean?" asked the doctor.
"No, from skipping." ~~~~~~~~
On that note, I will close and say, stay healthy and enjoy this cooler than usual summer, and be thankful that the drought is DEFINITELY over !!! All those prayers have been answered, so remember, be careful what you ask for, and be SPECIFIC ; ))
As I sit here composing this email, I am looking out my window into my butterfly garden. All I can say is that these beautiful plants really do their job. Our butterfly bush, purple cone flowers, rubeckia, verbena and other vibrant & colorful plants must look and taste wonderful to all these winged creatures . . . oh! There's another hummingbird!
I have just returned from visiting my folks in Surfside Beach, SC, and we had such a fantastic time. Our visit included a trip to Medieval Times, and my daughter Casey was picked as the Queen of Love & Beauty by the Black & White Knight. She got such a kick out of that! If you get a chance, you may want to take your family and/or friends there for a trip to the past. If you are interested in staying in a beautiful condo in the Myrtle beach area, without the mess of being in Myrtle Beach, let me know, and I will tell you about a great condo I know for rent there. Ocean forint, and has a pool. very family oriented as well.
Yes, between traveling to the UK and the beach, I have been taking a bit of time away from performing to spend with my family, but it is time to get back to making some music. This weekend I am traveling again with my identical twin from DC, Rachel Cross. Our time together in Florida was so much fun, I am sure this will be a repeat of that. Although these shows are limited to the Carolinas this time, please keep an eye out for future performances in other areas. Here's what we have in store this week...
Are you bothered by these pesky insects? Dragonflies are great aides in helping rid your area of them, so do what you can to attract them, and limit use of pesticides. Here are some other great ideas I have received from friends and fans. . .
Here is a good advise for the summer, for those who like to sit and enjoy the outdoors, but don't like those pesky mosquitoes. PUT some water in a white dinner plate and add just a couple of drops of Lemon Fresh Joy dishwashing soap. Set the dish on a porch or patio. Not sure what attracts them, the lemon smell, the white color, or what, but mosquitoes flock to it, and drop dead, or fall into the water, or on the floor within about 10 ft. Works just super!
OK, mosquitoes...prepare to be repelled! Use Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets...Best thing ever used in Louisiana..just wipe on & go...Great for Babies
Bob, a fisherman, takes one vitamin B-1 tablet a day April through October. He said it works. He was right. Hasn't had a mosquito bite in 33 years. Try it. Every one he has talked into trying it works on them.Vitamin B-1( Thiamine Hydrochloride 100 mg.)
If you eat bananas, the mosquitoes like you -- something about the banana oil as your body processes it. Stop eating bananas for the summer and the mosquitoes will be much less interested.
This is going to floor you, but one of the best insect repellents someone (who is in the woods every day) found, is Vick's Vaporub.
Plant marigolds around the yard, the flowers give off a smell that bugs do not like, so plant some in that garden also to help ward off bugs without using insecticides.
"Tough guy" Marines who spend a great deal of time "camping out" say that the very best mosquito repellant you can use is Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil mixed about half and half with alcohol.
One of the best natural insect repellants is made from the clear real vanilla. This is the pure vanilla that is sold in Mexico. It works great for mosquitoes and ticks, don't know about other insects.
when all else fails -- get a frog
Pass this on to anyone who likes being out in the evening or is having a cook out. Enjoy the mosquito free summer.
Nature sure has an interesting sense of humor. This spring has been blossoming and blooming like crazy here, temps have been in the 70s and even some 80s, yet just so we don't too quickly forget this past winter, today we are getting periods of snow, highs in the 40s, with lows around 30. Below is a wonderful poem written by Audrey Hepburn when she was asked to share her "beauty tips." It was read at her funeral years later.
For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands; one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.
An Important Question Answered by many. . .
WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD?
The official Version
GEORGE W. BUSH We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road or not. The chicken is either with us or it is against us. There is no middle ground here.
AL GORE I invented the chicken. I invented the road. Therefore, the chicken crossing the road represented the application of these two different functions of government in a new, reinvented way designed to bring greater services to the American people.
BILL CLINTON I did not cross the road with THAT chicken. What do you mean by chicken? Could you define chicken, please?
RALPH NADER The chicken's habitat on the original side of the road had been polluted by unchecked industrialist greed. The chicken did not reach the unspoiled habitat on the other side of the road because it was crushed by The wheels of a gas-guzzling SUV.
PAT BUCHANAN To steal a job from a decent, hardworking American.
RUSH LIMBAUGH I don't know why the chicken crossed the road, but I'll bet it was getting a government grant to cross the road, and I'll bet someone out there is already forming a support group to help chickens with crossing-the-road syndrome. How much more of this can real Americans take? Chickens crossing the road paid for by their tax dollars, and when I say tax dollars, I'm talking about your money, money the government took from you to build roads for chickens to cross.
MARTHA STEWART No one called to warn me which way that chicken was Going. I had a standing order at the farmer's market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a certain level. No little bird gave me any insider information.
JERRY FALWELL Because the chicken was gay! Isn't it obvious? Can't you people see the plain truth in front of your face? The chicken was going to the "other side." That's what they call it-the other side. Yes, my friends, that chicken is gay. And, if you eat that chicken, you will become gay too. I say we boycott all chickens until we sort out this abomination that the liberal media whitewashes with seemingly harmless phrases like "the other side."
DR. SEUSS Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, but why it crossed, I've not been told!
ERNEST HEMINGWAY To die. In the rain. Alone.
MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. I envision a world where all chickens will be free to cross roads without having their motives called into question.
GRANDPA In my day, we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Someone told us that the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough for us.
BARBARA WALTERS Isn't that interesting? In a few moments we will be listening to the chicken tell, for the first time, the heartwarming story of how it experienced a serious case of molting and went on to accomplish its life-long dream of crossing the road.
JOHN LENNON Imagine all the chickens crossing roads in peace.
ARISTOTLE It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.
KARL MARX It was a historical inevitability.
RONALD REAGAN What chicken?
CAPTAIN KIRK To boldly go where no chicken has gone before.
FOX MULDER You saw it cross the road with your own eyes! How many more chickens have to cross before you believe it?
SIGMUND FREUD The fact that you are at all concerned that the chicken crossed the road reveals your underlying sexual insecurity.
BILL GATES I have just released eChicken 2003, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your checkbook - and Internet Explorer is an inextricable part of eChicken.
ALBERT EINSTEIN Did the chicken really cross the road or did the road move beneath the chicken?
JOHNNY COCHRAN Because the road was black and the chicken was white. We must acquit.
THE BIBLE And God came down from the heavens, and He said unto the chicken, "Thou shalt cross the road." And the chicken crossed the road, and there was much rejoicing.
This is long, but fantastic, and I think you may agree that this is the new way to thinking, thanks to our wonderful President. . . .
long, but very funny and smart
A letter to the London Observer from Terry Jones (ex Monty Python). Letter to the Observer Sunday January 26, 2003 The Observer
I'm really excited by George Bush's latest reason for bombing Iraq: he's running out of patience. And so am I! For some time now I've been really pissed off with Mr. Johnson, who lives a couple of doors down the street.
Well, him and Mr. Patel, who runs the health food shop. They both give me queer looks, and I'm sure Mr. Johnson is planning something nasty for me, but so far I haven't been able to discover what.
I've been round to his place a few times to see what he's up to, but he's got everything well hidden. That's how devious he is. As for Mr. Patel, don't ask me how I know, I just know - from very good sources - that he is, in reality, a Mass Murderer. I have leafleted the street telling them that if we don't act first, he'll pick us off one by one. Some of my neighbors say, if I've got proof, why don't I go to the police? But that's simply ridiculous. The police will say that they need evidence of a crime with which to charge my neighbors. They'll come up with endless red tape and quibbling about the rights and wrongs of a pre-emptive strike and all the while Mr. Johnson will be finalizing his plans to do terrible things to me, while Mr. Patel will be secretly murdering people.
Since I'm the only one in the street with a decent range of automatic firearms, I reckon it's up to me to keep the peace. But until recently that's been a little difficult. Now, however, George W. Bush has made it clear that all I need to do is run out of patience, and then I can wade in and do whatever I want! And let's face it, Mr. Bush's carefully thought-out policy towards Iraq is the only way to bring about international peace and security. The one certain way to stop Muslim fundamentalist suicide bombers targeting the US or the UK is to bomb a few Muslim countries that have never threatened us.
That's why I want to blow up Mr. Johnson's garage and kill his wife and children. Strike first! That'll teach him a lesson. Then he'll leave us in peace and stop peering at me in that totally unacceptable way.
Mr. Bush makes it clear that all he needs to know before bombing Iraq is that Saddam is a really nasty man and that he has weapons of mass destruction - even if no one can find them. I'm certain I've just as much justification for killing Mr. Johnson's wife and children as Mr. Bush has for bombing Iraq. Mr. Bush's long-term aim is to make the world a safer place by eliminating 'rogue states' and 'terrorism'. It's such a clever long-term aim because how can you ever know when you've achieved it? How will Mr. Bush know when he's wiped out all terrorists? When every single terrorist is dead? But then a terrorist is only a terrorist once he's committed an act of terror. What about would-be terrorists? These are the ones you really want to eliminate, since most of the known terrorists, being suicide bombers, have already eliminated themselves.
Perhaps Mr. Bush needs to wipe out everyone who could possibly be a future terrorist? Maybe he can't be sure he's achieved his objective until every Muslim fundamentalist is dead? But then some moderate Muslims might convert to fundamentalism. Maybe the only really safe thing to do would be for Mr. Bush to eliminate all Muslims? It's the same in my street. Mr. Johnson and Mr. Patel are just the tip of the iceberg. There are dozens of other people in the street who I don't like and who - quite frankly - look at me in odd ways. No one will be really safe until I've wiped them all out. My wife says I might be going too far but I tell her I'm simply using the same logic as the President of the United States. That shuts her up.
Like Mr. Bush, I've run out of patience, and if that's a good enough reason for the President, it's good enough for me. I'm going to give the whole street two weeks - no, 10 days - to come out in the open and hand over all aliens and interplanetary hijackers, galactic outlaws and interstellar terrorist masterminds, and if they don't hand them over nicely and say 'Thank you', I'm going to bomb the entire street to kingdom come. It's just as sane as what George W. Bush is proposing - and, in contrast to what he's intending, my policy will destroy only one street.
Hey, I'm Just trying to help. Here's how
B.S. BINGO
Are things getting a bit too tense at work? Do you keep falling asleep at all the meetings? What about those long and boring conference calls? Here's a way to change all of that!
1. Before (or during) your next meeting, seminar, or conference call, prepare your "Bullshit Bingo" card by drawing a square. I find that 5" x 5" is a good size. Divide it into columns: five across and five down. That will give you 25 1-inch blocks.
2. Write one of the following words/phrases in each block:
synergy strategic fit core competencies best practices
bottom line revisit take that off-line 24/7
out of the loop benchmark value-added pro-active
win-win think outside the box fast track result-driven
empower (or empowerment) knowledge base at the end of the day
touch base mind set client focus(ed) ballpark
game plan leverage
3. Check off the appropriate block when you hear one of those words/phrases.
4. When you get five blocks horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, standup and shout "BULLSHIT!"
The following are testimonials from satisfied "Bullshit Bingo" players:
"I had been in the meeting for only five minutes when I won!" - Jack W., Boston, MA
"My attention span at meetings has improved dramatically!" - David D., Tampa, FL
"What a gas! Meetings will never be the same for me after my first win." - Bill R., New York, NY
"The atmosphere was tense in the last meeting as 14 of us waited for the fifth box!" - Ben G., Denver, CO
"The speaker was stunned as eight of us screamed "BULLSHIT" for the third time in two hours!" - Susan T., Seattle, WA
"Bullshit Bingo really keeps me on my toes. As a professional meeting presenter, "I've had to come up with new ways to describe the same old shit get ready for Bullshit Bingo II!" - Jill C., Kansas City, MO >>
I am sitting at my desk looking at the beautiful snow that fell last night, and watching the wildlife (kids and dogs) frolicking. I hope you have a chance to enjoy it as well. With temps dropping in to single digits tonight, it is a good time to find someone to snuggle up to and stay warm.
There are some good political cartoons there. Thanks to everyone for sending me these funnies!
~~~~ A kindergarten pupil told his teacher he'd found a cat. She asked him if it was dead or alive. "Dead." She was informed. "How do you know?" she asked her pupil. "Because I pissed in its ear and it didn't move," answered the child innocently. "You did WHAT?!?" the teacher exclaimed in surprise. "You know," explained the boy, "I leaned over and went 'Pssst!' and it didn't move."
~~~~ One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was tucking her son into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, "Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?" The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug. "I can't dear," she said. "I have to sleep in Daddy's room." A long silence was broken at last by his shaky little voice: "The big sissy."
~~~~ ( Not autobiographical) When I was six months pregnant with my third child, my three year old came into the room when I was just getting ready to get into the shower. She said, "Mommy, you are getting fat!" I replied, "Yes, honey, remember Mommy has a baby growing in her tummy" "I know," she replied, but what's growing in your butt?"
~~~~ A little boy was doing his math homework. He said to himself, "Two plus five, that son of a bitch is seven. Three plus six, that son of a bitch is nine...." His mother heard what he was saying and gasped, "What are you doing?" The little boy answered, "I'm doing my math homework, Mom." "And this is how your teacher taught you to do it?" the mother asked. "Yes," he answered. Infuriated, the mother asked the teacher the next day, "What are you teaching my son in math?" The teacher replied, "Right now, we are learning addition." The mother asked, "And are you teaching them to say two plus two, that son of a bitch is four?" After the teacher stopped laughing, she answered, "What I taught them was, two plus two, THE SUM OF WHICH, is four."
~~~~ One day the first grade teacher was reading the story of Chicken Little to her class. She came to the part of the story where Chicken Little tried to warn the farmer. She read, ".... and so Chicken Little went up to the farmer and said, "The sky is falling, the sky is falling!" The teacher paused then asked the class, "And what do you think the farmer said?" One little girl raised her hand and said, "I think he said: 'Holy Shit! A talking chicken!'" The teacher was unable to teach for the next 10 minutes.

Deirdre Flint
Brilliantly humorous!
3 - 5 pm $5
What do cheerleaders, bridesmaid dresses and deadbeat boob fairies have in common? Not much unless you count the fact that they’re all subject matter for the catchy, off-beat songs of Deirdre Flint. Tunes like “1-900-Score-A-Date” and “Cheerleader” have landed her on such stages as The Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, The Kennedy Center Millennium stage and a host of great venues and colleges throughout the country. Deirdre delivers a show filled with upbeat, intelligent satire, highlighted with the perfect touch of melancholy. www.deirdreflint.com
“Grown up satire with a non-cynical wink and easily more compelling than so much that reaches the million-selling mark.” Billboard Magazine
Reserve your seat as soon as you can. We need to make sure we have enough indoor seating, and that there is an interest for us doing this again. email me at kim@... or call (336) 599-1895 by January 2nd.

Can you believe we are coming down to the end of another year? As they say, time flies when you're having fun, or is it time goes faster as you get older. . . . Hummm. I guess that applies to me on both counts.

Holiday Cooking. .
Holiday cooking is ever prevalent, and already I have been doing my share of it, and loving every minute! I would like to share a new recipe I have just discovered as a Pampered Chef consultant. This one is for all you chocolate lovers, and it is VERY quick and easy.
Foolproof DARK CHOCOLATE FUDGE:
(Makes about 2 pounds) 3 (6-ounce) packages semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk (NOT evaporated milk) Dash salt 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
In heavy saucepan, over low heat, melt chips with sweetened condensed milk and salt. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla. Let cool in your saucepan for about half an hour, stirring occasionally. Load into cookie press. Press onto cutting board. OR pour into oblong pan, and let cool. cut to the size you want. This is a rich fudge, so pieces can be cut pretty small for a BIG taste!
Top 10 reasons why... Chocolate is Better Than Air! 1. If you don't get any chocolate in the next 3 minutes, you'll still be alive. 2. Chocolate smells better. 3. Chocolate has taste. 4. You can see chocolate. 5. You can embrace chocolate. 6. Chocolate won't mess up your hairdo. 7. Chocolate won't lift your skirt up. 8. Swallowing chocolate won't make you belch. 9. Big city chocolate is not polluted. 10. It's okay to be full of hot chocolate.
( IF you would like to host a Pampered Chef party, please contact me and let's schedule one. kim@... . If you are unfamiliar with Pampered Chef products, I can tell you this, as someone who loves to cook, the PC products have helped with prep time and cooking on stones makes the food better. That's why I decided to put some of my energy into sharing these products with those who love to cook, or are cooking impaired.)
~~~~~~~~~~
I hope your holiday season is filled with love, happiness, and continued hope for world we all want to share. Peace to you and your loved ones!
(ps please share this email with all your friends and family, esp. if they live in the areas I will be performing in. Thanks so much for your encouragement and support!)
YEAH! Finally we are getting much needed rain! ! ! I am not sure how much we have gotten since last night, BUT our wheelbarrow that was left in the yard is almost totally full of water. That's alot of rain! I hope that all our areas that have been in dire straights for rain, are having some of their wishes answered with this.
Fall is upon us, trees are starting to change into their splendid colors, and temps are dropping ( of course, allergies are also a big part of fall for me) What a beautiful season.
I had a fantastic time touring with Rachel Cross for 2 weeks, and we met lots of great folks, and dodged 3 hurricanes. While we were in Melbourne FL, we were watching Kyle, Lili & Isadore. For a while it looked like Kyle and Lili were on a collision path, and so I commented that if the two met, fell in love, and spawned baby hurricanes, they would be called "Kyla-Lili" ( pronounced as Calla- lili) Oh well, it was funny when I said it...
This is a sweet coffee shop that really encourages a listening audience. Hope you can check it out
November will be a month of professional development with the North East Regional Folk Alliance Conference, and staying close to the fort while my husband gets the opportunity to go to England. I will be back in full swing in December. Check my website for full details.
I WOULD LIKE TO RECOMMEND. . .
Tomorrow night (Saturday, October 12) in Cary, at the Six String Cafe, some friends of mine from the Richmond area will be putting on one hell of a show. They are called the Burnt Taters ,and will definitely put smiles on your face, and a tap in your foot.
A Short (blonde) History Lesson? Thanks to my friend Blossom for supplying this
A blonde was sitting in class when the professor asked her if she knew what the Roe vs. Wade decision was. She sat there for quite a while pondering this very profound question and finally sighed and said, "I think that is the decision George Washington made prior to crossing the Delaware."
Rachel Cross and I have been having a great time touring across GA, FL & AL and keeping away from Hurricanes. In fact, one of the places we were supposed to play last Thursday was underwater due to Isidore. It appears that they will be hit hard again this week. 2 whammies in a week! You know that has to be tremendously worrisome for the folks in the northern Gulf. My thoughts are with them this week for sure!
Just wanted to give a quick reminder of 2 up-coming shows
Heart Smarts!
I have never tried this, and do not think that it is an urban legend, but I did receive this email from a good friend. I hope you never need to know this info, but just in case. . . .
HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE
Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, this article seemed to be in order. Without help, the person whose heart stops beating properly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.
However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.
Deep breaths and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.
I can't believe that kids are starting back to school so soon. Mine actually go back tomorrow. Another summer vacation becomes part of their memories.
I just got back from my summer camp. For the last 4 years, I have been going to the Swannanoa Gathering's Contemporary Folk and Guitar week, and think of it as my way of reconnecting. This year I have been so focused Illusions,and introducing it to the world, that I have not been playing much and definitely not been in the creative mode. I think last week put me back where I want and need to be. If you ever wanted to become immersed in music, perhaps the Swannanoa Gathering is a good place for you to be as well. There are many different focuses throughout a 4 week period, and one may be perfect for you - old time, Celtic, dance, dulcimer, and much more. To find out more, you can go to their site at http://www.swangathering.com/
I'm sure you've noticed that over the years our nation's federal police authority has grown to include a large number of multi-letter agencies - FBI, CIA, NSA, INS, IRS, DEA, BATF, etc.
Now I understand that we are to have the "Federal Air Transportation Airport Security Service."
Can't you see them now, these highly trained men and women in their black outfits with their initials in large white letters across their backs: "FATASS."
I feel safer already
Now, Here's something I never thought about before. . . .
Bob Renkes of Petroleum Equipment Institute is working on a campaign to try and make people aware of fires as a result of "static" at gas pumps. His company has researched 150 cases of these fires. His results were very surprising:
1) Out of 150 cases, almost all of them were women.
2) Almost all cases involved the person getting back in their vehicle while the nozzle was still pumping gas, when finished and they went back to pull the nozzle out the fire started, as a result of static.
3) Most had on rubber-soled shoes.
4) Most men never get back in their vehicle until completely finished. This is why they are seldom involved in these types of fires.
5) Don't ever use cell phones when pumping gas.
6) It is the vapors that come out of the gas that cause the fire, when connected with static charges.
7) There were 29 fires where the vehicle was reentered and the nozzle was touched during refueling from a variety of makes and models. Some resulting in extensive damage to the vehicle, to the station, and to the customer.
8) Seventeen fires that occurred before, during or immediately after the gas cap was removed and before fueling began.
Mr. Renkes stresses to NEVER get back into your vehicle while filling it with gas. If you absolutely HAVE to get in your vehicle while the gas is pumping, make sure you get out, close the door TOUCHING THE METAL, before you ever pull the nozzle out. This way the static from your body will be discharged before you ever remove the nozzle. As I mentioned earlier, The Petroleum Equipment Institute, along with several other companies now, are really trying to make the public aware of this danger. You can find out more information by going to < <http://www.pei.org> http://www.pei.org << <http://www.pei.org> http://www.pei.org . Once here, click in the center of the screen where it says "Stop Static". I ask you to please send this information to ALL your family and friends, especially those who have kids in the car with them while pumping gas. If this were to happen to them, they may not be able to get the children out in time. Thanks for passing this along.
I look forward to seeing you soon, and hope you can make it to the Six String to see Danny & I this Thursday night. Be safe, and well. Below, I am including another email I received about safety tips for women. It is a bit long, but always good to remember.
Go with music in your heart and in your car stereos. . .
Please feel free to forward this email on to your friends and family. Thanks for helping spread the music!
Important Safety Tips for Women (An email being sent around, with info that makes sense)
A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interviewed on what they look for in a potential victim, and here are some interesting facts. They may NOT apply in all cases, but the tips offered could save someone's life:
- The first thing rapists look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun, braid or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets. Doesn't mean you should go get your hair cut, just be extra alert when by yourself in what could be a potentially dangerous situation. - The second thing rapists look for is clothing. They will look for women whose clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing. - They also look for women on their cell phones, searching through their purses, or doing other activities while walking, because they are off-guard and can be easily overpowered. - The time of day men are most likely to attack and rape a woman is in the early morning, between 5 and 8:30 a.m. - The number one place women are abducted from/attacked at is grocery store parking lots. Number two is office parking lots/garages. Number three is public restrooms. The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they don't have to worry about getting caught. - Only 2% of rapists said they carried weapons, because while rape carries a 3-5 year sentence, rape with a weapon is 15-20 years. If a woman puts up any kind of a fight at all, they tend to get discouraged, realizing that going after her isn't worth it. These men also said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas, or other similar objects that can be used from a distance. Keys are not a deterrent, because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you are not worth it. Defense mechanisms against attackers include: 1) If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look him in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk ("I can't believe it is so cold out here, we're in for a bad winter"). Once you've seen his face and could identify him in a lineup, you lose appeal as a target. 2) If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell "Stop!" or "Stay back!" Most of the rapists interviewed said they'd leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target. If you carry pepper spray, yelling "I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY!" and holding it out can be a deterrent. 3) If someone grabs you, you can't beat them with strength but you may be able to outsmart him. If he grabs your wrist, pull your wrist back so your hand is in waving position (palm facing forward) and twist it toward yourself, pulling your arm away. It is hard to hold onto wrist bones that are moving in that way. 4) If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh HARD. One woman in a defense class said she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her, and she broke through his skin and tore out muscle strands -- the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it hurts. 5) After the initial hit, always go for the groin. You might think that you'll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists said is that they want a woman who will not cause a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, and he's generally out of there. 6) If the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible. Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can, and if you see any odd behavior, don't dismiss it, go with your instincts. You may feel a little silly at the time, but you'd feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.
If you happen to go to Cary for the Fireworks on the 4th, stop by the Six String and catch Eliot Bronson and Sam Anderson. Eliot and just shared a performance together in Greenville SC. What a songwriter! You will enjoy him as well.
If you are in Roxboro and want to find something good to do with the family this weekend, I would recommend going to the Youth Summer Theatre Production of THE EDGE OF THENESTJuly 5th at 7:30 pm, and July 6th at 2:00 pm. Both my kids are in this play, and they have been singing me some great songs that are included in it.
Once again, I have been blessed with great press. I was the featured artist last week in the Greenville SC publication, MetroBEAT. What a great article. Dan Armonaitis was so fun to chat with, and he put our crazy conversation into a good read. . . at least for me, anyway. If you would like to check it out, go to their site http://www.metrobeat.net/gbase/Expedite/Content?oid=oid%3A1329, or mine at http://www.kimbuchanan.com/metrobeat.htm.
ALSO, there is a BRAND NEW National Publication coming out called the ROOM. Which stand for Reviews of Original Music. I am being featured in their very first publication. Each featured artist is also included on a compilation disc. 13 of us in all.
Here is their description of the magazine - The goal of Review Of Original Music is to bring you in contact with the vast network of unheard and often unrecognized indie musicians who exemplify the best of their specific musical genre. As a policy of The Room, we do not accept paid advertisements in either the magazine or online. Thus you get cover to cover in-depth stories and reviews of the many talented artists that we feature. Even better, we include a professionally mastered sampler CD that gives you an entire song (no MP3's here) of the 13 artists about whom we do a full feature story in each issue.
Their website is www.reviewoforiginalmusic.com and you can go there to subscribe. The first issue will come out in early August. Sounds like an excellent publication to subscribe to!
Please have a safe and enjoyable holiday. Drive safe, and please use your designated driver! They are also calling for caution where fireworks are concerned due to the drought conditions in so many places. Sorry, the mom in me just has tom come out sometimes. . .
If you would like, please share this email with your friends and family. Word of mouth is the best way for good news to spread!!!
I hope you can tune into Radio Crystal Blue, an internet radio show TONIGHT ( Tuesday, June 18th) , hosted by Dan Herman from 7:15 pm - 10:30 pm. You can tune it in by going to http://www.live365.com/stations/142950. I believe he also archives the show in a download-able form if you miss tonight's show. For more info on this, you can go to the site above or www.radiocrystalblue.com and see how to get that as well.
He chooses a different artist each week to feature as his "Gem of the Week", and this week, I happen to be the lucky recipient of his spotlight. Please tune in if you get a chance.
I am also heading out to Western NC, and SC next week and am looking forward to playing in these wonderful venues. Please share this information with friends and family you may have in the area.
I hope you are enjoying your summer. It has been a great year one so far for the gardens. In addition to the beautiful and bountiful flowers, we have already had fresh zucchini, beans, squash, and green tomatoes are clinging to the vines. The drought in this area is definitely starting to take its toll, though. If you know any good rain dances, now is a good time to do them. Perhaps everyone should go and wash their cars. That usually means rain for me.
Thanks to you all for being so supportive. I found out that ILLUSIONS was ranked in Millennium Music's corporate top 20 for a few weeks, and it was only available in 2 of their stores ( Raleigh & Durham, NC). This is fantastic news. Thanks to all of you who helped make this happen.
If you would like to share my emails with your friends, family, co-workers fellow music lovers, please know that I am thankful and appreciate your help in spreading the word about my music!
Hello ~ ( If you are getting this multiple times, I apologize )
Can you believe May is 2/3rds gone already! What a month. . . . the ILLUSIONS DEBUTante release party, Flat Rock Music Festival, and this weekend I will be celebrating my kid's milestones - Ashley's graduation from elementary school; Casey's 13th birthday, and my no-longer a 30 something birthday. Yep, can you believe it, 40 is like nothing I had ever imagined before. When I was a kid, 40 seemed ancient, but with role models like Joni Mitchell, Cher, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, and so many I cannot even name them all, all performing and entertaining the world, regardless of their age, 40 seems like a kid these days. ( At least this 40 year old feels like a kid.)
I have received so many wonderful gifts this month as well. These came in the form of reviews, and have taken my breath away! They can be found on my website (www.kimbuchanan.com/reviews.htm) , as well as scattered around the net and in magazine publications. I thought I would share the ones I know about. If you have seen - or see - others in the futures, please let me know.
Kim Buchanan may be a wholesome- looking mother of two, but she must have had an interesting past because she's really into mystic karma, hippie trippy, floating musical moods. (She even covers Grace Slick's "White Rabbit.") Most of these 14 tracks are dreamy, wondering folk music with straightforward lyrics sung in her pure, mother-earthy voice. "What prophet ever said 'Treat the women second rate,' I hope he'll burn forever with his hate," she croons bluntly in "See Me." In one of the CD's funnier moments, she teams up with daughters Casey and Ashley on "Dress Code" to parody what must have been a memo straight out of the kids' high school. ("Your undergarments are not to be visible... unless you're a cheerleader!") Scattered throughout are instrumental interludes, including a breathtaking percussion solo and a meditative melody with spiritual minor chords. The lush arrangements include flutes and violins, and sometimes she makes the guitar sound like a sitar. Triangle fans that packed her shows after the release of her first CD will be deliriously happy when they hear this one. -- Jennifer Layton
If my mom were this open-minded and mystic-oriented, I’d wonder what she was putting in her Maxwell House every morning. Kim Buchanan, a wholesome-looking mother of two, is already causing a buzz up and down the East Coast and on MP3.com with her dreamy, trippy take on folk music. Her second CD, Illusions, will take you right down the rabbit hole. And I’m not kidding – she covers Grace Slick’s “White Rabbit.” I really wish I could have overheard her take on the “say no to drugs” talk most parents have to give their kids.
Illusions is folk rock with a psychedelic edge and a soothing, meditative effect on the emotions. It also shows off Buchanan’s interesting angle on songwriting. “No Heart at All,” for example, directs one verse at the co-dependent wife of a man who abuses his children:
You’ve convinced yourself you’re righteous, and he’s shaping them with love, but that cruel and heinous treatment shows that he’s got no heart at all.
She also shows a spirited sense of humor by teaming up with daughters Casey and Ashley on “Dress Code.” She throws in another beautifully done cover song, George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” She croons wordlessly in the mellow instrumental “Speechless Peace.”
She tries everything. “See Me” picks up the tempo a little with a shuffle-beat country groove and violin. She blends ocean sounds into the title track. Through it all, her voice resonates from the soul of a muse.
Illusions is a beautiful musical journey into a new direction for folk music. Kids, you may want to supervise your parents while listening to this one. by Jennifer Layton.
(Jennifer also is featured on Indie-Music.com with an article on my favorite NC venue. . the Six String Cafe & Music Hall. )
If you missed the other reviews from Jim Graves/WFSS, The Cary News & Courier Times, you can click on www.kimbuchanan.com/reviews.htm to get totally caught up.
NOW, for some of my favorite reviews. Why? Because they are from my audience members. . .folks who have been so supportive and have become my friends. When reading these, I actually had tears in my eyes. Where were they posted? On Amazon.com's listing for ILLUSIONS.
A CD that catches your attention, May 9, 2002 Reviewer: Rick Davis from USA On May 5, Kim Buchanan had her CD release party for her new CD, "Illusions". My wife and I have been following Kim and Jubal's performances for a couple of years now, and the performance that night was one not to be missed. So when I finally got a chance to sit down and listen to her new CD, I was looking forward to seeing what she had done with it. It is no illusion that it is a great CD! I am very impressed with the quality of it - both music and recording quality.
The arrangements are well done and, of course, Kim (lead vocals, guitar), Jubal (percussion), Robin (bass and bg vocals), and Michael (violin and guitar) are each excellent musicians in their own right. But together, they are more than the sum of the parts.
The music itself shows that Kim pours a lot of heart and soul into her writing and performance. I was in a discussion recently where a friend, who is an excellent fiddle player, was describing the playing ability of a professional hammered dulcimer player she and I both know. Her comment was that he "played well" - he got all the notes and timing right. Then she went on to say that there is such a thing as "playing well", but there is also such a thing as playing with passion and heart. She thought the dulcimer player played well. Kim writes and sings and plays well, but she goes beyond that - she writes, sings and plays with passion and with heart, and that is what makes the music on this CD worth hearing - more than once.
But to leave it there would be to leave out the rest of the equation - the engineering and the production. Kim co-produced this CD with Jubal, and engineered and recorded it herself in her home studio. Being a musician myself, and being interested in recording, I was eager to hear what the quality of this DIY project was. One of the things I noticed was the mixing of the percussion and guitar in one piece to get a tolling bell sound. It was very nicely done - the type of thing I hope to be able to do when my time to record comes. Kim and Jubal did a great job producing this CD, and she did a great job engineering and recording it.
OK, so I'm using the word great a lot, but it's because this is one of the best CDs I've heard in a while! I listen to a lot of folk music, American, Celtic, Scandinavian, and have listened in the past more to Rock, Jazz, and Blues. Every once in a while, there comes along a CD that catches your attention for it's sheer elegance of production and performance and content. For me, this is one of those CDs.
Illusions Rocks the Triangle, May 9, 2002 Reviewer: Alan R. Light from Chapel Hill, NC United States Illusions is the greatly anticipated second release by Kim Buchanan, one of the most popular recording artist in the Triangle area. From the title track to the reprise at the end, the music is written and arranged in a style that just cannot be attached to existing genre's. The best description is Rock with a folk edge, or maybe vice versa! The concentration here is on music with memorable melodies and oh, that voice! It's strong, sweet and perfect at the same time! A number of the tracks, including the title track, "Illusions" are beautiful in the pictures they paint with both the melodies and the lyrics, but others like See Me and High Anxiety will throw you back in your seat. Then there's the hilarious "Dress Code" taken directly from the dress code at a local middle school! What a great piece of satire of our modern hypocrisy!! You must listen to this and play the whole thing over and over!!
Rachel Cross ( Wonderful DC songwriter whose music has a 'world' appeal) http://www.rachelcross.com
Do you know how you can tell you are playing at a classy joint? Some would say the red carpet, or the chandeliers, the incredible sound system. . . . but I saw, no! When I went into the restroom at the Kennedy Center, I was amazed. Each commode had a device that I had never seen before... of course, I don't get out much. When you arrive in your stall, you see a plastic sleeve around the seat. When you press a button, a new plastic cover rushes around the seat for your protection ( and if you're like me, your amazement). Worth the trip to DC just to see this.
I have gotten a few new reviews lately, You can go to my website and read the, if you'd like. I have submitted ILLUSIONS to quite a few publications, so if you see a review, please let me know about it. I have missed some in the past.
Well, no, not a REAL baby, but it sure was labor intensive. The comparisons are pretty great....
creation time of 9 - 10 months,
not sure what it would turn out like,
pouring heart, soul and love into it,
feeling like your body was being overtaken -(due to lack of sleep worrying about its arrival)
. . . and hoping that the world would welcome it with open arms
The actual arrival of my new 'baby' was Friday, March 22 at 1:30 pm, and it was a relatively painless delivery. She, we call her "Illusions", weighs less than a pound, is 5 3/4" wide, 5" tall, and less than a 1/2 inch wide.. . and very bright. . well that's due to the incredible artwork by one of my favorite artists, George Buchanan (www.georgebuchanan.com)
Being a proud 'mother', I am in the process of sending discs out to radio stations, and her first airplay ( at least to my knowledge) was last Friday at WFSS, (Fayetteville, 90.1 FM) on a show called ;'Free Flight', hosted by Jim Graves. He posted this brief review on the net, and this is what he said:
"... This is a lushly produced collection of songs, with violin, flute, bass, guitar, and Kim's percussionist, Jubal. It is a collection of moods, from sad to outraged to searching. She offers versions of "White Rabbit" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" here, as well as a few instrumental pieces. Very nice, and quite different from a lot of what's out there. "
If you have connections with radio stations you would like to be playing "Illusions", please let me know. Thanks.
I am very excited about this one! The Kennedy Center has a free show nightly on their Millennium stage. Jubal and I will be performing with my wonderful friends, Rachel Cross (www.rachelcross.com) and Mary Sue Twohy (www.marysuetwohy.com).
6 - 7 pm and is going to be streaming live on the net. for more info, you can go to http://kennedy-center.org/programs/millennium/. They will keep it in their archive files, so if you miss it on the 8th, you can return and see it at your convenience.
THIS WILL BE THE LAST SHOW with Michael Hsu. He will be graduating from Duke and moving away. If you haven't seen him with us before, here's your last chance.
There are also some other special guests planned to join us on-stage. Hope you can make it!
Joke - My neighbor sent this one to me, and I thought it was very funny. Hope you like it.
The Importance of Having the Correct E-Mail Address!
It seems there was this couple from Minneapolis who decided to go to Florida for a few days to thaw out during one particularly cold winter. Since both spouses worked, they had difficulty coordinating their schedules, so the decision was made to have the husband leave for Florida on a certain day, with the wife following him one day later.
The man made it down to Florida and arrived at his hotel. Upon getting to his room, he decided to open his laptop and send his wife back in Minneapolis an email. However, he left off one letter in typing his wife's email address, and sent the email off without realizing the error he made.
In another part of the country, a widow had just returned from the funeral of her husband, a Methodist pastor of many years, who had been called to glory just a few days earlier. She decided to check her email because she was expecting to hear from her husband's relatives and friends. Upon reading the first email, she let out a loud scream, fainted and fell to the floor. The woman's son rushed into the room and found his mother on the floor. He glanced up at the computer screen and saw the following email message: To My Loving Wife: I've just been checked in. Everything has been prepared for your arrival here tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then. Your Devoted Husband. PS: Sure is HOT down here.
Check this out. It is pretty cool! My uncle sent this to me, and it is fun to play with. Now, you, too can control time.
If you enjoy this letter, please forward it on to your friends and family. Word of mouth ( or email) is truly the best form of advertising there is! Thanks
I hope you all have a wonderful April, and that the sun and rain makes your personal gardens and grasses greener than the other side's. Peace to you through music and smiles.
