Sole Voce Los Angeles Presents:
The Philippine Madrigal Singers: The Los Angeles Concert
The Philippine Madrigal Singers first earned critical acclaim during their
performance in the First Choruses of the World Festival at the Lincoln Center in
New York in 1969. This concert welcomed them to the international choral
community, eventually paving the way to joining the most distinguished
international choral competitions - Spittal, Austria; Arezzo and Gorizia, Italy;
Neuchatel, Switzerland; Debrecen, Hungary; Varna, Bulgaria; Tolosa, Spain; and
Marktoberdorf in Germany, and winning all the top prizes.
In June 1997, the Philippine Madrigal Singers came home from their ninth world
concert tour, winning the grand prize in the European Choral Grand Prix in
Choral Singing in Tours, France, besting the five other grand prize winners of
the most prestigious choral competition in Europe: Guido D'Arezzo, Italy;
Debrecen, Hungary; Varna, Bulgaria; Gorizia, Italy; and Tolosa, Spain. The Madz
displayed a virtuoso performance so moving one juror had to describe the group's
music as the "most beautiful sound on earth".
In July 2006, the Madz won the grand prize (Grand Prix de la Ville de Tours) at
the Florilege de Tours choral competition in France, making them eligible for
the 2007 European Grand Prix for Choral Singing (to be held in Arezzo, Italy).
In the same competition, the Madz were also awarded the first prize for Category
III (mixed vocal ensemble), first prize for Category IV (free program) and the
Prix University François Rabelais for best interpretation of a Renaissance
program.
On August 26, 2007, the Philippine Madrigal Singers won the Grand Prize in the
European Grand Prix in Choral Singing in Arezzo, Italy, making them the first
choir in the competition's history to win it twice and the only Asian choir to
do so.
On 27 July 2009, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr. Koïchiro Matsuura,
designated the Philippine Madrigal Singers as UNESCO Artists for Peace at a
ceremony which took place just before the group’s concert at UNESCO
Headquarters in Paris.
The group performs a variety of styles and forms but it specializes in the
Madrigal, a polyphonic and challenging musical style popular during the
Renaissance period where singers and guests would gather around the table during
a banquet to sight-sing and make music together. This served as the inspiration
for their unique style of singing - singing seated in a semi-circle without a
conductor. As Philippine ambassador of culture and goodwill, the Madz has had
the pleasure and privilege of giving command performances for royalty and heads
of state. These include Pope Paul 6th, Pope John Paul II, Presidents Gerald Ford
and Richard Nixon, Queen Sofia of Spain, King Juan Carlos de Bourbon and Prime
Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
The influence of the Madz on the Philippine and Asian choral scene has been
far-reaching. It has graduated more than 200 choral and vocal pedagogues from
its ranks, actively involved in organizing and conducting choirs. Its corps of
members, alumni composers and choral arrangers (Emmanuel Laureola, Fabian
Obispo, Ruben Federizon, Ed and Annie Nepomuceno, Robert Delgado, Fr. Arnold
Zamora, Christopher Borela, Anna Abeleda-Piquero, Nilo Alcala, etc.) continue to
produce new compositions and choral settings of Philippine and Asian songs, thus
contributing to the growth of choral literature in Asia. The Madz also maintains
an active concert tour schedule, averaging two concert tours per year.
Furthermore, their outreach concert tours take them to far-flung areas of the
Philippines, seldom reached by other artists.

Hey, that's us on the LA Acappella page up there! Nifty! Wanna be up there?
Evolution was (or I suppose technically still is) the 2009 LA Regional Harmony
Sweepstakes winner. We've got a few concerts scheduled in the upcoming months,
and a recurring monthly gig in Santa Monica so rapid learning/reading music is
certainly a boon.
About Evolution:
We're a six-man group; Three of us are Ithacappella graduates (two helped found
'em, for Pete's sake); we're focusing on building several marketable sets for a
variety of potential clients; we have been known to do a little doo-wop, but
have tweaked them to function in the contemporary setting; one of us lives with
Black Widows and does not fear them; Evo-meetings (two-a-week) are split between
the Hollywood area and Sherman Oaks.
About You:
Sing low... we're not necessarily talking V.O.G. ("Voice Of Gabe", this guy I
knew in Boston), but we're not counting out V.O.G.'s either!; As before- a quick
and solid learner, gigs are on the books. Relaxed-professionalism is the key.
What To Do:
Email us at evolutionsings - at - gmail.com with the following:
A) A list of some of your performance history, both pop a cappella and choral,
if you've got it.
2) What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?
III) Your 2 favorite songs you remember singing (either solo or as
"background").
E) Send an mp3 of you performing, produced and/or raw.
¿) And lastly, include the last movie you saw that you really, really liked.
Personally, it was Star Trek.

The Sing-Off, the new NBC talent show exclusively for a cappella groups will be
holding auditions in LA in September. Groups of between 4 - 10 members of any
style are welcome.
From the show's press release:-
"Groups will rehearse and sing the world's most popular songs, arranged and
performed like you've never heard them…no lip-synching, no back-up bands, no
safety net. They will compete weekly in front of the show's panel of
professional experts. One group will be eliminated each episode and America will
decide in our live finale who will be the nation's best a cappella group and
will walk away with the ultimate prize."

I'm creating a vocal group to sing Beach Boys/Jan and Dean/Surf/beach/girls/car
songs.
I love the Beach Boys and all the vocal groups that have that sound.
I'd like to get 4 or 5 guys together who also love this music and would like to
sing it with a group. Instrumentation is cool too, but I'd like it to be
primarily vocals.
Please contact me if you're interested.

Just formed group with the working name of "Sono" (sorry Sonos, we'll be changed
soon!) is looking for man/woman/thing with a talent for spitting in rhythm. We
are just starting out so we're focused on performing, not making bucket loads of
$$$, so you'll want to keep your day jobs for now. Preferred someone has solid
skills and no other current performing obligations.
Contact me if interested!

Hi,
This message is not about a group or event but a location.
A small group of shape note singers now
have the use of a room in a church basement
on Thursday nights in Culver City.
Small group means 3 people sometimes 5.
Small room, concrete acoustics.
(One voice effortlessly goes to 90-94 dB)
(using Radio Shack $50 decibelmeter)
(Almost like singing in a stairwell)
Our method of using this space is still being formed.
Generally we are following a "Sacred Harp model";
of non-performance amateurs taking turns,
choosing songs from an established tunebook,
and a "barbershop model"
of coming whenever we feel like it...
Someone might drop in for 10 minutes,
we'll sing a couple of her favorite songs,
then she'll leave.
In other words, that small-town model
where there's a "cracker barrel" or general store
or church basement, and people gather there,
as part of doing other errands.
Everybody lives close by.
Some of us walk.
So, if you live close to Culver City,
and you just want to drop in before or after having
coffee at The Spot or The Conservatory,
or on your way to the library...
Detailed directions are here:
<www.hosorembo.com>
or phone me.
So, we're going to have an organized singing
once a month. But these informal things
have happened every week since we got the room.
"barbershop model"
not as in "barbershop quartet"
but as in the village barbershop
where "folks" hung out,
some of whom liked to sing,
some of whom discovered that crazy seventh,
among other things...
