**** Thanks Michelle. Word about this spread quickly yesterday afternoon. I have
to admit that I actually witnessed that first "parade" in '79 from Kennedy Park,
just down from my parent's
place at that time at 112th Artesian, right across from St. Cajetans.

Though it's been several years since we last attended the parade, I was at most
of the prior parades. Over the years the amount of people coming for the parade
has just gotten too big for the neighborhood, resulting in all the documented
issues, as well as from what I hear, insurance concerns. Life will go on and
it'll be interesting to see what the Parade Committee may come up with as a
possible alternative next year. Whatever it is, hopefully it will put the focus
back on Irish Heritage, as well as being beneficial to the Larkin & Moran
Brothers Band. : ) See ya!

That'll be 3 'Our Fathers' and 3 'Hail Marys' for you Mister! ; )

Brother Mike's Musings...by Mike Larkin... ' A misquote from my 8 year old son
who felt sick to his stomach and announced from the back of the van- "I'm not
going to make it Daddy, I feel very obnoxious..."

Hellooo Everyone----

(Mike- Are you sure that wasn't Joe on his recent illness???) Great to be back.
One last March show to go this month and then it is off to the Betty Ford Clinic
to dry out for awhile. We will be at the Tourney 4 Tommy benefit on Sunday
March 29 at about 1(ish- give or take). It is at St Rita High School at 7700 S
Western Ave in Chicago and build as a South Side Tradition. Web site-
(http://www.tourney4tommy.com/)

All Things Must Pass--

Speaking of South Side Tradition - hot off the wires - if you didn't hear the
South Side Irish Parade Committee announced today on their web site
(www.southsideirishparade.org/) that the parade which has been in existence
since 1979 and attracts an estimate 300,000 people will no longer happen. It
also says 'in it's present form' but I'm really not sure what that means.

For most South Side Chicagoans this is pretty big news.

Now I wasn't one of the few who walked down Washtenaw and Talman Ave in
decorated shopping carts in 1979 but from probably 1981 until the band started I
went to most of them. A couple of memories:

Pulling my young kids (including Dan Jr) in a wagon in a partcularly cold year
in two inches of snow along 103rd Street toward the parade and not noticing for
50 feet that they fell off of the wagon as my wife yelled at me.

Making a decision in 1992 to move back to Chicago from Cheese head land because
I thought to myself on 105th & Western, 'What the hell am I doing in
Wisconsin?!?'

Since the band started the parade was another March vehicle for gigs during
parade day. The last six or seven years have been particularly pleasent as we
have been playing a back yard party after the parade and having a blast. It was
the only place you could play for cops and fireman from Chicago, New York,
Boston, Philly, Denver and everyone have a great time. There are good pictures
from last year's show (including a couple great ones of Murph) on our web site
and I'll post some soon from 2009.

We also have been associated for the last 4 years with the Committee's Preparade
Party (Dan's inner voice to Dan... Hey- stupid they paid in cash this year!)
...er..a I mean in the past.. yeah before 2009....

I heard a committee member on the radio saying that something else will be
planned but who knows. Personally I think we need to associate ourselves at the
only other South Side Tradition of a Parade - The Bud Billiken Parade...

Yeah that has a nice tone to it...let me know what you think.

Slainte,

Usually Forannyboy's area of posting stories like this...but thought I would
post here.
I never went and it seems people in area - comments are positive on it ending
because just too many people now? But I think kind of weird to just end...

From Chicago Tribune breaking news:
South Side Irish St. Patrick's Parade ending
March 25, 2009
Organizers of the South Side Irish St. Patrick's Day Parade on Western Avenue
said today they would no longer hold the event "in its present form."

Mary Beth Sheehan, a spokeswoman for the parade, said the decision was not the
result of any specific incident. She said, "It's a cumulative thing. We have a
small, wonderful neighborhood here. Mashing 300,000 people in here is a little
too much for this neighborhood."

Sheehan said the parade's organizing committee voted on the matter Tuesday
night.

Parade organizers announced the decision today on their Web site, stating that
the committee is "not planning to stage a parade in its present form."

Sheehan said organizers are already considering ideas for other ways to
celebrate St. Patrick's Day next year and are open to ideas from the public.

"We're listening," she said.

The parade had been held since 1979. This year it was held on Sunday, March 15.

Just reading that RedEYE (Chicago Tribune tabloid daily)
and I see half page ad!

Friday March 6
5-10 PM
Navy Pier

STARRING
Larkin & Moran Brothers

also The Weber Band - who are they?
and Chancey Brothers - yes heard of them.

General admission $40 (45 at door)
Michael Collins VIP Lounge 60 (65 at door)

I went back around 2000 I think when it was Brigid's Cross, Fenians,
then Prodigals. $40 seemed like a lot and I think I had like 2
beers. Haven't gone since.
Not that I haven't wanted to - just hasn't worked out.

This year I am off work until next Thursday - my parents on vacation
in Mexico - nice I know. I get my girls and LOTS of errands. Fri
night is too difficult.
I am hoping to do March 14 shows, but not 100% sure.

Anyway, safe travels to all to and from shows!

**** Thanks for your show report Michelle. So glad you were able to
get out for a fun evening amongst friends and great music. As far as
your pics from Sat. night, besides those, have you seen the "Scrap
Book" link on Ballydoyle's website for the L&M show? I see you made
it on stage and apparently won a t-shirt. Nice job! Lots of other
good pics from the show reflecting the festive evening are there
too. : )

p.s. As for the Celticratpack website, my work computer has a filter
that thinks it's a mischievous site (rimshot) ; )

Little recap for Saturday night:
Overall what a fun night!
Great to see other fans like Colleen, Julieann/Keith, etc...
Nice meeting Kerry, Beth, and others....
Really love Ballydoyle and Phil - always have a terrific time there.
Did talk to Phil and Aurora location has Guinness sign up and Phil
plans opening next year - he did not say date. But hoping to have
some favorite bands play both places around St Patrick's Day - he
mentioned Scythian. I would guess others like Seven Nations and even
our Larkins maybe? I can't say I have ever been to Aurora but I
would try to get out there sometime!

All the usual great songs. A great version of Santa Claus is Coming
to Town (Springsteen version) toward the end.
I took a couple of notes in my cell phone. Saw Doctors song Usta
Love Her - something sounded off?
Leaving of Liverpool - I know I have heard a couple of times....why
so slow?
I took a short video clip of Rattlin Bog on my phone and sent to Mike
Cleveland. He enjoyed it.
Dan - we missed you but I know how busy everything is these days!

I took some pics I will try to post here one of these nights....

And we discussed next show and I think nothing until January? No New

As we all know the economy stinks this year and the UNITED STATES
MARINES have alot of trees to try and put presents under. I have asked
my kids to take the money they were going to spend on me and buy toys
for the Toys for Tots program. Please reach into your pockets and souls
and give to a child this year. I may not have everything I want, but I
do have what I need. How many of us out there can ask ourselves, "Why
not ask for this instead of a gift for me?" I implore all of you to
please think this over and do the right thing. Our Lord gave to us and
now it is our turn to "pay it forward" Thank you for listening and may

It is going to be really fun to top last weekend with the Dooleys,
Chanceys, Makems and Spains but we'll try damn it! This Black
Wednesday November 26th we will be at the Kerry Piper
(www.kerrypiper.com) in Willowbrook at 9 PM. A big thank you to
Kathleen O'Connor and the Chicago Irish Pub Meet Up Group for
promoting this (http://celticmusic.meetup.com/113/).

Then to top the weekend off on Black Friday we will be at 115 Bourbon
St (www.115bourbonstreet.com) for the annual Ignite The Ignite the
Spirit Southside Kickoff 2009 Calendar Party
(www.ignitethespirit.org) . It's a great deal since $30 gets you
dinner, drinks, door prizes, us and more! Proceeds go to a great
cause sponsored by the Chicago Fire Department.

Stories From Last Weekend

All I can say is- Wow what a great weekend! The Tribute to Tommy
Makem was a success raising money for the Tommy and Mary Makem Fund
in direct Support of the American Cancer Society. Shay Clarke of
Blarney Everything Irish (and the Irish American News) also donated
20% of the profit from the Jewelry he sold at the show on Saturday.

Best Joke - Mike's quip about the three insane asylum in Ireland was
good, Shay Clarke had a few good stories, Mickey Spain's joke about
his Asian lineage was better but the best Joke of the weekend goes to
Tadgh O'Reilly- Manager at Gaelic Park.

It is the story of an Irish woman who fall in love with a pet skunk
and almost takes the advice of her husband to smuggle the skunk in
her britches on a visit to Ireland.

Ask what she should do about the smell her husband replies, ' If the
skunk dies it dies..' (Rim Shot) but seriously folks I'll be here all
weekend, try the veal.

Best Song- I guess it goes without saying that it was Rory Makem
singing, My Old Man at Saturday's show. Rory was his father's on
stage partner for the last 20 years of his life.

Best Improv Song after the Shows - Bob McNamara (of the Chancey
Brothers) and Liam Spain singing 'Thunder Road at the 5th Province
Pub late night on Saturday.

Best Line - Rory Makem commented that while his mother wanted her
sons to get a job like an Electrician or a Plumber they all told
their dad Tommy that when they grew up the wanted to be folk singers
to which Tommy replied, ' You can't do both...'

A big thank you to Bob McNamara of the Chancey Brothers for putting
this all together.

Speaking of Jewelers

While I mentioned Shay earlier in the blog my cousin Brian Callahan
asked me to relay this message in time for Christmas. Now mind you I
only do this for relatives - Brian Callahan, President, Private

Now that the cold and flu season has officially arrived, here are
some words and wisdom from writer Dave Barry that the Band members
here might even heed (and given the lousy economy, we all need to heed
more often):

"Some people think the way to avoid colds is to eat a lot of vitamin C,
something on the order of nine billion pentagrams a day. My wife
believes in this approach. She's always choking down vitamin C pills,
which are the size of toaster ovens. She gets colds anyway. My approach
is to drink large quantities of beer. It seems to work. Since I started
drinking large quantities of beer, I have not had one cold that I can
remember clearly."

The Smiths were unable to conceive children and decided to use a surrogate father to start their family. On the day the proxy father was to arrive, Mr. Smith kissed his wife goodbye and said, 'Well, I'm off now. The man should be here soon.'
Half an hour later, just by chance, a door-to-door baby photographer happened to ring the doorbell, hoping to make a sale. 'Good morning, Ma'am', he said, 'I've come to...'
'Oh, no need to explain,' Mrs. Smith cut in, embarrassed, 'I've been expecting you.'
'Have you really?' said the photographer. 'Well, that's good. Did you know babies are my specialty?'
'Well that's what my husband and I had hoped. Please come in and have a seat'.
After a moment she asked, blushing, 'Well, where do we start?'
'Leave everything to me. I usually try two in the bathtub, one on the couch, and perhaps a couple on the bed. And sometimes the living room floor is fun. You can really spread out there.'
'Bathtub, living room floor? No wonder it didn't work out for Harry and me!'
'Well, Ma'am, none of us can guarantee a good one every time. But if we try several different positions and I shoot from six or seven angles, I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results.'
'My, that's a lot!', gasped Mrs. Smith.
'Ma'am, in my line of work a man has to take his time. I'd love to be In and out in five minutes, but I'm sure you'd be disappointed with that.'
'Don't I know it,' said Mrs. Smith quietly.
The photographer opened his briefcase and pulled out a portfolio of his baby pictures. 'This was done on the top of a bus,' he said.
'Oh, my God!' Mrs. Smith exclaimed, grasping at her throat.
'And these twins turned out exceptionally well - when you consider their mother was so difficult to work with.'
'She was difficult?' asked Mrs. Smith.
'Yes, I'm afraid so. I finally had to take her to the park to get the job done right. People were crowding around four and five deep to get a good look'
'Four and fi ve deep?' said Mrs. Smith, her eyes wide with amazement.
'Yes', the photographer replied. 'And for more than three hours, too. The mother was constantly squealing and yelling - I could hardly concentrate, and when darkness approached I had to rush my shots. Finally, when the squirrels began nibbling on my equipment, I just had to pack it all in.'
Mrs. Smith leaned forward. 'Do you mean they actually chewed on your, uh...equipment?'
'It's true, Ma' am, yes.. Well, if you're ready, I'll set-up my tripod and we can get to work right away.'
'Tripod?'
'Oh yes, Ma'am. I need to use a tripod to rest my Canon on. It's much too big to be held in the hand very long.'
Mrs. Smith fainted

No, this isn't a quote from herself, "Holy Foley." But rather
from none other than the suave, debonnaire, and obviously super
intelligent, insightful, and quite often brilliant himself,
the Main Man and keen observer of all things on the Irish scene,
Mr. Seamus (Shay) Clarke.** The subject quote was lifted from his
"Raised on Songs and Stories" column from the current edition of
the 'Irish American News' paper. It can be read in its entirety by
accessing the on-line edition at: http://www.irishamericannews.com

Click the link beneath the pic of Old St. Patrick's Church, then
click on the Nov. 2008 to open the current edition. Scroll to Shay's
column on p.31 and enjoy all of his comments/views. : )

***********
On a poignant note, please note on p.20 the piece entitled "Leave's
On A Happy Note - Mike Murphy's Last CD." Jarring to see the irony
in the Band's name and the CD's title given the sad circumstances
involved. But uplifting to read that a portion of the proceeds from
the new CD's sales will benefit Mike's Music Scholarship Fund.
Details to purchase the CD on-line are listed in the article which
also notes that the CD will be available for on-site purchase at
Larkin and Moran Brothers' shows. Nice job guys.

Dan

** I swear Shay didn't pay me to write that. ; )

There has been an email and posting at one of my groups so posting
here as well:

I know I saw an emailing saying that Grouply.com is bad. Here is
some information. I would delete any emails and NOT join. Any
postings here will be deleted and the member will be banned.

From Yahoo Answers:
IDENTIFY THEFT AT GROUPLY.COM

There is a message going out to different Yahoo Groups advertising
and suggesting that you join a new group called GROUPLY. This group
claims to help manage all your Yahoo groups and you will get a
summary, at the end of the day, telling you what is going on in all
your groups.

IF YOU JOIN THIS GROUP, they use your Yahoo ID and password to
post "mass mailings" (can be junk, can be porn) and send them to
anyone, and since it's YOUR ID they are using, others will think it
is
coming from you.

For instance, you could get an email CLAIMING that it came from
"amystica3" Yahoo group and it really is not from this group. I could
get an email, with this mass mailing, claiming it came from me, and
it would NOT have been from me.

Again, IF YOU HAVE JOINED THIS GROUP called "GROUPLY" IMMEDIATELY
leave Grouply. Then go into your account at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups and change your password. Some
groups have posted that this will help. Unsubbing from that group
won't make a difference (but I think you will want to then possibly
rejoin) but you DO NEED TO CHANGE YOUR YAHOO PASSWORD.

By joining this group you have also exposed all your groups, group
members and group leaders to hacking of their emails and group
information.

Because of this problem, some groups are removing all members with
a email grouply.com. This is the only way to protect all the members.

This is how Identity theft gets going. They now have your real
email, your yahoo emails, any emails listed in your yahoo group and
can mail as you in and out of the yahoo groups.

I hope you understand what is happening and will take precautions
to protect your Yahoo ID.

I have also heard that grouply.com sells your information once
they have it.

Brother Mike's Musings... by Mike Larkin..."The last election I was
in was for home-room student council representative. We put our heads
down on our desks, the teacher asked us to raise our hand. I voted
for my best friend. And after it was over, I said, `Well, you voted
for me, right?' He said, `No, I didn't.'... He won by one vote...."

Helllooo all.....

I have no shows this weekend to report but remember the ones we have
in November (listed later in the blog).

We are on less than a week from the 2008 presidential election and
I'm still not sure which way to vote.

The last time I was really sure who to vote for was for the St Denis
Grammer School's student government elections in the 1970s. There
was an office called Commisioner of Religion.

Although there were many more 'popular' students running, the office
went to one of the nicest girl in the class (by a landslide margin)
who also happened to be very pius. Her name was Margaret Foley but
more importantly her nickname was 'Holy' Foley.

To me and many other students this was no brainer but ever since then
elections for me have not been that obvious.

Take this presidential election.

On the one hand you have an old war hero with and Irish name who is
married to a pretty woman many years younger than him and she happens
to own a very profitable liquor distributorship. This made it
obvious to Mike and Terry.

On the other hand you have fellow fellow southside Chicagoan who is a
Sox fan but more importantly (and this was key to Joe and Kevin) the
only candidate to ever receive an endorsement from Oprah Winfrey.

For me I just wish someone was running with an obvious name like
George Washington. Or better someone with a name like a 'Holy'
Foley, perhaps someone with a name like Perez I. Dent....

Congrats to Dan Vann

Quick shout out Dan Vann who is getting married tomorrow. Dan has
been an intregal part of much of the graphic design of the Larkin and
Moran Brothers beginning with the 'Live at the Kerry Piper CD in
2000' to the current web site design. Congrats Dan!!!
