Subject: Questions about LA area opportunities

Hi Everybody,

I'm an amateur bass singer who does a capella singing in
Shape Note singings and also occasionally in church quartets or
congregationally on those occasions when the pianist fails to
show up.

I have a couple of questions that maybe members of this listserv
could answer (only #3 is strictly a capella):

(1) "Messiah From Scratch" concerts

Where in the LA area are there occasions for audience-
participation in singing Handel's "Messiah"?

(2) Church hymn sings

Is there e.g. a listserv or other source that informs members of
hymn singing opportunities in the LA area?

It used to be that churches would have one night a week when
they just sang hymns. Now that's very rare. But maybe once a
week there is some church somewhere in LA area that does
this. (For instance, at least one G.A.R.B.C. church in LA area will
host a "Singspiration" once a month.)

(3) Sight-singing books

I have tune-books at home, but nothing that teaches sight-
singing per say. Can anyone recommend a good series of
graded exercises?

Thanks In Advance,

David Olson

Hi there gang,

Well, December 16th found this broadcaster again alone in the studio for the second time in four weeks as my guest co-host, Murray Natkie, the Tenor of Scarred For Life, was at home in "quarantine" from a whooping cough scare in the "home-schooled" population in Hunterdon County.  Murray is OK now and we are looking forward to hearing him on the air at another time in the future.

This was our third week of the Holiday season and we were able to bring to the airwaves many of the songs of the season.  We are so pleased to be celebrating our 8th Holiday Season with our listeners and we are thankful for those artists who have provided their music to the Netowrk for broadcast to you.

Seeking Enthusiastic Singers For New Group

I'm a British acappella singer and arranger, just arrived in LA to join my
American wife. I led a successful choir in London covering 60s - 80s pop and
plan to start a similar group here, provisionally entitled THE HIT CHARADES. So
far my arrangements include songs by the Supremes, Carpenters, Abba, Human
League, Whitney Houston and Madonna.

I love doing this just for the fun of it but also want to get some paid gigs so
I'm looking for a dedicated group of 9 or 10 singers, male and female. Each
person would have the opportunity to perform solos as well as being a vital part
of the group. Professional training and experience would be helpful, a love of
classic pop songs is essential.

If you have a good voice which is currently underemployed please write and let
me know what you can do. I already have a number of interested people but could
do with more, especially basses and sopranos. A first meeting/audition in La
Crescenta has been fixed for Tuesday 11th January 2005 so get in touch soon!

Dear Fans of The Mighty Echoes,

Firstly, news about an exciting performance at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills on Friday, February 4.  The Mighty Echoes will be opening for the legendary Grass Roots. Should be a great evening!  Doors open at 6 and The Mighty Echoes perform a 45 minute set at about 7:45 PM.

We have an allotment of tickets available at $20 each. If you get them from us it not only helps us but  saves you booking fees.  Let me know by e-mail and we’ll take it from there.

Also, please take a moment to vote for the Mighty Echoes as best Doo Wop Group in the A Cappella Community Awards.

Votes can be cast by filling out the online form at http://www.casa.org/cara/aca/home.php. Each individual can only vote once, but you're more than welcome to get as many people as you can to vote... in fact, please do! It's our hope that these awards will be a truly accurate representation of what the greater a cappella community is thinking.

Voting to determine the favorites of 2004 is open from January 1, 2005 until February 1, 2005, and the winners will be announced on March 1, 2005.

We’ve finished recording our new album, the first with new Mighty Echo, John Lathan. Stay tuned for more info.

Best Wishes to all our fans for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2005,

Harvey

Dear Fans,

I am writing to inform you that Alpha Voices will be performing at
the Jazz Bakery on Sunday February 13, 2005 from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00
P.M. The concert will also feature performances from Sixth Wave and
this year Los Angeles Regional champs.

Alpha Voices will be touring in Los Angeles during mid February.
Our agenda will include: several concerts, educational workshops,
and hosting the upcoming Los Angeles Harmony Sweepstakes. Please
visit our webpage for more info. (www.alphavoices.com)

For the Jazz Bakery concert, we will team up with another celebrated
vocal band: Sixth Wave (2001 Harmony Sweepstakes National
Champions). In addition, we are offering the upcoming champions the
opportunity to open the concert for us. Los Angeles vocal
championship will be held the day before our gig at the Jazz Bakery.
So, our plan is to reunite three vocal bands, the very best of the
best (2001, 2004, 2005)…of pure vocal Jazz. It will be cool for the
Sweeps audience to watch a full concert with this year and last year
champs the day after the competition!!!

rehearse in Van Nuys on Mondays, sometimes Thursdays, sometime Sunday nights.
We
aim to rehearse once or twice a week.

If this might be you, please call soon - we aren't going to spend a long time
auditioning
people, as we need someone right away.

Please forward this email to anyone you feel might be interested. Thank you!

We still have some tickets for the Grassroots/ Mighty Echoes show at the Canyon Club in Agoura on Friday, Feb 4. They are $20 each. Please e-mail us if you'd like some.

We hear that many of you have had trouble voting for us in The Community A Cappella Awards. Go to to http://www.casa.org/cara/aca/home.php.and send an e-mail saying something like. "One vote for the Mighty Echjopes as most popular Doo Wop group"

That should do it and your vote will count.

Thanks,

Harvey, Charlie, John & Jon

The urban a cappella band THREE 5 AND 6, www.three5and6.com is
actively seeking a bass to replace an outgoing member and are looking
to add a 6th member -- another tenor. The band is located in
Sacramento, CA and is currently making a push for full-time status
within the year.

This Christian, all male group imitates the full depth of
instrumental sounds found in a classic R&B or funk band as opposed to
the traditional "blended, one-voice" A Cappella sound. Their powerful
beats and bass drive a truly dynamic musical experience that fully
engages the listener.

THREE 5 AND 6 performs their own original music with a writing style
that displays a wide range of influences from Stevie Wonder and The
Gap Band to The Roots and KRS-One. Their debut CD, "Urban A Cappella"
is receiving incredible reviews and their original song, "Radiant
Love" was just awarded 2nd place in Billboard Magazine's World Song
Competition.

If you are interested or know of someone who might be, please contact
THREE 5 AND 6 at: 916-361-7777 or info@...

Now forming in the Mid-Wilshire area is the Wilshire Singers. This
new master chorale is a performing group that will perform a musical
spectrum. It will be a great way for singers to network and form
smaller groups.

The chorale's music will be accompanied. Selections will be
classical, jazz, Broadway and Movie favorites and other works for
larger groups. The chorale will also do "Caberet" programs,
featuring solos, duets, trios, quartets and other smaller groups.

Rehearsal is on Tuesday nights from 7:30-9:30PM. The rehearsal area
is in a secured location at the corner of Wilshire & Normandie in
the Mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles. Parking is also secured. You
can also use the Red Line Metro Underground to get there, using the
Wilshire-Normandie Red Line Metro station.

If you are interested, please send me an email:

sthawkins@...

Then I can give you my cell phone number and can get you access to
the rehearsal location.

See you soon,

Steve Hawkins
