My wavedrum has a Remo Fiberskin on it. It sounds great to me, and it is
fairly bright and resonant. I have been thinking for a long time to get a
real calfskin head for it. I'm a jazz kit drummer most of the time, and my
head of choice for snares is an Earthtone genuine calfskin head. It sounds
really really good with brushes on a snare drum, and its wonderfully dark
and colorful. The sound really comes alive when I use my hands with the
snares off. They use some kind of special coating on the skin to keep the
environmental effects on tuning to a minimum, but it certainly varies day to
day. Not a problem for me since I tune the drum everytime I play. I
actually really like taking it out of the bag and working with whatever the
drum gives me that day.
I would suggest getting a "snare side" head for the wavedrum since its quite
a bit thinner - that might match the intended design better. I'd never use
one on a snare drum though because I don't think its quite thin enough for a
good snare side sound.

If you get one of these, PLEASE do us a favor and record a before and after
sample on a few patches. I would love to hear what you think regardless...

Mine (bought at a Tokyo music store just as Korg had discontinued them) came
with a coated
batter head of some sort, probably Remo. Not great for hand drumming. I changed
it to a
Fiberskin right away. You also mentioned in your first post about some folks
using real skin
on a WaveDrum. Definitely the first time I've heard of that. I don't think it'd
be such a great
idea though... As I'm sure you know, real skin expands and contracts
considerably with the
temperature/humidity. I can imagine it might well damage the drum in some way if
it
contracted too much...
Hi Gareth, Samm Bennett here. I too use the WaveDrum primarily as a hand
percussion
instrument. I find that many of the best features and expressivity of the
instrument are
brought out with the hands: pitch bend especially.
Anyway, I use a REMO fiber-skin head, which I think feels pretty good. As you
probably know,
it's the type of head Remo uses on all it's hand drums like djembes, frame
drums, etc. I don't
think there's anything else out there that will feel as comfortable and
"skin-like" as the fiber-
skins.
Hi Guys,
Just about to get my hands on a wavedrum and I was wondering about the
relative merits of different drum skins. I'll be playing almost
exclusively with my hands being a djembe/darbuka player. I've heard of
one person fitting an animal skin to the thing but are there
alternatives? I'm looking for an organic feel/tone 3d'd out into
psychedelic musical space/time.

Hello,
My name is Rodrigo and I've recently started
eyeballing the wavedrum.
I've been stripping down my drumset and replacing
things with homemade and/or other things in the last
few years. Right now its down to a 3 piece kit(snare,
kick, floortom), HH, Ride, a roland SPD-S, and a
homemade string instrument type thing on the side.
The snare and the floor tom both have had piezo
elements added etc.. etc.
I've even gone so far as to make my own cymbal out of
stainless steel(months of hammering on the weekends).
I'm considering adding something like the wavedrum to
my kit, but for as much as I've looked on line, I have
not come accross any sounds of the actual thing.
If anyone can point me to some sound clips, or even
better, video clips of one in action, I'd greatly
appreciate it.
Also, I gather it's very difficult to find/purchase
one. How much do they go for? How long did it take to
get yours? etc..
Many thanks,
Rodrigo Constanzo

Wow I'm surprised y'all here didn't know this...It's true your wavedrum should
kick out a
thunderous bit of noise - this is an intentional feature!
It's 5am, you've been thumping, smacking, warping the head all night, you're
hands are
throbbing, time to sleep..now leave the drum on, crank up the volume knob and
sail off
into a wavedrum trance.
It's kinda like holding a seashell to your ear.
only louder and more expensive and prettier.
greetings wavedrummies,...
Jon found my drum [and me] and brought us in from the cold for a visit!
I'm gearing up [well, gearing 'down' sadly] to sell my wavedrum. three months of
rain
humidi-fried much of my livelihood [wavey and friends were NOT here
fortunately], so I
gotta lighten the ship to stay afloat. but hey if I get a boost and somebody
gets their drum
it just means abundance all around!
I've put some pictures here in the empty photo area. If this is not ok I'll put
them
elsewhere and post a link. I'm very pleased to announce what is not pictured
here - the
RE1 programmer...As I found one just today [yeah!] and it's on the road to me
now...
Aside from that, I was and I guess am still sacrificing her to ebay later this
week, but who
knows? Questions & comments are welcome. I'll stop by frequently while I'm in
your

I didn't notice this at all yet. But I have noticed a few things about the
audio output:
-huge bass on some patches, you really need to turn the bass down for
certain patches. I'm thinking about using a multi-band compression and a
tiny bit of reverb on the output before sending it to the mains.
-major feedback problems with the internal microphone if you're well
amplified - I would guess this makes live use pretty tricky in a loud
situation. It has to be treated similar to an acoustic guitar or
something - I'm sure it can be dealt with.
I use the mackie SRM450's in my house and in a smallish room with wood
floors, if I crank it, I have feedback problems - but it really sounds great
to my ear.
Jon
HI,
i am still 2 days in this group, not much members here but i don#t care
about this, sometimes it's better to have only 8 active members instead
of 10-000 people who write no single message into the group..
Welcome dude.. ! Congratulations for buying the Wavedrum, I am
interested, too but I think it's really to expensive but sounds really
great, i love that thing...!
Well, german instruction, nice, i am a german! :D

Hi all,
I'm a new member too. I just bought a Wavedrum on ebay. I was looking for it
since a long time, even if I'm not a percussionist.
I haven't had the time to explore it fully yet, I just played with it a bit, but
I really love the instrument, I've got the same fellings I had when I tried it
when it came out (about 10 years ago)!
I do have the original patch list, so I'll scan it as soon as I have a little
bit of time (it took me six days or so just to find a little bit of time to
write these message so I could introduce myself to the list, sp please be
patient).
In the meantime, thanks to John for the group creation and especially for the
English manual; the manual included with my unit is in German!!!
I also bought an RE1 editor because I'm really interested in creating and
editing sounds. It would be nice to exchange such creation on the list (MIDI sys
ex dumps? written parameters? I still have to go through the manual).
Regarding my instrument, I noticed that its audio output is a little bit noisy,
compared to my other electronic instruments. I can definitively hear hum on its
audio channel and an occasional intermittent noise at (mostly) regular time
intervals. Also, if I keep the volume pot at the maximum level, the sound
distorts inside the unit. I'm wondering if this is a normal behaviour or if it's
an indication of a faulty unit; what can you tell about this?

Jon,
thanx for the answer. I really get in love with this Wavedrum. I talked
to Korg Germany yesterday if there continued in an other System the
Synthesis and they told me, yes and no, the synthesis is in the Oasys,
Z1, Prophecy and in the Electribes A + R, too. But a bit different to
the Wavedrum. It's really a shame that they didn't continued this great
thing.
About Ebay, as I sayed, more then $2000 Euros is really much for an old
Instruments like this one, really old...! But maybe I get in touch
someday with some.
With recording some examples for me, Jon, make me really happy. Would
be great, thanx...!
by the way, the Clavia g2 is not that expensive, you can get the small
Version for 999 Euro's and yes, there is a little demo on the Clavia
Website with some little Drums example in a Trailer Sond and at the
end, there are Drums similar to the Wavedrum...
Here is the link... http://www.clavia.se/G2/G2_teaser.mp3

Well there's a japanese place that almost always has some used ones in stock, selling for $4000 or so. I looked for a wave drum for about 6 years and didn't have enough money, but everything I saw was around $3000 and selling fast. I eventually saved the bread and bought mine for a but under $3000 and its been really great. If you can get one for $1500 that would seem like a very good price... cheaper than a nord modular around here.

Hi Frank-
Yeah its a little quiet here, but then again there's only a few people on
the list. When I bought my wavedrum a few months back, I was amazed that
there was very little information out there about it other than reviews on
harmony central. I really wanted to clean up the .pdf manual and make it
available on the web, so I started the group. I've heard there were about
3000 of these drums made, so there must be other people out there...
Hopefully, from time to time there is meaningful discussion on the group.
I wanted to start up some discussion about favorite patches, tips and
tricks. I'll throw the question out there again - does anyone have access
to a scanner and an original patch listing? I'll volunteer to enter it into
the public database on this group so that we can share notes/tips on our
favorite patches. I did this with my microkorg synth, and I've been very
happy that I did it.
Jon

prices! I thought the going price was around $3000 or so (I guess it

Sorry Samm - I got confused, I bought mine form a different guy, Sammy
Merendino (who I think has either joined the list or is about to). He had
two at the time and sold one to me.

Yeah, you pretty much have to keep your head up and look for someone selling
a used one. A guy in Australia emailed me claiming to have two brand new
units in the box which he bought when a music store went out of buissness,
but hasn't gotten back to me since I mailed him back (a few months back).

hmmm.
Jon
hi Jon! So, you're new to the WaveDrum, eh? Pretty great instrument,
eh? Your mail reads like this:
"I only got my wavedrum just a couple of months back (from Samm -
also on this list)"
which kinda sounds like you got your drum from me. If only I had
enough WaveDrums to go selling some of 'em off! I've only got one,
and I sure would like to get my hands on a 2nd unit. The thought of
my WaveDrum dying on me (or getting stolen, or whatever) without a
backup to take it's place... well, it's pretty scary! But, as you all
probably know, these things are scarce as hen's teeth. Even Analog
Japan, a company here in Tokyo that had a couple of WaveDrums for
sale for awhile (some months back) are now out of stock. And they
were asking 3500 bucks for them!
Which brings me to one question: anybody know exactly how many Korg
made? I'd love to know...
As far as the patch listing, I don't have anything like that. As far
as I can recall, mine just came with the manual...
Does anyone have an original patch listing that shipped with the unit? In
the manual it says that the patch listing has the original values on it for
decay and tune. I would love to get my hands on a copy of this listing.
If anyone would be willing to scan it and post it in the files section that
would be really cool! I contacted KorgUSA and didn't get a response about
this (although they did get me a .pdf of the original manual)
One thing that I would like to do for the list is to set up a database on
the yahoo group with each patch listed so that we can all enter patch
specific tips and tricks to share. I've already started keeping notes on a
few of my favorite patches and I'm sure all you have cool ideas too.
Anyway, I'd volunteer to enter all the patch names and tune/decay values to
get this started if anyone can scan or send me a copy of the patch list.

Nice to meet you George - I am checking out your site now - nice remixes!
I only got my wavedrum just a couple of months back (from Samm - also on
this list) but I haven't had a single problem at all. I was reading on the
harmony central reviews that someone said the internal batteries are only
supposed to last about 10 years (which is up around now I 'spose). I guess
we'll cross that bridge if we come to it. My guess is that it won't be too
hard to replace, but all the internal tweaks in the machine would be lost -
just a guess though.
Glad to see you all here-
Jon

hi, flapjax here, known as Samm Bennett in most other walks of life.
I've been working with the Wavedrum for several years now: in fact,
it's become one of my main instruments. Just curious about something:
has anyone ever had any problems with their drum? Major or minor?
Myself, I've never had any problem/malfunction of any kind, ever.
Knock on wood!
Hello!
At this point, I have just finished setting up the wavedrum group.
If you're reading this, hopefully you've just finished subscribing to
the group. Welcome!
This'll probably be a bit of a slow process, since there are only so
many wavedrums out in the world, so getting the word out will take
time. So please be an active recruiter for this list. It'll be a
much better community if we can attract as many wavedrummer users as
we can find.
I've already scoured the web for potential members and sent emails to
the folks whose email addresses I could find on the web. If you know
anyone else who plays (or has played) a wavedrum, pass the word along.
While you're here, check out a few things I put in the files section:
*a coupla mp3 files of loops I did using the wavedrum (set your
player to repeat for full effect)
*.pdf files for the manual (Korg USA emailed me a .pdf file with lots
of out of order pages, and some upside down, ect. I cleaned it up
and made it into shorter sections for easy downloading)
So there you have it. I'm looking forward to learning a lot from
everyone who eventually shows up here. Hopefully together we can all
benefit from the creative energy inherent in a group like this.
We're a bunch of musicians who've discovered this rare and incredibly
cool instrument, and I'm guessing that we all have a unique creative
direction which both drives and is driven by our use of the Korg
Wavedrum.
Cheers!
Jon
