New Releases since 8/8/2007 (25 items)
======================================

6Majik9 - Rubber God Head (CDR) - Phantom Limb $8.50
"From the musical collective broadcasting Terracid, Brothers of the
Occult Sisterhood, and other celestial craziness comes the majikal
sounds of 6Majik9. Channelling Coltrane through a cracked mirror
image of the No-Neck Blues Band, the music of "Rubber God Head' is a
new form of world music, a world of not just distance and space, but
of time and past and future. Take the lysergic rollercoaster ride on
this monumental track and keep a look out for their work on many
other labels this summer and beyond."

A.M. - Orla (CD) - Ikuisuus $15.00
One day in early 2004 I arrived home to find the biggest parcel I had
ever received sitting on my doorstep, it was crudely wrapped and
covered in stamps. I was amazed that anyone would POST something like
this through the regular mail system. I brought it inside and cut
away the packaging. To my astonishment I found that it contained a
large old 'Orla' chord organ and a letter from Marcel Bear
(Empirical) saying that he had noted my recent enthusiasm for organ
tones (see also With Throats As Fine As Needles and Sunken...). He
had found this one at a garage sale and thought that I might like it.
My interest in organs had been at least in part inspired by my
reading about Charlemagne Palestine and his concept of the "Golden
Music". His idea of a stream of sound that may facilitate an ecstatic
bliss of religious intensity has been hugely influential to me (in
much the same way as Haino's 'sound of the universe'...). I decided
pretty much straight away that I would record an albu
m using this organ as the predominant sound source (the only other
sound sources are the field recordings of rain on the 1st track and
scaffolding pipes on the 2nd). As the recordings progressed from the
straight ahead drone of the 1st track I stripped away more and more
unnecessary components of the machine until on the last track I was
bowing and plucking the spring pegs of the keys. One of my favourite
sounds was that of the fan motor itself.

Ashtray Navigations - Four More Raga Moods (CD) - Ikuisuus $15.00
"Mmmm my mouth is watering at the prospect of listening to this with
one look at the various underground luminaries involved: Ben
Reynolds, Pete Nolan, Andy Jarvis, Alex Neilson, Chris Hladowski
(Nalle / Scatter), Mel Delaney and of course Phil Todd. Do I really
need to write anymore?! The album opens with its only raga, an
acoustic duet from Reynolds and Jarvis, heavily warped by analogue
delay. "Hey Sunflower Motherfucker" has Todd's sun-seeking guitar
working its way through thick waves of wow. "The Pete Nolan Effect"
is a deep pool of drone (once the microphone returns from its wind-
blasted trip outside!) as is the immensely atmospheric final track
which sounds like the inners of a dank, dark cave." - Boa Melody Ba

Ben Reynolds - Music is the Music Language (CD) - Ikuisuus $12.00
In the Spring months of 2005 Ben Reynolds began taking yet more jabs
from mankind’s collective unconscious and turning them into sounds
that love being in your ears. They have since been collected under
the title ‘Music Is The Music Language’ and kindly unleashed by new
Finnish label Ikuisuus. This is the first CD release from Ben after a
torrent of CDRs bearing his name came flowing from various corners of
the globe throughout 2004/2005. The sounds contained within the
present release were moulded with less care but an equal if not
greater amount of love as previous creations; The age old fight
between the human controlling impulse and the natural (non) laws of
chance ceased momentarily and a brief collaboration between the
usually warring factions ensued. The results were welcomed by the
overseer of this collaboration as a job well done and has since
continued to pursue methods of creation whereby this fight will be
done with once and for all. As for how all this sounds, th
at’s for your ears to decide

Bjerga / Iversen - Electron (CASS) - Blackest Rainbow $6.00
"Norwegian drone duo with releases on Gold Soundz, Time Lag and Barl
Fire to name a few... This is a pretty intense live recording that is
more of a layered dense noise soundscape than drone. Two sides
totally in at about 27 minutes. Edition of only 50 cassette. Sprayed
cassettes and cases with handnumbered insert. "

Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood - goodbye (CD) - Digitalis
Industries $12.00
"As far as the Southern Hemisphere goes, Australia's budding
underground has often played second fiddle to that of it's island
neighbor, New Zealand. But a new crop of Aussies is levelling the
playing field. Leading the way is the brother/sister duo of Michael
and Kristina Donnelly AKA Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood. These
cosmic travelers are soaked to the bone in dust, like relics from the
past. They speak only in tongues and send out shortwave psychedelic
radio transmissions into the bleeding edges of drugged-out folk
sludge. BOTOS' organic compositions are familiar to many by now.
After a string of CD-R releases on Time-Lag, Celebrate Psi-
Phenomenon, and others, this is their first pro-pressed offering.
Building on transcendent themes and saturating everything in an all-
encompassing puff of bong smoke. Endless walls of instrumentation
create artificial bounderies that the Donnellys destroy with far-
reaching, hypnotic drones. By the time"Goodbye" comes to a grinding hal
t, it feels like the stuff of legend. Brothers of the Occult
Sisterhood are only interested in blowing your skull to smithereens
while cradling you in their arms. They are simply magnificent, and
there aren't many doing it better these days. The first 500 copies
come in silkscreened sleeves done by the New Zealand arthouse/
imprint, United Fairy Moons."

Carbonic - Forest Creatures (CDR) - Ghost Woods Records $7.00
"Carbonic is Benoit Guerroué, who spent most of his life in Brittany,
France, but moved in 2003 to the US, to Rochester, NY. ‘Forest
Creatures’ is already his 8th album. The style on the 12 songs with
improvisations are a mixture of simple, recognisable, natural (say
also : as if living in the woods and thus creating its mood) dreamy
moody psychfolk excursions and instrumentals build around a basic
collection of songs (vocals, vocal harmonies, harmonica, acoustic
strummed guitar, flutes, harmonium, hand percussion, and a few other
instruments like piano,..) giving the impression they celebrate the
quietness of a life near or in a house in the woods, perhaps dealing
with cold now and then but always surrounded by something which is
beautiful, because it gives an inner condition that makes us more
peaceful inside, in a natural way. Besides, there still is the human
person who has to deal with his own ghosts and realities with the
surrounding real persons. So in this case, Benoi
t also sings, more clearly, about that, as a human being, finding his
own place within this space, while the forest cures most easily most
of the spinning thoughts. Although most of it is recorded on his own
(?), more than once, the songs sound as if performed by a duo/trio,
even by two vocalists (with some cello on two tracks by Ian Downey).
Makes for a rewarding repeated listen, from start to finish." -
PSYCHEDELIC & ACID FOLK MUSIC

Carbonic - Dance of Dirt / Dirt I Became (2CDR) - Ghost Woods Records
$12.00
"Sprawling, orchestral, epic, Dirt unveils Guerroué's golden touch as
an arranger, recordist, and mixer. " - CITY Newspaper (Rochester, NY)

"I have not yet revealed the complete mysteries behind the
inspirations on this new double release of Carbonic. I can only look
at the few black and white illustrations in the booklet, hum quietly
and say that it just sounds like an intuitive concept in two big
sections, like two parts of a story book, but I need to listen a few
more times to feel the depths slip deeper with each listen into my
senses, a growing experience which the release is able to provide .
The first CD is arranged with acoustic guitar, some cello, and a bit
of colourful percussion, flute, keyboards, and is the song part. The
intuitive emotionality is much more focused and also more expressive
and varied compared to most comparable releases with this kind of
inspiration, and this shows already a great deal of quality from the
expressions. The arrangements are nice and with respect given to
expressiveness, and melodic fluency. There’s enough variety in these
songs to keep me listening attentively. The albu
m builds up to a dramatic ending, with colourful handclap-like
rhythms and some distorted electric guitar freak-out, adapting also
tiny fragments of what sounds like Bulgarian voices, harmony vocals.
The second album is mostly instrumental and explores this part
mostly, from ritual-focused to freak folk experimental with odd
chords here and there, or keyboards-inspired, with more use of
colourful percussion and a few more instruments, like electronic
keyboards, and organ." - PSYCHEDELIC & ACID FOLK MUSIC

Changeling - Five Hundred Nights (CDR) - Phantom Limb $8.00
"Recorded at the lavish Phantom Limb Recording studios, aka my house,
this new cd-r from Los Angeles' premier composer of blissed out loops
sounds like it was transmitted directly through time and space from
Kevin Shield's brain while recording "Loveless". Lush and yet
desolate, this is the best work of Changeling so far, and it only
promises to get better. Two massive guitar and keyboard compositions,
flying high above the ground, casting shadows on our hearts."

ELEKTRONAVN - Songs of Impermanence (CDR) - Ikuisuus $8.00
The Music is composed, played and produced by Magnus Olsen Majmon
2007. Instruments : Vocal, clarinet, zurna, violin, (bowed) guitar,
bells, organ, bansuri flute, bass drum, feng gong, field recordings,
blues harp and more. First issued by Empty Sounds Rec. Reissue by
Ikuisuus summer 2007. "More instrumental goodness dripping inwardly
from the Danes, specifically Elektronavn who is Magnus Olsen Majmon,
one of my personal favourite CDR-releasing, one-man band, geniuses of
the drone, and a fellow who also has a convincing line in subtle
electro-acoustic juxtapositions. While I’m still waiting to hear
anything that delivers the depth and atmospheric richness of his 2004
CDR Rationale Mystique, this newie SongsofImpermanence (EMPTY SOUNDS
REC ESR 008) promises a profound meditation on the great
imponderables such as death, futility, loss and despair. Besides
playing a ton and a half of reed instruments, strings, percussion and
keyboards, Magnus also sings on this short half-hour
record - a new side to his accomplishments with which I am yet to
familiarise myself. Opening seconds alone were enough to persuade me
he’s created a brace of gold-lined azure-enriched canvases in sound,
fit to illuminate the darkest corners of these mighty abstractions of
human misery that are his chosen themes. Hand-made cover has been
produced using a raw, primitive version of the ‘decalcomania’ method,
which in the hands of Max Ernst was used to create gigantic forests
of post-war, angst-drenched doubt and lip-biting despair. In hands of
Majmon, same technique produces little more than shapeless green
blobs. No matter, because even if his painterly talents are slight,
his musical gifts are beyond cavil." -Ed Pinsent. The Sound Projector
www june 2007

Family Underground - Salt of the Sun (CD) - Ikuisuus $15.00
"New minimal full-length album from Family Underground that abandons
the drug-hit-sally-inside feel of early Velvets jags for the sound of
the last gasp of Lou Reed's long-suffering amp in the final seconds
of 'Black Angel's Death Song' extended to oblivion. Comes in a fold-
out four panel digipak." - Volcanic Tongue "An oozing sprawl of
malevolent drone and thick buzzing electricity from Denmark's Family
Underground." - Boa Melody Bar

Fantastic Ego - the river is down (3inch CDR) - Phantom Limb $5.00

Gareth Hardwick - Sunday Afternoon (CDR) - Blackest Rainbow $8.00
"Gareth is from Nottingham and uses his guitar to make slow building
guitar drone... kinda reminds me of Growing or Stars of the Lid. This
is one 30 minute lapsteel improvisation. Gareth also runs Low Point
which has released numerous releases under his own names as well as
stuff from Jazzfinger, Felix, Chris Watson, Bologna Pony, Stuckometer
and more. "

Loren Connors - The Hymn of the North Star (LP) - Family Vineyard $15.50
"Even before his 1978 debut guitarist Loren Connors has been
continually redefining the American blues and folk guitar. The Hymn
of the North Star, a 180 gram 500 edition LP, is the first full-
length vinyl release solely under Connors' name since 1990. Though in
the years since he has recorded over two dozen solo and collaborative
albums with Jim O'Rourke, John Fahey, Alan Licht, Christina Carter,
Jandek, Suzanne Langille, Thurston Moore, Keiji Haino, Darin Gray,
and others. Connors creates a tapestry of transparent and haunting
melodies that transform the Delta blues into a ghost-like apparition
that never settles as it pours from the soul. These six pieces show
Connors contemporary elegiac style at its peak of romantic
minimalism. Self recorded in his Brooklyn apartment The Hymn of the
North Star is saturated with subtle details and the barely there
multi-tracks of guitar and bass floating in the background. Guitarist
Alan Licht appears on one equally opaque piece recorded
in Glasgow, Scotland." [cover photo by (Carbon) Joe Tunis]

N?h - s/t (3inch CDR) - Carbon Records $6.00
duo of Larry J Patti (Foot and Mouth Disease) and Joe Tunis (Joe+N,
Crush the Junta, Entente Cordiale, former-Pengo, etc), doing analog
and electronic heavy/deep synth. [3" CDR housed in a LP cover,
sprayed and stenciled. limited to 50 copies!]

Paper Legs - Three by Three (3CD) - Heat Retention Records $8.00
THIS IS 3X 3" CDRs. .

PBK - Life-Sense Revoked (CD) - Lunhare $12.00
"The link between ambient and noise. Abstract turntable experiments,
ambient textures, noise and song-form structures. Some tracks feature
collaborations with AMK, Hands To, Brian Ladd, Deaf Lions, and Jarboe."

Peter Wright - desolation beauty violence (CD) - Ikuisuus $12.00
Born in New Zealand, currently residing in London England, Peter
Wright has spent the past decade or more producing limited release
recordings of drift-guitar space walks of mesmerising beauty.
Desolation Beauty Violence is his third CD release proper, after
Distant Bombs (Last Visible Dog, 2004), and Yellow Horizon
(Pseudoarcana, 2005). Recorded in London, spring 2003 along with
Yellow Horizon, Desolation Beauty Violence is a very personal take on
environment and landscape. Peter Wright uses a 12 string guitar and a
handful of effects to illustrate an instrumental journey through the
human detritus of city living juxtaposed with a wistful remembrance
of pastural isolation, it's author torn between a desire to be part
of a larger community and a need for space and solitude. Far from
being just another drone record, Desolation Beauty Violence is a
dichotomy of musical visions that are at once both blissfully
dreamlike and expressively manic.

PIUME E SANGUE presenta il DUO PORTUGAL - Nel ventre della balena
(CD) - Lunhare $12.00
"PIUME E SANGUE disguised as DUO PORTUGAL in two longtracks of
bizzare interpretation of contemporary music."

Quetzolcoatl - Sleeping within the Sun (CDR) - Phantom Limb $8.00
"Easily one of the hardest working young artists in the free-form
music world today, Tim Hurley, aka Quetzolcoatl, has been releasing
his sonic bliss like a hundred flowers blooming. Luckily, he stopped
by our garden and gave us this collection of works, a cosmic swirl of
keyboard pulses and vocal loops. Guaranteed to make you nod out and
then undergo some powerfully transformative dreaming." ALMOST GONE at
the source

Robedoor and Pocahaunted - Mouth of Prayer/Bright Sea of Singing
Bowls (CDR) - Blackest Rainbow $8.00
"I get asked for this loads, so we decided to reissue it, but rather
than a bog standard reissue, this comes with a brand new extra track
continuing in a similar vein Mouth of Prayer. For people that don't
know, this was the first collaboration between Robedoor and
Pocahaunted, they have a disc soon on Digitalis and they just did the
collaboration live at a pretty big Sonic Youth show last week."

Spool Ensemble - three electronics (3inch CDR) - Heat Retention
Records $5.00
comes in a slim dvd case

Stone Baby - Broken Wings and Bandages (CDR) - Phantom Limb $8.00
"A massive follow-up to an already stunning House of Alchemy cd-r,
upstate New York's finest chamber noise ensemble returns with a
harrowing audio document. Cutting their teeth on live shows and
changing up their instrumentation for each track, this is the most
diverse Stone Baby release to date, bringing to mind their peers;
Grouper, Loren Chasse, and Birchville Cat Motel."

Taurpis Tula - Cadillac Sitting Like a Ton of Lead (LP) - Ikuisuus
$16.00
"Cadillac Sitting Like A Ton Of Lead, the brand new album from the
Taurpis Tula trio of David Keenan (Tight Meat Duo), Heather Leigh
(Scorces/Dream Aktion Unit/Jandek) and Alex Neilson (Tight Meat Duo/
Directing Hand/Jandek/Richard Youngs et al), represents the absolute
apex of their twin guitar/drums incarnation, with two side-long
improvised psychedelic blues that combine the kind of epic string-
muscle of Fushitsusha, Ohkami No Jikan, Kousokuya and Rallizes
Denudes with a sublime avant-garage sensibility and massive pockets
of time-killing freedom. Further amplifying the malevolent narcosis
of their debut LP on Eclipse, Cadillac… is a full blown rock record
that full delivers on their vision of Yoko jamming with Red
Transistor in a world where the conventional middle-brow ‘canon’ is
pretty much upended in favour of primitive avant garde brut. There
are grooves here that are as magnetic and future-visioned as The
Magic Band circa “Big Eyed Beans From Venus” or the final secon
ds of amplifier meltdown on Mainliner’s Mellow Out while the playing
is at an all-time ESP-channelled high, with the group generating
glorious metal-inflected simultaneities without the slightest whiff
of ‘dialogue’ or even listening with ears. This is a profound
statement of the kind of freak-out freedoms inherent in the most
primal blues/rock forms and a revitalising connection to the source
of *it*, further building on the kind of form the group were packing
during their monstrous jam at Thurston Moore’s Nightmare Before
Christmas. Features Heather Leigh on vocals, harmonica and pedal
steel, David Keenan on electric guitar and Alex Neilson on drums.
Packaged in individually silkscreened sleeves by disobedient Belgian
artist Jelle Crama and featuring all-original artwork by Heather
Leigh on the front, the insert and the labels, Cadillac Sitting Like
A Ton Of Lead comes in a limited edition of 440 copies." - Douglas
Gully.
