D Yellow Swans and Jim Alteri - Drowning Yellow Swans (CDR) - Carbon
Records $8.00

connecting, connecting, click.............
Joe+N - 35 trips around the sun (CDR) - Carbon Records $6.00
heavy-ass guitar piece, powering this hunk of rock around the sun,

glimmer of hope cutting thru the heavy dark matter.
Bjerga / Iversen - buring the light at both ends (CDR) - Carbon
Records $8.00
36+ min of desperate transmissions from a desolate place. a
collaboration including Sindre Bjerga, the man behind the amazing Gold

Alvarius B - Blood Operatives of Barium Street (LP) - Abduction $15.00
"It's been seven years since we heard the last Alvarius B record
(Alan Bishop/Sun City Girls), and Blood Operatives of the Barium
Sunset is the third released thus far. This is a collection of songs
seemingly based on actual, but unnamed shady characters of the global
underworld past and present, according to the brief statement on the
insert. Regardless of intent, this is cryptic folk music of the
highest order, with several tracks employing folk/rock/psych
orchestrations featuring the talents of Eyvind Kang, Tim Young,
Richard Bishop, Andrew McGinnis and Randall Dunn. Twisted Americana
folklore breeds with baroque Italian cinematic pop, dark ballads, and
vagrant story lines. Eleven unique and varied tracks and the most
"produced" Alvarius B record to date. This is a limited edition one-
time pressing of 1000 vinyl LPs with lyric sheet insert."
Bardo Pond - Selections: Volumes I-IV (2CD) - ATP Recordings $17.00
"Following their 2003 ATP release On The Ellipse, Philadelphia indie-
psych drone masters Bardo Pond return with a new offering comprised
of rare unreleased tracks that have previously only been available in
limited numbers as CD-Rs at the band's live shows. Selections is the
band's seventh full-length release, and documents the highlights of
their career, re-mastered and repackaged by ATP. Formed in 1989 by
brothers John and Michael Gibbons, Bardo Pond is one of the most
seriously underrated bands of the past few years and Selections is no
exception to their mesmerizing work. Both heavy and intense, the
album possesses a hypnotic spell that lures you into a psychedelic
lair and always leaves you wanting more"
Bardo Pond / Buck Paco - Bog/Pushed Out Into The Sun (LP) - Black
September Press $14.00
"Philly psych-monster Bardo Pond's side-long 18 minute track 'Bog'
with Detroit ex-patriot Buck Paco's Earth-meets-Skullflower '6 Months
to the Day' and 'Pushed Out into the Sun (Pts I & II)'. A total of 38
minutes of music, these songs are exclusive to this release. Strictly
limited to 600 copies, pressed on 140g vinyl with silkscreened covers."
Bastard Noise - Sound Engine (CD) - PacRec $8.00
"All sounds by Wiese / Wood"
Bastard Noise - live in Japan (CD) - Helicopter $8.00
"all sounds by Wiese & Wood post-production by John Wiese"
Devillock - these graves (CD) - SNSE $8.00
"DEVILLOCK: It’s all in stop motion. It’s all real. Up, out from
under all places molded and GUNKED. Slithering spool tapes sliding
like thin brown snakes under, amongst, and finally overtop and
around. They overtake the crumbling corpsed-up organ grinder. He,
with his grin full of rot and fingers of stank, is ever so pleased to
allow the decayed magnetics to engulf his skeletal frame, it is how
his power is attained (maintained). Only when wrapped tightly and
over his entire torso and head (a tape mummy!) will he begin to play.
Quietly at first, as if from a distance - but he is there, RIGHT
THERE GODDAMIT - and then the groan and the moaning howl and the
static insects all begin to draw near, an orchestra of loneliness.
Can you still feel your legs? As your head is slowly filled with
ants, you are posed a question: “What do you make?” he is asking.
“What do make... of THESE GRAVES?” DEVILLOCK is Justin Chris Meyers
on organ, tapes, and electronics. Justin also runs the reco
rd and tape label Tone Filth and has other additional musical
projects including Panther Skull. Matthew St. Germain (Freedom From
record label) plays bass on the first track of These Graves. Pete
Swanson (D Yellow Swans) mastered this album."
Eyes and Arms of Smoke - A Religion of Broken Bones (LP) - Cenotaph
$15.00
"Eyes and Arms of Smoke are: Trevor Tremaine, Ellen Mollé, Sara
O’Keefe and Robert Beatty. From Nicholasville, KY, Eyes and Arms of
Smoke began as a project of Trevor Tremaine, who compiles vast
influences in a unique songwriting style. Joined by Mollé’s viola and
O’Keefe’s clarinet, the group is rounded out by Beatty’s synthesizer,
percussion and other little instruments. Their earlier releases
showcase the improvised, atmospheric elements of Eyes and Arms of
Smoke, but A Religion of Broken Bones is focused more on the
songwriting, with lyrics providing a hazy foundation for each musical
gesture."
FM3 - Buddha Machine (OTHER) - Staalplaat $23.00
2nd edition now available! A unique 'soundbox' from China,
distributed via Staalplaat. A totally dazzling item which causes jaw-
dropping delight everywhere -- Alan Bishop bought twenty-four of
these on sight, Brian Eno bought eight (how's that for apocalyptical
math?). Kind of like a little AM radio, but without all the nonsense
-- total genius from out of nowhere. More info/pictures at:
www.fm3.com.cn. Comes with 2 x AA (Chinese) batteries. "Fm3 is
opening a new special series of Staalplaat. The Buddha Machine is a
small soundbox made in China which comes with an integrated speaker,
a volume control, mini jack-out and a switch to choose between nine
different loops which are stored on a small chip and can be directly
played by this mini soundsystem. A number of other artists will
continue this series soon."
GOD - Anti-Sex Anti-Wiretapping (made in Taiwan) (CD) - Little
Enjoyer $8.00
"Mysterious Portland, OR duo. This here is heavy. Cables coming apart
and shit." - The SNSE
Heathen Prayers - improvisation #3 (3inch CDR) - h-p imprint $6.00
"it hit a spot that hadn't been hit in some time. Reminiscent of
Loren Connors, Sander's blues inflected electric guitar is perhaps
even more sparse, beautiful, and melancholy. 5 trks that search out
the depth of night. Packaged in translucent handmade paper." -
PseudoArcana
Hive Mind - Tunnel Birth (2LP) - PacRec $20.00
"analogue synths and effects, recorded in the empty cellar. Sides 1
and 2 - originally released as a C30 on Chondritic Sound (CH-26).
Sides 3 and 4 - previously released as bonus tracks on the Tunnel
Birth cdr (Chondritic Sound CH-41)." this monster is 2LP, in gatefold
cover, spray-painted/splattered and silkscreened, amazing stuff!!!
Iovae - Civilization (CD) - SNSE $8.00
"Edition of 420, pro-printed on textured cardstock, clear jewel case
Iovae is Ron Orovitz, Cincinnati resident and purveyor of thuddingly
strange and scientific noise compositions. Since 1988, Ron has been
using turntables, tapes, four track recorders, various sound testing
equipment and unconventional rhythm devices (including machine guns
and firecrackers,) to establish the Iovae sound. On Civilization, the
customized oscillator stack (affectionately referred to by its
creator as The Grinder,) is seriously worked over, barfing up the
heavy drones and piercing ear splitters, all sprayed down with a
thick layer of buzzing fuzz and sputter. It is a dense and
psychedelic work. Outside of Iovae, Ron is a member of the long-
running Art Damage radio program and also pulls duty in the twerked
“rock” band Death Beam. Iovae has shared collaborative releases with
Mammal and Burning Star Core. He has had multiple CDR releases
including some on C. Spencer Yeh’s Drone Disco imprint, as w
ell as on John Olson’s (Wolf Eyes, Dead Machines,) American Tapes
label. One of the most impressive of these prior releases,
Quartervois, was reissued in proper CD format by the German
experimental music label Zarek in 2004. Civilization is Iovae’s
second pro-pressed CD release and SNSE is honored to present it to you."
John Wiese - Magical Crystal Blah (CDR) - Helicopter $8.00
John Wiese - Arrhythmia Wave Burst and Panner Crash (3inch CD) -
Helicopter $8.00
John Wiese and Daniel Menche - behold the scathing light (3inch CD) -
Helicopter $8.00
Juniper Meadows - Grand Sonora (3inch CDR) - imvated $6.00
"hesitant banjo and ukulele pluckings, bowed strings and the soothing
wheeze of one of my very favourite instruments the melodica. Sounds
like it was improvised late at night under the stars. Gorgeous. Comes
in a full-sized spraypainted jewelcase"
Konono No.1 - Congotronics (LP) - Ache $12.00
Limited LP version of the 2004 Crammed Disc CD release. "Konono N°1
was founded over twenty-five years ago by Mingiedi, a virtuoso of the
likembé (a traditional instrument sometimes called 'sanza' or 'thumb
piano,' consisting of metal rods attached to a resonator). The band's
line-up includes three electric likembés (bass, medium and treble),
equipped with hand-made microphones built from magnets salvaged from
old car parts and plugged into amplifiers. There's also a rhythm
section which uses traditional as well as makeshift percussion (pans,
pots and car parts), three singers, three dancers and a sound system
featuring megaphones dating from the colonial period. Instead of
apologizing for the heavily distorted sounds of such DIY
amplification, Konono N°1 have embraced them, provoking a radical
mutation of their sound, and has accidentally connected them with the
aesthetics of today's most underground forms of music as much through
their sounds as through their sheer volume (
they play in front of a wall of speakers) and merciless grooves.
Hailing from Africa and rooted in a very social form of folk music-
making, Konono N°1 is one of the main exponents of a spectacular
style of music which has developed in the suburbs of the capital city
of Kinshasa. The Congolese refer to this style as 'tradi-modern,'
meaning electrified traditional music. These are musicians who have
left the bush to settle in the capital and, in order to both continue
fulfilling their social role and make themselves heard above the
urban din, they have resorted to DIY amplification of their
instruments, and the use of megaphones."
Lovely Midget - untitled (10inch) - Ecstatic Peace $8.00
Debut 5-song EP by New Zealand's Rachel Shearer. Utilizing post-
Xpressway murk-burrowing techniques, this features a dense sound of
vocals, guitar, organ, synthesizer & drums. "Lovely Midget is the
project of Rachel Shearer. Recording & performing history begins in
Port Chalmer/Otago, New Zealand, where in a huge old house the group
Angelhead (w/ Michael Morley, Stella Corkery & Deborah Hindin) live
and played. Angelhead released a cassette on Xpressway. Moving north
to Auckland meant participation with girl rock band Queen Meanie Puss
(w/ Stella Corkery, Deborah Hindin & Dieneke Jansen), releasing
singles w/ Flying Nun & Siltbreeze. Relocation in 1992 to Cologne,
Germany where at the club 'Underground', trained as a live sound
technician & performed solo as Fischmunt -- using tape loops, sampler
& guitar, Fischmunt appeared on a compilation of local acts on
Cologne label Finlayson Tontrager. South seas return in Dec. 95 was
the beginning of Lovely Midget."
Magik Markers - NxCxHxC Vol.1 (LP) - No Label $14.00
"Early Markers compiled here in sort of a 'best-of' retrospective.
This band has won more than it has lost playing with Dinosaur Jr,
Sonic Youth and Sunburned Hand Of The Man. Chaotic, joyful, moving
and stunning, the Markers are really one of the best outfits of the
21st Century thus far."
NEUNG PHAK - Fucking USA (7inch) - Abduction $8.00
"Oakland, CA-based Neung Phak are hit-playing Southeast Asian psych-
pop fusion artpranksters. Their exotic alter ego Mono Pause shares
members with absurdist cut-and-paste legends Negativland. When
Pyongyang Airlines flight 009 from North Korea landed at San
Francisco International Airport, the members of Neung Phak stepped
defiantly onto the tarmac -- clutching the master tapes of their
compelling new single Fucking USA, which were rushed to Abduction
records for immediate release. This is the first recording ever made
by "Americans" in Pyongyang's Kim Studios -- and it shows! The
extended play B-side features a new version of the Thai classic "Tui
Tui Tui" and a journey into experimental pop balladry that is second
to none -- a radio friendly "Far King USA." This vibrant explosion of
color and hatred comes dressed to kill in a beautiful package on the
thickest vinyl there is. Neung Phak backsides the forefront once
again! Edition of 300 copies, thick vinyl, and full-color p
icture sleeve!"
Niellerade Fallibilisthorstar - Halrum (CD) - SNSE $8.00
Edition of 425, pro-printed on textured cardstock, clear jewel case
CD version of Hĺlrum runs about 6 minutes longer than the LP and
presents the work in its uninterupted entirety. "Beautiful career-
spanning collection of outside musical thought from this Swedish
sound-collective, with two sides of collaged pieces that span
clattering sounds-of-the-junkyard noise improvisations, the bells of
ghost ships long lost to the tide, beautiful Gregorian/choral tones,
fractured jump-cuts that bring to mind Nurse With Wound circa Spiral
Insana and A Salt Marie Celeste and moments of joyous free-folk
blurt. Recorded between 2001-2004, this makes for some beautiful deep-
listening and should suit fans of early Ghost, Nurse With Wound,
Asmus Tietchens, Einsturzende Neubauten, The New Blockaders, David
Jackman, Keiji Haino and The No-Neck Blues Band. ... you get the
feeling this one is gonna be a major item in years to come. Highly
recommended." Volcanic Tongue mailorder
Panther Skull - Slothwave (CD) - SNSE $8.00
"Edition of 446, pro-printed on textured cardstock, clear jewel case
Spoiled gunk tape roll with the organ heave and moan. The howl. This
is bleak and this is zoned. Might as well plug and blow out your nose
as hard as you can for 25 minutes straight. Panther Skull is Justin C
Meyers (Devillock, Tone Filth label). Slothwave is Panther Skull’s
debut CD."
Rats with Wings - Black Label (7inch) - Humbug $10.00
"A rare handpressed lathe-cut 7” of this amazing new-zealandish
experimental ambient-noise project on Humbug, with waving shortwave-
noise."
Rodd Keith - saucers in the sky (CD) - roaratorio $14.00
"Rodney Keith Eskelin, aka Rodd Keith, aka Rod Rogers, would've
certainly found the recognition during his lifetime that his talent
demanded, if he hadn't chosen to work in the lowest depths of the
music industry: the "send us your lyrics" field, known today as the
song-poem genre. SAUCERS IN THE SKY gathers together twenty-six
previously uncollected Rodd Keith gems from the hundreds upon
hundreds of songs that he recorded before he leapt from a highway
overpass in 1974. It would be inaccurate to call this a collection of
forgotten pop classics. "Forgotten" implies that they were known in
the first place. Outside of the aspiring lyricists who bankrolled the
proceedings, plus a few of their friends and relations, none of Rodd
Keith's records registered the slightest blip on the musical radar of
their time. The irony runs deep: the song-poem business was a stylus'
breadth away from being an outright scam, capitalizing on the dreams
of would-be songwriters and filling their head
s with visions of breakout hits and fame and fortune. In reality, if
the lyrics themselves weren't unwieldy or strange enough to hobble
any chances of entering the charts with a bullet, the assembly line
production style of the recording insured that the majority of the
songs were musically undistinguished. The best of Rodd Keith's work,
however, easily transcends its lowly, no-hope origins, and therein
lies the kicker: if the pressing runs for songs like "Magic In Her
Eyes" or "Go Go Girlie" had broken the triple digit mark, or found
their first point of sale in a Sam Goody rather than a thrift shop,
they could've undoubtedly attained some measure of the popular
success that their hapless creators were led to believe would follow.
And while such tunes as "Ravens" or "Sawdust" were too lyrically bent
for Billboard glory, they remain prime examples of Rodd's brilliance
as a singer, composer and arranger. SAUCERS IN THE SKY also includes
two never-before-released tracks: a cov!
er of "Here Comes The Judge" from a soul-soundalike session, and
"Get On My Honda, Rhonda," written as a birthday gift for Rodd's best
friend's son. Packaged in a mini-LP gatefold sleeve, with liner notes
from Del Casher, inventor of the wah-wah pedal and guitarist on many
of Rodd's early recordings, and Stacey Keith, Rodd's daughter. "
Sea Donkeys - Volume 1 (LP) - Abduction $15.00
"This is the debut recording from an anonymous Seattle outfit of
assembled misfits, sub-criminals, and castaways. Jettisoning down the
fast current from the foggy low tides just off the glossy-lipped
pucker, this renegade band of pirate fuck-me-naughts slip into the
dead stream with unwitting direction, abandoning tired navigational
tools for a less reliable fate. Imagine the Manson Family singing on
a sinking ghost galleon sippin' salt water, willing to go down, down
with the ship. Originally hatched on a decrepit boat, where some of
these tracks were recorded on soupy nights till dawn upon the Puget
Sound, the Sea Donkeys patrol the uncharted waters smuggling Barbary
coast psychedelia into northern ports for their infrequent role as
Lord Summerisle's house band. Edition of 300 copies on 180 gram vinyl
with insert."
Steven R. Smith - Crown of Marches (CD) - catsup plate $10.00
"Steven R. Smith is best known for his participation in Thuja and
Hala Strana as well as his contribution to many Jewelled Antler
projects. Until now, however, his recordings under his own name have
remained somewhat under the radar. In Thuja, Smith and his
compatriots built up delicate soundscapes by improvising on whatever
happened to be nearby—traditional musical instruments, hand-built
sound makers, and ordinary objects. In Hala Strana, on the other
hand, Smith focused more on existing compositions—usually evoking
Eastern European folk melodies—and employed more traditional set of
instruments. Crown of Marches—his debut for Catsup Plate—is a single,
epic, forty-minute track: Smith balances the composed and the
improvisational and the result is as ecstatic, beautiful and
compelling as music can get. In the spirit of Keiji Haino, Popol Vuh,
Dead C, and Flying Saucer Attack, Crown of Marches takes the
possibilities of the basement psychedelic guitar excursion and
fashions so
mething very new and inspiring—a piece alternately beautiful and
overwhelming. Crown of Marches begins with a low rumble of feedback
and speaker hum; a lazy eastern melody pokes through the haze and
establishes a strong contrast with the rumbling. This is the basis
upon which the piece will expand and contract over the next 40
minutes. At times the feedback rumble drops away and relatively
bright guitar lines come to the fore. At other times faint keyboard
lines or bowed cymbals add texture and additional gravitas to the
proceedings, only to be pushed away with the wail of distant guitars
and more distortion—like the heaviest rock with the skeleton removed.
The feedback eventually drops away, leaving moments of only bells and
the warmth of roomtone. And so the piece goes, rising and falling,
until, at the end, we are left with the initial set of rumble and
lazy melodies peaking through the haze. In the end, Smith brings us
full-circle through chaos, melody and intensity and !
deposits us back into the world. Edition of 1000 copies in hand
assembled, black over white on black silkscreened digipaks. Catsup
Plate's most inscrutable packaging scheme yet."
Sun City Girls - Montreal Pop (LP) - No Label $14.00
"A fabulous recording captured from the soundboard and broadcast
quality. Perhaps the best representation of the more modern period of
this band live, craziness, crowd heckling and talk of killing
children, what more could one want."
Tinnitustimulus - Various Titles (CDR) - Thunder Crap $8.00
a while ago, i got a bunch of various titles from Tinnitustimulus,
Tom Bennett, a high school kid residing in Bath NY (middle of
nowhere). this entry is actually for a random release by Tom. most of
the items he gave me were of editions of 10. some of only 2!!! so,
add this to your order, and you'll get a random, very limited
edition, hand-created/unique package/artwork in a slim-jewel case.
awesome noise, no-input mixer, feedback loop stuff. here's Tom's
description.... "tinnitustimulus is from the 'woods and likes to take
advantage of having no neighbors by wrecking stereo equipment at
signifigant volumes. most of his music is composed of feedback going
through an eq, by means of a cheap dj mixer. this creates low freq
feed, while his computer and/or amp is both inputted and outputted as
well, making high feed. then they are overdubbed on top of eachother.
it may be much more than this however, synths, mics, acoustic guitar
(bowed with plexiglass), radio interference and in
terference causers have been used occaisionally. almost always on a
high amplitude( what noise art doesn't?) this stuff real be definatly
heared when played. there has been no tinnitustimulus shows (as of
yet)."
Tivol - Early Teeth (LP) - Holy Mountain $14.00
"While the 'free folk' music boom from Finland has recently grabbed
the ears of many of this planet's less ape-eared, Holy Mountain is
more than pleased to extend a hand to the darker -- not to mention-
more rocking -- side of this contemporaneous scene. Tivol plays a
throbbing, violent and aggressive strain of acid rock that has
nothing to do with subtlety. Their already hypnotic material is
further enhanced by screamed vocals that do not seem to emanate from
this earth."
Tony Conrad with Faust - Bryant Park Moratorium Rally (1969) (CD) -
table of the elements $16.00
"An October afternoon in 1969. Midtown Manhattan. A rally in Bryant
Park against the Vietnam War. Down 42nd Street towards Times Square,
Tony Conrad is adjusting microphones in his 5th floor loft, one
directed at the TV set -- where it will pick up live local news
coverage -- the other pointing out the window, where the echo of
speeches and crowd noise mingles with the oceanic rush of crosstown
traffic. As the event is about to begin, he rolls tape. Thirty-four
years later, we hear what he heard. And the juncture, for so many
reasons, could not be more critical. As the Bush Administration
pursues a risky military agenda in the Middle East -- one with
unsettling long-term implications both at home and abroad -- we see a
nation not divided, as in the Vietnam Era, but strangely complacent.
Our media-saturated reality functions like a drug, instantly
televised warfare a new entertainment, and organized public dissent a
novelty at home and a roaring chorus everywhere else. Conrad'
s recording of the Oct. 15 Vietnam Moratorium Rally is an eerie
flashback that offers urgent new insights into our own lives and
times, post-9/11 and full on into a new millennium."
Tovah Olson - s/t (CDR) - Bennifer Editions $10.00
"you've heard of Dead Machines and WW/Vv, don't front like you don't
want this. 7"x14" marbled and screened foldover with illustration by
Mark "Turbo" Pellegrino. true wide-eyed fanaticism, electronic
dervishes, michigan up in this piece!"
Vapaa - Koneitten Sirity (CDR) - imvated $8.00
"live recordings from this Finnish band who sometimes back Keijo as
the Free Players: wind-rustling forest drone and cosmische synth
drone and burbles. " - comes in spray/splatter corrugated sleeve
Various Artists - Time and Relative Dimensions in Space - long -form
works (CD) - Rebis $10.00
long-form compositions by Taurpis Tula, The Skaters, My Cat is an
Alien, Jim Haynes Number none
Various Artists - freq_out 2 (CD) - Ash International $12.00
"Freq_out is a sound installation of twelve individual audio works
which are presented as a single piece. Each artist is assigned a
frequency range with which to work. This process is carried out in
situ, each using a workstation consisting of a mixing desk and a PA
system. All the resulting compositions are then amplified together in
the space to create a sound installation or performance. The project
reveals how space-specific certain frequencies can be, but also how
other sounds can be separated from their source and "thrown" around
the space. The final mix not only reveals the innate properties of
the frequencies, but also the possibilities when they are combined.
The second freq_out CD after Ash 5.8 (2004) features the usual
suspects; curated and conducted by Carl Michael von Hausswolff,
freq_out 2 was recorded and performed for Ultima the Oslo Music
Festival 2004, by: BJ Nilsen, J. G. Thirlwell, Jacob Kirkegaard, Jana
Winderen, Maia Urstad, Kent Tankred, Finnbogi Péturs
son, Per Magnus Lindborg, Brandon LaBelle, Franz Pommasl, Mike
Harding and Tommi Grönlund & Petteri Nisunen. The recording was made
by NOTAM, mixed by BJ Nilsen at The Embassy and mastered by Denis
Blackham at Skye Mastering. Much more "ambient" than the spiky,
threatening sonic conflict of the first freq_out CD, this second
piece is evocative of an utterly still landscape."
Various Artists - Compilation Yokomono 2 (LP) - Staalplaat $17.00
"This is the second Staalplaat Soundsystem LP made for Yokomono. One
side of this record the Staalplaat Soundsystem has made 55 loops of
digital silence The deterioration and damaging will generate the
sound. Vinyl live so to say. For the other side we have invited
eleven other artist to make five loops: Anton Nikkilä, Carl Michael
von Hausswolff, Charlemagne Palestine, Christian Fennesz, fm3, Ignaz
Schick, Ilpo Vaisanen, Justin Bennett, Phill Niblock, Radian and Tim
Hecker."
Various Artists - American Primitive Vol. II - Pre-War Revenants
(1897-1939) (2CD) - Revenant $29.00
"Revenants. Phantoms. Biographical ciphers who emerged from their
anonymous dark, made 78 rpm recordings, and were promptly swallowed
up by darkness again. Yet their recordings have made an indelible
place for themselves in our world by dint of their capacity to
inspire wonder. At once a collection of secret blueprints for a raw
musics revolution and a testament to the enduring power of great art
to shock, confound, inspire and sustain. John Fahey's final curated
work for Revenant. Revenant's long-awaited follow-up to 1997's much-
saluted American Primitive Vol. I."
Various Artists - Niger: Magic & Ecstasy in the Sahel (DVD) - Sublime
Frequencies $20.00
"A celebration of life in the Sahel region of Africa, this film
showcases many of Niger's venerable music styles. Tuareg electric
guitar trance rock, Bori cult dance ceremonies, Fulani folk, and
roadhouse gospel rave-ups are some of the segments included in this
latest "folk cinema" classic from Sublime Frequencies. Filmed in
December of 2004 on location in Niger, director/editor Hisham Mayet
delivers a spontaneous, raw, and inspiring collection of images,
music, and ceremony (again with a single camera presentation) from a
nation mired in poverty and continual post-colonial disappointment.
Quoting from Mayet's liner notes: "This is not music as commodity,
this is music as survival. There is a saying in Niger that goes,
'when we die we know we are going to heaven because we already live
in Hell,' well I think it's more like the purgatory that we all live
in and they sure have managed to transcend with an incredible natural
resource: Music. Dig it!""
Various Artists - Radio Pyongyang: Commie Funk and Agit Pop... (CD) -
Sublime Frequencies $13.00
".. from the Hermit Kingdom. Schmaltzy synth-pop, revolutionary rock,
cheeky child rap, and a healthy dose of hagiography for Dear Leader
Kim Jong-Il, this is the now NOW sound of North Korea! A hermit
kingdom with a rich folk history and an even richer tradition in over-
the-top praise for the ruling House of Kim, the Democratic People's
Republic of Korea remains a diplomatic thorn and a cultural Never
Neverland. Boasting a heady mix of Stalin opera, Tokyo karaoke and
brooding impressionism, the sound of present-day Pyongyang distills
into warped agit-pop and lost-in-time commie funk. If you've ever
wondered what goes on in North Korean music, this is your vehicle for
exploration. Christiaan Virant has visited this mysterious land and
has assembled this amazing audio collage. Captured within are rare
live recordings from various performances and mass games
demonstrations, sounds lifted from People's Army television dramas,
samples from hard-to-find CD releases obtained in the
capital, and of course, news reports from the "real" Radio
Pyongyang, which continues to broadcast to this day, albeit under the
new, strikingly anodyne moniker "Voice of Korea.""
Various Artists - Guitars of the Golden Triangle: Folk and Pop
Music... (CD) - Sublime Frequencies $13.00
"...of Myanmar (Burma) Vol. 2. Follow-up to 2004's well-received
Princess Nicotine: Folk and Pop Music of Myanmar (Burma) Vol. 1. Shan
State is Myanmar's largest province and larger than the entire state
of New York -- a massive sub-tropic tableland with an average
elevation of 3,000 feet, perfect for the cultivation of poppies for
which it is well known as the center of the "Golden Triangle." Never
before presented outside a tiny minority of the Burmese community,
this unbelievable collection of garage and psychedelic rock, raw folk-
blues ballads, and country-western styled music is a product of Shan
and Pa'o musicians hailing from the early 1970s. Discover the music
of Lashio Thein Aung (aka the "Burmese Texan"), Khun Paw Yunn (a
"Black Shan" Pa'o rocker) and Saing Saing Maw: the original Shan
legend who wrote and sang garage psych-rock songs, usually backed by
a tight unit of organ, bass, drums, and perhaps the most stinging
electric guitar in Burmese history. There is lit
tle reliable information about these mysterious pioneers and most
Burmese have never even heard this material. Compiled by Alan Bishop
(Sun City Girls), the cuts on this CD are almost impossible to find
in ANY form or quality. They were transferred directly from old
cassette tapes and a few tracks have dropouts (some of them quite
severe). Most of the master tapes are thought to have been lost or
destroyed many years ago so this may be the only link to a phenomenal
"lost scene" and Sublime Frequencies is thrilled to resurrect it for
those interested in folk, rock and pop styles from lesser-known
regions of the globe."
Various Artists - Choubi Choubi! Folk & Pop Sounds from Iraq (CD) -
Sublime Frequencies $13.00
"Meticulously selected from Iraqi cassettes and LPs found in Syria,
Europe and the Iraqi neighborhoods of Detroit, Michigan, this unique
collection of folk and pop styles displays a wealth of outstanding
music that is exclusive to Iraq and has rarely been showcased abroad.
There are many reasons why Iraqi music stands alone in the dynamic
world of Arabic music: one example is the unbelievable rapid fire
machine-gun rhythms fluttering atop the main tempo. This is the work
of a unique nomadic hand drum called the khishba -- also known as the
zanbour (Arabic for "wasp"). A style prominently featured here is the
infamous Iraqi choubi -- a driving rhythmic style that can include
fiddles, double reeded instruments, percussion, bass, keyboards and
oud over its signature beat. Other styles featured are the basta (an
urban Baghdadi style), the bezikh, and the pulsating hecha. Also
heard is the mawal -- a vocal improv that sets the tone of a song,
regardless of the style. Additionally
there are three cuts from Ja'afar Hassan's 1970s record, Let's Sing
Together. Being a folk-rock record, it's a true anomaly for Iraq.
Hassan was a mouthpiece for the Iraqi Socialist movement just a few
years before Saddam Hussein. But most of the music in this collection
was produced during the Saddam period between the 1980s and 2002.
Since the 2003 invasion and the wholesale disassembly of the country,
classic tracks like these may already be part of a disappeared past."
White Light - s/t (CD) - Rebis $10.00
"Debut recording from Chicago-area duo. Punishing highs, earth-
shaking lows: a must for lovers of transcendental drone guitar."
