News:
====================
The 10YR.BOXSET is ALMOST GONE FOREVER!!! i have less than 10 copies
left. once that's gone, the releases will only be available
individually, with no wooden/metal-goodness.
Last month i had a sculpture/object art piece in a local gallery i
help run (www.avspace.org). it has since been deconstructed into a Joe
+N release. details below in the New Releases section.
The upcoming Carbon compilation has now grown to be a TRIPLE CD
release!!! i have (almost) all the tracks and i'm in the process of
tracking/mastering and package design. i hope to get this releases in
mid/late March. i'll have more info in the next newsletter. see the
list of participants down below.
The CarbonSoundSystem is going strong, with 10th installment posted
last night. I'm pretty much keeping up with the weekly schedule (new
posts available on fridays). background: each week, a new recording
will be posted (available as a podcast, or manual download) and will
feature selections from the most recent additions to the Carbon
mailorder catalog, in the style of a radio show. point your favorite
podcast client (like iTunes) to www.carbonrecords.com/podcast/ ,
or you can just go there with your browser and right-click---"save-as
linked file" on the "Read more.." links... more info on podcasts
down below.
the new Carbon tshirts are still available. they are a two color
design by our own Andy Gilmore. more information below. speaking of
Andy, he has been featured in the latest issue of Arkitip (http://
www.arkitip.com/). check it out.
and lastly, the Carbon site got hacked badly back during the
holidays, and as a result, the Photos and Videos page is barely up
and stumbling. i'm still working on reconstructing the collection of
files. stay tuned as sections come back online.
New Releases:

Arthur Doyle - No More Evil Women TOUR CD (CDR) - Carbon Records $10.00
20 minutes of Arthur Doyle's trademark vocalizations. recorded direct
to cassette, this is a great vocal only recording from Arthur, to
celebrate his recent mini-tour of the NorthEast US. [limited edition.
packaging started as 3 4'x4' paintings on 1/4" plywood. the pieces
were then cut into 6"x6" boards that serve as the cover/carrier for
the release.]
Joe+N - uprooted (3inch CDR) - Carbon Records $30.00
this is the deconstructed-product of a sculpture/object piece i
created for an art exhibit at A|V in Rochester (www.avspace.org).
each release is a 3" CDR enclosed in a hand-made box, measuring 6.5"
x 6.5" x 2", along with a lid. the inside bottom is lined with dried
reeds gathered at an abandoned rail-line. the material on the CD is
constructed and inspired by the sounds of the reeds, used/existing in
various ways. the art piece was also entitled "uprooted" and was
about various forms of uprooting items/resources/people/ etc, so it
made sense to _uproot_ the boxes from the main piece and spread them
around. this release is ULTRA-LIMITED. there are 10 boxes made of Oak
and 5 made of Paduak and Oak.
Monotract - live in Japan (CD) - Carbon Records $12.00
"this cd documents our japan tour of 2002, Its been a few years but

Jelle Crama [its amazing looking, as you could expect from Jelle]" --
co-released by Imvated Records,Carbon Records,Gold
Soundz,Humbg,Audiobot,Breaking World and Public Eyesore. due to some
overseas mail mishaps, i never got my copies, but Lieven at Imvated

more than i normally would, to try to recoup my costs.

Carbon Records - the Andy Gilmore design (TSHIRT) - Carbon Records
$10.00
an amazing collage of two drawings by Andy Gilmore (check out his
site) on the front, in two colors (red and brown), and the Carbon
"sketch" logo and slogan on the back (also in two colors), on a
"natural" color shirt.
Pengo - Alchemy and Bullshit (2CDR) - Carbon Records $12.00
a double CDR document of Pengo's migration from a 3-piece out-spazz-
noise group to 4-piece drone-psych-noise-rock group. recordings
ranging from the 2001 Phi-Tour series, 2002 live and "studio" pieces
(including a show with guests Dave Cross of Coffee, Ed Wilcox of
Temple Bon Matin and Charles Leport of Hinkley/Finkbeiner/etc), thru
pounding live 2003/2004 sets, much in the vein of current
configuration. 2 black-bottom cdrs, glossy print insert, sealed in a
6"x8" silkscreened and spray painted chipboard mailer.
Various Artists - three.pieces (CDR) - Carbon Records $8.00
a collection of mostly out-of-print 3" releases from the festival,
all compiled on to one 5" CDR . features ~20min pieces from Andy
Gilmore, Chad Oliveiri and Joe+N. all three pieces were recorded at
visual studies workshop, rochester ny on 01.19.2002 at <init.one>.
Autumn in Halifax - Kites With Broken Strings (CDR) - Carbon Records
$8.00
autumn in halifax is "the quiet avant folk drone guitar and voice of
david merulla." and this release showcases pretty much every aspect
of that description. in addition to his amazing guitar/looping and
vocal work, he is joined on a number of tracks by various friends
from his previous stomping grounds in the San Diego (post)pop/rock
scene. David does an amazing job of mixing delicate (and catchy)
melodies and looping, with abstract sounds and textures .

CarbonHQ - Carbon.10YR.BOOK (BOOKLET and CDR) - Carbon Records $18.00
"This book tries to capture some of the graphical elements and
direction from the first 10 years of Carbon Records. Started in 1994
with the release of a Joe+N (then called Joe +4=Poopie) cassette
release (different me's), Carbon has been consuming most of my free
time and energy, and (almost) every moment has been well worth it.
I've met a bunch of amazing people, artists, fans, fellow label-
honchos, etc. Here's to another arbitrary number of years..." this is
a 20-page full-color booklet with a full-length CDR by Joe+N, paying
homage to the passage of time, and the random crap that happens in
that time.
D Yellow Swans and Jim Alteri - Drowning Yellow Swans (CDR) - Carbon
Records $8.00
28+min of swelling and dro(w)ning guitar, glitched up blips and
beeps, and ghostly vocal fragments. another amazing installment from
D Yellow Swans, with help, this time, from Jim Alteri. connecting,
connecting, connecting, click.............
Joe+N - 35 trips around the sun (CDR) - Carbon Records $6.00
heavy-ass guitar piece, powering this hunk of rock around the sun,
far too many/few times. sludging, burning up amp noise, with a
glimmer of hope cutting thru the heavy dark matter.
coming up in late 2006: Hinkley, SQ, Anthony Milton / Joe+N split,
Edward Ruchalski, Pumice, Joe+N and more.

New Releases since 1/10/2006 (24 items)
======================================
Adam Pacione - sisyphus (CD) - Elevator Bath $12.00
Adam Pacione’s debut album (following some beautiful limited edition
CDRs) is Sisyphus, an organic and fluid collection of haunting
ambience, brimming with warmth and emotion. The recordings have a
contemplative, solitary air about them, and this is a stunningly
gorgeous set - leading the listener through these sound-works in
perfect succession, with each piece flowing effortlessly into the
next. Sisyphus has an aquatic or womblike feel, as if the composer
were calmly observing and documenting his surroundings while
completely submerged. And the weight of water has never been so
meticulously described as within these sounds. Much like the album’s
mythical namesake, Sisyphus is largely concerned with repetition:
Sounds and melodies are reiterated; Passages are looped with
deliberate pacing. And there is beauty and ultimately reward to be
found in these recurrences. The desired effect is flawlessly
delivered, and the bliss of Sisyphus entangles. Pacione takes cues
from 70s ambi
ent pioneers such as Brian Eno and artists on the Brain and Sky
labels, as well as from current masters William Basinksi and those
from the Touch label. Packaged inside two elegant printed sleeves of
100% recycled paper, this compact disc has been issued in an edition
of 329 copies.
[limited edition.
packaging started as 3 4'x4' paintings on 1/4" plywood. the pieces
were then cut into 6"x6" boards that serve as the cover/carrier for
the release.]
bexar bexar - 07.04.99 (LP) - Elevator Bath $6.00
07.04.99 is the debut release from Bexar Bexar, an individual (and
occasional collective) based in Texas. The record consists of a
single piece: A beautiful, fascinating field recording with minimal
musical accompaniment. Bexar Bexar has recorded a great deal of
material, some of which has recently surfaced on the debut CD,
Haralambos, available now from the very fine Western Vinyl label.
This one-sided 12" has been issued on black vinyl in a numbered
edition of 330 copies.
Clay's Festering Lungs - silverskull (CASS) - imvated $8.00
"Silver Skull by Clay’s Festering Lungs—the solo psych-noise project
from Davenport headman Clay Ruby—is the latest bounty from the
harvest. Silver Skull drowns folk influences under pulsing waves of
feedback and distortion squeals, though Ruby’s yearning vocals
sometimes peek out from under the mess, occasionally even reaching
the point of legibility. Not that one cares to understand them.
Silver Skull focuses so intently on texture and undulating, slow-burn
rhythm that semantic content would only distract the listener. The
tape traffics in emptiness and muted pain; it’s a perfect
accompaniment to a long, lonely convalescence. Abruptly cut into
several pieces—each distinct but similar in drony and disturbed—
Silver Skull refuses even the listener hoping to be lulled into
narcotic coma. Too threatening and ominous for quick gratification,
but too impatient for the drone set, Silver Skull plays by its own
rules in a increasingly flooded and diluted noise/drone/pysch market. So
count Clay’s Festering Lungs as another emerging name in the noise
world, though I can think of few artists established enough to be
unseated by up-and-comers." [Bryan Berge] - www.stylusmagazine.com
Clon - Sudden Ionospheric Disturbances (CDR) - gameboy $8.00
"CLON is a name you might not be familiar with, but you probably know
the man behind it. As one half of the Cornucopia, Jorge Castro has
put out dozens of high-quality releases and toured the US (most
recently Hive Mind and Luasa Raelon) and Europe several times. CLON
is Jorge's new solo venture. It isn't a drastic shift from
Cornucopia, but definitely has more grit. Sheer force and impeccable
composition: the finest aspects of classic Merzbow & Aube releases
reimagined for the harsh digital era. CDR edition of 100 in color
cover with hand-painted insert."
Colin Andrew Sheffield - spring (time) / the bridge (7inch) -
Elevator Bath $5.00
Colin's sophomore effort from 1999 continues in a vein similar to
that of his first record. The digital, mechanical sounds are still
present but are now intertwined with deep tones and hidden half-
melodies. On transparent vinyl with lovely inner and outer jackets,
in an edition of 300 copies.
Colin Andrew Sheffield - in between (10inch) - Elevator Bath $8.00
recordings by colin andrew sheffield in between is an atmospheric new
piece in two parts. It is possible that Colin's work is best listened
to peripherally, perhaps while writing or (as is the case with in
between) while reading.... front cover text by ilex fenusova The
evocative writings which grace the record's jacket come provided by
this acclaimed poet from Texas. On transparent vinyl with lovely text-
only jackets, in an edition of 295 copies.
Core of the Coalman - Spirograph / End Grain (CDR) - Zum $6.00
"New recordings from Core of the Coalman, the solo works of Oakland's
Jorge Boehringer (Treehugger, Brown Bunny Ensemble, Peloton, 7Central
and Mountain). Song structures and viola experiments mix with
electronic textures and warbly vocals, a deep dig into the carbon
fields and nature's edges."
Envenomist - Delving Glacial (CDR) - gameboy $8.00
"Appropriately titled disc of wintery synth rumblings from Columbus'
own David Reed, the beast who also mans the helm of the projects
Brittle Foundries and Luasa Raelon. Like Devillock's 'Cold Room,'
this opus is so frosty it should come packed in a foot of snow. Where
Devillock's brings to mind fantastic arctic imagery though,
Envenomist is more rooted in the real. This isn't a crashed plane in
the tundra where you play the action star survivalist. This is the
night you fell down drunk in the snow & woke up in a hospital half
alive. You play the idiot. Reminds me personally of walking out on a
froze-over Lake Erie & watching distant coal ships in the lifeless
water. CDR edition of 100 in color cover with hand-painted insert."
Fessenden - Capture / Create (CD) - Entr'acte $12.00
"This Chicago-based electro-acoustic improv trio consisting of Joshua
Convey (bass), Stephen Fiehn (CD players, guitar, iPod) and Steven
Hess (drums, vibraphone) has been working together since mid-2004.
Capture/Create's two tracks were recorded straight to MiniDisc using
a strategically placed stereo microphone. Five inch CD in a die-cut
wallet"
Goat - at the radar station (CDR) - imvated $8.00
"creeping shit. medieval harsh noise. sounds like a jazzcore band
playing at 2 and afterwards pixellated, going for a drink and in the
morning burn all the studiomasters. ace release co-released with
Audiobot (haha, it's sold out overthere allready!!). Zeloot made the
fine cover"
havergal - trash (10inch) - Elevator Bath $6.00
The five instrumental compositions, which comprise this EP from 1999,
are contemplative and melodic sound experiments. Traditional
instrumentation (guitar, percussion, etc.) mixes with found sounds
and samples to create wisely restrained, yet emotional music. The
material occasionally approaches "post rock," but ultimately opts for
something far more relevant. Havergal has released two full-length
CDs on Secretly Canadian. Additional recordings are also available
through the very fine Western Vinyl label. On transparent vinyl with
clear plastic sleeves, in an edition of 550 copies.
Howard Stelzer - This Map Is A Gift (CDR) - gameboy $8.00
"You think you know about Howard Stelzer? I don't think so. You can
look over the man's whole catalog - from 'Stone Blind' to his work
with Talbot to the recycled cassette and beyond - and you still
wouldn't have seen this one coming. Gone is the dramatic start/stop
timing. There aren't any sudden pauses or shifts here. No sir. This
is Stelzer's drone. It's still got the man's name stamped all over
it. His distinct sounds are still there, they are just layered so
thick, into such a haze, it's almost ridiculous. The web of walkmans
is brilliant and beautiful. Buyer Beware. Features the work of
Richard Francis, Stefan Neville and Clinton Watkins. Mastered by
Keith Fullerton Whitman. CDR edition of 100 in color cover with hand-
painted insert."
Jarvis - species and severity (3inch CDR) - imvated $6.00
"..one of the most outre, skull probing, bowel loosening releases of
the year..."
Joe Panzner - Polished Rocks (CDR) - gameboy $8.00
"When it comes to digital tone flickering, Joe Panzner's got the
goods & there is no shortage of people who know it.Take this email
from someone who got a sneak preview of the disc: "Reminds me of
Karkowski. Only better." I don't know if I'd go that far, but I'm
certainly not above reprinting it. When Panzner isn't teaching music
or writing ridiculously thorough record reviews, he's behind his
laptop cranking out jewels like these. This is the music that makes
you fall & crack your head on the concrete because you think the
floor is a flowerbed. CDR edition of 100 in color cover with hand-
painted insert."
Marc Behrens / Dave Phillips / Cheapmachines / Kei - Coincident (CD)
- Entr'acte $10.00
"Each of the four participants was invited by Phil Julian to make a
recording lasting exactly four minutes at 19:00 GMT on Saturday 15
October 2005. The results are presented here with a final layered mix
incorporating all submitted tracks. Five inch CD in a die-cut wallet"
Monotract - live in Japan (CD) - Carbon Records $12.00
"this cd documents our japan tour of 2002, Its been a few years but
we never did/nor will do sets like this ever again (involved tons of
electronic equipment + impossible to recreate songs) includes a
mangled version of Throbbing Gristle's United. Mutant artwork by
Jelle Crama [its amazing looking, as you could expect from Jelle]" --
co-released by Imvated Records,Carbon Records,Gold
Soundz,Humbg,Audiobot,Breaking World and Public Eyesore. due to some
overseas mail mishaps, i never got my copies, but Lieven at Imvated
was incredibly kind to donate 10 copies of his own stock to Carbon.
HUGE thanks to him. for this reason, i'm selling them for slightly
more than i normally would, to try to recoup my costs.
Partkdolg - spring recordings (CDR) - imvated $8.00
"new hyms by Bram Borloo, member of Belgian junkpsych bands like Dirk
Freenoise and R.O.T. some recent quiet recordings, ballads for broken
metal and shortcircuit radios"
R.O.T. - batman and snake (CDR) - imvated $8.00
"after numerous outputs on various labels (morc, foxglove, veglia,
slooow, ...), finally they found a place in their hearts for imvated
again. for the second time that is!! R.O.T. is realy the bunch of
people you can call friends. batman & snake is droning R.O.T. at his
"vaguest". no sense of drama whatsoever.... i think this is their
best album to date?"
Rick Reed - dark skies at noon (CD) - Elevator Bath $12.00
Rick Reed is a self-taught composer/improviser who has been working
in the Austin underground music scene for the past 25 years. Dark
Skies at Noon is his definitive statement. Over the years, Reed’s
sound has taken on a life of its own – that of a magnificent monster
capable of both ferocious intensity and lulling tranquility, yet
perfectly controlled under Reed's masterful care. Dark Skies at
Noon's title track was utilized by legendary filmmaker Ken Jacobs as
soundtrack to some of his recent works. And it is an apt
accompaniment to Jacobs' surreal, otherworldly images (the Jacobs/
Reed collaboration is ongoing). The second piece in this collection
is a live recording (made by Tom Carter of Charalambides) featuring
ex-AMM guitarist Keith Rowe in a stunning duet. The album's closing
piece is pure Rick Reed, demonstrating his wholly unique sound and
compositional style in an ear-bending, yet always restrained blur of
sine waves, field recordings, short-wave radio, and Moog syn
thesizer. Reed has defined his sound while performing solo and with
various groups including Frequency Curtain and the Abrasion Ensemble.
Since the mid 90s, Reed has released several LPs and CDs on labels
such as Ecstatic Peace, Beta-lactam Ring, Pale Disc Japan and
Elevator Bath. Packaged inside two elegant printed sleeves of 100%
recycled paper, this compact disc has been issued in an edition of
328 copies.
Sylvester Anfang - bootleg 8-10-2005 Fef, Antwerp (CASS) - imvated $8.00
"from the funerary across the sea comes the mighty silvester anfang.
these lynchpins of the burgeoning funeral folk empire from belgian
know how to romp and stomp their way into the hearts of all. like
finnish compatriots, avarus, this group is about having fun and
getting retarded. claustrophobic explorations in the world of
acoustic, airy drones cross the t's and dot the i's in a whirlwind of
beer-induced bliss. you can feel the stickiness on the floor. but
like all things underneath the overcast belgian skies, there's an
existential plane to be found. or maybe that's just intoxication."
The Flying Luttenbachers - Spectral Warrior Mythos (CDR) - ugExplode
$8.00
"30 minutes/7 tracks of brand new recordings featuring weasel walter
on drums and mick barr and ed rodriguez trading off on guitar and
bass. raging, stripped down live-in-studio recordings of old and new
material that must be heard to be believed! total cult!!!! this is a
limited edition, numbered release hand packaged with four deluxe full
color inserts printed on 80 lb. gloss cardstock. get this while it
lasts and consider this a warning for the impending CATACLYSM!!!
Includes insane remakes of material from "Infection and Decline",
"The Void", "Systems Emerge from Complete Disorder" and much more . . ."
Various Artists - Not Without a Fight (2CD) - Crucial Blast $12.00
"Originally released in 1999, the NOT WITHOUT A FIGHT double-CD
compilation was one of our first releases, a crude feast of brutal
grindcrust, raw hardcore, and all-out noise warfare packed inside of
a 64 page 7"x7" newsprint fanzine-style booklet loaded with rants,
essays, poetry, artwork, and band info. It's been out of print for
about two years now, but we've re-released it in this second edition
of 1,000 copies, never to be repressed. The re-issue won't be
available in select stores until January, but you can order it now
through Crucial Blast. This limited-edition re-issue of the 1999
double CD compilation NOT WITHOUT A FIGHT is Crucial Blast's homage
to the scuzz-caked grindcore/noise/sludge/speedpunk underground of
the mid/late 1990's embodied in cheap cassette compilations and xerox-
sleeved split 7" EPs. One of Crucial Blast's first ever releases, we
grabbed exclusive outbursts from an array of subterranean sonic
abusers, including BASTARD NOISE, AGATHOCLES, DAHMER, C
RIPPLE BASTARDS, MACRONYMPHA, UNHOLY GRAVE, and loads of other
purveyors of damaged, anti-social grind and noisecore, free noise and
power electronics, spoken word, brutal fastcore, blazing D-beat
driven crustcore, and lysergic psych-sludge. NOT WITHOUT A FIGHT is
packaged in a DVD style plastic double-disc case that holds both CDs
and a mega-thick, 64 page fanzine-style newsprint booklet loaded with
band info, art, stories and rants. ARTIST LISTING: Mark Bruback,
Cruel Face, Strong Intention, Bastard Noise, RPOD, SoIHadToShootHim,
Katastrofialue, Unfound, Dark Skies Fallen, Retribution, Global
Holocaust, Flammable Child, Depressor, John Bender, Aural Torture
