Artist: Carbon Records
Title: Carbon VINES design
Format: TSHIRT
Label: Carbon Records
Price: $10.00
Catalog ID: CR110
if you're familiar with Keith Fullerton Whitman's label Entschuldigen
label, this is the font he used for his official logo (i loved the
logo so much, i had to use that font. i pretty much wear my
Entschuldigen hoodie everyday). it looks like vines growing in and
out of the letters, which are an old-english looking type. these
shirts are light brown (almost drab-green) with cream ink.

Artist: Crazy River and Sindre Bjerga
Title: Everything We Know is Barely Being Held Together
Format: CDR
Label: Carbon Records
Price: $8.00
Catalog ID: CR148
2 live tracks recorded is Oslo and Stavanger Norway in 2005. scratchy
drone-transmissions from the north. this is some quality throb/drone/
heavy sounds. another feather in Sindre's frozen cap. [packaged in
heavy vinyl sleeve with handmade green paper, sprayed with silver.
veluum cover for liner notes on back and sprayed CD]

Artist: John Charlton
Title: Walking the Red Road
Format: CDR
Label: Carbon Records
Price: $8.00
Catalog ID: CR147
This is John's first full-length on Carbon, with, i'm sure, more to
come. former member/cohort of TenTon (now in Chicago), John lives in
the Boston area and records all sorts of sounds, guitars, tibeten
bowls, cymbals, strings, etc. he was featured on the Carbon 3CD
compilation I Don't Think the Dirt Belongs to the Grass and won this
praise from Keith Fullerton Whitman: "there’s something on here for
everyone... and in fact you might end up, like myself, enjoying just
about everything on this set, from the pieces by the names you know/
trust to those by otherwise unknowns (for example; i didn’t know john
charlton’s name, but his acoustic guitar/tibetan singing bowls/wine
glasses piece on here ended up being one of my favorite pieces.)".
This full length is a study in guitar, from repetitive/looping
acoustic and clean electric with incidental backgrounds, to busy
hammering/drumming/droning on an acoustic, to warbly electric mood
(ala LMC), to full-on saturated noise/drone. to m

irror KFW's comment, something for everyone. [packaged in heavy vinyl
sleeve with handmade red and gold paper and spray-painted CD]

Artist: Christopher Reeg
Title: el borracho
Format: CDR
Label: Carbon Records
Price: $8.00
Catalog ID: CR139
el borracho is Christopher Reeg's first solo full-length release,
showcasing Chris' skills on double bass, keyboard/synth, guitar and
melodica, as well as other random instruments. with help from some of
his Blood and Bone Orchestra band-mates, Jim Colby, Ed Downey and
Darren DeWisperlaere, Chris lays down 8 perfectly crafted pieces (28+
min) ranging from abstract drone/textural scapes, melodic
instrumentals, to outsider keyboard/sampling/bass/sax improv, and
finally rounding things out with a angular rock gem. [packaged in a
kraft Arigato folded sleeve with 2 color artwork by Chris and
silkscreened by Alex Schmidt] (Chris also plays in Blood and Bone
Orchestra, The Years, Ada le O, Entente Cordiale, Crush the Junta,
and a couple other offshoots)

collaboration releases, Nôh/No split, Brian Blatt, Nôh, SQ, Stone
Baby, Edward Ruchalski, Andy Gilmore, Joe+N, Hilkka (really?),

New Releases since 7/13/2007 (12 items)
======================================

Ben Reynolds - hips 'n moons (CDR) - Gold Soundz $8.00
"Great new album by new favorite Ben Reynolds. He uses guitar,
synths, loops and voice to create magic worlds of drones, but then
again so much more. Especially the center piece "Blood though
heavens" is a masterpiece of stellar minimalism rarely heard these
days.."

Black Sparrow - once i'm under a person's skin, i'm like a splinter
(CDR) - Gold Soundz $8.00
"Very well executed intimate drones from Mr. Sparrow, who also runs
the wonderful Curor recordings label out of Brighton, England. He
manages to pull off the jagged, tactile sound in his drones, not too
unlike, say, Jazzfinger.. And this is always a plus in my book (yes,
I have a book..)"

Chora - runt page (CDR) - Gold Soundz $8.00
"Very good weird free psych stuff from the now London-based stepsons
of Sheffield. Hard to describe, but there's drums, there's some horn
playing, there's twisted crunchy sounds, somehow they're reminding me
of Black Dice. Not entirely similar sounding, but the same kinda
feeling. Somewhere between Animal Collective and Vibracathedral
Orchestra, perhaps?"

Crush the Junta - the curse of abraham (CDR) - Carbon Records $8.00
two live tracks, totally 42+ minutes. ranges from the stoner/heavy
riff-n-drive that live CTJ audiences have been experiencing, to some
more deconstructed, almost US Maple-influenced jitters. [packaged in
kraft chip-board envelope with full color artwork affixed and dual-

Crush the Junta - hanging design (TSHIRT) - Carbon Records $10.00
the Crush the Junta "hanging" design. brick red shirt with gray and
white ink and wrap-around design.

Crush the Junta - hanging design (TSHIRT) - Carbon Records $10.00
the Crush the Junta "hanging" design. muted blue shirt with gray and
white ink and wrap-around design.

Joe McPhee - Soprano (LP) - roaratorio $16.00
"A document of Joe McPhee's first solo concert devoted exclusively to
the straight horn, Soprano is both a companion volume to his previous
LP for Roaratorio (the critically lauded Everything Happens For A
Reason) and a follow up to his classic album Tenor, which raised the
bar for solo saxophone music over 30 years ago. Recorded live in St.
George's Church at the Guelph Jazz Festival in 1998, Soprano was
inspired by Pauline Oliveros' Deep Listening performance at the venue
the previous year. The acoustics of the church provided a natural web
of reverberation and delay, and compose as much a part of the sonic
palette as Michael Overhage's farmhouse did for Tenor. McPhee's art
is informed by the head and the heart in equal measures, and Soprano
is thoughtful, passionate music from one of jazz's most eloquent
practitioners. A limited edition of 553 copies on 180 gram vinyl,
with a Judith Lindbloom silkscreen print on rice paper and liner
notes by McPhee and Oliveros."

Paper Legs - Three by Three (3CD) - Heat Retention Records $8.00
THIS IS 3X 3" CDRs. .

Shelf Life - Ductworks (CD) - public eyesore $10.00
(ITDE) “Ductworks” finds Public Eyesore Records honcho Bryan Day with
collaborators Alex Boardman, Joseph Jaros, and Jay Schleidt; working
in a truly egalitarian manner to fashion an effortlessly unruffled
recording. Unfortunately, the somewhat calm nature of the disc may
turn off casual listeners. Pay attention, you suckers– it is for
exactly this quality that I can declare “Ductworks” a real success.
Let’s face it, improvisational music sometimes hits a few ‘behavioral
lock grooves,’ where its an open secret that what is occurring sounds
like improv, but is really a re-hash of What Worked Before. Even the
overall tone of a performance can fall prey to this sort of
repetition– proceeding from quiet to loud everytime, working to
create a “dark” sound time and time again… it’s cheating the improv
spirit, and it is my opinion that this makes it even more difficult
to appreciate some real improv when you come across it. Of course,
I’m thinking of “Ductworks” as I write this. No,
it doesn’t seem to have an overarching theme. No, it’s not a showy
display of dramatic guitar runs or sax blowing. So why listen? For
starters, check how fully these musicians explore their instruments!
I’m not sure of everything that’s being played, but I can assure you
that whatever it is, it’s being squeezed for the last drop of sound
available! It’s also very enjoyable to hear such a ‘real’ album–
listeners will easily be able to place themselves within the
performance, which is strikingly immediate without being at all in
your face. Recommended. - DaveX
