STYX Concert Review
Friday, July 28, 2000
8
p.m.

What can I say? The concert was a BLAST!!! I’m writing
this the morning after. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I
have no voice left today, except for one of those
raspy “1-976” numbers from cheering all night. LOL The
traffic was terrible going to Barrie; a 2 hour drive took
a long 3 ½ hours. Having never been to Molson Place
before, we decided to check the place out first. There’s
a restaurant in the building so we thought that
would be a good place to grab food before the concert.
As I jumped from the car, I could hear Larry playing
inside; from the restaurant window I could see him
warming up. Of course, due to the concert, the restaurant
was closed and we were evicted. DARN. So, we went off
to eat. Got back to the place and parked the car
just in time to see Larry speeding away in a car.
Missed him again! Double DARN!

The concert.
Nazereth opened for STYX. It didn’t take long for the
crowd of 4000 to be just a jumpin’. After a wait that
seemed like days, STYX finally took the stage. We were
15 rows back, but on the wrong side to be close to
Larry. It was still FAB! Our fearless hero fell off his
rotating keyboard early in the show and I gasped as he
recovered without missing a beat! He then returned the
favour by knocking JY with it. You see, JY’s jumping
around caused Larry to come crashing down. I managed to
snap a few pics which I will get developed today.
(hope they turn out!) About half way through the show
Tommy stepped forward to play a couple verses of
Larry’s Criminal Mind, much to Larry’s shagrin. He stood
there with his hands on his hips looking at Tommy with
mock menace. Tommy stopped playing and said, “Do you
like this song? I wrote it myself.” He then looked
over at Larry who said, “Ok, then I guess I STOLE it.”
Then Larry flew to his keyboard and dove into song. It
was wonderful. I was taken back to 1985. Of course,
he looked a little different back then. The rest of
band joined in and presented a great rendition of the
world famous Criminal Mind. I was spellbound…and a
little star struck. I ran up to the side where a friend
of mind was and we danced up a storm for the rest of
the night. STYX wowed us with song; Brave New World,
Edge of the Century, Come Sail Away, Sweet Madame
Blue, Renegade, Blue Collar Man, Crystal Ball, Miss
America, Too Much Time on my Hands, Grand Illusion, to
mention a few.

After the concert. We waited
hopefully by the tour buses for a glimpse of the band. The
first to come out was Todd (the drummer) and we were
able to get his autograph. Then came, Glen
(vocals/bass) also stole an autograph and a short conversation.
JY (vocals/guitar) ran past us as we were talking to
Glen and boarded the bus. No autograph there. Sometime
during all this, Tommy (vocals/guitar) must have gotten
on to another bus. No autograph there either. Then
after much waiting, along came our hero, Larry Gowan
(do I really have to write what he does here? *drool
drool*). He stopped for a few words and autographs with
fans, myself included. I also got a new pic. . .soon to
be published. (hopefully, if it turns out) I think
Larry recognized me, but couldn’t remember my name. I’m
not sure if that’s a good thing or not; I hope he
doesn’t think I’m a stalker! LOL Of course, all the
things I wanted to say, completely left my tiny mind as
I stared at him, trying to remember my name. I will
have to write it down next time. Speaking of next
time, we have just purchased tickets for the STYX
concert in Hamilton in October.

Still flying high,
we stopped at Tim Horton’s for coffee and timbits to
keep us awake for the long drive home in the wee hours
of the morning.
