Artist: Various Artists
Title: i don't think the dirt belongs to the grass
Format: 3CD
Label: Carbon Records
Price: $20.00
Catalog ID: CR99
a year+ in the making, and originally slated for a 10YR celebration,
this compilation is documentation of amazing people/artists i've
worked with over the past, now, 12 years. it also started out as a
double CD project, but with the growing list of people i wanted to
involve, and the overwhelming volume of confirmations, i had to grow
it to a triple CD (and even had to do some trimming to fit that
format). the release is packaged in a standard-size DVD case, with a
full-color cover, and holds the 3 CDs as well as a full-color card-
stock insert. the dvd case is then housed in a natural-color cotton
bag with single-color ink stamp art/logo. the sounds range from quiet
ambient sounds, to meandering guitar work, to outsider rock, to full
on noise, as well as a folk/pop track here and there. [limited
edition of 500]

Hinkley - estate sale (CD) - Carbon Records $10.00
"In Spring of 2005 Hinkley started working on their latest CD, Estate
Sale, with the help of Adam Lasus (Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah, Clem
Snide, Yo La Tengo). Recorded in both Brooklyn and Rochester, the
mixing and production duties of the record were split between Adam
and Hinkley (Adam mixing half the record remote in Los Angeles and
Hinkley mixing the other half in Rochester). Each mix was carefully
constructed and well though out, in some cases changes to the
arrangement or instrumentation occurred after all the tracks were
recorded and mixing was well underway. This approach gives the record
a unique feel. Musically Estate Sale encompasses a wide variety of
ideas weaving between country, 60's pop and indie-rock, while still
grounded in the distinct sound that has given Hinkley its name."
simply put, this is one of the best pop/rock records i've heard in
quite some time, and hence, i was compelled to release this CD (joe).
OvO / Cock E.S.P. - split single (7inch) - Carbon Records $5.00
"Italy's Ovo create fierce and pounding postpunk featuring heavy
injections of noise, free jazz and seminal no-wave. The duo features
talented multi-instrumentalist and Bar La Muerte Records chief Bruno
Dorella (Ronin, Wolfango, Bugo) and Stefania Pedretti (Allun, ?aloS),
whose stunning vocal range begins with cutsey child-like whispers,
peaks with banshee wails, and finishes with brutal death metal roars.
This release sees them in full rock mode, causing one sneak-preview
listener to compare the first of their two tracks -- "Pastorale" --
to Godflesh. Daniele Brusaschetto, Jacopo Andreini and Capoccia make
special guest appearances. America's Cock E.S.P. are generally known
for producing harsh noise only surpassed in intensity by the contempt
they generate within certain corners of the underground music scene.
This release is more of a diverse collection than their usual
outings, featuring mostly duo recordings of bandleader Emil Hagstrom
and vocalist Elyse Perez. In additio
n to the usual electronic noise and ranting vocals, certain tracks
also feature delicate experimental soundscapes and even some beats.
One of E.S.P.'s ten short tracks, "Yoko OvO", includes Elyse's vocal
ode to Stefania. Alexandra Kohl makes a guest appearance. The
packaging features several impressive photos from a notorious
November 2004 show in Oakland -- the last of 15 shows the two bands
played together on their respective 2004 US Tours -- on a bill which
included No Doctors, Unconditional Loathing, and Stooges sax player
Steve Mackey. An edition of only 500 copies" - co-released with 8mm,
Apop, Bar La Muerta, Bastardized and Little Mafia.
Pending releases:
coming up in June will be a Derek Bailey tribute 7" lathe-cut. each
side, a father-daughter duo, including myself (Joe+N) and my daughter
Ella, and other side by Chris Reeg (from Blood and Bone Orchestra,
Entente Cordiale, Crush the Junta, etc) and his daughter Ada. it
will be a limited edition of 50 copies. and coming up in mid/late
2006: SQ, Anthony Milton / Joe+N split, Edward Ruchalski, Pumice, Joe
+N and more.
Most recent Carbon releases:
Kelli Shay Hicks - Bucked (CD) - Carbon Records $5.00
a great little EP from Kelli Shay Hicks, clocking in at just under
10min. 3 field recordings of Kelli Shay's amazingly delicate, but
sharp, songs-- recorded by Jem Cohen in abandonded urban spaces off
the hi-ways of upstate New York. "Kelli Hicks is well versed in the
timeless. While her minimalist finger picking style, gentle voice,
and wry lyrics recall the 'New Americana' movement, she’s not
pretending. When you see her play, it becomes clear: This is Kelli
Hicks’ music. Nothing else..." -- Chad Oliveiri, City Newspaper.
"Kelli Hicks has a voice to break your heart. Her music is haunting
and playful… I’m left quietly devastated." -Davey Rothbart, FOUND
Magazine. [packaged in a chip-board folder with 2-color silk-screen
artwork. co-release with Atone Records] - check out more info on
Kelli - www.kellishayhicks.com
Chad Oliveiri - Pathetique (CDR) - Carbon Records $8.00
40min+ of top-notch electronic performance/composition from this
musician/writer from Rochester NY. this release includes pieces based
on live collaborations with various individuals throughout as well as
solo pieces, recorded between 2001 and 2005 . the tracks range from
static-driven compositions to organic pastoral drones, including
guitar, piano, voice, electronics, etc. Chad also has a collaborative
release with Brannon Hungness (also featured on this release) coming
out on Entr'acte (UK) this spring (2006). [heavy duty vinyl cover,
with full color insert and "prism" overlay. factory-colored CDR]
Arthur Doyle - No More Evil Women TOUR CD (CDR) - Carbon Records $10.00

to cassette, this is a great vocal only recording from Arthur, to
celebrate his recent mini-tour of the NorthEast US. [limited edition.

were then cut into 6"x6" boards that serve as the cover/carrier for

New Releases since 5/8/2006 (25 items)
======================================
AGF.3 and Sue.C - Mini Movies (2CD) - Asphodel $17.00
Two-disc release, one CD/one DVD. "The Compact Disc: Loping, wine-
soaked electrical RnB, AGF's third album (her first for Asphodel)
finds her dropping neu beat poetry over cookie crumb beats and
snaking across sly bass and piano. Tales of friendship, longing, and
wandering through anonymous city streets permeate the airwaves.
Nineteen tracks of lopsided pop and soundtrack interludes, sparse and
torch lit, Mini Movies is the complete sound of disastrous freedom.
The DVD: the Mini Movie: Sue C. (Gold Chains collaborator and solo
video artist in her own right) and AGF worked together to put
together this patchwork mystery of everyday life in the shadows of
capitalism, socialism, communalism and community. It is about
personal history and personal relationships. Filmed in New York, Long
Island, Berlin, London, San Francisco and elsewhere, Mini Movie is a
travel diary at once familiar and strange but overall it is a tribute
to friendship. The soundtrack is one continuous piece fro
m which most of the tracks on the CD were derived."
Arnold Deyblatt and the Orchestra of Excited Strin - Live at Federal
Hall National Memorial, 1981 (CD) - table of the elements $16.00
"Arnold Dreyblatt is one of the most engaging of the second
generation of New York minimalists. During a three decade career he
has developed a distinctive -- and delightfully accessible --
approach to composition and performance. Employing modified and
invented instruments and a unique tuning system, his music is a
vigorously rhythmic and richly textured romp through the natural
overtone series. This live CD celebrates the 25th anniversary of
Dreyblatt's historic concert at Federal Hall in New York (where
George Washington was inaugurated as President). Utilizing the
natural resonances of the structure's spectacular dome, Dreyblatt and
his Orchestra of Excited Strings present seven outstanding pieces
from the Nodal Excitation series for just-intoned double basses,
piano, hurdy gurdy and pipe organ, emphasizing dynamics and
sonorities to stunning acoustical effect."
Ashtray Navigations - dirt mummies and bloody amps (LP) - Freenoise
$25.00
"There's a big new hole in your record collection! File under:
psychedelic drowning guitar sitar crown chakra implosion, kundalini
violation, chest crushing metal mantra, synapse snapping,
annihalation in godhead of future trips blossoming new gene... Phil
Todd, Phil Legard and Melanie Delaney crashed in the ashtray of your
mind during Dec '05 and March '06 and found the way out through this
stunning new realisation. Contend with the deeper conscience of the
legendary 'Navigators' as they carve a clear path through existence,
ultimately to share and unite us in the cool golden draught of
shimmering free noise bliss... LTD. to 200 ONLY. INDIVIDUALLY
NUMBERED. Handmade covers by Navigator Todd himself."
Brendan Murray - Ocean of Dirt, Mountain of Steam (CDR) - gameboy $8.00
"Brendan Murray's drones have been oozing and crackling out of my
speakers for years. The first show I played with him in 2003 still
stands as one of the most beautiful sets I've seen. So obviously I'm
glad to finally have him do a GMBY disc. "Ocean of Dirt..." is a
single 40 minute track that sounds exactly like it's title would
suggest. Weaving from pockets of hiss through dense bass landscapes;
it implodes, reverses and completely rethinks itself. A meditation on
the alternative evolution of our world and ourselves, a heavy and
amazing work. CDR edition of 100 with cover art is by Jason Zeh.
Beautiful photocopy manipulations."
Enos Slaughter - Saloth Sar (CD) - Sound @ One $13.00
"Yes yes, here's new molten sounds from three cats taking cues from a
bat wielding spirit. Saloth Sar contains two massive tracks from Enos
Slaughter, all electric and poking a thumb in third eyes everywhere.
Electric guitar, bozuk, trashcan moog sound, and mystery sources
combine to create a throbbing piece of alienation that retains a
weird undercurrent of lyricism. Space lute meets the human string
incinerator. Housed in a beautiful package, this release includes
graphics culled from Cambodia's S21 prison archives. The imagery
hopes to argue a sensible point: the abolition of the military of US.
Featuring members of Sunburned, IZITITIZ, and NNCK."
FM3 - Buddha Machine (OTHER) - Staalplaat $24.00
2nd edition now available! A unique 'soundbox' from China,
distributed via Staalplaat. A totally dazzling item which causes jaw-
dropping delight everywhere -- Alan Bishop bought twenty-four of
these on sight, Brian Eno bought eight (how's that for apocalyptical
math?). Kind of like a little AM radio, but without all the nonsense
-- total genius from out of nowhere. More info/pictures at:
www.fm3.com.cn. Comes with 2 x AA (Chinese) batteries. "Fm3 is
opening a new special series of Staalplaat. The Buddha Machine is a
small soundbox made in China which comes with an integrated speaker,
a volume control, mini jack-out and a switch to choose between nine
different loops which are stored on a small chip and can be directly
played by this mini soundsystem. A number of other artists will
continue this series soon."
Foot and Mouth Disease - Shiva Knows (CDR) - Cornsilk $8.00
another self-release by the ever prolific, Rochester legend, Larry J
Patti. minimal synth and noise guitar pieces, dark transmissions from
somewhere.
Foot and Mouth Disease - Restop (CDR) - Cornsilk $8.00
another self-release by the ever prolific, Rochester legend, Larry J
Patti. (sometimes-broken-up) synth noise, sampling and drones.
Jason Zeh - Sarira (CDR) - gameboy $8.00
"Zen Master Zeh is Ohio's premier cassette mangler, often seen
wrestling with 8+ tape decks at once. Don't make the mistake of
thinking that because you know his instrument you know his sound
though. His style is equally influenced by crude Midwestern brethren
and the high-art splicers of yore making for a truly unique vision.
"Sarira" is a term with special meaning from a now all-but-dead
language. "Full of holes" seems to be one of the modern literal
translations and that in and of itself is appropriate enough. Zeh's
piece starts off with nice harsh blasts (flames?) then mellows out
before moving into truly transcendental turf. CDR edition of 100 with
cover art is by Jason Zeh. Beautiful photocopy manipulations."
Jazkamer - Proud To Be Un American (CDR) - gameboy $8.00
"Fifth time I've worked with Lasse Marhaug on a release and third
time with John Hegre, but the first time with their long-standing and
ever-changing/challenging Jaz(z)kam(m)er duo. This disc documents the
highlights of their 2004 US tour with Howard Stelzer - both on and
off the stage. Performances are summarized with abrasive guitar noise
and augmented with audience banter and merch booth ponderings as the
mics continue to run. The fool who utters "I think they could hear
that in Oslo" sums it up best. CDR edition of 100 with cover art is
by Jason Zeh. Beautiful photocopy manipulations."
Kites - Peace Trials (CD) - Load Records $13.00
"Rewired neural strum and groam from the one man operation known as
Kites. One minute EZ sounds pump from your jambox, the next a
squaretone boxes you upside the head. Very much in the tradition of
new school noize croppers such as Wolf Eyes and Die Yellow Swans, but
turbolaced with a mutant virus of melody and folkery. Yes, acoustica
based acid melt. Features a (beautiful)collaboration with Erin
Rosenthal from Udog. Kites has played with the cream of today's new
sounds krewz including Wolf Eyes, Double Leopards, Hair Police and
many others and is considered a master on his own homemade equipment."
KK Null, Chris Watson and Z'EV - number one (CD) - Touch $14.00
" American performance/noise/percussion artist Z'ev, Japanese
composer/performer K.K. Null, and field-recording artist Chris Watson
(formerly of Cabaret Voltaire and the Hafler Trio) conjoin in a first
collaboration for Touch. The idea for this recording, generated by
Z'ev, has three elements: 1) to use the structure of the Noh Theatre
cycle as the basis for the composition; 2) to consider the initial
sound development in terms of developing "characters" which would
then interact with one another through the specific "scene;" and 3)
to place the "character interactions" as the "figure" inside of
particular soundscapes as the "ground." In the production process,
Z'ev framed his and K.K. Null's electro-acoustic musics inside Chris
Watson's field recordings from East Africa. A dynamic dialogue and
inside-outside mirroring of natural and synthetic sound is the
result: where the click and rhythm of an insect merges with K.K.
Null's drumming; where the calls of the elephants combin
e with the electronic bass frequencies; where bird and frog song and
Z'ev's harmonic structures produce surprising counterpoints. This is
carefully-constructed, pure avant-garde."
Mike Shiftlet - Hearing (or Not) (CDR) - gameboy $8.00
"Latest Shiflet solo outing ventures further down the path that blurs
noise and drone. "Hearing" is by far the noisiest recording I've done
in a while, but beneath the scathing surface, it has much more in
common with its predecessors than the initial once-over might imply.
With just a noise generator and digital feedback, "Hearing" presents
itself in 18 takes, each playing with the idea of expectations and
listening. Do audiences/listeners hear what they want to hear or what
the artist wants them to? What is actually there, what isn't? If in
the end, it's all the same thing? Or Not? CDR edition of 100 with
cover art is by Jason Zeh. Beautiful photocopy manipulations."
nmperign and Jason Lescalleet - Love Me Two Times (2CD) -
Intransitive $18.00
"Intransitive Recordings is very proud to present Love Me Two Times,
the highly anticipated double-CD epic by Jason Lescalleet (tapeloops)
and nmperign (Bhob Rainey - soprano sax, and Greg Kelley - trumpet).
The result of six years of live and studio collaboration, LM2X is by
far the most ambitious and uncompromising statement yet by this
formidable trio. The album begins as a more-or-less straight
documentary-style recording of group improvisation, but don’t get too
comfortable… over the course of the next two hours, the ground
steadily shifts, the bottom drops out, and any expectations a
listener may have had going in are thoroughly trampled. Join the
group as they visit art galleries, rock clubs, living rooms, at least
one church, and the kitchen of a famous chef, before finally putting
a fist through an amplifier. Fans will find the usual ingredients
here: crusty old reel-to-reel tape decks, cheap keyboards, amplified
and acoustic horns…but rude tape splices, violent humo
r, and confusingly degraded fidelity push the music far from safe
territory. The visceral drama of LM2X does not neatly spell out its
intentions, nor does it signal exactly what it has up its sleeve. It
exists in its own universe, demands repeat listens and to be taken on
its own terms."
Orthrelm / Behold...The Arctopus - split (CD) - Crucial Blast $7.00
"This CDEP features a new, exclusive song each from New York tech/
prog metal wizards BEHOLD...THE ARCTOPUS and shred meltdown duo
ORTHRELM, overdosing the listener on spastic complexity and insane
instrumental prowess that will liquify your grey matter. Adorned in
eye-blazing original artwork from VOIVOD's Away."
Oscillating Innards - Irretrievable (7inch) - PacRec $5.00
"Debut 7" from west coast harsh noise/ambient madman Oscillating
Innards. Abrasive walls of junk & crunch, tranquil & melodic drone,
and obsessive structured compositions recorded in autumn of 2005.
Silk-screened covers, edition of 300. Co-released with Iatrogenesis
and Black Horizons."
Ovo - Miastenia (LP) - Load Records $10.00
LP version. "Milan, Italy's Ovo are a two piece using guitar/violin/
cellos and drums that dump a toxic sludge with an unmistakable
butterscotch scent. This sludge is in line with contemporaneous doom
salesmen such as Boris and the Melvins, with the addition of vox
stylings that take this record to a new place entirely."
OvO / Cock E.S.P. - split single (7inch) - Carbon Records $5.00
"Italy's Ovo create fierce and pounding postpunk featuring heavy
injections of noise, free jazz and seminal no-wave. The duo features
talented multi-instrumentalist and Bar La Muerte Records chief Bruno

Apop, Bar La Muerta, Bastardized and Little Mafia.
Paul Flaherty and Chris Corsano - The Beloved Music (CD) - Family
Vineyard $13.00
"The most thoroughly realized blueprint for a post-hardcore take on
improvised jazz to date from the duo of legendarily long-serving New
England saxophonist Paul Flaherty and young firebrand drummer Chris
Corsano. Forsaking the call and response modes of countless
improvising ensembles, the duo deal more in a simultaneity of sound,
an elemental non-stop gush of ideas, rhythms and epiglottal forms
that at points feels like a small-group response to the orchestral
conceptions of the Peter Brotzmann and John Coltrane big-bands as
much as epochal duo deals like the Rashied Ali/Frank Lowe and
Muhammad Ali/Frank Wright sides."
The White Birch - Come Up For Air (LP) - Rune Grammofon $16.00
"This is the fourth full-length release from this Norwegian trio led
by singer, guitarist and main songwriter Ola Fløttum. Come Up For Air
shows a band growing with confidence and maturing as writers since
their debut album Self-Portrayal ten years ago. First appearing as
angry young men with lo-fi Sonic Youth-like riffing, then exploring
industrial prog and more structured songwriting, they found their
current sound with their previous record, Star Is Just A Sun (2002).
Come Up For Air is once again produced by Helge Sten, the sonic
magician of Deathprod and Supersilent fame. This time the songs are
more focused, the melodies clearer and the atmosphere brighter. But
this is still a highly melancholic set of dreamy rock that some will
say has a "Nordic" feel to it, whatever that really means. Others
have compared The White Birch to Sigur Rós, Talk Talk and A-Ha
without any of those references hitting the spot. We say this is a
collection of original and personal songs, some o
f which will grab you straight away, like the captivating "Seer
Believer" and "June" (with Susanna Wallumrød from Susanna and the
Magical Orchestra guesting on vocals) and others are certain to sneak
under your skin after a few more rounds. Originally released in
Europe in November 2005 by German label Glitterhouse, this Rune
Grammofon CD issue has exclusive artwork by Kim Hiorthøy."
Various Artists - Naugacide (DVDR) - Naugacide $10.00
comes with a DVDR of the documentary, and a CDR featuring full audio
tracks from artists featured in the movie soundtrack. "Naugacide,
Bryan Dematteis' documentary about the Tempora, Illinois, sect of Kuu
worshippers known locally as the band Skarekrau Radio, shall do for
Kuu what H.P. Lovecraft's work did for the Cthulhu. Not so much an
exposé of the band as it is a long, unblinking stare into the watery
eye of absolute obsession, Naugacide begins as a straightforward
examination of just what it is Skarekrau Radio is doing when the
members perform a show (known in cult-speak as a "Warning Orb").
Initially approaching the subjects of Skarekrau and their "god" Kuu
with an admirable objectivity, Dematteis quickly loses a handle on
his rational approach. But faced with the assault of his onscreen
talent by the band, the shifting loyalties of his cameraman and the
obviously forced confessions of Tempora's police chief (a man who
knows too much to be as innocent as he maintains),
Dematteis is clearly out of his league -- the power of Kuu absorbs
all who stand before It.
And then the true depravity and evil of Dematteis' "documentary"
becomes apparent. He's not filming real events as they happen; he's
creating a Kuu ritual on film, an artfully constructed piece of
propaganda designed to sway young minds and souls over to Kuu.
Naugacide is as pernicious an attack on Judeo-Christian Americans as
one can imagine. It is a nightmare vision, a lurid enticement of the
primal forces at work in young men's loins. How could a young person
view the rampant male nudity, the dismemberment, the weeping
phalluses, the constant debasement of human flesh juxtaposed with the
total fulfillment of carnal and spiritual desires and not immediately
afterwards declare themselves a throbbing member of Kuu's ranks?
There won't be a dry crotch in the house by the end of Naugacide, nor
will there be anyone but converts stroking those crotches. All hail
Kuu, who replaces shame with pain and pain with stains." -- Paul
Friswold (RiverFrontTimes) [includes a Pengo track]
Various Artists - Until Human Voices Wake Us and We Drown (10inch) -
Rune Grammofon $77.00
THIS IS a 5x10" BOXSET!!!! --- "The label Rune Grammofon celebrates
50 releases with this collection of 19 tracks from their catalog,
showing the variation of music they have put out since their first
release in January 1998. This committed, consistent label seeks to
document the development of the most creative and adventurous young
Norwegian talent within the areas of electronica, improvisation,
ambient, free music and most things in-between and beyond, promoting
a scene that is finally getting the international recognition it
deserves. This compilation spans the timeless melancholia of Fartein
Valen, the pioneering electronic music of Arne Nordheim, the magical
pop diamonds of Susanna and the Magical Orchestra to the restless
youth improv that is MoHa!, taking in some traditional music, free
rock, jazz, ambient, contemporary experiments and various shades of
electronica along the way. Some are cornerstones in the catalog, but
this is not a "best-of" collection -- this comp
ilation seeks to show the different aspects of Rune Grammofon while
still displaying each record's common theme or base. There are five
10" vinyl records, all in their own sleeve with an exclusive Kim
Hiorthøy design, as well as a 16-page catalog, also specially
designed by Kim that includes a descriptive overview of the first 50
Rune Grammofon releases. All come in a nice cardboard box, also
designed by Kim. Being limited to 1000 copies, this is bound to be a
collector's item in no time, not only because of the limited aspect
but also because of the fantastic design work at show, quite possibly
the best record design work Kim has ever done."
William Hooker and Lee Renaldo - The Celestial Anser (CD) - table of
the elements $16.00
"As individual performers, William Hooker and Lee Ranaldo are
explosive. As collaborators, they are thermonuclear. A kinetic, avant
percussionist and poet, Hooker is one of New York's most important
band leaders, having fronted groups that included David Murray and
David S. Ware. Ranaldo leads the improv supergroup Text of Light,
whose fluid membership includes Hooker, as well as Christian Marclay,
Tim Barnes and Mission of Burma's Roger Miller -- and of course, he's
a co-founder of the indefatigably experimental Sonic Youth. With The
Celestial Answer, Hooker and Ranaldo have created a work of
blindingly brilliant, elemental force. Rays of white guitar noise
penetrate clouds of analog synth; molten drumming blasts across free-
form poetics. The dynamic is beautiful and inspired -- a simple cold-
fusion of intuitive interaction and boundless sonic freedom. These
are thoughtful and emotionally attuned artists. Open your ears and
they'll take you on a soaring voyage through an ecs
tatic firmament, into the howling mouth of infinity."
