New Releases:
====================
Artist: Courtis / Kiritchenko / Moglass
Title: s/t
Format: CD
Label: Carbon Records
Price: $10.00
Catalog ID: CR122
Collaboration album by Anla Courtis, Andrey Kiritchenko and the
Moglass. Co-released by Carbon Records, Nexsound, Gold Soundz,
Tibprod and 1000+1 TiLt. tracklist: (1-3) by andrey kiritchenko
(sound sources by anla courtis, bandura, objects and field recordings
by andrey kiritchenko), (4-6) by the moglass (sound sources by anla
courtis, guitar and synth by the moglass), (7-11) by anla courtis
(sound sources by the moglass). Alan Courtis (a.k.a. Anla Courtis,
Alna Courtis, Courtis, etc.) was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on
february 22nd, 1972. He studied classical guitar, piano, theory and
composition. He holds a degree in Communication Science from the
University of Buenos Aires, where he currently runs an annual music
workshop. He played electric guitar in diverse bands and in 1993 he
co-founded the group Reynols. With this group he has released more
than one hundred CDs and vinyls worldwide in labels like Trente
Oiseaux, Digital Narcis, Drone Records, Locust, Sedimental,
Beta-Lactam Ring Records, Celebrated Psi Phenomenon, RRR, Audiobot
Records, Roaratorio, JDK, Reverse, Matching Head, American Tapes, The
Last Visible Dog, Carbon Records, etc. Andrey Kiritchenko is a person
known as an author of projects like Critikal, Sidhartha, NEX(Nihil
Est eXcellence), founder and co-runner of Nexsound records, musician
who has largely contributed into the development of electronic music
scene in Ukraine and already considered as one of the premiere
experimental artist from Eastern Europe. Being involved mostly in
experimental electronic and electroacoustic music for the last few
years, Andrey is now gaining recognition among the musicians and
followers of this style all over the world. His activities range from
glitch with blurred beats to electroacoustis experiments, from improv
to musique concrete, from drones to microsound. The group under the
Moglass came into being in 1997, preceded by five years of home
projects that were never released in public.!
The Moglass widely used the latest technical achievements of the
time such as sampling and postproduction of all kinds, hereat gaining
a reputation as post-rock musicians and performing at fashionable
discos on repeated occasions. Spellbound with the aesthetics of
freeform music, the musicians of the group gradually turned away from
glossy sound of their early records and began to decline invitations
to fancy discos thus gaining freedom of creating music at home and
communicating with a bunch of soul mates scattered all over the
world. Up-to-date records of the Moglass are spontaneous
improvisations, mostly live records, that by no means always can be
called free-noise because sometimes they are very gentle and melodic.

Artist: Various Artists
Title: i don't think the dirt belongs to the grass
Format: 3CD
Label: Carbon Records
Price: $20.00
Catalog ID: CR99
a year+ in the making, and originally slated for a 10YR celebration,
this compilation is documentation of amazing people/artists i've
worked with over the past, now, 12 years. it also started out as a
double CD project, but with the growing list of people i wanted to
involve, and the overwhelming volume of confirmations, i had to grow
it to a triple CD (and even had to do some trimming to fit that
format). the release is packaged in a standard-size DVD case, with a
full-color cover, and holds the 3 CDs as well as a full-color card-
stock insert. the dvd case is then housed in a natural-color cotton
bag with single-color ink stamp art/logo. the sounds range from quiet
ambient sounds, to meandering guitar work, to outsider rock, to full
on noise, as well as a folk/pop track here and there. [limited
edition of 500] full list of artists: http://www.carbonrecords.com/
mailorder/search.php?search_field=release_id&search_value=1260
Artist: Hinkley
Title: estate sale
Format: CD
Label: Carbon Records
Price: $10.00
Catalog ID: CR125
"In Spring of 2005 Hinkley started working on their latest CD, Estate
Sale, with the help of Adam Lasus (Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah, Clem
Snide, Yo La Tengo). Recorded in both Brooklyn and Rochester, the
mixing and production duties of the record were split between Adam
and Hinkley (Adam mixing half the record remote in Los Angeles and
Hinkley mixing the other half in Rochester). Each mix was carefully
constructed and well though out, in some cases changes to the
arrangement or instrumentation occurred after all the tracks were
recorded and mixing was well underway. This approach gives the record
a unique feel. Musically Estate Sale encompasses a wide variety of
ideas weaving between country, 60's pop and indie-rock, while still
grounded in the distinct sound that has given Hinkley its name."
simply put, this is one of the best pop/rock records i've heard in
quite some time, and hence, i was compelled to release this CD (joe).
Artist: OvO / Cock E.S.P.
Title: split single
Format: 7inch
Label: Carbon Records
Price: $5.00
Catalog ID: CR126
"Italy's Ovo create fierce and pounding postpunk featuring heavy
injections of noise, free jazz and seminal no-wave. The duo features
talented multi-instrumentalist and Bar La Muerte Records chief Bruno
Dorella (Ronin, Wolfango, Bugo) and Stefania Pedretti (Allun, ?aloS),
whose stunning vocal range begins with cutsey child-like whispers,
peaks with banshee wails, and finishes with brutal death metal roars.
This release sees them in full rock mode, causing one sneak-preview
listener to compare the first of their two tracks -- "Pastorale" --
to Godflesh. Daniele Brusaschetto, Jacopo Andreini and Capoccia make
special guest appearances. America's Cock E.S.P. are generally known
for producing harsh noise only surpassed in intensity by the contempt
they generate within certain corners of the underground music scene.
This release is more of a diverse collection than their usual
outings, featuring mostly duo recordings of bandleader Emil Hagstrom
and vocalist Elyse Perez. In additio
n to the usual electronic noise and ranting vocals, certain tracks
also feature delicate experimental soundscapes and even some beats.
One of E.S.P.'s ten short tracks, "Yoko OvO", includes Elyse's vocal
ode to Stefania. Alexandra Kohl makes a guest appearance. The
packaging features several impressive photos from a notorious
November 2004 show in Oakland -- the last of 15 shows the two bands
played together on their respective 2004 US Tours -- on a bill which
included No Doctors, Unconditional Loathing, and Stooges sax player
Steve Mackey. An edition of only 500 copies" - co-released with 8mm,
Apop, Bar La Muerta, Bastardized and Little Mafia.
Pending releases:
coming up later in August will be a release by Staplerfahrer (aka
Stefan de Turck) from the Netherlands. and in August/Sept/Oct/Nov
(depending on the lathe cutting progress in NZ) will be a Derek
Bailey tribute 7" lathe-cut. each side, a father-daughter duo,
including myself (Joe+N) and my daughter Ella, and other side by
Chris Reeg (from Blood and Bone Orchestra, Entente Cordiale, Crush
the Junta, etc) and his daughter Ada. it will be a limited edition
of 50 copies. and coming up in mid/late 2006: Chris Reeg, Talibam!,
SQ, Anthony Milton / Joe+N collaboration, Edward Ruchalski, Joe+N and
more.
Most recent Carbon releases:
Kelli Shay Hicks - Bucked (CD) - Carbon Records $5.00
a great little EP from Kelli Shay Hicks, clocking in at just under
10min. 3 field recordings of Kelli Shay's amazingly delicate, but
sharp, songs-- recorded by Jem Cohen in abandonded urban spaces off
the hi-ways of upstate New York. "Kelli Hicks is well versed in the
timeless. While her minimalist finger picking style, gentle voice,
and wry lyrics recall the 'New Americana' movement, she’s not
pretending. When you see her play, it becomes clear: This is Kelli
Hicks’ music. Nothing else..." -- Chad Oliveiri, City Newspaper.
"Kelli Hicks has a voice to break your heart. Her music is haunting
and playful… I’m left quietly devastated." -Davey Rothbart, FOUND
Magazine. [packaged in a chip-board folder with 2-color silk-screen
artwork. co-release with Atone Records] - check out more info on
Kelli - www.kellishayhicks.com

musician/writer from Rochester NY. this release includes pieces based
on live collaborations with various individuals throughout as well as
solo pieces, recorded between 2001 and 2005 . the tracks range from
static-driven compositions to organic pastoral drones, including
guitar, piano, voice, electronics, etc. Chad also has a collaborative
release with Brannon Hungness (also featured on this release) coming
out on Entr'acte (UK) this spring (2006). [heavy duty vinyl cover,
with full color insert and "prism" overlay. factory-colored CDR]

New Releases since 7/6/2006 (39 items)
======================================
1/3 Octave Band - Tarakohe/Ritual Of Gravity (7inch) - fusetron $5.00
""If you've ever heard of New Zealand musician Bill Wood, chances are
that it was related to his work with Campbell Kneales Birchville Cat
Motel. But Bill has his own line of space rock/guitar drone/massive
atmopsherics as well, and he records them as 1/3 Octave Band. Woods
music is new to my ears but its highly impressive. He takes a very
maxist approach to drones, filling the pulses of his endless
frontiers with shifting arrays of instrumental intrigue and ominously
pulsing lights. A great thing, and on that thick Czech vinyl that
weighs about a pound. What more could you want?" - Byron Coley, WIRE.
Edition of 250."
Agents at Midnight - s/t (CD) - Quodlibet $10.00
"The full-length debut of noise-jazz duo Agents At Midnight, and a
real pro-pressed CD in an edition of 500 copies, the first in 5
years! Meticulously constructed from hours and hours of recording
sessions, this album is a distillation of all the many sounds and
styles explored by this duo. Rumbling bassy drones, unflinchingly ear-
piercing examinations of feedback tones, dizzyingly fast sample-based
pieces, musique concrete-inspired collage. And on all of it, sax and
electronics flow subtly into one another, bleeding over until the
authorship of sounds is often uncertain. Agents At Midnight inhabits
a weird hybrid territory somewhere between abstract modern improv,
harsh noise, and free jazz, sometimes blending these styles,
sometimes veering between them." - limited to 500, co-released with
Fargone
Area C - traffics and discoveries (CD) - Last Visible Dog $10.00
"Another fantastic CD on Last Visible Dog Records by an artist you've
never heard of before. Area C's music is constructed mostly from
guitar loops + effects, but this only hints at the final sound. While
the process is in some way reminiscent of the old Frippertronics, the
results here are far from cold, producing atmospheric tracks that
ultimately sound more like the beautiful washes of Stephano Pilia
than the 'one man with a guitar + effects' might suggest. Ultimately,
'traffics and discoveries' is a warm and immediately accessible album
that I found myself listening to time and time again. I suppose in
that respect I might compare it to Labradford's Mi media naranja,
which in LVD-speak translates to: A great album which doesn't forget
amidst the experimentation how to make simple, gorgeous music."
Bhob Rainey - Two Bites of a Bitter Sweet (7inch) - Evolving Ear $7.00
"Bhob Rainey is an established bigwig of the global improv/noise/
experimental underground as a result of his work alongside trumpeter
Greg Kelley in the influential duo, nmperign, his direction of the
improvising juggernaut, The BSC, and his numerous solo works and
collaborations with the likes of Jason Lescalleet, Gunter Muller,
Ralf Wehowsky, Le Quan Ninh, Alessandro Bosetti, and Michel Doneda,
among others. Two Bites of a Bitter Sweet is his first release of
purely electronic music, and Evolving Ear is tickled to be the
messenger on this one. The material on the two side-long, 33rpm
pieces ranges from homemade synth textures to field recordings from
Lisbon, Venice, Huelva, and other, unremembered locations. There's
some singing by Naomi Yang (Damon and Naomi) and Bhob himself, and
some words of wisdom from Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Overall, a woozy
alternate reality is offered for repeated dream pool swims.
Beautiful, hallucinatory artwork by Elaine Kaufmann."
Birchville Cat Motel - Crestfallen (7inch) - Killer $7.00
"Birchville Cat Motel are one of NZ best kept secrets, or maybe it's
not this big secret anymore - after releasing platters on Ecstatic
Peace, Betley Welcomes Careful Drivers, Drunken Fish and Corpus
Hermeticum. This is their first seven inch vinyl single (several
lathe cuts exists) and what a single it is. Beautiful drones builds
into a blissful heaven, two cuts that serves as an perfect
introduction to the wild world of Campbell Neale, master of sermons
at the Birchville Cat Motel camp. Comes in a stunning colour cover
designed by the man himself. 45 rpm, edition of 300 where 100 are on
transparent dark red vinyl"
Birchville Cat Motel - Curved Surface Destroyer (3CD) - Last Visible
Dog $18.00
"Three CD live retrospective covering 1998-2006 and including shows
in New Zealand, Japan, Denmark and Scotland. Chronologically
organized, the album also shows the evolution of Birchville's sound
from the mid 90's slowly emerging drone-fields (and use of found
sounds) to the more dynamic sound we have come to know from the more
recent releases such as Beautiful Speck Triumph and Chi Vampires. For
Campbell Kneale, this release is a 3 hour aural report on the state
of things, capturing the full spirit of what he's accomplished over
the past 10 years. In doing so, he's assembled the best possible
overview of his work under one title, without rehashing any material
from previous releases. Thus, what we have here is a 3 disc best-of,
featuring all new material!"
Courtis / Kiritchenko / Moglass - s/t (CD) - Carbon Records $10.00
Collaboration album by Anla Courtis, Andrey Kiritchenko and the
Moglass. Co-released by Carbon Records, Nexsound, Gold Soundz,
Tibprod and 1000+1 TiLt. tracklist: (1-3) by andrey kiritchenko
(sound sources by anla courtis, bandura, objects and field recordings
by andrey kiritchenko), (4-6) by the moglass (sound sources by anla

DEL - No Escape from the Valley of the Cannibals (7inch) - Killer $7.00
"Fairly structured, and no uncontrolled noise-bleedings. But; exotic
drums, guitar textures, drifting loops and source-sounds from
seventies erotic cannibal films. Building towards a quite stunning
climax. Personell are Kjell R. Jenssen on percussion, Lasse Marhaug
on mixing and construction, Per Gisle Galåen on guitartreatment and
Fredric Sevendal as guitar-slave. 33 rpm, edition of 500 where 50 are
on heavy blue vinyl (sold out), 250 are on transparent green spotted
vinyl and 200 are on heavy black vinyl."
DEL - Lehnstuhl sagt alles (LP) - ohm $16.00
Dual - Pyroclastics (CDR) - Quodlibet $6.00
"Doug Theriault and Ed Chang atom-smash supersonic guitar frequencies
with laptop-generated blender blast-beats to create 16 non-stop ear-
pummeling electro-noise action tracks. Improv, destroyed. This is
Dual at their most-focused, and most-insane..."
Excepter - Self Destruction (LP) - fusetron $12.00
"Players: John Fell Ryan: Vocals, Programming, Processing, Synth; Dan
Hougland: Programming, Synth, Echo; Caitlin Cook: Vocals, Echo;
Calder Martin: Vocals, Guitar, Percussion; Nathan Corbin: Synths.
"Self Destruction" was recorded in the winter of 2004 and mixed,
edited and reprocessed mostly in the winter of 2005. Self Destruction
is the first Excepter record to be feature multi-track recording and
overdubbing. Outside of Dan Houglands drum programming and a few
vision directives from producer John Fell Ryan, the playing is
entirely improvised by the group. Self Destruction is also the first
Excepter record to prominently feature the polyphonic synthesizer
playing of Nathan Corbin. The husband-wife duo of Caitlin Cook and
Calder Martin make the final statement on the album as they take sole
vocal duties on the last track, Your House. This recording has been
edited short for maximum sonic impact on vinyl." - Recording Notes.
"First off, Self Destruction is a house record. Pe
rhaps more in spirit than in its realized form, but if that sounds
like a joke, stop reading. New Yorks most amorphous five-necked
entity (which includes Other Musics own Dan Hougland) have never been
strangers to taking the longer, more undulating gravel road, as
evidenced by the stretched out subterranean sermons on last years Ka
album. On Self Destruction , Excepter crawl out of the cellar and
into the warehouse. This is a house record. If Xenakis had made one.
It is throbbing mental machine music that (much like the quintets
live shows) appears to detour, but often climaxes with the religious
fervor of a Wicker Man/Moodymann ritual. Definitely more Black
Mahogani than Black Dice. Excepter just traveled all over New Weird
America, and torched it in the process. Incendiary." - AK, Other Music."
Francisco Lopez - absolulte noise emsemble (2CD) - Blossoming Noise
$16.00
"francisco lópez's absolute noise ensemble 2CD set featuring: alain

Gang Gang Dance - s/t (LP) - fusetron $14.00
“Gang Gang Dance are a group composed of well-known entities (in and
around NYC in particular) but have left a sporadic, almost shadowy,
impression upon people nonetheless. Various members play/have played
in various other bands. Theyll surface to play a clutch of shows,
most all well-attended, only to disappear again (as regards to any
kind of reliable congregation). Oh, and theres also been no record to
speak of, save a 100-copy CD, more or less fleetingly manifested for
an art event with probably somewhere that amount of attendees.
Anyways, now we have a document, albeit LP only, and thankfully
definitely a good one. The opening female vocal ululations soon
enough refract electronically, and the summoned whalesong dimension
spires into an urgent metempsychotic groove. Coming as they do from
different angles, its safe to assume there is humanity to the
postproduction approach on here. Indeed the first side in its
totality achieves a narrative facility which, when sized up a
gainst the nature of its parts, could remind one of a more quietly-
alloyed Chrome. It does not end there, in fact there is something of
a sense of unfinished business, and the second side strikes off with
a snapping dream of desert suspense. Machinic industry rises up here
too though, marking yet another salient entre into the crafted
spuriousness GGD seek to espouse. An open drone fills for much of the
half, accumulating a lyric denouement that possesses overtures toward
melody and texture but less toward propulsive mien. Again, and as
always with this outfit, not so fast, especially in assuming the
accumulation will not build anew, and fairly dramatically, before the
end. And it is when it in fact does that sadly deceased member Nathan
Maddox joins the fray most obviously, his vox working up the Can-like
lather along with the suddenly more brash (especially after the
subdued interlude) compatriots, everything spiking up to the sendoff
digitized muezzin wail.” - Dan Houglan!
d; Other Music. Features Tim DeWit (ex-Cranium, Ssab Songs,
Angelblood, White Magic, Neil Michael Hagerty, Cass McCombs), Brain
DeGraw (ex-Cranium, Ssab Songs, Angelblood), Liz Bougatsos (Actress,
Angelblood), Josh Diamond (Ssab Songs), and Nathan Maddox. Housed in
a full color gatefold jacket. Repressed!!"
Geoff Mullen - thrtysxtrllnmnfstns (CD) - Entschuldigen $12.00
"after a long wait (some would say too long) i’m extremely glad to
present geoff mullen’s debut mass-market album, released on my own
entschuldigen label. geoff and i have spent the greater part of the
last 2 weeks meticulously assembling these bad-boys, making sure the
drawstrings for the cloth bags were just so; hand-gluing the artwork
to the digipack front/back(s), cutting and cropping the photos, and
finally inserting everything into resealable mylar bags and placing
the stickers on front. a labor of love? most certainly. as this is
geoff’s first “proper” release, we both wanted to make it special.
and i do feel like we’ve succeeded! here’s the original description i
wrote regarding geoff’s private-issue version of this same record,
and the “label copy” down in the “label description” section :: “one
day the phone rang and it was geoff... “hello... are you a record
store?” “no, but i do have some records for sale... you’re welcome to
come over... where are you right now”
“two blocks away...” and so i met geoff and his friend danny, sent
them off back to allston with a few mementos after a nice nervous
chat. a few weeks later (although it could have been days) i heard a
thump on my porch @ 3am, grabbed the broom handle and lept with a
great huzzah at... nothing. the next morning when i left to go to
rustica there was a cd-r taped to the door (this is not a rare
occurence around here, something about the thought of my tuff beard
must scare off certain creative elements just as they’re about to
ring the doorbell) in an exquisite fold-out hand-screened cover with
faulty-typography. being a callous bastard i promptly filed it and
didn’t think much of it until a few months later when it lept,
literally (as an artifict of the nature of geoff’s carefully
handcrafted packaing it had attached itself to a copy of walter de
maria “drums and nature” disc, which i was gently trying to pry from
the grasp of said storage medium) from the overstuffed demo pi!
le/music shelf /inbox. recognizing this as a sentient act by an
otherwise lifeless object i opted to listen... and i’m very glad i
did. geoff’s demo may very well be the best demo i’ve ever received
(if the boxes of cdrs above my record shelves can be judged by volume
alone i have received around 800 of them) for myriad reasons... it’s
not idm, and in fact geoff does not use computers in the recording
process (which, in this day & age is unheard of). i wouldn’t even
classify geoff’s music as dance music, or even as any sort of post-
dance-music hybrid (ambient electronica, mego-lineage abstraction,
etc...) plus despite (and probably because of) his meager tools of
trade (guitar, bias-altered amplifiiers, and various looping and
delay boxes) it doesn’t sound wholly like anything one thing i’ve
ever heard... although there are certainly elements of things i hold
dear (and this could be the pseudo-ephedrine talking but i imagine
geoff listens to a great deal of sandy bull, lore!
n mazzacane connors, jim o’rourke, and nick zammuto’s music). !
so... th
is here is a small-run edition of that first, fateful demo, which
geoff graciously duplicated for the fine folks that shop here @ mms
to check out. mr. mullen will soon be on to great things (the
entschuldigen label, home of the forthcoming/recent hrvatski bootleg
disc, at my behest, have signed geoff on for a single or two) and
this is your chance to get than one fateful, truly handmade artifact
before the hammer drops. i strongly urge you to do so...”"
Geoff Mullen - The Air in Pieces (CD) - Last Visible Dog $10.00
"The Wire's new super star, Geoff Mullen, is nothing new to us. Here
in Providence he's a staple at nearly any show worth seeing, but
instead of developing a solid roster of standards, every night it is
something different, he's trying something new that nobody has tried
before (or at least that he hasn't tried before...) LVD was proud to
share Geoff Mullen with the world on our 6 CD Invisible Pyramid comp,
which was shortly followed by a full length CD on Entschuldige, which
has already received much acclaim. This second full-length CD shows
Mullen working in much the same way he does live, namely, 'The Air in
Pieces' is a completely different side of Mullen than the one we hear
on his first CD and the compilation. Comparisons come in two forms:
It is easy to think of the Neil Young that wrote the Dead Man
soundtrack, just as it is easy to think of Keiji Haino in pure guitar
exploration mode (those darker Fushitsusha moments), but it isn't
musicians one thinks of when they l
isten to 'The Air in Pieces'. Instead come vacant worlds, glaciers
and the near frozen ecosystems underneath them, endless skylines and
silence save the sound of your own breath. If there is a soundtrack
to that perfect, beautiful isolation, Mullen's efforts here seem
right on the mark. "
Hrvatski - irrevocably overdriven break freakout megamix (CD) -
Entschuldigen $10.00
"the second pressing of this all-time mms best seller arrived just
this afternoon. while i’m still in the process of cutting up all the
new custom paper and putting them all together i wanted to let you
know a few things about the repress: 1). the pressing plant fixed the
error which resulted in the new hrvatski logo being printed in
halftone black over the white flood/base coat, instead of “knocking-
out” of the white flood/base coat to the silver cd face, and as such,
the new hrvatski logo now “knocks-out” of the white flood/base coat
to the silver cd face. so... yes, the 2nd-press copies look much
nicer and i don’t cringe when i see the disc art 2). as the
acquisition of the first batch of custom/handmade papers was
something of an experiment, and as i learned much from said
experiment, the 2nd pressing features an evenmoresodareisay amazing
selection of weird nepalese blockprints and very cool metallic
textured/embossed patterns (see the updated cover-scan to your left.) 3
). i wasn’t really going to repress this thing until a few of my
distributors sent in restock orders, mentioning that they really
enjoyed the disc! this was a real boost and as i want to turn the
label into something a bit more regular, i ordered the repress to
meet demand. with every copy sold that’s one step closer to the next
entschuldigen edition (of which there are currently three planned.)
4). i hate finite-editions of anything that people will want down the
road... but then again i don’t want to have another 1100 discs
sitting in my room waiting to bought (there’s already enough in
here!) so i’ll be assembling these in small batches throughout the
summer, possibly into the fall. after that it’ll be time to move on
to the next hrvatski-project and all latent copies of this will be
sold off... <--- original description ---> here it is... after a
short wait... the mysterious “hrvatski bootleg” i’ve been prattling
on about. a very nice looking thing featuring a two-color !
metallic sticker and a booklet cut from one of twenty different
kinds of custom metallic cardstock on my kitchen table with a rodahle
guillotine, then stuffed into a cool variopac “trigger-action”
booklet box in the reckankomplex living room over the last few weeks
by myself (with help from andy solomon and petra-pixm)."
Hurray - Dreams, Not Soft Illusion (LP) - fusetron $13.00
"Hurray is Zak Prekop, Josh Brand, Pete Mandradjieff & Rich Aldrich.
They hail from the hidden sectors of New York City, and have released
one 7" on the skul record label and recently presented their first
art show at the Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery also of New York City. This
is their first full length recording and is a must for fans of
ambiguous, anomalous, and unobtrusive sound creation whose mystery is
not invoked by hyperbole, pseudo-mythology or fake histories, but by
giving full allowance to otherness and seeking beauty by allowing it
to happen, which often means allowing it not to happen. Mishandled
guitars, unknown electronics, amplified percussives and various
layers of buzz coagulate and dissipate in measured restraint. I
hesitate to use blighted terms like "lowercase" music, as Hurray shys
not from some harsher territories and melodic (if emaciated and
ghostly) material sometimes drifts into consciousness; two things I
think of as contrasting w/ the more didactic, "
European" music associated w/ said term. So, Ill avoid terminology
and just say Im very glad to know this record." - Greg Kelley, 12/27/05.
Jason Finkbeiner - Dedicated to Rochester Charles (LP) - American
Tapes $13.00
"UPS HARDCORE...or at least thats what the grooves say... THAT's
ROCHESTER CHARLES!...Fave drummer/UPS dude... Pengo's Jason
Finkbeiner rips some SERIOUS one handed guitar flurry... NO EFFECTS
but psychedelic as fuck eastern tinged solo guitar... all snorted out
for the man w/ the plan ROCHESTER CHARLES... my favorite Royal Trux
fan...'NOW THERE WAS A FUCKIN BAND!'.... AM Tapes one-sider LP with
glued art b-side..includes photocopied letter from Rochester Charles
to myself regarding a conversation we had about favorite
drummers....Dude forgot Charlie Ondras, but that's cool...he
remembered the dude from MOXY... HAIL & KILL!!!!"
John Wiese - Black Magic Pond (CD) - Blossoming Noise $12.00
"Compounded recycling report from the East Coast and debut solo
outing on Blossoming Noise, following LHD’s release “Young &
Restless”. In Wiese’s output, Black Magic Pond sits somewhere between
the density of Arrhythmia Wave Burst and Panner Crash but working
within the same conceptual framework of his recycling trilogy Magical
Crystal Blah. Housed in a digipak."
KK Null - Ergosphere (CD) - Blossoming Noise $12.00
"Ergosphere was recorded live during Kazuyuki Kishino’s (Zeni Geva,
etc.) tour of Russia in late 2005, specifically on his only two solo
dates, live at Moscow Palace of Youth in Moscow Russia October 5,
2005 and “Festival Hea Uus Heli” Kanuti Gildi Saal in Tallinn Estonia
on October 7, 2005. An uneasy balance of lull and divide"
Merzbow - Tumeric 4CD (OTHER) - Blossoming Noise $39.00
"Brooding harsh malevolence packed into a 4 disc box-set with
luxurious foil stamped slip cover & photos of the in-flight bomber
taken by Jenny Akita. Abrasive analog and digital wings give Tumeric
flight as an altogether different bird. Limited edition of 900."
Nicolas Felix Kauffman and Stefan Geoffrey Neville - OWL LOW (CDR) -
Carbon Records $10.00
46+ minutes of acoustic guitar, bells, woodwinds, primitive
percussion, patented Pumice-style buzzing guitar, organ/keyboard,
drone-vocals and more from Stefan Neville (aka Pumice) and Nicolas
Kauffman (part of Family Underground - Denmark) . recorded 2005 in a
giant concrete room, this release is a fine companion to Stefan and
Nicolas' other recordings on various other labels such as Last
Visible Dog, Soft Abuse, Audiobot, Chocolate Monk, QBICO, Into the
Lunar Night). [packaged in hand-silkscreened cardboard cover in
various colors]
Origami Arktika - at Royspytten (7inch) - Killer $7.00
"The same Origami Arktika dreamteam line up as the last single on
killer - at Snippen. This time the Norwegian folk music undercurrents
are even more pronounced, including their very own version of a
Jørund Telnes song (Norwegian folk music performer). Since last time
the band has released several CDs - >brook< - a spilt CD with Lull
and a live CD from Poland. This single is the first material to
arrive from their latest session and hopefully the rest of this
material sees the light of day. Origami Arktika sounds like nothing
else on earth, a bit folk music, a bit drone rock, a bit outlandish
as a freeform arctic storm. Personnel are Tore H. Bøe, Kai S.
Mikalsen, Bjarne Larsen, Rune Flaten and Kjell Ø. Braaten. Current
activities include Salvatore, several Origami fractions, Kobi, Ka,
Sketch, Palace of Pleasure and a lot more. Beautiful colour cover
courtesy of Jarle Hrafn Grindhaug. 45 rpm, edition of 300 where 100
are on dark lilac vinyl "
Pelt - Heraldic Beasts (2LP) - eclipse $17.00
"Intense 2LP survey of Pelt geography around the turn of the century,
compiling live recordings the band issued on cdrs in tiny editions or
on comps plus some unreleased material. Combinnes the most all-out
electric attacks Pelt's ever deigned to release, plus some of the
growing drone float that preceded/coincided with the band's jump into
acoustic material. Off the hook gatefold packaging that maybe offers
hints of sources, etc. Full list of recording dates/locations/prior
releases is supposed to be posted on www.klang.org soon. This dbl lp
set is sure to blow some minds - especially those who have come to
know Pelt in the past 2-3 years. These early recordings (1998-2003)
are heavy and sure to please those who have been waiting patiently fo
this. The packaging is incredible, too - with beautiful artwork and a
very sturdy gatefold sleeve. Dig it."
Peter Wright - Pariahs Sing Om (3CD) - Last Visible Dog $18.00
"A three CD set collecting some of Peter Wright's best material
including all of 'Pariahs sing Om' , 'Catch a spear as it flies' and
parts of his previous release on LVD, 'Duna'."
Peter Wright - red lion (CD) - Digitalis Industries $12.00
"You can remove a Kiwi from New Zealand but you sure as hell can't
remove New Zealand from a Kiwi. Such is the case with Christchurch
transplant, Peter Wright. Over the course of a decade, Wright has
etched his name in glass in the annals of drone-world superstardom.
And while I'm not sure what that really means, the point is that when
it comes to soaring dronescapes, few do it better than Peter Wright.
He has helped pave the way with contemporaries such as Birchville Cat
Motel and Double Leopards, but clearly has his own distinct voice.
With his past few albums, Wright seems the logical successor to
native Kiwi, sound manipulator extraordinaire, Roy Montgomery. "Red
Lion" is Wright's latest incarnation and, once again, pushes the
boundaries of what he can do with his trademark 12 string Danelectro
to the absolute outer limits. He pushes the limits of simplicity
without ever breaking. Wright's albums are a thing of sheer, pure
beauty, existing in a vacuum where nothing on the
outside can tamper with their grace. Even with his lofty
intentions, "Red Lion" is immediately approachable and grabs the
listener from the opening notes. As always, Peter Wright offers up
something wholly infectious and undebatably magnificent."
Pumice - Pipi's / Onion Union (7inch) - CMR $12.00
"lathe-cut 7" record - edition of 60 copies - blue textured paper
outer sleeve, brown paper inner sleeve. Two fantastic live tracks by
Stefan Neville recorded in 2005 at two of New Zealands best bars.
Sits in the noisier spectrum of the Pumice career which spans
probably 15 years or so. Collectable and probably already gone."
Pumice - Yeohnahvienna (CD) - Soft Abuse $10.00
"Recorded direct to DAT while temporarily living in Vienna, Austria,
Yeohnahvienna is yet another grand sonic leap forward for our man
Stefan Neville. Don’t fret – there’s still plenty of sludge and goop
to mask his beautiful, melancholic musings. Another stellar feather
in the cap after years and years of quality releases…. "
RICHARD YOUNGS and ANDREW PAINE - Mauve Dawn (LP) - fusetron $13.00
"For the past eight years Andrew Paine and Richard Youngs have met on
almost every Sunday and recorded music. Mauve Dawn is the result of
ten meetings during 2004. Its nine tracks feature processed epinette
des vosges, glockenspiel, vintage keyboards and guitars alongside
granularly synthesised household objects hacked together with
resonated voices and filtered bells in a stereo field heavy on ring
modulation. One part of the Mauve trilogy, this is an instrumental
album of classic length." - Richard Youngs & Andrew Paine.
Sightings - Castle Moat/Invisible Coats (7inch) - fusetron $4.00
"I dont wanna eat McDonalds, I wanna eat Sightings!" - Jack Brewer;
Saccharine Trust, , May 19, 2005. "Tour" single, edition of 500.
Plays at 33 rpm, despite what the label says.
Sightings - End Times (CD) - fusetron $12.00
"Fiery phoenix, four horsemen, or just plain ferocious, Sightings is
back with another free rock H-Bomb. Comprised primarily of
improvisations and recorded for the price of cassette tape, they
leave no doubt western civilization is coming to an end....But
seriously folks, this CD is companion to a vinyl release on the EN/OF
label. EN/OF is a series of releases from the Bottrop-Boy record
label. Every release contains a 12" record & an art edition and is
limited to 100 copies. Sightings is paired with the German painter
Daniel Richter who contributed an exclusive piece, "Das Schönste Ist
Geschichte", an offset print,30x90 cm, with hand-painted elements.
The LP features three tracks from "End Times" as well as another
exclusive track. Richter was kind enough to lend artwork for the CD
as well. "End Times" is 56 minutes of head-rinsing to take the
millennarian fever to the next level."
Spin-17 with Jeffrey Shurdut & Ravi Padmanabha - 21st Century Folk
Music Vol 3 (CDR) - Quodlibet $10.00
"Motoko Shimizu (voice, turntable, toys), Ed Chang (sax and radio),
Jeffrey H Shurdut(guitar), Ravi Padmanabha (percussion). Free soul
improvisations - this incarnation of Spin-17 (with special sauces
Jeffrey Shurdut & Ravi Padmanabha) takes the best parts of free
improv folk-skronk and ladles it over an epiphany-prone drone-groove
rhythm section resulting in a full-flavored creative music casserole."
Storm Bugs - Up the Middle Down the Sides (LP) - fusetron $13.00
"After some twenty years in the wilderness when Storm Bugs were known
only to a handful of aficionados, the DIY electronic duo were
rediscovered in 2000 when they were included on the deliciously dodgy
but possibly seminal bootleg LP I Hate the Pop Group. A CD of the
Bugs finer moments followed shortly after on the reactivated Snatch
Tapes label and prompted one receiver to comment "How could such
sounds, radically challenging the accepted texture of electronic
music, have been recorded over 20 years ago?" Another review
suggested that.. "they were spiritual forefathers to Oval and todays
Clicks & Cuts generation". Since 2001 Storm Bugs have featured on
stations such as Resonance FM and WFMU and there have been more
archive recordings by Philip Sanderson (one half of the duo) reissued
by labels such as Anomalous and Die Stadt including collaborations
with Organum main man David Jackman. There was even an EP of new
material The Bugs are Back put out by Klanggalerie in 2002. Ma
ny have thought that there must be more vintage Storm Bugs recordings
in the attic and after a 2 year period of intense rummaging and
restoration Fusetron are pleased to present a further installment of
Storm Bugs material from 1978-82 entitled Up the Middle Down the
Sides. The LP delves deep into the Snatch Tapes sound banks to
produced two continuous collaged sides of often-spontaneous sonic
experimentation. Tracks such as Skid Pan Buoy and Thin Line Flash of
Traffic use the classic Bugs DIY instrumentation of rewired radios,
scratched vinyl and disemboweled guitars (Storm Bugs were circuit
bending before the term was invented). Other pieces such as Little
Bob Minor exploit the sonic capabilities of that most eccentric of
British synthesizers the VCS3. But this is not simply a barrage of
industrial mayhem for spliced into the fabric of controlled excess
are moments of contemplative soundscapes such as 111 and Waspbottle,
the latter scored for a duet of milk bottle and wasp!
synthesiser. In short Up the Middle Down the Sides is possibly the
first (and last) DIY electronic concept LP." - Storm Bugs. The Storm
Bugs are Philip Sanderson and Steven Ball (with special guest David
Jackman of Organum on the track In The Naked Girls Majesty).
Sudden Infant - radiorgasm (CD) - Blossoming Noise $12.00
"Reissue of the extremely limited first Sudden Infant LP from 1991,
transfered from the original master tapes. Classic Sudden Infant /
Schimpfluch noise dramas featuring Joke Lanz, B. Lingg, Inzekt & Dave
Phillips.Recorded live at radio LoRa Zurich on 30th November 1990!
Artwork by Francoise Duvivier. Essential listening. Joint release by
Blossoming Noise (USA) and Harbinger Sound (UK)."
The Flying Luttenbachers - Cataclysm (CD) - ugExplode $12.00
"The ultimate sonic battle between The Behemoth and The Void!!! The
cosmos are shaken and nothing survives! 58 minutes - 9 all-new studio
cuts of unflinching rock modernism featuring Weasel Walter (drums),
Ed Rodriguez (guitar), Mike Green (bass) and Mick Barr (guitar).
features an epic cover of the fourth movment of Olivier Messiaen's
"L'Ascension" and the even more epic 15 minute composition
"Regime" (5 years in the making!) This CD will turn heads into chop
suey and transport you across dimensions. this is a real, honest-to-
gosh replicated and shrinkwrapped CD made in a factory limited to 500
copies."
Tore Honore Boe - Knekk (7inch) - Killer $7.00
"Tore H. Bøe should by all rights be well known to you all from his
many years as a performing artist. Sometimes in various Origami
fractions, sometimes in different hotshot bands and sometimes on his
own, as he is on this single. Alone Tore specialises in
micromanipulations. Glitch without a Laptop. The wonderful world of
contact microphones. The comfort of objects. Tapes and trolls. The
seriously stunning Siesta on CD last year was a revelation. Now he's
moving to Gran Canaria to set up recording facilities to be known as
Hacienda. Could be well worth a visit. Righteous colour cover by Tore
himself, now to be known as a designer also. 45 rpm, edition of 300
where 100 are on clear tangerine vinyl"
Uton - mystery revolution (CD) - Digitalis Industries $12.00
"Tampere, Finland has become quite the musical hotbed over the past
few years. Staples like Avarus and Kemialliset Ystävät make there
beds in the gnome-infested waters throughout the city. Uton is
perhaps the country's best kept secret. "Mystery Revolution" is a
sonic excursion through the Finnish forests unlike any other. Massive
drones are balanced by the hypnotic dance of flutes, bells, and
keyboards. Underneath everything runs a mind-altering stream of
fuzzed-out brainwaves. Every corner you turn, there's another smiling
nymph, begging you to follow the golden path into the mystic woods.
Uton's minimalist rumblings are there to infect and enchant, and
Hirvonen never fails to impress. The mask is off with "Mystery
Revolution," and Uton will remain shrouded in obscurity no more. This
pine-scented excursion may by mysterious on the surface, but overall
is a thing of beauty, lying in wait for the perfect time to infect
you. "Mystery Revolution" is proof that Uton's dreamy sou
ndscapes are one of Finland's finest exports. "
Various Artists - California 10LP (OTHER) - RRRecords $75.00
Troniks, Ground Fault Recordings and RRRecords are proud to present
this limited edition document of contemporary California based
experimental, noise, drone and improvised music. Twenty artists each
fill an lp side of this 10 x LP boxed set. Included: Amps For Christ,
The Cherry Point, Joe Colley, Control, Gerritt, GX Jupitter-Larsen,
Moth Drakula, Oscillating Innards, Open City, Damion Romero, Rubber O
Cement, SIXES, The Skaters, Solid Eye, Spastic Colon, Tralphaz, John
Wiese, Xome, RHY Yau, Yellow Swans. Compiled by Phil Blankenship
(Troniks). Limited edition of 1,000 copies.
Yermo - s/t (CD) - Last Visible Dog $10.00
"Austere drone / sound collage / aural texture. The two pieces here
(one at 50 min, the other at 30) fuse ideas from contemporary
minimalism (Bernard G?nter, Annea Lockwood, etc.), Japanese noise
artists (such as Aube) and 20th century classical (Ligetti,
Pendereki, etc.) to create slowly evolving soundscapes that
occasionally build to crescendos or reveal accidental harmony. Yermo
made up the electronic aspects of MCMS (LVD 061) and has had previous
releases on LVD as well as Birchville Cat Motel's Celebrate Psi
Phenomena label." "Yermo offer up a glorious wash of cascading upper
register dreaminess, like the sound of rubbed champagne glasses,
crystalline and delicate, over an mesmerising thrum that subtly
oscillates, creating an hypnotic almost-rhythm. The whole thing
slowly builds in intensity until it's a howling storm of feedback and
buzz, dotted with thick bursts of jagged NOISE, all washing over you
in a wave of thick warm sound. Fans of Total, Vibracathedral Orchestra
, Sunroof!, the Dead C and the like bset start paying close attention
to Yermo, 'cause they have yet to disappoint!" --Aquarius Records
