News:
====================
As a curator of the A|V space here in Rochester, i have a piece in
the A|V Curators Shows, which is currently on display, kicking off
our 2006 season. I've created a sculpture/object piece, which will
eventually turn into a Joe+N release. Also included in the show are
pieces by Carbon-related Chris Reeg (of the Blood and Bone
Orchestra), Andy Gilmore and David Merulla (of Autumn in Halifax) if
you're around Rochester, you can check out the show during A|V open
gallery hours - Thurs 7-10pm, Sat and Sun 10am-3pm. or you can visit
during one of the many music shows booked this month. for more
information, visit the A|V site - www.avspace.org
In addition to the very random recordings for the Carbon podcast,
i've started a new series called the CarbonSoundSystem. each week, a
new recording will be posted (available as a podcast, or manual
download) and will feature selections from the most recent additions
to the Carbon mailorder catalog, in the style of a radio show. there
are currently 5 installments available, with a new one becoming
available every friday. point your favorite podcast client (like
iTunes) to www.carbonrecords.com/podcast/ , or you can just go
there with your browser and right-click---"save-as linked file" on
the "Read more.." links... more info on podcasts down below.
the new Carbon tshirts are now available. they are a two color design
by our own Andy Gilmore. more information below. speaking of Andy, he
has been featured in the latest issue of Arkitip (http://
www.arkitip.com/). check it out.
Arthur Doyle will be doing a small tour of western NY and NYC later
this month with his Electro-Acoustic Ensemble. check out the list of
dates in the Shows section below. Carbon will also be releasing a
limited tour CDR of Arthur's solo material, all vocal works.
and lastly, the Carbon site got hacked badly last month, and as a
result, the Photos and Videos page is barely up and stumbling. i'm
working on reconstructing the collection of files. stay tuned as
sections come back online.

Most recent Carbon releases:
Pengo - Alchemy and Bullshit (2CDR) - Carbon Records $12.00
a double CDR document of Pengo's migration from a 3-piece out-spazz-
noise group to 4-piece drone-psych-noise-rock group. recordings
ranging from the 2001 Phi-Tour series, 2002 live and "studio" pieces
(including a show with guests Dave Cross of Coffee, Ed Wilcox of
Temple Bon Matin and Charles Leport of Hinkley/Finkbeiner/etc), thru
pounding live 2003/2004 sets, much in the vein of current
configuration. 2 black-bottom cdrs, glossy print insert, sealed in a
6"x8" silkscreened and spray painted chipboard mailer.
Various Artists - three.pieces (CDR) - Carbon Records $8.00
a collection of mostly out-of-print 3" releases from the festival,
all compiled on to one 5" CDR . features ~20min pieces from Andy
Gilmore, Chad Oliveiri and Joe+N. all three pieces were recorded at
visual studies workshop, rochester ny on 01.19.2002 at <init.one>.
Autumn in Halifax - Kites With Broken Strings (CDR) - Carbon Records
$8.00
autumn in halifax is "the quiet avant folk drone guitar and voice of
david merulla." and this release showcases pretty much every aspect
of that description. in addition to his amazing guitar/looping and
vocal work, he is joined on a number of tracks by various friends
from his previous stomping grounds in the San Diego (post)pop/rock
scene. David does an amazing job of mixing delicate (and catchy)
melodies and looping, with abstract sounds and textures .

CarbonHQ - Carbon.10YR.BOOK (BOOKLET and CDR) - Carbon Records $18.00
"This book tries to capture some of the graphical elements and
direction from the first 10 years of Carbon Records. Started in 1994
with the release of a Joe+N (then called Joe +4=Poopie) cassette
release (different me's), Carbon has been consuming most of my free
time and energy, and (almost) every moment has been well worth it.
I've met a bunch of amazing people, artists, fans, fellow label-
honchos, etc. Here's to another arbitrary number of years..." this is
a 20-page full-color booklet with a full-length CDR by Joe+N, paying
homage to the passage of time, and the random crap that happens in
that time.
D Yellow Swans and Jim Alteri - Drowning Yellow Swans (CDR) - Carbon
Records $8.00
28+min of swelling and dro(w)ning guitar, glitched up blips and
beeps, and ghostly vocal fragments. another amazing installment from
D Yellow Swans, with help, this time, from Jim Alteri. connecting,
connecting, connecting, click.............
Joe+N - 35 trips around the sun (CDR) - Carbon Records $6.00
heavy-ass guitar piece, powering this hunk of rock around the sun,
far too many/few times. sludging, burning up amp noise, with a
glimmer of hope cutting thru the heavy dark matter.
coming up in late 2006: Arthur Doyle, Chad Oliveiri, Hinkley, SQ,
Anthony Milton / Joe+N split, Edward Ruchalski, Pumice, Joe+N and more.

"sketch" logo and slogan on the back (also in two colors), on a
"natural" color shirt.
Hum of the Druid - Societal (LP) - SNSE $10.00
"Debut pro-pressed release from the frighteningly talented E.
Stonefelt, aka Hum of the Druid. For those familiar with his prior
limited edition and self-released cdrs, this one picks up right where
'Trials' and 'Mountainous' left off and continues to refine the
unique style of harsh crunch and spooked ambience. For the
uninitiated, HOTD's sound has been likened to being caught under an
avalanche of grit. The wall of earth rumbles in from the distance,
getting closer, a huge rush of wind before you are overtaken by half
a mountainside of rock, dirt, stick. The sound surrounds and pounds.
Finally, when left trapped under eight feet of crud, the chaos of the
slide gives way to the sound of only lungs fighting for breath, mind
drifting towards the light. No one's coming to help. This album is
released in an edition of 291 copies on black vinyl. The pasted-on
textured cardstock LP jacket and album insert both feature the
intense artwork of Mr. Stonefelt himself."
Id M Theft Able - sings: A just B (7inch) - Humbug $8.00
NOTE: this is actually a 5" lathe cut record ---- Just to make life
that little bit easier we decided to make this a separate release.....
(originally intended as a bonus for first 40 copies of the "cl amo/
ang or/er us/ et c" CDR (Humbug021), but didn't really coincide). A
total of 4 minutes of music, to be enjoyed at 45 rpm. A strangely
satisfying object! And a step in the right direction, for sure.
Edition of 40. I HAVE ONE LEFT...
Jazzfinger - ugly for a living (CDR) - Gold Soundz $10.00
"Brand new full-length CD-R from one of the best free/avant/drone/
primitive groups in the UK. This one is as fuzzy and electronically
lurid as you could’ve hoped, stepping up the action levels from the
dead-static drone of their recent self-released lathe-cut LP to new
levels of teeth-grinding fury. At points this sounds like it could’ve
come out on Scratch tapes back in the day, at others it sounds like
they’ve recruited Neil Campbell for a tribute to the Third Ear Band
recorded direct to ZX Spectrum. Nine tracks, with conceptions of the
quality of “Icy Bloody Lies, We Hardly Knew You” and “Ascent Through
Degradation”. This duo walk the line like no-one else and Ugly For A
Living makes for a beautiful ticket to oblivion." - Volcanic Tongue
John Wiese and Thurston Moore - new wave dust / jung (7inch) - PacRec
$5.00
split release from John Wiese and Thurston Moore.
Kapotte Muziek and Lethe - Tsurumai (CD) - Intransitive $12.00
"a fantastic collaborative live document by Kapotte Muziek and Lethe
from electro-acoustic improvisations made under a bridge in Nagoya"
PSI - artifically retarded soul care operators (CD) - Evolving Ear
$13.00
"Captured live and in the studio over the past two years,
Artificially Retarded Soul Care Operators is the definitive pee-ess-
eye blast of true and pure sacrificial brain-rot. A fifty-minute
collection of densely cultivated mitherings from the unforeseen
masters of complete silence. Featuring beautiful full color gatefold
cover art and poster by Fritz Welch and Stephen O’Malley."
Roel Meelkop - 5 (Ambiences) (CD) - Intransitive $12.00
"The music of “5 (Ambiences)” deals with ways of approaching and
conceptualizing ambient sound, of abstracting sounds from the world
until they become much more than documentary observations. The music
plays with some referential material (are they field recordings?
digitally generated? does it matter?), a very wide dynamic range (to
encourage active listening), evocative and even dramatic structures
but also forbiddingly impersonal distance. It toys with the notion of
“ambient music” (as new age wallpaper) by using ambiences to create
deeply involving compositions which change as one changes one’s
listening focus. This music is open to any interpretation, or no
interpretation at all. When Roel Meelkop creates a new CD, he
considers anything other than the music to be a distraction from the
point at which a listener apprehends a sonic experience and generates
his or her own meaning. Previous albums have not included any images,
text, biographic information, or even titles. Th
is sort of presentation could be misinterpreted as willful obscurity,
but quite the opposite is intended. By the composer’s reasoning, the
music on the CD is exactly and only what the listener hears; richness
then arises from the act of listening. On this new disc, the artist
deviates somewhat from his previous pattern. At Intransitive’s
urging, he wrote a bit of text to describe his thoughts about
composition and listening, if not this album in particular. This may
not seem like much, but for Meelkop it is a major concession. For the
first time, this artist who has hardly given any interviews, whose
philosophy, while quite straightforward, has been implied but never
directly described, has given listeners a way in to his sound world.
Which says nothing of what that world contains... This is Meelkop’s
2nd CD on Intransitive. He is also a member of Kapotte Muziek, Goem,
THU20, and the Audio.nl label. Previous albums have appeared on Mego,
trente oiseaux, Staalplaat, 12k, Rast!
er-Noton, and CMR."
Talibam! - s/t (CDR) - Evolving Ear $10.00
"Think Media Dream-vintage Sun Ra organ blow-outs locking in with
saxophone feedback and a single Plunderphonic-ed Keith Moon drum fill
for 40 minutes. Or, imagine Andy Kaufman sitting in on keyboards with
Borbetomagus at next year’s ABC No Rio benefit. Whoa. Each of the 200
copies of Talibam! is packaged in a cut up recycled LP cover with a
vinyl insert and a photo of a lone Silver Apples fan taken in Union
Square in 1969." "Agro-improv troupe Talibam! will surely harsh your
mellow. A cross between noise-rock, free-jazz and unabashad
fuckeduppedness, Talibam! is audio terrorism at its most
playful...drummer Kevin Shea and the hideous gurgles of what might be
Speak & Spells (Matt Mottel, synth) suffocating under distortion
pedals (Ed Bear, feedbacksaphone)." - Chris Weingarten, Village Voice
Various Artists - three.pieces (CDR) - Carbon Records $8.00
a collection of mostly out-of-print 3" releases from the festival,
all compiled on to one 5" CDR . features ~20min pieces from Andy
Gilmore, Chad Oliveiri and Joe+N. all three pieces were recorded at
visual studies workshop, rochester ny on 01.19.2002 at -- Andy
Gilmore - "an amazing live recording of Andy's brand of beautiful
solo guitar layering. for fans of Loren Mazzacane Connors, Noel
Akchote, Brian Eno (ie. Discrete Music) and the like."; Chad Oliveiri
- "feels right at home along side releases from labels such as Mego,
Meme, etc"; Joe+N - "constructed from the sounds of test-tone cds and
contact mics placed in various places on the cd player which played
them. in addition, a contact mic was inserted into my mouth while i
proceeded to narrate the accompanying video of my all-too-familiar
drive from my home town of Scranton, PA to my current residence in
Rochester, NY."
Various Artists - gold leaf branches (3CD) - Digitalis Industries $24.00
"'gold leaf branches' is a massive collection. it is an undertaking
that is years in the making, one that often looked as though it would
never be completed. complete artist list: Six Organs of Admittance,
