Dear Drumming Community:
Yesterday I found out about the passing of a valued member of the Puget Sound
drum community. He is Sebastian Degen, the owner of Sawatch Drums. Sebastian
died on July 2nd in Bellingham, where he lived, and the details are not clear.
He was 47 years old.
For many years I've used Sebastian's beautiful hand-made string-tuned congas in
my classes. So many of my students admired his drums and ended up purchasing
them that he made some drums just for me and even burned my name into one of
them.
With his lovely wife Beatrice, a jewelry maker, Sebastian was a regular vendor
at many Northwest fairs and festivals, including Bumbershoot, Folklife, the
Bellevue Art Fair, and the Oregon Country Fair.
He was a sweet, gentle, happy and generous man, and a wonderful drummer, and we
will miss him dearly.
If you'd like, you can leave a message for his family at:
