Boise Experimental Music Festival (BEMF) UPDATE #2: DID YOU KNOW?

DID YOU KNOW that BEMF will feature unusual instruments such as the theremin, battery powered fan, quarter tone trumpet, glockenspiel, omnichord, and notebook computer? Yes indeed, the theremin isn't something you hear everyday, unless you're into B-rated science fiction movies from the 1950's, but "She Blows Neon" (a.k.a. AlejAndro Anastasio) will give you a taste of this elusive and difficult to play instrument, showing that it's not just for emulating cheesy space faring vehicles.

You'll be surprised at how many performers at the festival use notebook computers to alter the tone of their instruments or generate completely new and unique electronic sounds with special software. Gretchen Jude will perform only with her voice and the notebook computer...and this ain't Enya, that's for sure...you'll have to hear it to believe it!

And what this quarter tone trumpet? Jeff Kaiser (with Ted Killian on guitar) will reveal the character of this interesting horn with their far out, improvisational and avant-garde music.

Elijah Jensen (with Bonefish Sam and his Power Orchestra) will be playing the onnichord (a bizarre electronic, autoharp-like instrument, and the glockenspiel, which oddly enough isn't a new form of German sausage, but similar to a xylophone and a lot more interesting.

And last, but not least, Rick Walker will surprise us all with a variety of "found sound" instruments, the battery powered fan just scratching the surface of possibilities. Whatever the case, his performance will be world-class and shatter listeners' conceptions of what making music is all about!
