I am surprised more are not commenting and using play.it, which is also owned by
CBS. After really working with it, I find it rather similar to Launchcast, and
in fact offers a greater deal of control than the LC algorithm did. Thus I do
not understand why this was not promoted or modified as a replacement for the
Launchcast stations.
Here is how it works: You have a target where you can place items closer to if
you want them to play more. This would be analagous to the old LC rating
system. Now there is only space for maybe 36 items on the screen. But you can
use folders to arrange the music more. And folders within folders. You can
also choose equal weight and the setting for music discovery.
Here is what I have done: I have taken a list of classic rock tracks and
created a folder (or sometimes two) for each year. Choosing equal weight and
adventurousness to 'the hits'. I was able to find nearly every track I was
looking for in their catalog (sometimes you have to pick from obscure
compilations but they are there). If you choose enough different artists and
tracks, you get a station that plays nearly all music you selected. 58
different artists and 187 different tracks added so far from 1964-1971. You
couldn't do that with Launchcast. (Well you could several years ago before they
changed the algorithm). I think there is potential to modify this product to
replace the old Launchcast.

No the ads really don't drive me nuts. I think if there were more real ads it
would bother me more as most just seem to be promos for other CBS stations. I
actually like the feature-ettes. I do not understand why CBS does not promote
this more, or promote this as a viable alternative for former Launchcast
subscribers, instead of forcing canned stations down our throats over which we
have no control over the content whatsoever.
Does anyone from Yahoo even read this group anymore? Or was a new one started
to discuss the new Yahoo radio??
For the kind of music you listen to; play.it might not be a good choice. I like
that I am able to control exactly what I will hear and what I will not. I
always wished Launchcast would have given us that capability within their
ratings scheme.
Never tried gotradio.com but since it costs for the customization features
probably will not.

I still read this board every week or two. Unfortunately my comments get modded
out more often than not, and so I find it hard to contribute to the
conversation.
But I check in to see if anyone's found anything new worth trying. I'm using
Pandora now, but getting extremely tired of the repetition. I've got hundreds of
seeds and thumbed-up songs, but I hear certain songs 2 or 3 times a day and it's
driving me nuts.

I totally agree that Pandora is very repetitious. I tried MeeMix which looked
promising. It has a -6 to 0 to +6 scale, but it doesn't seem to really follow
your ratings too well. I've been listening to Jango lately. It has "don't play",
"like it", & "love it". It has produced the most enjoyable station for me, so
that's what I'm using for now.
To minimize repetition, you "need" (may find it helpful) to work with the
stations! At first, I heard way too much Sam Cooke, though I thought I'd never
hear myself say that ... just keep tooling with the stations. I do not undergo
excessive repetition at Pandora anymore ... where apparently, HOPE is still in
the box!

You say that you no longer get excess repetition with Pandora. Is that because
they re-jiggered their system, or did you remove a lot of "thumbs-up"
designations for songs?
I had started finding that my Pandora stations were playing me nearly
exclusively songs that I had thumbs-up'd. I then started removing most of those
designations so that I could get more variety.
If it's safe to thumbs-up songs again, I may tread back into those waters...

jivajiva - you say you're getting less repetition on Pandora now. Have they
changed something, or did you remove a lot of "thumbs-up" designations on songs?
I was finding that Pandora played me almost exclusively songs that I'd
thumbs-up'd. While I appreciated hearing music I liked already, I was jonesing
for some variety too -- so I removed a lot of the "thumbs-up" designations.
If it's safe to thumbs-up again (and still get variety), that'd be good to know!
btw, I took a look at play.it...I listen to a lot of obscure music, and play.it
just seems to be focusing on the most popular tastes at the moment. For me,
Last.fm has the best overall music variety, followed by Pandora.

I'm using it too.
But it is extremely tedious work to add music to your station,so no wonder it
wasn't advertised.
The target area can quickly get crowded, and even with folders it is difficult to
track your catalog.
I started by adding artists then noticed that adding albums and tracks really
changes the behaviour of the station.
I probably have more time than the average user to tweak things, and I think that
in some respects it is even better than my LC station was,but the organization
part of it doesn't make it userfriendly.

I keep adding stations and learning about music. I don't get much repetition,
though at first it was all (piratically Sam Cooke and Al Greene now it is "like
eclectic" :) Thumbs up if I like it no check if I don't like it, and don't
play again if it is Dianna Ross. :) Unlike old Launch Cast this no play
selection is honored. I just sent a copy of my "quick mix" url to this group.
I wonder how that will come across! :)
