The 7-piece Lambchop lineup provided original music for a
screening of F.W. Murnau's silent film "Sunrise" at the Castro
Theater as part of the San Francisco International Film Festival.
There was not a lot of advance press for this event, but
apparently Lambchop was selected based upon the
recommendation of Mac MacCaughan of Superchunk (who were
last year's performers).
Anyhow, the interesting thing about Lamchop's performance this
year was that they chose to mix instrumental pieces and new
songs with lyrics. At least I think they were mostly new songs, as
the only one I recognized was "Puppy and the Leaf". The songs
with lyrics didn't seem to be directly linked with the film, but it was
hard to really take in the lyrics while trying to follow what was
happening on screen. Some of the instrumental pieces were
used more than once to tie segments of the film together. I know
I heard the melody of "Puppy and the Leaf" a few different times.
Some of it was quiet and pretty, some stuff a little more uptempo
and rockin, and there was one noisy segment (courtesy of Marx
and Nevers) during the climactic storm scene in the film. All told,
it went over pretty well.
And the show was recorded, so perhaps it will turn up as a Tour
CD in the future. It would be cool to hear those new songs again.
