Hello, Sacred LDS Musicians! I just joined this Yahoo group, along with the ldschoir group. Allow me to be totally unoriginal and re-post the introduction here which I posted there on Saturday:
I’m Eric McKirdy, from Albany, Oregon. I’m an organist and conductor by trade, after studying at the U of Oregon, and I’m our stake’s music chairman and cultural arts director, as well as being my ward’s choir director and organist. When I manage to find an extra 40 hours per week lying around, I work at the Oregon Festival of American Music as an associate conductor, and I teach theory, orchestration and private lessons at the American Music Institute. I’m also active in the Eugene and Portland chapters of the American Guild of Organists, as a recitalist and workshop presenter.
But don’t let any of that fool you. I’m just your basic person, happy to make the mortgage payment every month, and with anything left over, I enjoy taking my wife [who is musical, but works in the nursing industry] out to dinner at Red Robin or Olive Garden, her two favorite eateries. We have no children at present, but we do have my cat, who is 15 but doesn’t know it, and another adolescent cat which is trying to adopt us. To date, this has been only partially successful.
I’ve written a number of arrangements and other works for my ward and stake choirs, mostly due to lack of any money to buy anything decent, and I have two commissioned works in progress for an institute choir in California.
I am anxious to come to know all of you, and I’m looking forward to learning plenty from being here.
Eric — I’d show you my web site, but I forgot to renew the domain
