Hi Gang,

Well, after spending the last 10 years with my radio audience on Thanksgiving
evening, this year my travels will prevent me from being with you.? I have hoped
this year that THN...The harmony Network, would have been moved to a 24-7
broadcast format and then, we would have been able to re-broadcast a "Best Of"
show for your listening enjoyment.? But as you are all aware, the funding issues
this year have prevented us from moving to that format.

Hopefully, we will be on the air next week resuming one of the longest running
acappella radio shows in the country.? Thanks for being such loyal listeners and
we look forward to being in the "Air Chair" next Thursday with the beginnings of
our "HOLIDAY SHOWS".

In Harmony,

Rich Taylor

We are producing a ten-volume audio book series entitled Mission Earth
which is a science fiction satire written by L. Ron Hubbard.

There is a lot of original music we are scoring for this and there is
a very short piece in a style similar to Carmina Burana, about 40
seconds long, that I need to bring in eight singers for (two of each
voicing). I estimate the recording to take about one hour.

There will be pay involved.

I need to record this on Friday morning or early afternoon. The
recordings will be done at Mad Hatter Studios in Silver Lake (you can
check out our website at

musicmanrichrmt

Hi to all those who have ever listened to The "APPLAUSE" Show since 1997 and/or
THN...The Harmony Network since March of 2004.? We hope this email finds you
well and that the beginning of your holiday season is les hectic than ours.

As most of you have read on these discussion groups, THN...The Harmony Network
was chartered as a "Non-Profit" 501 (c)3 organization on March 12, 2004.? The
Network has had as many as 6 shows on the air each week from the studios of
WVRM, 1620AM, 91.9FM and Comcast Cable Channel 34, and has been a Totally
Listener Supported venture since it's beginning in 2004.? We have struggled to
survive, to say the least, but somehow, each crisis we faced was resolved
because of listeners such as all who have sent even a $5.00 donation.? The
Network has tried in the last 4 months to raise enough money or to find one
commercial sponsor to allow us to go to a 24/7 format of live and pre-recorded
radio shows.? Although we did get enough to continue to the end of the year, we
now face unpaid bills and have, in the last 8 weeks, seen only $12.50 in
donations from our listeners or any groups interested in "all vocal music...all
the time".

We have decided to terminate the Network with our last show to be broadcast on
Sunday, December 23, 2007 from 7-11:00PM Eastern Time Zone.? We hope you will
join us for our last show that will have all of the THN family in the studio.?
The broadcast can be found at www.villageradio.com.

We want to have one more opportunity for fund-raising, only to pay the past due
bills that now total over $500.00.? HERE IS WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO:
Many artists have sent us CD's over the years that have gone into our "Premium
Library" that has been used to send "thank you" gifts to people that have sent
donations.? We are going to divide the Premium Library into 3 "Lots" and offer
them in a silent auction to all barbershoppers and vocal music afficianados.?
Within the next week, you will be advised of the contents of the 3 Lots and you
will have an opportunity to send your "bids" to us.? On Friday, Dec 21, we will
announce the successful bidders and get the CD's to them before Christmas.?
These lots?could consist of? 25 CD's, 50 CD's and 100 CD's or more based on the
number in the Premium Library.? They will consist of barbershop...male and
female...chorus and quartets, contemporary acappella, vocal jazz, gospel, high
school and collegiate acappella artists.? Each CD "Lot" will be NEW UNOPENED
CD's from the artists listed.? We will give you names of the artists, CD titles
and style of group for each CD in each Lot.?

We want to thank every one of you that has ever listened to The APPLAUSE Show
since 1997 and to THN...The Harmony Network since 2004.? All of our volunteer
staff members, the folks who have offered their time and talent to help the
Network grow, appreciate your support and hope that in the future, radio as a
medium for spreading the gospel of vocal harmony will be recognized and
financially supported by the organizations that participate in vocal harmony as
a form of music.

Look for continued announcements about the final weeks of THN...The Harmony
Network, "All Vocal Harmony...All The Time"

Sincerely yours,

The Staff and Family of THN...The Harmony Network

Hi, my name's Lenore, and I just joined the la-acappella egroup today. I was
born in the days of do-wop and grew up during the Beatles era (numbers feel so
limiting).

You can see a video of a very fun and clever version of "The 12 Days of
Christmas" by the a capella group "Straight, No Chaser" here:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=2Fe11OlMiz8 . Also, a reminder to save the date for
the the L.A. Harmony Sweepstakes regional competition on March 15, 2008, at the
Hermosa Beach Community Playhouse.

I am currently looking for a group to sing with that meets once or more weekly.
I live in Mt. Washington (near Los Feliz and Eagle Rock) and am also in Beverly
Hills area frequently. I would prefer a smallish group (12 or under) and I
particularly like jazz arrangements (Manhattan Transfer style, e.g.) but am
interested in other genres also.

Here's a mini performing bio:

I sang in Opera A La Carte (soprano in the chorus) for some years, was in the
Los Angeles Cambridge Singers (Alex Ruggieri), the L.A. Jazz Choir Workshop, the
CSUN jazz choir, the Voices of Christmas, and in a variety of other groups. I
was a soloist at Makom Ohr Shalom Temple for over ten years. I also have a
dance background. Please contact me via email at uclenore@... if you
know of a group that might be a good fit.

Thank you very much.

Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Lenore

Tis the season...tra la la. I would enjoy joining up, on a volunteer basis,
with a group that is planning to do Christmas carolling somewhere, like at a
hospital or convalescent home perhaps. I still have a Dickensonian carolling
outfit from when I worked with the Voices of Christmas years ago. I live in Mt.
Washington (near Los Feliz and Eagle Rock) and am also in the Beverly Hills/West
L.A. area frequently. I sang soprano in the V. of C. but have also carolled as
an alto at times.

Sincerely,

Hello; My Name is Manuel but most of my friends call me Manny,

I've just now come across your group and I think I may have at last
found the perfect forum. I am currently singing with my church choir in
Irvine, Ca. but we are not scheduled to rehearse again until sometime in
February.

I prefer to sing in the tenor range but depending on the needs of the
ensamble, I can support the groups texture and the needs of the song
best by knowing your part as well as mine for the best stability and
reliability. in other words you can count on my voice being there where
you need it to be unless we are specifically singing new harmonies

I Love the vocal harmonies of the Christian A capella group called Glad
and have sung many of their songs before. I sing these as my daily
devotional praise.

I Love to sing praise songs , contemporary christian songs that are
doctrinally and inspirationally rewarding, those that are uplifting and
engraciating to the listener, whether they be belivers or not, this I
believe is the whole purpose of singing at all and that is why I
especially Love Christian A capella.

I live some what near by in La Puente, Ca. and Work in Torrance, Ca.
these locations at first may seem like geographical limitations to you
at first and may even seem to be disqualifiers to you depending upon
your location and circumstances but fellow kindredly spirited singers
are not that easy to come across and once found are well worth knowing.

I sing in tune and can sight read some what and I have played and sung
before audiences before and being that I now Love to sing before the
Lord, I have no fear.

I wright and compose lyrics and melodies according to where His spirit
leads me, they usually take the form of poems and songs that morf into
anthems of Praises

There are many different levels of collaboration and distance should not
be a limiting factor in this day and age but rather interests and
desires and motivations are feathers that can bind one to another and
cause some to stick together.

If any one Loves the lord and wants to sing on a professional level for
His Glory lets talk it over and sing.

As for me and myself, I will sing before the Lord as this has become my
endeavor, alone if needs be, but prefferably in harmony together.

Call me if this has struck a cord in your artistic Christrian
spirititual journey. the road is narrow and I would happily love to
hear from you about your endeavors and desires in His service.

May The Lord Bless and keep You Always.

Hi everyone!
I sing with a couple of a cappella groups in north Orange County, and we're
always looking to share our passion of singing with others. I'd love to hear
from others as well.
We're trying to promote a cappella singing in our area, so we've been
hosting "Javapella" once a month. We're looking for groups to drop by & share
their music with us, and the community loves it. It's free (just purchase a

                  THE KINSEY SICKS IN Condoleezzapalooza

Returning To Los Angeles For An Exclusive Performance At The Pacific
Design Center's SilverScreen Theater on Saturday, February 9, 2008

LOS ANGELES – January 11, 2008 -- THE KINSEY SICKS, the Dragapella
Beautyshop Quartet that the New York Times called "the hottest ticket
in town," will bring their critically musical
comedy, "CONDOLEEZAPALOOZA" to the Pacific Design Center's
SilverScreen Theater in Los Angeles for an exclusive, one night only
performance on Saturday, February 9. 2008.

Tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased by calling Ticketmaster
(213) 480-3232, online at www.ticketmaster.com, or at a limited
amount of tickets at the door. Tickets are $30.00. Show time is 8:00
p.m. For more information on the Kinsey Sicks, visit their website at
www.kinseysicks.com.

Combining award-winning a cappella singing, biting wit, over-the-top
drag and a smidge of Jewish angst, THE KINSEY SICKS have been
called "one of the more uniquely original (and thoroughly fun and
entertaining) acts we have encountered in years" (Billboard Magazine)
and have been praised for their "voices sweet as birdsong" (New York
Times) and called "Outrageous, Marvelous, Hilarious" (Chicago
Tribune). Their Off-Broadway show, "Dragapella!" at the legendary
Studio 54 in New York City was called "riotously funny" and "sublime"
(Variety), and earned them a Drama Desk Award nomination for Best
Lyrics and two Lucille Lortel nominations, including for Best Musical
of 2001.

In Condoleezzapalooza, we learn that The Kinsey Sick have been
singing a cappella ever since they were left in the lurch by their
piano player, Condoleezza, who left them for some "better" gig. Sick
of life on the road yet unable to afford to quit, our four heroines
hurl blame at each other liked chipped beef at a cafeteria food
fight. But mostly, Condoleezzapalooza provides a setting for The
Kinsey Sicks to perform some of their most outrageous and political
material – both original songs and wicked parodies – all in gorgeous
4-part harmony.

THE KINSEY SICKS have been profiled on national television in the US,
Canada, Europe and Japan, including ABC, CBS and the NBC, and were
the subjects of a lengthy cover feature in the arts section of the
New York Times. They were recognized by The Hollywood Reporter as a
breakout hit at the 2002 Montreal Comedy Festival and starred in the
feature film "I Want To Be A Republican." They headlined in Las
Vegas in 2006 with the sit-down version of Dragapella at the Las
Vegas Hilton. They have recorded five CDs: "Dragapella," "Boyz 2
Girlz," "Sicks in the City," "I Want To Be A Republican" and "Oy Vey
in a Manger: Christmas Carols and Other Jewish Music."

The recent (cover date Jan 28) issue of TIME magazine has a
brief article on shape note singing ("Sacred Harp") focusing on
its weirdness.

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/
0,9171,1704683,00.html

It does not discuss this within the context of a cappella music,
but of folk music ("Bob Dylan made a pilgrimage to Woody
Guthrie").

Incidentally, what is the complete list of born-in-America a
cappella styles?

-- Barbershop
-- Shape note
-- Doowop

(I never thought to make a list before.)

Anyway, the article is correct about the demographics:

"housewives, ex-punkers, Evangelicals, atheists, Jews and
Buddhists"

Here in Los Angeles, we will have a 2-day Shape Note singing
this weekend:

And a 1-day singing on May 17.

This was my first exposure ever to this type of worshipful sing I
found it to be a very warm, friendly and comfortable environment to
sit in and participate in. I highly recommend it to anyone of those
whom love singing and the people who love to sing it.

I arrived a little late, to this two-day event, but it was a very
enjoyable experience nonetheless. I wasn't there long because of time
constrictions; I would have stayed longer if it were not for that. So
if anyone in attendance noticed a newcomer running out the door an
hour or so after he arrived, it wasn't because I didn't like the
music. That being said.

The sight-reading of shape singing music is a little odd at first to
follow along with but it is pretty straightforward once you get the
hang of it.

There were many dedicated (acappella) shape singers there in
attendance and what they may have lacked in numbers was more than
made up for in participation and enthusiasm.

On second thought, that last statement may be a little misleading as
there were as many as 50 - 65 people there when I arrived at about
6:30 pm Saturday evening. At lest 40-45 or so stayed after the social
hour to continue the eclectic sing, and I presume, because of their
participation, they may have stayed until the very end. So yes, there
may be a quit sizable Scared Harp Community of singers out there to
enjoy and support.

Now mind you this event had started sometime that morning and was to
continue on till around 9: pm? In other words this was and is an
event that participants planned on attending and staying there a good
long while. You know like that phrase "yall set awhile, take yer
shoes off, yall come back now hear?" Just that down home feeling
that I got and please don't misconscew my meaning. Pl-ease!!

There will be a second event to follow on Sunday but this posting
will be too late for you to attend. So I hope you were already aware
of this scheduled event.

I believe there is one planned by this group for this coming march,
so mark it down on your calendars for next time. And remember,
acappella singing in any form is a parisaptory sport.

By the way, I'm planning on getting on down to Redondo Beach next
Sunday January 27th. To support and enjoy an acappella event similar
to Java Joes in Yorba Linda last Sunday ( Javapella ) which I
unfortunaltly mist. in case I'm constrained again and can't make it,
somebody please post your impressions of the event so I can have some
thing to read here when I next check the postings.
till then your friend, Goodlyplayer out

Hi all,

The Contemporary A Cappella League is in its first year, and our LA
group is still recruiting members.
Our new mixed group could use a few more men. We're half way to our goal
of 20.
We will be shooting for big arrangements of rock, funk, r&b.

We meet in the Venice area, but have members from all over greater LA.

Check this out and let me know if you're interested enough to audition.

Manny, you missed the main event which ended at 4:30 each
day, and which was attended by 120 singers on Saturday and
100 singers on Sunday.

A total of 207 songs was sung during the day-time singings, with
84 people chosing to lead songs.

There were a large number of singers from Chicago (10+). Also
from Rhode Island, Virginia, Georgia, the Rocky Mountain states,
Oregon, and Washington.

On the porch the level ranged between 80 to 84 decibels.

At the threshold of the singing room it ranged between 90 to 96
decibels.

At the third row of the tenors, next to the basses, it got up to 99
decibels.

At the second row of the trebles, at times it got as high as 101
decibels.

(These readings were taken by myself on Sunday with a $40
RadioShack sound level meter.)

Because each song is first sung "on the shapes"

  fa-so-la fa-so-la mi fa

not as preparation or rehearsal, but as part of the art,
this makes it possible to say:

-- "It's not about the words, it's about the music."

(Manny, you and I are in a minority of perhaps 5% in being
conservative Christians who actually believe in the message
embodied in the words.)

Our next large singing will be May 17 (Saturday).
Location to be announced.

There won't be as many singers (we expect 70), but more
opportunites to lead songs.
