Format: 3CD
Label: Carbon Records
Price: $20.00
Catalog ID: CR99
a year+ in the making, and originally slated for a 10YR celebration,
this compilation is documentation of amazing people/artists i've
worked with over the past, now, 12 years. it also started out as a
double CD project, but with the growing list of people i wanted to
involve, and the overwhelming volume of confirmations, i had to grow
it to a triple CD (and even had to do some trimming to fit that
format). the release is packaged in a standard-size DVD case, with a
full-color cover, and holds the 3 CDs as well as a full-color card-
stock insert. the dvd case is then housed in a natural-color cotton
bag with single-color ink stamp art/logo. the sounds range from quiet
ambient sounds, to meandering guitar work, to outsider rock, to full
on noise, as well as a folk/pop track here and there. [limited
edition of 500] full list of artists: http://www.carbonrecords.com/

Dialing In - Cows in Lye (CD) - Pseudoarcana $13.00
"Dialing In is the ecstatic roaring psychedelic drone project of
Seattle based sound artist Reita Piecuch. Utilising the natural
acoustics of a series of reverberant spaces she weaves together super
saturated soundscapes by recording in one environment, playing back
in another, and then re-recording this recording playing back in yet
another environment (etc..). On 'Cows in Lye' the original sound
sources range from loops of field recordings from a trip to India,
piano, and the shifting drones of a "Shruti Box" (electronic
Tamboura). One track also features a long stream of consciousness
vocal performance from avant-crooner 'Herb Diamante'..! After a trek
with recording gear through the caves, cathedrals and bunkers of
Seattle these ingredients are transformed into huge and sublimely
distorted quasi-melodic dreamscapes. The album lifts off with an
ecstatic roar and the intensity doesn't let up until one is released
exultant in the green flash of a setting sun... "
Heathen Prayers - acoustics portrayed (3inch CDR) - h-p imprint $10.00
"heathen prayers; sander wildeboer with laurens karsten h-p imprint,
hpcdr006, ltd to 48 (available) hand numbered cdr in paper sleeve
with text attached to the back of one unique piece of a painting.
tracks: a magnificent whole (4'44) / falling into pieces (3'28) /
scattered all over (3'23) / impossible to retrieve (5'17). ---- first
laurens made an improvised painting to recordings of acoustic guitar
improvisations by sander. then the painting was divided into 48
pieces and the concept of the division of it, was then again
musically improvised to using acoustic guitar, several wind
instruments and other stuff laying around. the concept of this ep may
be interpreted as the course of a social matter."
Lake of Dracula - Skeletal Remains (CD) - Savage Land $13.00
"Between 1995 and 1997 Lake Of Dracula forged a singular approach to
dissonant, minimalistic rock music pre-dating both the neo-"no wave"
nostalgia trip (popularized by bands like Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Liars)
and the current noise rock insurgence (led by Lightning Bolt and Wolf
Eyes) by years. based in Chicago, LOD was a veritable midwestern
underground supergroup featuring James "Marlon" Magas ( Couch ,
Magas ), Weasel Walter ( The Flying Luttenbachers , XBXRX ), Heather
M. ( The Scissor Girls ), "The Manhattanite" (a.k.a. Al Johnson from
U.S. Maple ) and Jessica Ruffins ( Jaks , Sea of Tombs ). Formed in
late 1995, the band issued forth a succinct manifesto made of
propulsive anti-rock beats and terse guitar cacophony topped with
cryptic, evocative vocal assaults. the net result of this music was
one of powerful, hard-edged surrealism in contrast to the
introspective "post rock" more associated with the time and place.
Their sole self-titled studio album was issued by skin gr
aft records in early 1997 featuring production help by Jim O'Rourke
( Sonic Youth , etc.). after a final west coast tour in summer 1997,
the band called it quits and the various members went on to further
infamy with their various pursuits. since then, the name Lake Of
Dracula continues to be whispered in reverence throughout the rock
underground. "Skeletal Remains" collects previously unreleased
material and rare compilation and single tracks onto one CD
(remastered by Weasel Walter) with extensive liner notes and photos."
Lasse Marhaug - Spaghetti Western Rainbow (CD) - Utech $14.00
"Hailing from the land of the rising snow, Lasse Marhaug has become
one of the most commanding and respected sound artists in Norway. As
a musician and composer he has contributed to cd, vinyl and cassette
releases for labels throughout Europe, Asia and America. Aside from
solo work, Marhaug contributes to several ensembles including Nash
Kontroll (iDEAL) and a large Jazkamer unit (Smalltown Supernoise)
with black metal legends Enslaved. Having collaborated with artists
from varying fields of musik (Sunn O))), Aaron Dilloway and Maja
Ratkje) Marhaug's reach extends into musik for theatre, installations
and video. A salvo to Ennio Morricone, Spaghetti Western Rainbow
stands testament to the Italian composer's enduring influence.
Morricone collaborator Sergio Leone established the spaghetti western
genre in 1964 with A Fistful of Dollars. The director used Morricone
again to score the remaining two films in his three-part account of
greed and violence (For a Few Dollars More an
d The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.) Leone's critics were struck by his
brutal depiction of an unromantic West, but his singular style,
camera angles and extension of time made his work different from any
western that had come before. Lasse Marhaug exacts Leone's slow,
beautiful power and love for expanse with shades of Morricone's
subtle witchery to create what will inevitably be considered one of
his masterworks. Harsh, dry passages blend with drifting soundscapes,
bird calls and an asseverate guitar figure that promotes an
invigorating context for film musik. Issued on Utech Records [001] as
a micro pressing of 100 cdr copies in the winter of 2004. Lasse
Marhuag first performed this music as an improvised laptop work for
Chicago radio station WNUR. This edition finds the original piece
remastered and divided into two tracks that open and close the album.
Two unreleased tracks have been added to cpmplete the disk. Artwork
inspired by the film The Great Silence."
Leprechaun Catering - male plumage (LP) - white denim $10.00
"'Male Plumage' is Leprechaun Catering's third and finest long-
player, a fuzzy trip down the rabbit hole where red is blue and up is
down. Influenced only by animated gifs and ice cream, Leprechaun
Catering conjure the spirit of Harry Partch, if he were locked in a
room with Nickelodeon and a scratched copy of Fast Eddie's 'Acid
Thunder' as his only entertainment. Each track is enough to fill your
living room with a most pleasant gas, enjoyed best while counting
your veins and dipping fondue. There are 326 copies pressed, each on
colored vinyl (opaque orange with red and purple splatters). The a-
side center sticker is hand-numbered out of 326. 300 copies come with
four-color hand-screened chipboard sleeves."
Lgamble - 80mm O!I!O (3inch CD) - Entr'acte $8.00
"This is the first in a planned triptych of 3" CDs by English
composer Lee Gamble. Consisting of seven virtual–hybrid models of
spontaneous and ordered (non–essential goal) related celomund o!i!o,
these computer audio compositions are culled from live and studio
recordings made between 1999 and 2006, and were composed earlier this
year. Edition of 300 copies."
Motoko Shimizu - Jennie and Me (CDR) - Quodlibet $6.00
"Solo Turntable compositions for young and fun people - appropriate
for the beach, cocktail parties, crime scenes, giant squid sightings
and much more. The 5-foot woman strikes again with her sidekick
turntable Jennie - phono needles everywhere beware! (for fans of
Christian Marclay, 90's Otomo Yoshihide and DJ-collage music in
general)" [Ultra-limited edition in clear poly-keeper]
OBJEKT4 - her face among the shadows (CD) - Ravenheart $10.00
"Swe. Next dashing dark ambient album from Objekt4 "Her Face Among
the Shadows" including new never released 4 bonus songs" Each track
starts with gently undulating tones, building on that base and adding
swirling mists of sound and menacing atmosphere that ultimately
increases in anxiety. Dark horror, thriller soundtrack andcombination
of menacing atmosphere...drones build before crashing beast and heavy
bass. Rhytmic and frame-chaotic and desperate trip to other side of
light!"
Ravi Padmanabha/Daniel Carter - Nivesana (CDR) - Epoch Music $12.00
"Nivesana is a beautiful CD. A seamless integration of Indian
classical music, avant garde jazz, and electronic wizardry, the CD is
a collaboration between legendary multi-instrumentalist Daniel Carter
and percussionist Ravi Padmanabha. "Nivesana" is a Pali word with
multiple meanings: it means entering, home, settling, and it also
means attachment, clinging to. Part of the beauty of the CD is the
way Carter and Padmanabha explore all sides of the word: the music
certainly has a deep, centered quality, and yet it's also haunting,
urgent with a sense of mystery and occasional melancholy. Whenever
Carter appears on a CD, there's always a wealth of sound as he draws
on his mastery of saxophones, trumpet, flute, and clarinet. Combined
with Padmanabha's repertoire—drums, cymbals, tabla, moorsing (jaw
harp), percussion, and electronic skill—the possibilities are wide
open, and the resulting music multi-layered and rich. The seven songs
on Nivesana flow into each other effortlessly,
creating a cohesive mood and also a sense of journey. This is one
of those wonderful CDs that provide an inspiring accompaniment to
creating art, whether it's writing, painting, movement, or just plain
daydreaming. Carter can hardly be praised enough; he's a master of
creative music, and has played with everyone from Sun Ra to Medeski,
Martin, and Wood to the No Neck Blues Band. Padmanabha is clearly a
musician to watch. He's paid his dues in both the world of Indian
classical music and avant-garde jazz, and he's at ease taking the old
forms and infusing them with a fresh, inventive energy. Nivesana is
the happy result of two large talents listening to one another
closely, and with any luck this duo will release more music in future
days." - Flo Wetzel (The Squid's Ear)
Rust Ionics - moving/pictures (LP) - Quodlibet $12.00
"Ed Chang - sax, Doug Theriault - guitar, Adam Kriney - drums.
Limited to 311 copies in clear blue vinyl with clear plastic sticker
packaging. This skronk throwdown occurred in Brooklyn April 2005,
this was the first meeting between the members of noise-attack duo
Dual and the leader of the Colour Sounds/Owl Sounds freak-psych army.
So intense the metal plates were damaged during pressing. Last Exit
meets up with the Ruins to gang up on Painkiller. Turn it up to 10
and throw away the knob. A Quodlibet/Colour Sounds/Outer Limits split
release."
Self Destruct Button - natural selection of accidents (CD) - Tower
Control $10.00
"Self Destruct Button's Natural Selection of Accidents might be the
White Album of Cleveland's noise scene . A bulldozer of a song,
opening track "Comparing Cancers" mingles anger, technology,..." --
Cleveland Scene
Simon Whetham - Ascension_Suspension (CD) - Entr'acte $12.00
"These minimally-processed recordings of cable cars were made during
a trip to the Portes du Soleil region of France, in Les Gets, Morzine
and Les Lindarets. The sounds have been layered to enhance the
feelings of suspense and tension experienced during the journey. In
2000 Simon composed and recorded the soundtrack to artist Kathryn
Thomas' first solo London exhibition, and has continued to record
music for her shows, as well as working on his own experimental pieces."
Staplerfahrer - live at OT301 (3inch CDR) - Carbon Records $6.00
microsonic transmissions from a small insect walking across a large
plant, or a small being wandering across a large planet or a distant
factory churning out goods. this release entices you to listen more
and more closely to the sounds its exposing. [3" cdr in various mini
cases/sleeves with full color insert, spray-painting, etc]
Steve Baczkowski/Ravi Padmanabha - Tongue Rust & Lead Moth (CDR) -
Utech $11.00
Recorded: Buffalo, NY, 11/04. Steve Baczkowski [tenor, baritone
saxophones], Ravi Padmanabha [drums, percussion]. "Tongue Rust and
Lead Moth is the work of two communicative improvisers unafraid to
incorporate elements from all over jazz’s historical spectrum. Just
for a taste, check out the opening moments of “Moth”; Padmanabha’s
swinging cymbals and fat-back snare – so old-time, almost rhythm-and-
blues with just that touch of off-tempo post-modern hipness – are
eventually joined by an equally slinky riff from Baczkowski. It’s
repeated, tweaked and drawn out, pretty but strident. This is the
kind of interplay so often evident throughout the disc. We’re neither
given an Interstellar Space, where I get the impression that Trane
and Ali play against rather than around each other, nor is this so
much like Evan Parker and Eddie Prevost’s collaborations, which can
be intensely intimate. In fact, the duo dwells in both camps,
straddling the line from moment to moment without any pr
etense and often with stunningly cohesive results. They bob and weave
around each other, trade licks where necessary while each presents a
very convincingly independent narrative. Of course, a disc like this
has passages that don’t work, but these are forgivable in light of
what has been accomplished. Group work has clearly done this duo
good, and I’m impatient for more." -- Marc Medwin (Dusted)
Swung - Voice and Key (3inch CD) - Pseudoarcana $7.00
"Swung is Aucklands Zoe Drayton. Besides her invaluable role as the
chief archivist, promoter and all round lynchpin of the New Zealand
'new music' scene, Drayton is an active musician and composer in her
own right. 'Voice and Key' is -as the name suggests- a collection of
keyboard and voice works from the period 1996-2006. Each track is an
entity unto itself. The 1st features a simple melancholy piano figure
that is looped and cut up until it utterly fragments into a stacatto
drone, the 2nd sounds almost a found recording of private utterances,
sommeone sitting at a piano in a cool summer room. Track 3 is a
beautiful short and wordless "pop song", track 4 an abstract organ
trajectory and track 5 a radically deconstructed lullaby. 'Voice and
Key' is a extraordinarily intimate and beautiful work. It feels a
privilege to be invited in to listen."
Talibam! - Power and Terror (CDR) - Kitty Play Records $8.00
"Our first step into the world of the free jazz sorta noise, Talibam
are 3 dudes on drums, synthesizer, and Borbetomagus-like feedback
saxophone, however this cd hardly sounds like any of those
instruments are being used. They often sound more like dueling
guitars and extreme chaos. This cd-r is packaged in the pages of Noam
Chomsky’s Power and Terror and is limited to 78 copies."
The Lost Domain - sailor, home from the sea (CD) - Digitalis
Industries $12.00
"the lost domain are an avant-folk/drone/jazz/improv ensemble out of
brisbane, australia that has been at it since the late 80s, but due
to virtually no promotion has remained in obscurity. with no labels
even vaguely compatible in brisbane, and none until recently in the
rest of australia, and no overseas connections, it was easier just to
concentrate on enjoying making music and release it in limited
editions on their own shytone imprint. they figured that eventually
their track record would speak for itself and with this release were
definitely getting there. but if people just would have been able to
hear the bands epic folk/jazz improvisations earlier iam sure that
they already would have a fan base of the same size as critically
acclaimed outfits such as no neck blues band or jackie-o motherfucker."
The Lost Domain - palace (CD) - Pseudoarcana $13.00
"Brisbane avant-blues practitioners The Lost Domain have been
stalwarts of the Australian underground for nearly 20 years. Formed
around the core duo of guitarist David MacKinnon and organist/
vocalist Simon Ellaby they have released a consistently inspiring but
all too rare trickle of cdr's and have only recently begun to get the
attention that they deserve (via the "Sailor Home From the Sea" CD
(Broken Face/Digitalis 2004 (who incidentally promise a follow up
"White Man at the Door" later this year)), and some choice
compilation slots and magazine interviews). One of the most intense
and engaging live bands I have ever seen their sound is something
like a gritty cross between the spacious psychedelic ambient improv
noise of New Zealand's Sandoz Lab Technicians, and the weirder
swampier blues-stomp of Captain Beefheart. 'Palace' presents a
remarkably restrained series of subtle movements and moods that were
recorded over a few weekends in the ballroom of 'The Pink Palace', an
old and virtually abandoned hall in Brisbane. This is The Lost
Domain in full band mode with a line up that includes Leighton Craig,
Eugene Carchesio and Rick Neville. Organs and plaintive feedbacking
guitars call to each other through the reverberant emptiness. There
are dream like peaks and lulls as the dynamic slowly intensifies into
a deep deep blues howl before the whole band once more drifts away
into the ether."
The Lost Domain - white man at the door (CD) - Digitalis Industries
$12.00
"Brisbane's improvisor extraordinaires, The Lost Domain, have been
launching sonic missives into the stratosphere for almost 20 years
now. These guys were blitzing the path well-travelled by Jackie-O
Motherfucker and No Neck Blues Band, before either group even
existed. In Australia, they know how to play the blues. Maybe it's in
the water, or maybe it blows in from the ocean, but one listen to The
Lost Domain's "White Man at the Door," and there's no denying it:
these motherfuckers can play the blues. "White Man at the Door"
follows the legendary Shytone "Dead Set," a compendium of pre-war
inspired clssics compiled by Lost Domain mainman, John Henry
Calvinist (aka David Mac Kinnon), and much beloved by none other than
John Fahey. These six tracks are like nothing else the group has
released. Ragtime Frank (aka Simon Ellaby) puts in the vocal
performance of a lifetime as he extracts songs like "In My Time of
Dying" and "Frankie & Albert" from deep inside his bones. Over an ar
chaic bed of acoustic instrumentation and junkyard percussion, Ellaby
belts out gut-wrenching line after gut-wrenching line. It will bring
listeners to their knees. The pre-war inspirations behind these
tracks are obvious, but the execution and emotion is 100% authentic.
"White Man at the Door" is a lost relic. It's like something found in
a dusty corner of the Library of Congress, begging to be
rediscovered. This is the kind of album that most bands only dream of
making. It is pure, whiskey-addled perfection."
Tom Carter and Rob Horton - steeljaguar rocket (CD) - Digitalis
Industries $12.00
"Charalambides' Tom Carter and Robert Horton have become close
collaborators over the past few years, appearing in a handful of
projects together from Kyrgyz (w/ Jewelled Antler-ites Loren Chasse
and Christine Boepple) to Mudsuckers (w/ D. Yellow Swans). But when
they are stripped back to a duo, the sonic onslaught is just as dense
and impressive. "Steeljaguar Rocket" is the second album, following-
up "Lunar Eclipse" on Important Records. Horton again acts as the
puppetmaster, pulling the strings to move each sound into its right
place. Expansive improvisations and full-on psychedelic freakouts
intermingle, creating a cosmic web of enchanted debris. Fiddler
extraordinaire Hal Huges adds exponentially to the dynamics at work
with his marvellous playing on the title track. The strained violin
notes whisk the listener away to the dirt-soaked alleys of Damascus.
It's a hypnotic journey through jewel-encrusted foreign lands, like a
solo flight to sun. Everything is not peaceful on
"Steeljaguar Rocket," however. Digging further into the cataclysm
finds Carter & Horton turning up the volume knobs and cranking out
wailing solos on top of a bed of heavy drones and cacaphonic drums.
Like Horton's Future Ears project, it's equal parts noise, free jazz,
and fractured folk bliss. There is no stone unturned on "Steeljaguar
Rocket," and just as it feels as though it will collapse in on
itself, Carter & Horton bring everything back down to earth, ready to
begin again."

XNOBBQX - blues (CDR) - Pseudoarcana $8.00
"What can I say... I seriously believe this album takes urban blues
to a whole new level. Featuring seriously damaged autistic slo-mo
riffage, comatose drumming and line hum the Sydney-side duo of Mat
Earle and Nick Dan will have fans of Armpit/CJA lost for hours, their
faces lit up in big shit-eatting grins as they swim through the
glorious murk. The sheer mindnumbing deliberation and persistency of
these vaguely blues-inflected untuned guitar lines lull one into an
hypnotic trance whilst at the same time the seeming randomness of the
drummers interjections keep one anxiously on the edge of ones seat...
Overall it makes Jandek sound like Joe Satriani!"
zelienople - stone academy (CD) - Digitalis Industries $12.00
"Hailing from Chicago, Zelienople have been etching out a place for
themselves in the Windy City for the past five years. Constant
collaborators with Souled American's Scott Tuma, this quartet mixes
ghostly song structures with ambient drones better than just about
anyone. With recent releases on Time-Lag, New Zealand's Pseudoarcana,
and Tarentel's Root Strata imprint, the boys of Zelienople are rising
like vines toward the canopy. "Stone Academy" picks up where 2005's
brilliant "Ink" (recently reissued on CD by Loose Thread Recordings)
left off. It balances the simple beauty of guitar-based songs with
overwhelming, dark drones. The combination is as powerful as it is
intricate. Each note, each chord is carefully chosen and perfectly
placed; they never take too long or push too much. The attention to
detail is magnificent. Zelienople have mastered the art of making
expansive, luminescent drones sound as organic as the soil beneath
your feet. "Stone Academy" reverberates like
it's planted deep inside a lost cavern, hidden miles beneath the
surface waiting for excavation. With rich textures and challenging
soundscapes, "Stone Academy" is a wholly satisfying listening
experience. The darkness is only a canvas for the light of these
compositions to shine through. Zelienople offer up one of the year's
finest aural adventures."
