Down 4 The Count, award-winning a cappella vocal jazz quintet, has
just released their first CD! You may remember this ensemble from the
2004 or 2007 Los Angeles regional Harmony Sweepstakes, where we placed
2nd both times...

You can preview many of the songs on our website. The album is for
sale as either a physical CD or a digital download; we provide buttons
on our website to make either kind of purchase very easy.

We would love to have some feedback and/or reviews from a cappella
lovers such as yourself as well.

Thanks for reading...and hopefully listening! :)

A documentary about Shape Note singing will be shown at 7:00
p.m. on KCETDC on Friday, February 15.

The documentary is mostly about the social aspects of singing
from the _Sacred Harp_ in rural churches.

But there is also some historical commentary about early
American composers for acappella, such as William Billings, the
antagonistic attitude of Lowell Mason and the "better music
boys", and a close-up of present-day composer Raymond
Hamrick of Macon, GA.

Apparently Hamrick's work has not yet been published as a
collection, but an interim collection called _Georgian Harmony_
is about to become available. There will be a debut singing from
the _Georgian Harmony_ this Saturday, Feb. 16th, 10a-3p, at the
home of John and Elsie Hollingsworth in Ila, GA.Ê

Singers Anonymous, a recently formed a cappella vocal jazz group, is
looking for a soprano and a tenor. We aren't professionals, but the
vocal talent and musicianship of the singers in the group is fairly
high. We are doing some fun, challenging pieces, and hope to perform soon.

We rehearse every Monday from 7:45 to 9:45 in West Los Angeles.
Regular, reliable attendance is very important.

I don't require that you be able to sight read music, but you must at
least be able to read music well enough to pound your part out on a
keyboard at home. "Learning by ear" simply doesn't work in a group
this size.

If you're interested, or would like more information, please contact

Down 4 The Count is pleased and excited to tell you that we will be
having a CD release party at the world-famous Steamers Cafe in
Fullerton, California on Sunday April 6, from 4:30 to 7:30 PM!!

We will be performing mostly a cappella, but some of our tunes are
accompanied. But let's face it, you're REALLY a fan of vocal harmony
rather than a cappella, per se, right? I mean, what have you got
against instrumentalists, other than when they're all, like, snobby and
don't want to play with singers?

Hmm, I guess that's why I usually sing a cappella...

But anyway, we found some nice instrumentalists to play some tunes with
us. Really, they're nice.

There is a $5 cover charge and a two-item minimum, but the food is
fantastic so you won't be suffering! We will be performing two sets of
music, including almost everything on our CD and then some. We highly
recommend that you make reservations...and keep them, preferably...

Here's the specs in a format that you can easily cut and paste into your
calendar (hee hee):

This Sunday's acappella event known as the "Catalina Chord Club"
will be held again at the Catalina Coffee Company just across the
street from the Redondo Beach Pier at 126 N. Catalina Ave., Redondo
Beach, Ca. 310-318-2499 www.catalinacoffee.com and it's being
hosted by South Bays very own recording artists "Vocal Magic". You
can check'em out at www.readywillingmabel.com and
www.vocalmagic.org/Concerts.htm

So this coming Sunday evening is going to be another magnificent
success, just like the one, that's hosted by "Pacific Jazz", down at
Java Joe's, down in historically beautiful Yorba Linda. A couple of
weeks ago. www.javapella.com

These events bring out the best in our Acappella community and with
the additional promise of being even better than last time, because
you are going to be there with us.

What would this world be like with out those of us, who love to sing
the songs that can make you wanna cry or make you want to call all
your old friends up and invite'um over? This is why I am posting
this to you so you can get on board and make an evening of it. What
else you gonna do on a Sunday evening any way, watch re-runs of the
sopranos?

Make this an evening for your selves, come on down to the Redondo
Beach Pier for dinner and cocktails then make it on up to the
Catalina Coffee Company on Catalina ave, they sell gourmet items
just in case your running late and don't get down to the pier for
dinner, but if you do we'll be Gettin' it on, just across the street
Drinkin' a few cups of Hot Joe and Puttin' some Buggie in the
Wuggie.

By the way, The Catalina Coffee Company is one of my favorite places
and it's a very warm and cozy venue, where the Java and Jive flow
freely, just like at Java Joe's.

Read south bay Susie's posting below for additional info. And
contact Kate so you can get your group up and sing an acappella
favorite or an acappella original.

Singers you need to get the word out to your friends and fellow
singers there ain't nothing like doing a little singing around on
the side either. So come on down, take the time and make the trip,
spend sometime amongst those just like you, who sing the rhymes and
recall the times.

Let's get this community growin' and showin' what it's got. So don't
be shy, we'll see you Sunday

This Sunday's and every last Sunday of the month's "Catalina Chord
Club" held at the Catalina Coffee Company ! Is actually always
hosted by the South Bays very own extremely talented, recording
artists "Ready, Willing and Maybel".

Now I've been a little curious about that great name they have
selected for them selves and I'm not quite sure if "Ready" is a
reference to the two male vocalist in the group and "Willing" is
referring to the two lovely ladies vocalists, but I'm not sure?

I can't wait to ask either of the ladies if they are indeed "willing"

Could be that the guys are the ones that are "Willing" but I'm not
going to ask them. And if the ladies are the ones that are "Ready"
I'll be sure not to post that one unless it's ok with the group
first.

Either way, I have it on good authority that "Maybel" is actual the
vintage microphone they use on stage. And of course we've all heard
tell that "Maybel" is always "Ready, Willing and quite a Gal her
self.

As for the "Javapella" events that are held every second Sunday of
the month In Yorba Linda's pride and joy establishment "Java Joe's"
well I messed that one up too!

They are actually hosted by the equally famous and talentedly gifted
Acappellist
  " Vocal Magic "

Sorry about those little mix ups, I think I've gotten it right this
time. My apologies to one and all concerned. Without the dedication
of the Hosts and the participating vocalist and especially to the
graciousness of the proprietors of these two fine establishments of
Caffeinated and De-caffeinatedly brewed refreshments.

Most of us would probably be sittin' around Sunday evening's,
watching re-runs of the Sopranos and after that horrific ending. I
won't ever do that again so help me!!! Wow What were they
thinking!!!

And so "shall I bend low and, in a bondman's key, / with bated
breath and whisp'ring humbleness, / say this". To thee

I'll see Ya's all there this Sunday at the Catalina Coffee Company,
or be square.

Acappella Hosting is a web hosting company with a twist: we only provide
our services to a cappella groups, both collegiate and professional. Why
did I start this company? Because I saw the need through both the group
I sing with and also through the other groups I've met over the years.

Over the last few months however, Acappella Hosting has gained
considerable ground in the community. We have over 20 collegiate and
professional clients and we offer world class service that you normally
would have to pay hundreds of dollars for with other companies.

Whether you are looking to just host your website for a fraction of the
price you are paying now, or would like us to help design, create, and
implement a website for your group, Acappella Hosting is the company to
choose.

Whatever your budget we can fit to it, the most important thing is that
we are here to help you expand your exposure both on and off stage and
we do this by having one-on-one discussions with your members on how to
work publicity networks, both public and private. We even set up
Facebook, Myspace, and other social networking pages for your group once
you sign up. The value here isn't matched anywhere else. Also for
college and other school-associated groups, please ask about our SUMMER
DEFERRAL program.. which means while school is out, or when your group
isn't performing you don't have to pay the full monthly cost! All that
gets charged is a $1.99 service fee which helps cover our cost of
operations.
I want you to know that I'm really excited about the possibility of
partnering with your group. I give you my guarantee that I will
personally oversee your account from start to finish and ensure you get
the best quality service that Acappella Hosting can offer. That is why
I'm offering discounted hosting and services for the first five months
to the first 20 groups who sign with Acappella Hosting in 2008 -- and
any other successful group referrals you provide could permanently
extend your discounts! All I ask in return is your support through
referring Acappella Hosting to others with whom you come in contact. You
really can't lose!

We have clients all over the US and recently Canada. We are looking to
expand to cover a cappella groups from countries around the world.

Thank you, and I hope to hear from you soon!

"We're here to help build the community, and with your help we can make
it happen!"

The Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival is the premier American
showcase for vocal harmony music. The annual national competition
draws from hundreds of vocal groups from around the country with
regional competitions in eight cities. The winning group from each
festival is flown to perform in front of celebrity judges and a sold
out house of enthusiastic a cappella fans at the National Finals.

The Los Angeles Regional Prelims will be held at 7:30 on Sunday,
April 20 at the Hermosa Beach Playhouse (710 Pier Ave (At Pacific
Coast Highway), Hermosa Beach). Host group for the evening (who will
also perform) will be Moira Smiley & VOCO who won last year's L.A.
Regional & went on to win the National contest as well. Our Judges
will be the very entertaining quartet Hi-Fidelity (they will also
perform). Hi-Fidelity won our contest in 2006 & also won the
National that year.

The L.A. Regional has produced the ultimate National champion two
years in a row now and we have high hopes for this year as well. All
shades of a cappella will be represented including jazz, doo-wop,
barbershop & other genres that simply defy classification.

Please plan to attend for a wonderful night of vocal entertainment!

Hi there!

I'm Stacey, a seasoned professional singer and performer. I've just
relocated from the San Francisco Bay Area to the Westside, and I'm
looking for new musical opportunities.

I'm a recent veteran of Bay Area a cappella group Flying Without
Instruments, or FWI (www.flyingwithoutinstruments.com). I performed as
a soloist with FWI at the Northern California Harmony Sweeps last
month at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.

FWI also was featured in the short film "Exit," which won second prize
in Visa's 2007 48 Hour Film Competition. The film was written
especially for FWI, who wrote and performed the original score, as
well as acted in the film.

In addition to my a cappella experience, I'm a veteran frontwoman of
two original Northern California rock bands. I've performed all over
Northern California in front of audiences of up to 5,000 people;
opened for several big names in music; and have performed live on
radio with my band. I also play several instruments, including the
acoustic guitar and various types of hand percussion.

Above all, music is my passion, and how I've met some of the best
friends I have. I'd love to join a group of like-minded pro singers
who are looking for someone with my experience and background.

Cheers,

Stacey

THE BOBS - Concert Notification
Northern and Southern California
May/June 2008

The Bobs are back in California - what a great way to kick off the summer!

For longtime fans, The Bobs' show is very new these days - featuring many tunes
from
their recently released (and 14th) CD, GET YOUR MONKEY OFF MY DOG.
The album and the show have gotten some great press - check out the quotes at
the end
of this email! But if you need to hear one of your favorite Bobs songs (from
the OTHER
THIRTEEN ALBUMS), you really should request it - and in the most creative way
possible.
That's all I'm
sayin'.

In other news, Amy Bob's solo CD, NOT GONNA BE PRETTY (http://www.coldfoot.net),
is a
hit with Bobs fans AND the unenlightened! When we sent a shameless promotional
email
out last month announcing it, CDbaby sold out of their copies within ONE HOUR!
Amy is
doing a CD release concert/party in Hollywood on June 6 - info is below.

legendary comedy folk quartet The Foremen.
Tom Lehrer himself says, "I congratulate Roy
Zimmerman on reintroducing literacy to comedy
songs."

RECENT PRESS QUOTES

"Fun, inventive and full of sass and spice.
..The material may be splendidly silly, but
The Bobs are serious about entertaining and
trying to find your ticklish spot.." -
Talkin' Broadway

"Virtuosic and funny and ingeniously
arranged..." - Metroland

"The Bobs are an a cappella quartet that
falls outside both traditions. Neither
conventional nor stuffy, they mostly perform
original songs, and they've taken a page from
the Ramones." - Washington Post

"They are simply the template for funny,
witty, superlatively harmonized a cappella
singing with a strong emphasis on a slightly
skewered cynicism that is offset by a deeper
sense of humanism. The Bobs are beyond fun."

Singers Anonymous, a recently formed mixed a cappella vocal jazz
group, is looking for an alto and a tenor. We aren't professionals,
but we're doing some fun, challenging pieces, and we hope to perform soon.

We rehearse every Monday from 7:45 to 9:45 in West Los Angeles.
Regular, reliable attendance is very important.

I don't require that you be able to sight read music, but you must at
least be able to read music well enough to pound your part out on a
keyboard at home. "Learning by ear" simply doesn't work in a group
this size.

If you're interested, or would like more information, please contact
me at strategiccreative@...

Thanks,

David

A Cappella Male Vocal Group Needed

Former Island recording artist seeks a 3-4 piece
soulful MALE vocal group for a new recording project.
The song is in the style of The Impressions, The Pips,
The Drifters. It's an old school rock and soul thing.
Recording will be in Hollywood in the next few weeks.
The session should only last a few hours. Please email
links to your music or send me an mp3 of your stuff.
