I'm putting together a new Los Angeles based A Cappella group. I
already have a 2nd Soprano, Tenor and I will be singing Baritone. The
three of us are looking for a Bass, Alto and 1st Soprano to join us.

We are looking for talented and dedicated singers who are willing to
take the time to help start this new venture. Starting a new group is
always much harder than joining an already formed group, but it can be
VERY rewarding when it takes off! We want singers who will contribute
enough that we get up and running within just a few short weeks so we
can start performing right away (even if its just on the street corner
;-)). A HUGE plus if you have songwriting/arranging skills, or have
connections to get us inexpensive studio time or gigs. Also, not
meaning to exclude some of the wonderful talent out there, but we
really are looking for mostly people between the ages of 20-35.

Unfortunately, there will not be any pay right away, but the sooner we
get up and running and get a few gigs, the sooner there will be
compensation! We will be doing a wide variety of standard vocal
charts, already published arrangements, original arrangements from
members within the group, and most definitely some original songs as
well. Also, we will be performing Christmas music, during the holiday
season!

Please email me, Nate George, at jazzsinger1482@... and tell me
about yourself, why you would be perfect for this group and I will
email you back to give you information on what you should have
prepared for the audition, as well as the time and the location.

Subject: The Best Way to learn how to sight read
goodlyplayer

Not being able to read music like the pros is no sin at all, but if
you have a real desire to sing and to sing with other people, then
at some point you are going to have to pick up a book on music
notation, just the basics like what kind of note are these what are
these lines for, etc and get on it it's a new language but the more
you speak it and read it the more you will learn to speak it and
read it.

Immediately find a church choir that will let you sing with them or
at least hang around during their rehearsals and practice your sight
reading with them, now the last suggestion may or may not suit the
faint of heart, but in order to sing well "you have got to have
heart" and get your feet wet

Your desire will prevail and you will learn by following along with
the choir, just knowing when to turn the pages and keep up with the
song being sung, will get you going in the right direction.

Practice maturing your voice, by singing whole note for as long as
you can without fluctuating the tone very much. That is once you've
found the tone that you want, then do this with other tones and
practice stringing them together this will help in the choir. You
will get the feel for what the other singers are doing in your
section and you will learn by emulating.

Sing every chance you get in the shower, in the car with the windows
rolled up, and I especially recommend stair wells at work OR but
some where that it is entirely safe for you to do so. You will hear
the difference reverberating back at you.

The choir director will make suggestions on how to enunciate your
vowels and drop out consonants while singing, if they are good they
will take the time to show you when to drop your jaw and trumpet
your lips, to sit straight up and stand straight up while you are
singing and to remember to keep your attention on the director and
the music.

Don't be afraid to make your own notations on the sheet music in
pencil and if it is your own sheet music you can use a yellow
highlighter marker go easy on the marker though it will seep through
to the other side.

There are wonderful sheet music companies that have recordings of
hymns and anthems by great sounding choirs and some pieces will have
CD's recorded with your part so that you can sing along with your
section at your own pace (one cd there will be alto version and
another track with the sopranos; another cd with the tenors recorded
and another track of the song with the basses singing) now how great
is that, but don't get lazy.

One such company is the Lorenz corp. They have hymns and anthems and
cantatas and other dramatic productions in the formats I've just
described above.
Take the time to go to that web site pick out an anthem, hymn or
major work and have at it you've got nothing to lose but the fear of
not being able to sight read. This suggestion will really inspire
and really help you along.

Look I sing church music and I love this I really do I sing
Christian acappella , gospel what ever I like and I work on it and
offer it up to My Lord God and King, Jesus Christ. I get to sing
before the God of the bible, who just happened to be the God of the
universe, I worship Him as if I am singing before His very Throne
and I am so much the better for it. Now that is my motivation, what
is yours?

Singing is for the armature and the professional, the birds sing and
chirp but they are really very limited even though they are
wonderful at what they do. The human voice on the other hand is
capable of so much more expression.

An exceptional singer can make you want to cry and make you happy
and sad at the same time. You know what I am talking about now you
don't actually have to sight read music for that but it really does
help to open up so much more varieties of expression to you.

I encourage you to learn to read music I don't mind telling you that
my sight reading is coming along very nicely.

Like you perhaps the ways and the art of the vocalist were unknown
to me at one time and I am still learning,

Yes I feel that I've come around lately to this knowledge and
blessing by the Grace of God.

Because never in a million years would I have ever thought of
writing a posting like this for on other reason than I feel lead to
put this out to you so that you can take your place among other
singers and sing your hearts out.

As I've said before this is my particular motivation and blessing
for there have been and there are still being written, wonderful
compositions that have opened up for me great vistas of beauty and
glory that would otherwise had gone un noticed by me and by virtue
of not being able to sight read music the same can probably be said
of you.

So don't be afraid there is nothing stopping you so take these words
and suggestions to heart and get going. Let me know if you have any
questions Ok Smooth Sailling to you and

May God bless you in this endeavor?

Hello I just wanted to let you know that this past Friday evening
concert for the 70th anniversary of the National Association of
Church Musicians (formerly know as the Choral Conductors Guild) was
a moving and beautiful experience for all those who attended.

The festival choir was made up 15 sopranos and 19 altos 7 tenors and
8 basses representing 15 different churches of varying denominations

This festival choir was a last minute addition to the festivities,
consequently the choir rehearsed only two Thursdays prior to the
event and because of the marvelous talents and abilities of those
who volunteered and those movers and shakers within the NACM
leadership that directed and produced this special event, you would
have thought you had attended a performance worthy of the
metropolitan opera, Dorothy Chandler pavilion, or the new Disney
Auditorium.

The evening began with the prelude "When in Our Music God Is
Glorified ": suite for Organ; performed by Mr. David Cherwien

Festival Choir:

Gloria from the 12th mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
To Love Our God by Mark Hayes
Praise God! by Fred Bock

A Symphony of Spirituals by Joel Raney
Preformed by Mr. Ken Gilliard (Church Organ)
And Mr. Francisco Calvo (Concert Grand Piano)

Mr. Hal H. Hopson the directed the festival choir in the world
premiere of

" O Sing To The Lord A New Song "written and conducted by Mr. Hopson
Of this specially commissioned anthem for the 70th anniversary
Celebration of the National Association of church Musicians

The evening concluded with the postlude: Toccata for Organ by Noel
Goemanne

The entire evening was a huge success, my congratulations to all
those involved

I will keep you posted about any new events for those lovers of the
music made of and for the soul by the human voice unto God.

um, I was a bit surprised to see these last two postings, as this group has
never been a church or christian-oriented place. I am not sure how going to
a church choir is "the Best Way" to learn sight reading. In fact, I highly
recommend your local community college's music program which is very
inexpensive, and they usually have both day and evening sections of
choirs... and, if you are like me and prefer your music non-sectarian, no
religious proselytising.Just a thought. I am happy to learn about those CDs
with the parts, those WOULD be very useful, and I intend to look into
getting some. Any other sight reading suggestions?

New Los Angeles A Cappella Group is looking for a BASS!!!!

The qualities we're looking for in this Bass include -
*Must be able to read music.
*Must be able to sing a low C (2 octaves below middle C),
comfortably... bonus points if you can hit notes lower than that!
*Must have experience singing walking bass lines, and enjoy singing
them, as well as other typical bass line grooves, on a regular basis.
You will have solo opportunities, but these bass lines will be your
primary focus.
*Huge plus if you can mix percussion sounds in with your grooves!

Having the role of Bass, you will primarily be part of the background
vocals, and a lot time will contribute to the 'rhythm section' for the
group, but solo opportunities will be given if desired. While you
mostly will be in the background (as far as the music is concerned),
we are still looking for a bass that can really stand out and give the
audience a great show, we want you to be able to turn those low,
rumbling, and sometimes repetitive, grooves into something exciting to
listen to!

We are looking for talented and dedicated singer who is willing to
take the time to help start this new venture. A HUGE plus if you have
songwriting/arranging skills. Also, not meaning to exclude some of the
wonderful talent out there, but we really are looking for people

about yourself, why you would be perfect for this group and he will
email you back to give you information on the audition time and location.

Most churches have done such a thorough job of ruining the
traditional congregational musical skills that, if any singer shows
up to help them out, they don't ask very many questions about
belief.

...to help them out...
(in what is after all their main function).

>
> Any other sight reading suggestions?
>

Barbershop groups.

Really, I think between church choirs, community colleges, and
barbershop groups, it's going to depend on personalities more
than anything else.

A weakness of academic settings is that the teacher is so focus
on his/her own career that they don't really train newbies.

A weakness of church choirs is that, e.g. if short of tenors, any
incoming men is told "you are really a tenor".

( they don't care if you wreck your voice.)

A weakness of barbershop groups is that they you might get a
hernia hauling those risers around. A lot of singers aged sixty
and above --

"Hey, who wants to help lift eight risers into the pickup truck?"

(As though the cost of hernia repair is included in the dues.... )

(it really depends on the group)

Then there's also shape-note singing, which I've posted about
here before.

The purpose of using shapes is to make it easier for ordinary
people to learn how to sight-read without learning all 12 key
signatures.

(All major key songs are "in the key of triangle")

(If it's the key of F, then F gets the triangle, and C gets the oval)

(If it's the key of C, then C gets the triangle and G gets the oval).

Instrumentalists need to know where the "black keys" and "white
keys" are -- "fingering" , but knowing that the F is sharp doesn't
help a singer place fingers on the correct positions of the
pharynx.

As for the social setting, the advantage of shape note singing is
that it doesn't require any commitment.

The disadvantage is that you might be the only person singing
alto (because none of the other altos felt like coming)

(can be really terrifying if you're just starting out)

(it can be even more terrifying if you're really a bass, and there
aren't any altos.....)

The other weird thing about shape note is that the songs are all
religious circa 1844, but at least in California 95% of the singers
have a sort of "pathos of distance" between their personal
beliefs and the song texts.

So, this freaks out conservatives (What are all these unbelievers
doing here?) and the more rigid atheists and universalists (Why
don't you change the words?).

Take your pick.

The main thing is to sing...

David

Free CDs
An A Cappella Opportunity For Students Who Can't Stop Singing

BOSTON - Tunes To Teens is turning up the volume this fall, making its
CD donation program available to high school and junior high school
choruses free of charge.

Since 2003, more than 3,000 students have received a cappella CDs
donated by singers, educators and fans of unaccompanied vocal music.
Usually, chorus directors must contribute $1 per CD to help cover the
expenses of the nonprofit program. But this fall, those fees will be
waived for school choruses that are new to the program, in an effort
to reach more singers in more regions. That means more access to
contemporary a cappella, the addictive trend of translating rock, jazz
and world music into a captivating all-vocal style.

"A cappella music gets students excited about harmonizing -- and the
theory and skill it requires," said Tunes To Teens founder Chris Tess.
"This fall, Tunes To Teens will be able to show more students what
their voices are capable of."

Choruses with up to 100 students will be eligible for free CDs, if
it's their first time participating in the program. For bigger
choruses, the first 100 students can receive free recordings, with
additional CDs available for $1 per student. Tunes To Teens is a
program of the Contemporary A Cappella Society, a California-based
nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering contemporary vocal
music.

Students and teachers who have participated in the program say it has
been an inspiration. "This program is really terrific," said Stephanie
of Westbrook Maine, a student whose instructor handed out Tunes To
Teens CDs. "Thank you for this brilliant program and the chance for me
personally to be exposed to a style of music I've never been
introduced to before."

Choir directors say the benefits are immediate. "Our CDs arrived, and
it was just like Christmas!" said Jane Vanderhoff of Garden City High
School Applied Music Class, in Garden City Kansas. "We will be sharing
in class this way: after each student has listened to their CD, they
will share one with the class and discuss something about it - why
they chose it, style, performer, etc. This is a great idea, and I
know it will have the effect I am hoping for - to generate more
interest and development of a cappella vocal jazz singing in our
school."

This summer, Rolling Stone magazine asked "Is A Cappella Secretly
Awesome?" Judging by the excitement of Tunes To Teens participants,
the answer is yes.

I'm an experienced amateur singer looking to put together a
performance-oriented vocal jazz quartet (but not limited to jazz -
anything we like that sounds good is fair game). If you're interested,
email me with your range; the evenings you're available to rehearse
(I'm planning to rehearse once a week in Santa Monica, but if you want
to host rehearsals, I'll consider a different location); and a bit
about your musical background.

It isn't necessary that you sightread perfectly (I don't!), but I
expect you to be able to take sheet music home and learn it relatively
rapidly. I want to build up a repertoire and perform. It goes without
saying that you must be able to commit to regular, reliable
attendance, and that you must be able to hold your pitch accurately
against other singers. There will be an audition.

I'm a bass/baritone, and I have a good friend who's a tenor who is
excited about this project. We haven't decided whether to go with a
SATB or a TTBB configuration. We'll decide based on the replies we
receive.

If you're interested, or would like more information, please contact

Subject: SFV A Cappella group is looking for a Bass and an Alto/Second Soprano! (revised)
nategeorge2004

New Los Angeles based A Cappella group is looking for a BASS and an
Alto/Second Soprano!!!!

The qualities we're looking for in these singers include-

Bass
*Must be able to read music!
*It is preferable that you can hit a low C (two octaves below middle C)
*Must be comfortable with walking bass lines, and enjoy singing them,
and other typical bass lines on a regular basis
*Huge plus if you can mix vocal percussion in with your grooves.

Alto/Second Soprano:
*Must be able to read music!
*The lower the notes you can hit, the better!
*Must be very comfortable singing solos as well as complex background
harmony parts.

Special note for Basses: Having the role of Bass, you will primarily
be part of the background vocals, and a lot of time you will
contribute to the 'rhythm section' for the group, but solo
opportunities will be given if desired. While you mostly will be in
the background (as far as the music is concerned), we are still
looking for a bass that can really stand out and give the audience a
great show, we want you to be able to turn those low, rumbling, and
sometimes repetitive, grooves into something exciting to listen to! If
you can't hit a low C, but can hit notes close to it and feel you are
good at bass grooves regardless, please do contact me. The low C is
desired but not ultimately required if you possess other qualities
that would make you perfect for our group.

The current line-up of the group is between the ages of 20-26 years
old. We are having a lot of fun together and have been working hard,
learning songs in many different styles. The current repertoire
consists of published arrangements, original arrangements and even
original songs from members of the group. Also, we plan to do some
Christmas repertoire during the Holiday Season.

Unfortunately, there will not be any pay right away, but the sooner we
get up and running and get a few gigs, the sooner there will be
compensation!

We will be rehearsing on Wednesday night, this week, in Sherman Oaks
from 7-9pm. We would like ideal candidates to try singing with us
during that next rehearsal. Please email Nate George at
jazzsinger1482@... or call him at 831-588-9482, and tell him
about yourself, why you would be perfect for this group and he will
email you back to give you the location of the rehearsal.

SINGERS/VOCAL PERCUSSIONISTS WANTED - Fall 2008

Are you a singer who likes to ...

* make percussive noises in a groove,
* scream like a trumpet, or guitar,
* vocally jam like an instrumental solo,
* work together to make a sound bigger than a sum of individuals?

Do you like Tower of Power, Red Hot Chili Peppers, or Talking Heads?

Do you like making social statements? (After all, we are based in
Venice! Though, we have members from all over greater LA.)

Then, we are looking for you to join this Contemporary A Cappella
League group (CAL http://www.casa.org/content/view/831/173/ ). The
league supports bands roughly the size of typical collegiate a
cappella groups, 8-20. And we need more members to support our voice
parts. Especially, we need talented VP/beatboxing or rhythmic singers.

The league is only one year old, and we are growing an international
presence. Our first gathering in Memphis this past summer headlined
Take 6. ( http://vocalsymplosium.com/ )

Next year, our get together will be combined with the 100 year
anniversary of college a cappella in Boston. ( http://www.ac100.org/

Please visit http://www.marinamotion/vox/faq for more about the group.

For more information on the LA group, or to arrange an audition,
please email a reply or give Bart a call at 310-717-1609 .

Finally, we are also looking for an assistant to help in recruiting
and development. If interested, please let me know.

(This is an update to a message I recently posted.)

I'm an experienced amateur singer looking to put together a
performance-oriented vocal jazz quintet (but not limited to jazz -
anything we like that sounds good is fair game). We now have an SATB
quartet; we would like to add a mezzo. If you're interested, email me
with your range; the evenings you're available to rehearse(I'm
planning to rehearse once a week in Santa Monica, but if you want to
host rehearsals, I'll consider a different location); and a bit about
your musical background.

If you're interested, or would like more information, please email me.

Thanks,

David

Hi, I'm new to this group! I was wondering if any of you in LA are interested in
coming together for group voice lessons. I used to take lessons from a local
teacher and I was getting really good. She gives private and group lessons and
also does a special seminar for 10 or more people which takes like 5 hours in
one afternoon. Anyway let me know if any of you are interested..

On behalf of Bruin Harmony, I would like to invite you to the first
annual Los Angeles A Cappella Festival (LA/AF). Situated on the
beautiful UCLA campus, this all-day event will include classes,
panels, and coaching sessions facilitated by Deke Sharon, The House
Jacks, and other top professionals in the vocal music industry.

Classes will begin on Saturday morning January 31, 2009 and continue
throughout the day with a break for lunch and an exhibition by
collegiate a cappella groups from around the nation. The festival will
culminate in an evening concert by vocal band, The House Jacks and
L.A.'s own Vybration for an audience of nearly 1500.

The Los Angeles A Cappella Festival will offer extraordinary
networking opportunities between a cappella groups from across the
country, in addition to providing attendees the chance to meet and
work with talented, experienced teachers. We've carefully selected a
wide range of course topics that will appeal to leaders and members
alike, including recording, solo delivery, and songwriting/arranging.

Individual passes for the Los Angeles A Cappella Festival are
available now for only $36, and if you register at least eight members
of your group, each member will receive a 30% discount. Your group
will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with the best in the
industry for only $25 per person! We've also decided to include the
admission to the evening concert in the festival package, a $20 per
person value!

Registration has already begun and is limited, so be sure to reserve

opportunity to show the world your gift? Our vocal group is ready to

Please read the ad below, if you feel you fit what we're looking for,
please respond right away!

COLLEGIATE A CAPPELLA ARRANGERS

Ben Folds has just launched a contest. In his words: "I'm making an
album of a cappella versions of my music to be performed by the best
university groups we can find. This idea was motivated by a number of
amazing university a cappella versions of my songs I came across on
YouTube. Some of these brought to light unique nuances and perspective
that is necessarily absent from the original recordings as the
songwriter and singer happen to be the same guy. I was moved and
inspired. Some of these versions were an improvement in my humble
opinion and it would be a great opportunity to capture some of this."
Ben Folds wants 12 or so tracks from collegiate groups, submitted via
YouTube. And if you make the cut, he's going to send one of his
producers to help you record a Ben Folds tune. WOW!
