This is a sneak preview to my personal and professional email distribution list on the planning of the Boise Experimental Music Festival (BEMF). The next major communication will be the event's official press release in April. I will be working with the Visual Arts Collective to craft this press release and get it out to the media.
The bulk of the planning for the festival is now complete, which includes the following:
The Boise Experimental Music Festival (BEMF) is a first-of-its-kind event for Boise and the surrounding TreasureValley. This program features twelve creative music performances that fall into the experimental, avant-garde, or free improvisation music genres. The festival will provide a new and exciting experience to Boise’s music and art enthusiasts by bringing together a unique community of musicians and artists, integrating music performance with short experimental film and video, graphics art, and performance art. The Boise Experimental Music Festival will be held at the Visual Arts Collective gallery, Boise’s premiere venue for unique art forms that push the boundaries of imagination.

This should be interesting. Elijah and I have never met in person before.
This will be my last free improv performance for a while....

I start a new jazz trio gig tomorrow evening (Monday) at 6:30pm at the Milky Way restaurant down town Boise, with Vincent Miresse on congas and cajon, and Jamie Vink on upright bass. And of course, I'm on the geetar. We'll be there every Monday, so come on down and join us for dinner and/or cocktails.
...and yes, I have been known to play something other than off-the-wall avant-garde and experimental real-time looping music! But it's been a while, so don't ask me to play Cherokee or Giant Steps quite yet...yikes! :)
Come down and let us mess with your minds with a most bizarre and avant-garde flavor of free improv music. I guarantee, you've never heard anything like this at the Bouquet before: 100% real-time and free-improv looping with the guitar and computer-generated electronics, plus electronic and acoustic drums.
Cheers,
Kris

I am excited to announce my fifth CD release, which is a special collaboration project that represents the talent and diversity of the International looping community. This is the official release of Xperimentus!
Xperimentus is a series of compositions by me and 13 other musicians from the International Looper’s Delight discussion group and community. Each composition is a duo composed virtually and in collaboration over the internet by me and these amazingly creative and awe-inspiring musicians from the U.S., Belgium, Norway, Italy, UK, and Germany. Xperimentus is a unique blend of personalities and multiple playing styles that fuses electronic, experimental, and avant-garde music into a delightful collage of music art.
"Magic Cosmic Sounds - With Xperimentus, Krispen Hartung has incredibly woven together a disparate array of cosmic sounds into one magic carpet sure to take you on a ride through the astral plane. This collaboration of global musicians is surprisingly cohesive considering the method in which it was created, mostly through virtual cooperation with 13 other musicians. The songs on this disc seem to arise from the ether and spill forth a delicious series of notes that mesmerize the listener then slip back suddenly into the dimension from which they came." - Michelle Morris (Writer and Photographer)

1st Annual Boise Festival for Experimental Music Spring '06
Mission Statement
The purpose of this music festival is to 1) promote and educate experimental and avant-garde music in the Boise and surrounding Treasure Valley, 2) provide an annual venue for local experimental musicians to express their art amongst their peers and potential experimental music enthusiasts, and 3) foster local artistic diversity, awareness, and fair representation of unusual and avant-garde forms of art.
Traditionally, the Boise and surrounding Treasure Valley has been a predominantly conservative-minded area in the Northwest, and this mindset tends manifest itself in the types of music that become the focal points for music listeners and the media. This mindset is of no fault of the Boise community, but is a natural consequence (to name a just few sources) of the demographics of the area, the geographical location of Boise in the Northwest, economic pressures on venue owners to cater to public taste, and the overall philosophies of those who promote and foster musical diversity in the area. As a result, with exception of an occasional world-fusion, art rock, looping, or out-of-state performance, the music scene in Boise has evolved to be somewhat monolithic from a genre perspective, fostering and continuing to foster styles of music such as country, pop, classic and modern rock, traditional jazz, punk, folk/folk-rock, and classical. This is not to say that there are no radical experimental musicians in Boise; rather, there simply aren't ample opportunities for them to perform, gather, and share their art.
The 1st Annual Boise Experimental Music Festival is just one of many potential vehicles that serve to proactively and Positively supplement Boise's artistic cultural diversity. It is a focused and collaborative effort to celebrate a music genre that is very much alive and thriving in cities around the globe, and has been in existence in various forms since the 1950's.
I played my last performance of the year last Saturday, that is, unless some venue proactively calls me and wants me to fill in a slot. With all the gigs and music related activities I've been involved with this summer, I decided to take a breather until the new year.
In the mean time, here are some updates and re-communications of important announcements.

1. Y2K5 International Live Looping Festival (USA 2005)a Success!
This international festival is complete and was a great success thanks to Rick Walker, who organizes this event in Santa Cruz, CA each year. In addition to playing at the event, I was able to stream the entire weekend of performers to the web in real-time to our peers all over the world, plus record a handful of artists. To view more details of the event, including who played, you can visit the website here: http://www.loopfestival.com/y2k5
In addition, here are the recordings I have uploaded for download so far:
If you haven't checked it out, my new solo CD "Descent to Self" is now released and available for sale locally at the Record Exchange and online at CD Baby. Plus you can download the whole CD in MP3 format for free. Here are the details:
Descent to Self is a musical and introspective exploration of ideas inspired by themes such as theoretical physics, science fiction, mathematics, and philosophy. By means of real-time looping technology, Krispen Hartung weaves an avant-garde and improvisational tapestry of sounds that are colorful, innovative, and mood provoking. This instrumental work showcases Hartung's ability to fuse avant-garde jazz, experimental, and ambient music into a multifaceted musical experience.
Krispen Hartung - Acoustic & electric guitars, real-time looping, tone mangling, and computer composition
"Awe inspiring. The atmospheric bed you laid is a hauntingly beautiful foundation for some emotionally charged guitar fx. A blissfully meditative piece. Great guitar work and improvisational skills!" - Valkir
"Really very good. The guitar solo part is fantastic, you really sound like you are an accomplished player. Was not expecting to like this as usually try to avoid the guitar but was pleasantly surprised." - DRT
"Ok this is STUNNING I'm speechless. What can you say BUT JUST EXCELLENT. Too many things here to complement. Talented to the MAX. Cheers." - Kat Speel
3. Upcoming Release: Xperimentus!
On Jan 1, 2006, I will release a new collaboration CD titled "Xperimentus: Krispen Hartung & Friends".
Xperimentus is a series of experimental and avant-garde compositions by Krispen Hartung and 13 other musicians from the international Looper’s Delight discussion group and community. Each composition is a duo composed virtually and in collaboration over the internet by Hartung and these amazingly creative and awe-inspiring musicians. Xperimentus is a unique blend of personalities and multiple playing styles that fuses ambient, experimental, and avant-garde music into a delightful collage of music art.
4. Live Performances Streamed to the Web
Well, I was partially correct above. I do plan to stream a few live performances to the web from my home studio, between now and the new year. I'll send details out on these, and I will likely be having some folks sit in with me to...surprise, guess local artists!
5. The First Annual Boise Festival of Experimental Music
Yes, I am an over-achiever, and playing gigs here and out of state/town just isn't enough! I am in the initial planning stages of something that I hope will make musical history in Boise, ID. My plans are to coordinate and host Boise's First Annual Festival of Experimental Music in the Spring '06 timeframe. I will be securing a venue this month, and then distributing flyers all over town as a call to experimental musicians to come out of the woodwork and submit their demos for review. I have 2-3 artists that are already interested in playing, and even a few out of state experimental and veteran artists that may potentially headline the event. Tentatively, my plans are to have 8-10 artists showcase their experimental music approach over the course of 2 weekend afternoons/evenings, plus get someone from our local university's music department to give a brief lecture on the history of experimental, avant-garde, and electronic music. I may have some other surprises as well. More on this later....
6. My Email Distribution List (for performance, CD, and music related announcements)
If you want to officially get on my Yahoo Groups distribution list, you can visit the site here and join:
Finally, a non-music related update. Our twins are doing great and will be 6 months old on November 5! Wow...time flies. Here are some pictures of them, Kyra (girl) and Tristan (boy):

For those of you who weren't able to make one of my two web-based performances on August 17, I recorded both sessions and uploaded them for your listening pleasure. I used the following gear setup for these performances: http://www.boisemusicians.com/gear.htm
Note: Somewhere in these sound clips there is a VST software glitch, but I wasn’t able to find it to edit it out…it sounds like a fluttering electronic disturbance. If you are able to find it, please let me know which song and time. Thanks.
These performances were an interesting experience. Performing alone in my basement home studio, yet having others listening to me virtually and providing feedback via instant messenger created an interesting dynamic and feeling that I haven't experienced before. I am very pleased with these performances and look forward to doing more.
Availability: The performance will be limited to 30 listening seats, so it is a first come first serve basis (if you can't get in, keep trying in case someone drops out)

I'd like to report on the progress of two exciting, upcoming looping and improvisational CDs.
The first project is my new solo CD, entitled "Descent to Self." Here is the preliminary project description, which will undergo some minor modifications and refinements:
"Descent to Self is a musical exploration of ideas inspired by themes such as theoretical physics, science fiction, mathematics, and philosophy. By means of real-time looping technology, Krispen Hartung weaves an avant-garde and improvisational tapestry of sounds that are colorful, innovative, and mood provoking. This instrumental work showcases Hartung's ability to fuse avant-garde jazz, experimental, and ambient music into a multi-faceted musical experience."
The CD is a mixture of improvised and computer-based studio compositions, jam packed with 17 songs and almost 80 minutes of music. It will release and go on sale physically in the November or December timeframe. However, I have decided to pre-release the CD now in digital format only. You can view the CD artwork, download/play the entire CD in MP3 format here: http://www.krispenhartung.com/descent (how do you like the high resolution image my retina? Thanks to Idaho Eyecare Center for that one!)
The second project I am leading is entitled "Xperimentus" and is so exciting and mind blowing that I can't even contain myself. Here is the preliminary project description, which will also undergo modifications and refinements:
"Xperimentus is a series of experimental and avant-garde duo compositions by Krispen Hartung and 13 other musicians from the international Looper’s Delight discussion group and community. Each composition is a duo composed virtually and in collaboration over the internet by Hartung and these amazingly creative and awe-inspiring musicians."
The members of this project are as follows:
Krispen Hartung (USA) - Acoustic & electric guitars, sitar, sound engineering, and project management David Coffin (USA) - Guitar Benoit Ruelle (Belgium) - bass, guitar, keys and a bit of drums Simeon Harris (UK) - Guitar Paul Mimlitsch (USA) - Guitar Mark Francombe (Norway) - Guitar Fabio Anile (Italy) - Keyboard, Electronics Tony K (USA) - Guitar, Bass, Mandolin, Synths, Bongos, Electronic Drums Clint Allen (USA) - Chapman Stick, Bass, Guitar Sony Felberg (USA, Seattle) - Found Sound composer/ACID Ted Killian (USA) - Guitar Scott Hansen (USA) - Guitar Vincent Miresse (USA) - Didjeridu, percussion Rainer Thelonius Balthasar Straschill (Germany) - keys, bits of electric (bass) guitar and saxophone, whimsical electronics
Pending: Sheila Olson and Max Valentino
This CD will also go on sale in the November of December timeframe, and I will be consulting with the group on whether we will pre-release it digitally. We are currently over 60% done with the CD and the results so far are out of this world. It has been an astronomical privilege for me to collaborate with the above players in a virtual environment, integrate our playing styles, etc. I expect, or at least hope that this CD will be received well among our peers.
Now that I have the technology figured out and tested, I have decided to stream at least one web-based performance (WBP) a month from my home studio, and more if I'm not streaming my live gigs at WI-FI enabled venues. Also look out for some of my fellow musicians from Boise, Idaho (USA) sitting in with me in a performance in the near future!
Here are the details of my first pair of official improvisational looping WBPs!
"Looper's Lunch" and "Lights Out with Looping" Web-Based Performances

Users can listen to SHOUTcast on a variety of platforms and players (e.g. Windows Media Player, MusicMatch, etc). Recommended players are as follows:
Hello all,
I just completed an absolutely arduous and emotional draining
project to categorize 70 of my live and studio looping MP3s (many
with Vincent Miresse) by 19 different fields or data points. I
created a Microsoft Excel tool where potential listeners can search
for my music by filtering with the following fields:
Song Title, Duration, Size, CD, Buy CD Link, Download Link, Type of
Recording, Genre/Style 1, Genre/Style 2, Genre/Style 3, Recording
Date, Venue, Musicians / Instruments, Temp, Mood/Feel 1, Mood/Feel
2, Mood/Feel 3, Mood/Feel 4, Mood/Feel 5
So, if you get a chance give the tool a try, kick the tires, drive
it around the block, and tell me what you think. Try filtering on
one of the Mood/Feel fields and then getting more granular with the
four other Mood/Feel fields. See if the songs that results from your
filter seem at all described by the Mood/Feel descriptors. And if a
particular song brings up a mood for you that you think is more
accurate than those I have listed, then by all means let me know,
and I'll make the change. This part of the tool is "living" and
will undergo many revisions as I gather more feedback and listen to
my music again. And if you have some better ideas on the genres for
some songs, I am entirely open to these suggestions as well.
Finally, if you can think of any other fields that would be useful,
I am open to adding those. In short, I am open to any suggestions
for improvement.
I will eventually start filling in the comments section of the tool
as well.
The tool is accessible in three formats:
Interactive HTM File: http://www.boisemusicians.com/mp3_Sort.htm (be
sure to widen the columns so that when you filter you can see all
the text in one line, especially useful for the
Musicians/Instruments field)
XML File: http://www.boisemusicians.com/mp3.xml
The Source Excel File (for Microsoft Users):
http://www.boisemusicians.com/mp3.xls
NOTE: When you click on a download link, the resulting page will
allow you to download the song by clicking on the song title, or you
can stream it from the server with the link below it.
Cheers,

Hello folks -
I have a couple brief announcements...
First, the CD by me and Vincent Miresse, "Live at the Kulture
Klatsch," is now available on CD Baby, one of the world's most
popular online retail sites for independent musicians. This version
of the CD includes a full color 4-panel sleeve, color CD face, plus
a double-sided color tray insert. In short, it is the best version
of this CD we have to offer. You can check out our CD Baby page and
new CD/duo description here:
http://cdbaby.com/cd/krispen2
If you already have this CD, which I know some of you do, please
consider going to the above site and submitting a review. We would
really appreciate it, and it would help our CD sales in the long
run! :)
Second, one of these days Vinnie and I will get around to producing
our second CD (as soon as I get two other new CDs out the door by
this December), but in the mean time I have been posting the sound
clips of our live performances on my website here:
http://www.boisemusicians.com/hartung&miresse/ (just click on the
link "Listen to New Live Sound Clips!")
Some of you who were at these performance may even remember some of
the tunes. These clips are the raw improvisational deal - mistakes,
imperfections and glitches included. On one song, you can even hear
a jet flying overhead at the end of the tune….yeah, I called that
tune "Jet"...really original, man. :)
Cheers,
Kris
