As well you may know, ROYAL CITY are currently featured on a
MAGNET magazine compilation and will be, as of may 23rd,
webcast from the SPIN magazine website in a performance from
SPIN's NYC office.
As well you may not know, and in louder-long-ago moments,
Aaron of Royal City was once a member of punk band Minnow.
Minnow played shows all over North America and Europe with
bands like Fugazi, Snapcase and Shotmaker. Aaron was also
the first person to book Fugazi in Canada--when he was fourteen
years old. Aaron is also the 'real' Aaron of the Robert Munsch
book recently released entitled 'Aaron's Hair'. Robert Munsch is
the #1 best-selling children's author in the world.
Royal City were voted best live band in Toronto by EYE's
(entertainment weekly) music critics for two-years running, and
were on this paper's cover in August. For this, and other press,

NASHVILLE SCENE
"High praise has been heaped upon this Toronto group, and
there is good reason why names such as Palace, Smog, and
Low pop into mind. Royal City's quiet acoustic songs are filled
with urban imagery, but unwind at a rural pace. The band's
newest album, At Rush Hour the Cars, weaves through a
landscape of trains, cars, and dirty streets, touching on failed
relationships, youth, and health in choruses that build and fall
through loose guitars and not-quite-in-unison voices. The
expressive moments often collapse entirely, and songs end
before they are resolved; it's disruptive and comforting at once. "

PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY
The Changeling of the Palace Guard -- Royal City re-invents the
new sincerity.
Fifty years of rock and roll, and time and again, the Canadians
continue to
trump us at our own game. It'd be infuriating if a lot of these guys
weren't so good at reminding us what is great, what is unique,
what is all
but indescribable in American music: Neil Young, The Band,
Cowboy Junkies,
even Godspeed You Black Emperor. And the quaint, cheeky but
unassuming
Royal City can claim ancestry in all of them. And while the band's
propaganda makes needy references to lo-fi lords of all they
survey like
Smog and the Palace guard, it'd be disingenuous to chalk Royal
City's music
up to a set of guys whose main goal in making their art is to
confound and
be as contrarian as Bill Callahan or Will Oldham..."
