Well, I guess I'd better get busy and go listen
to Der Kuhhandel! Anyway, I would guess that Die
B"urgschaft is closer in style to Der Kuhhandel because of
the time in which it was written (I hear some
correspondences with the 7 Deadly Sins in Die B"urgschaft, for
instance). However, Die B"urgschaft is very definitely opera
(i.e., almost entirely sung), not an operetta such as
Der Kuhhandel.<br><br>--John

Hello, Sergei-great to have you join us! It's
been a while since I got anything "new" of Weill's
("new" as in rarely heard), but I shall be happy to
check out Die Burgschaft...Musically, is it closer to
Der Kuhhaendel, or Der Zar lasst sich
photographieren?<br><br>Tis important-I like my basic melodic Weill basically
melodic...eh, a philistine...<br><br> Best regards...Sanya

I was wowed by Anne Sophie von Otter's Weill
album with John Eliot Gardiner (DG). It includes the
best version of Die sieben Tods"unden I've every
heard. Why? Because it is all sung, and beautifully, as
opposed to half spoken in the manner of Lenya or Gisela
May.<br><br>However, Otter's singing is not unduly "operatic"--her
delivery of Berlin _and_ Broadway theater songs on the
same CD is very effective.

Hi! Brand new member here. I was happy to find a
Weill club. Thanks to the boss for creating
it!<br><br>I sing bass with the Riverside Choral Society, a
choir which participated in the Wall-to-Wall Weill
celebration. We did some of the same works performed that day
on our concert May 13. Check our website
(<a href=http://www.riversidechoral.org/concerts.html
target=new>http://www.riversidechoral.org/concerts.html</a>) for a listing of
the program and a link to the
program notes I wrote for the concert.<br><br>Anyway, I
just wanted to alert you all to a wonderful "new" work
by Weill. I have a friend at the Kurt Weill
Foundation who sent me an advance copy of a new EMI CD of
Weill's 1930 opera _Die_B"urgschaft_, as recorded at last
summer's Spoleto USA festival in Charleston, SC. This is
such amazingly wonderful music, I can't stop listening
to it! And the total effect of the music and the
drama is devastating--social consciousness with a big
heart. I also loved reading Kim Kowalke's notes in the
CD booklet (I'm so sorry his book
_Kurt_Weill_in_Europe_ is out-of-print--at least you can still check it
out from the library).<br><br>Anyway, I look forward
to more Weill posts. I'll try to make sure future
postings from me won't be this long!

I have Punishing Kiss now!!!!<br><br>I bought it
last night (Tuesday).<br><br>I am fairly impressed
with it, actually. Nick Cave's song, of course, is the
best... but the only song that actually disappointed me
was... now get this... the lone Weill/Brecht song! Tango
Ballad was really badly done.<br><br>Aside from that...

Well then you saw one of the highlights of the
evening; I thought John Mauceri was really splendid once
he got warmed up, although Judy Kaye was a bit too
Broadway for my liking. Of the females, Mary Cleere Haran
was in very good voice, especially on Speak Low, and
Melissa Errico was a terrific surprise on That's Him;
much more elegant than just about everyone else around
her (note to Angelina Reaux: Go shopping!)<br>Ivy
Austin also did a nice job with The Saga of
Jenny.<br><br>Ivy had to use music, unfortunately but
understandably, as did almost everyone else in the War and Peace
segment. Karen Kohler did a particularly beautiful Was
Bekam Des Soldaten Weib and Wie Lange Noch (which I
thought I'd never heard of, but turns out to be a lyric
rewrite of Je Ne t'aime Pas, another pleasant surprise!).
Moreover, Karen didn't use any music, and she looked
smashing in a black (purple?) sheath. For a no-name
talent, she came across most professionally of
all.<br><br>Ute is a real entertainer. She looked slightly
kitschy in her flapper fringes (but a lot better than
Reaux!), but she did her two numbers beautifully. Alabama
Song fit perfectly in her range. Interestingly, she
performed off program.<br><br>Among the men, I just love
everything The Hudson Shad do, and they had a lot of fun
with some of the Broadway tunes. The best moment for
any male in the whole program was I thought Dirk
Weiler doing Bilbao Song. It was positively brilliant,
with just the right Brectian irony/alienation. I
almost cried, however, when Mauceri and Co. backed up
Weill himself singing That's Him from an old recording
at the end of the program. He just sounded so
sweet.<br><br>BTW, I won't be able to catch Ute at Town Hall, but I
was just there to see the MAC Awards, and that was
fun. Julie Wilson is a Goddess. Also, I'm still
computerless, but my SO may be getting one for working at home,
so maybe soon! Best all around!<br><br>In haste,
<br><br>Maria

I got the tapes, Sanya! Thanks a lot. They are
thoroughly interesting. Randy Newman sang for the Toy Story
movies, didn't he? It's a fairly distinguishable voice,
and my brother owns the film. He was sitting there
watching it this morning, and I was shocked to hear Randy
Newman's voice doing the theme song, "You've Got a Friend
in Me" or some such thing.<br><br>The Tiger Lillies
are great, too. I am all psyched up to see them on
April 26th - 30th when Shockheaded Peter comes to
Toronto.<br><br>AND the card was very nice too.<br><br>Thanks

Well. Just heard it, and only once...and I'm
disappointed. Sure, there are a few songs I like (Waits most of
all), but the...the STYLE of the thing upset me. No, I
DIDN'T like the whatchamacallit space-age arrangements!
And even her voice-which, truth be told, is an
acquired taste: thin, edgy, piercing, but so right on the
her two Weill CDs, for example-struck me as
especially grating in these pieces... But then, I didn't
hold onto her disc of Michael Newman songs either...
But then, I LIKE City of Strangers...<br><br>Anybody
else's reactions?

all these groups intertwine...See, I've never had a
