Hi,

I attempted the sample and hold mod. Installed it into all the right locations,
etc. The board is getting the right power. But, The sample and hold does not
work, MG1 still works when the switch is in that position. The speed selection
of MG1 or MG2 does not work at all. I'm showing a fluctuation of voltage out of
the s/h output on my multimeter (no I don't have an oscilloscope but an 8060A).

Thanks,
Hayden

So I did get my sample and hold mod to work. I had to attach different parts of
the mod wheel pot to the MG1 or sample and hold switch. Maybe it was because I
have the old revision mp or maybe the schematic for the mod is wrong.

Anyways, now what I found is that if I'm using the arpeggiator clocked by MG2
and the sample and hold clocked by MG2, the sample and hold is lagging. I think
the S/H circuit is looking for a positive going trigger while MG2 is spitting
out a negative going trigger. I could make a little trigger converter in my
circuit to fix this. Anyone have any opinions or experience with this?

It is not the MG2. It is the Arpeggiator: the arpeggiator clock-in is a
"switched trigger" and - if fed with a voltage clock - clocks on the
negative edge.

You find a instruction for the modification on
http://fa.utfs.org/diy/korg_monopoly/modifications.html
look for: "V-Trigger to S-Trigger Adapter for the Arpeggio Clock"

That worked. Thanks!

I also soldered the MG2 clock on the 356 board instead. Specifically to the right side of the 10k resistor from the arpeggiator trigger mod at J42. Now the sample and hold is clocked by MG2 or by the external arpeggiator trigger in depending on what is hooked up.

Subject: Keyboard CV generation problems? (with video)
paulsikivie
Send Email Send Email

Hello everyone. Any insight from M/P wizards here would be much appreciated.

There's a video I made of the problems: http://youtu.be/MAD3U8O3jA0

Symptom: Playing M/P's keyboard produces wrong pitches. It's scaled tighter
(microtonally), with occasional skips. In "normal" transposition the top octave
of keys [32-44], span about a P5th in pitch. Then between the B3 and C4 [31 and
32] there's another 5th. Then we cover a major third in the span of an octave
and a minor third [key B3; 31 to Ab2; 17]. The interval between Ab and G is a
major 2nd roughly. Then there's a minor third heard divided between the last
remaining 14 keys [16 to 1]. The pitches waver audibly. Using the octave
transposition moves the irregularities faithfully - ie the skips.

External CV control is fine, everything sounds good.

This problem got worse gradually, but over the course of a month or two, and
after a long period of working correctly.

From what I've read, it sounds like it could be the power supply voltages, or
the key assigner. It doesn't seem like a problem with the matrix in the keybed
because the symptoms don't align with how it's divided up. Thank you for any
help.

This sounds like broken D/A converter. Replace CD4069 on Arpeggiator board.

It is NOT a calibration thing

PS: after replacing the CD4069 some calibration of the D/A might be
necessary. But don't touch any calibration thing unless you did not
reassure, that the D/A is working properly again.

Hello,

I'm Valerio, from Italy.

I've tried to set up the demo version of Silent Way SW Voice Controller 1.6.0 in Logic 9.1.7 to control my M/P via a Motu 828mk3 Hybrid but it doesn't work.

Has anybody successfully tried this thing?

Here is what I've done (following instruction shwon in Expert Sleepers YT video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ZUke1CDYY8E:

Physical Connections

- Motu Out 7 goes into MP CV In via the tip plug (ring floating) of a Hosa TRS/2 x TS cable.
- Motu Out 8 goes into MP Trig In via the tip plug (ring floating) of a Hosa TRS/2 x TS cable.
- MP Output goes into Motu In 5.

Logic Setup

I created 2 tracks:

- 1 audio track fed by input 7 (that is Motu In 5)
- 1 SW Instrument track which takes as input Silent Way SW Voice Controller and output to 7-8 channels.

Then I've sidechained input 7 to Silent Way.

In the mixer I've created 2 auxes Silent Way track which output to 5-6 channels (Aux 1) and 7-8 (Aux 2).

That's it.

In the meter of Silent Way channel I can see a continous signal in channel 7 and when I hit a key in my master keyboard I see the signal in channel 8 but nothing happens.

Any idea?

Thanks

Valerio

Hi Valerio -

I have it working in Ableton Live with an MS-10, so I know it definitely works with Korg gear that uses CV.  Unfortunately, I just purchased my Mono/Poly and sent it off for my tech to check out so I have not tried it with the Mono/Poly yet.

However, just a few ideas:

With my MS-10 I had to invert the gate to have it trigger properly.  On the Voice Controller plugin I have it set like this:

Gate Open: 0
Trig On: 1
Vel Max: 1
Gate Closed: 1
Trig Off: 0
Vel Min: -1

What happens if you try calibrating using the "Calibrate Hz/V" button?

Hello Natalia,

I could imagine, that the gate voltage is too low.

@Valerio: What happens, if you do the followgin:
* Connect only the CV but don't plug the Gate cable into the Monopoly. *
Then press and hold a key on the keyboard.
* Then press play in Logic.
Does the pitch now follow the pitches of the sequence in Logic?

Yes! Although it's not calibrated. After this test I've reconnected the gate and much to my surprise the M/P responded to the notes coming from Logic. I've thought maybe it was the cable so I've changed it with another one. And it does keep reponding.

After that I've tried to calibrate but that doesn't work. The calibration curve seems randomic. And every time I try to calibrate Silent Way generate a different (uncalibrated) curve.

Thanks Florian and Natalia, any further suggestion will be appreciated.

@Natalia: I've tried the tweaks you suggest but to no avail.

Greetings to all!

A new member here and hope to seek some advise on the current state of my MP

I recently modded the MP with CHD 's midi retrofit. After completing the
retrofitting, i ran some tests on the midi functions, they all went according to
plan. The only thing its the low audio output for both Headphones and Main
Output , sometimes it goes really soft, but not totally silent.

When the audio is really soft, by Opening up the resonance to full and sweeping
the filter , i could clearly hear the filter screaming away as it should but
with extremely soft VCOs in the background. I fiddled around with the ADSR, its
all good but with VCOs very faintly in the background.

On a Good Day, the MP works like charm, with full audio output, without the
problem mentioned.

i like to believe the problem i have has nothing to do with the midi retrofit.
Hope someone here is able to share where I can start troubleshooting, Thanks in
advance

Peace
Jon

The cause is simply dirt or oxidation in the Hi/Lo/Off switch.

Hi Jonyeo909. Do you say you can hear the filter self resonating at the normal level but the VCO's are quiet?  If that's is the case then the Hi/Lo/off switch wouldn't be the candidate would it Florain?

If the level of everything is low including the filter and I'm reading it wrong then Florain's suggestion is he most likely cause ;)  get some switch cleaner in there and flick the switch back and fourth several times.

The CHD midi should interferer with any of the analogue voice circuits as it only interfaces with the key assigning board which is why we have the stepped pitch wheel implementation so I doubt the kit has anything to do with it but installing it may have exasperated and existing problem to a now noticeable level.

Hi Both,

Appreciate the response.

The filter is not self resonating. When i first discovered the audio being low,
i went through the parameters including the Hi/Low toggle switch, as i tot the
low audio could be deal to these settings, unfortunately not.

When i was at the filter /Resonance section, I set the filter to FULL and
manually sweeps the Resonance , i can hear me sweeping it manually BUT with low
audio output of the VCOs.

Your thoughts ? Thanks in advance

Jon

Hey I was just wondering. Does anyone know how many Mono/Polys korg produced? In
my experience they are often for sale online, so I guess there is a lot around?
How rare are they?

Hi,

I'm moving to Germany from the US and I want to bring my Mono/Poly with me.

Due to the unusual size of the synthesizer I am having a hard time figuring out
the best way to pack it.

A plastic hard-case durable enough to take on the flight is too heavy for the
weight limits.

When you guys bought your Mono/Polys, were they shipped to you and how were they
packed?

You can also email me at ethan.turbek@...

Hi Ethan,

according to the specifications the basic weight is 12 kg. What is is
the weight limit in the plain?

If you want to take it with you in the plain, then I definitely
recommend a case. (I bought a Thomann case for mine. I think the Thoman
case isn't heavier than 5 or 6 kg. Costs: 99 Euros)

If you don't want to use a case for that, then pack it as a double
packed parcel. Example pictures from a Waldorf Microwave:
http://fa.utfs.org/diy/waldorfmicrowave/

* wrap the synth in a lot of bubble wrap,
* put it with a lot of padding into a cardbord box,
* wrap this box again in four or five layers of bubble wrap
* and place this again in a second cardbord box.
* finally tape all corners, edges and slices of the outer box. So the
box cannot get stuck in the transport systems.

Hi,

I live in the UK and I got my MonoPoly from a seller in Romania.

He wrapped the synth very tightly and precisely in bubblewrap (two layers). The
box he shipped it in was sturdy, about 5cms larger than the synth (in all
directions), at each end he packed thick card spacers, under and above the synth
he filled the remaining space with newspaper sheets rolled into balls about the
size of tennis balls.

The synth was "mint" before he shipped it by post, and it still is now!

Hope this helps.

Nick :)

hey new to the group, been lurking for a while :)

I've tried to find a MP in the States for better part of a year without any
luck! Anyone know of one for sale, or have one they wish to part with? It will
go to a good synth loving home.

According to VSE, around 10000 units were produced.

There's been one on NYC's craigslist for a long while. He started at 1750 and recently brought the asking price down to 1500. You could ask Ko Otake (?) of Modeless Factory, a japanese tech who sells refurbished Korgs, Rolands, and Yamahas.

Good luck! It's a nice synth.

As the KLM-376-MP card is broken in my MP4 I need to get a "new" one or any one who can restore my.

So anyone have one for sale?
