GS Atone, Atonement
As used in the scriptures, to atone is to suffer the penalty for an
act of sin, thereby removing the effects of sin from the repentant
sinner and allowing him to be reconciled to God. Jesus Christ was
the only one capable of making a perfect atonement for all mankind.
He was able to do so because of his selection and foreordination in
the Grand Council before the world was formed (Ether 3: 14; Moses 4:
1-2; Abr. 3: 27), his divine Sonship, and his sinless life. His
atonement included his suffering for the sins of mankind in the
Garden of Gethsemane, the shedding of his blood, and his death and
subsequent resurrection from the grave (Isa. 53: 3-12; Mosiah 3: 5-
11; Alma 7: 10-13). Because of the Atonement, all people will rise
from the dead with immortal bodies (1 Cor. 15: 22). The Atonement
also provides the way for us to be forgiven of our sins and live
forever with God. But a person who has reached the age of
accountability and received the law can receive these blessings only
if he has faith in Jesus Christ, repents of his sins, receives the
ordinances of salvation, and obeys the commandments of God. Those
who do not reach the age of accountability and those without the law
are redeemed through the Atonement (Mosiah 15: 24-25; Moro. 8: 22).
The scriptures clearly teach that if Christ had not atoned for our
sins, no law, ordinance, or sacrifice would satisfy the demands of
justice, and man could never regain God's presence (2 Ne. 2; 9).

GS Chasten, Chastening
Despise not the chastening hand of the Almighty, Job 5: 17 (Prov. 3:
11). Blessed is the man whom thou chastens, O Lord, Ps. 94: 12. All
scripture is given for reproof, for correction, 2 Tim. 3: 16. The
Lord chastens those whom he loves, Heb. 12: 5-11. The Lord sees fit
to chasten his people, Mosiah 23: 21-22. Except the Lord chasten his
people, they will not remember him, Hel. 12: 3. The Lord did talk
with the brother of Jared, and chastened him, Ether 2: 14. They were
chastened that they might repent, D&C 1: 27. Whom I love I also
chasten that their sins may be forgiven, D&C 95: 1. All those who
will not endure chastening cannot be sanctified, D&C 101: 2-5. My
people must needs be chastened until they learn obedience, D&C 105:
6. He that will not bear chastisement is not worthy of my kingdom,

GS Forgive
As used in the scriptures, to forgive generally means one of two
things: (1) When God forgives men, he cancels or sets aside a
required punishment for sin. Through the atonement of Christ,
forgiveness of sins is available to all who repent, except those
guilty of murder or the unpardonable sin against the Holy Ghost. (2)
As people forgive each other, they treat one another with Christlike
love and have no bad feelings toward those who have offended them
(Matt. 5: 43-45; 6: 12-15; Luke 17: 3-4; 1 Ne. 7: 19-21).

GS Forgive
The Lord is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity
and transgression, Num. 14: 18. Though your sins be as scarlet, they
shall be as white as snow, Isa. 1: 18. Forgive us our debts, as we
forgive our debtors, Matt. 6: 12 (Luke 11: 4; 3 Ne. 13: 11). The Son
of man has power to forgive sins, Matt. 9: 6 (Matt. 18: 35; Mark 2:
10; Luke 5: 20-24). How oft shall my brother sin against me, and I
forgive him? Matt. 18: 21-22 (D&C 98: 40). He that blasphemes
against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, Mark 3: 29 (Alma 39:
6). If thy brother trespass against thee and repent, forgive him,
Luke 17: 3. Father forgive them, for they know not what they do,

forgiven one another your trespasses, even so I, the Lord, forgive
you, D&C 82: 1. Whom I love I also chasten that their sins may be
forgiven, D&C 95: 1. I have forgiven thee thy transgression, Moses
6: 53.

GS Justice

require of thee, but to do justly? Micah 6: 8. Jesus will be just
and forgive our sins, 1 John 1: 9. The justice of God did divide the
wicked from the righteous, 1 Ne. 15: 30. The Atonement satisfies the
demands of his justice, 2 Ne. 9: 26. All mankind is fallen and is in

claims its own, D&C 88: 40. None shall be exempted from the justice
and the laws of God, D&C 107: 84.

GS Remission of Sins
Forgiveness for wrongdoing upon condition of repentance. Remission
of sins is made possible by the atonement of Jesus Christ. A person
obtains a remission of his sins if he has faith in Christ, repents
of his sins, receives the ordinances of baptism and laying on of
hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost, and obeys God's commandments
(A of F 1: 3-4).

GS Repent, Repentance

there were a punishment, Alma 42: 16. Let your sins trouble you,
with that trouble which shall bring you down unto repentance, Alma
42: 29. Ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a
contrite spirit, 3 Ne. 9: 20. Whoso repenteth and cometh unto me as
a little child, him will I receive, 3 Ne. 9: 22. Repent, all ye ends
of the earth, 3 Ne. 27: 20. As oft as they repented, they were

to him it is sin, James 4: 17. Wilt thou make me that I may shake at

When we undertake to cover our sins, the heavens withdraw
themselves, D&C 121: 37.

GS Sons of Perdition
None of them is lost but the son of perdition, John 17: 12. It is
impossible to renew them again unto repentance, Heb. 6: 4-6 (Heb.
10: 26-29). Mercy hath no claim on that man and his final doom is
never-ending torment, Mosiah 2: 36-39. He is as though there was no
redemption made, Mosiah 16: 5. Those who deny Christ's miracles to
get gain shall become like the son of perdition, 3 Ne. 29: 7. They
will receive no forgiveness in this world or the next, D&C 76: 30-34
(D&C 84: 41; 132: 27). They are the only ones who will not be
redeemed from the second death, D&C 76: 34-48. Sons of perdition
deny the Holy Spirit after receiving it, D&C 76: 35. Sons of
perdition deny the Son after the Father has revealed him, D&C 76:
43. Cain shall be called Perdition, Moses 5: 22-26.

GS Unpardonable Sin
Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men,
Matt. 12: 31-32 (Mark 3: 29; Luke 12: 10). It is impossible for
those who were made partakers of the Holy Ghost to renew them again
unto repentance, Heb. 6: 4-6. If we sin wilfully after we have
received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more
sacrifice for sins, Heb. 10: 26. If ye deny the Holy Ghost and know
that ye deny it, this is a sin which is unpardonable, Alma 39: 5-6
(Jacob 7: 19). They have no forgiveness, having denied the Only
Begotten Son, having crucified him unto themselves, D&C 76: 30-35.
The blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven, which is
shedding innocent blood after ye have received my new and
everlasting covenant, D&C 132: 26-27.

BD Confession
The scriptures use confession in at least two ways. One is to
confess that Jesus is the Christ; that is, a confession or
profession of faith; see, for example, Matt. 10: 32; Matt. 16: 16;
John 6: 68-69; John 12: 42; Rom. 10: 9; Philip. 2: 11; 1 Tim. 6: 12;
Heb. 4: 14; 1 Jn. 4: 2. A second usage of confession is confession
of sin. It is a duty of all persons to confess all their sins to the
Lord and, when necessary, to the person or persons sinned against.
Sins against the public must be publicly confessed (D&C 42: 88-93).
Other items may be confessed to a church official (bishop), or in
many cases to the Lord alone. Confession to a church official (in
most cases the bishop) is necessary whenever one's transgression is
of a nature for which the Church might impose loss of membership or
other disciplinary action. The bishop cannot and does not forgive
sin, but he may judge the matter and waive the penalty that the
Church might otherwise impose against the person. The repentant
sinner must still make confession and obtain forgiveness of the
Lord.=Confession is a condition of forgiveness. The Lord has said
that true repentance is always accompanied by confession (D&C 58:
43; D&C 64: 7). Confession was clearly a requirement of forgiveness
under the law of Moses (Lev. 5: 5; Lev. 26: 40; Num. 5: 7; Josh. 7:
19; Ezra 10: 11). John the Baptist baptized those who repented and
confessed their sins (Matt. 3: 5-6).

BD Zechariah
Son of Berechiah, son of Iddo (Neh. 12: 4, 16); a contemporary of
Haggai (Ezra 5: 1; Ezra 6: 14); prophesied from 2nd to 4th year of
Darius I (520-518 B.C.) The book of Zechariah has two divisions:
chs. 1 - 8, a series of visions sketching the future of the people
of God, and chs. 9 -14, prophecies of an obscure kind, belong to a
different situation. The Visions: Zech. 1: 1-6, introduction:
warning to hear and repent, by the example of the fathers, who
refused to hear and were overtaken by God's judgments, justly, as
they acknowledged. Zech. 1: 7-17, first vision, riders on horses of
various colors, which go over all the earth to report on the state
of the nation in the interests of Jerusalem. Zech. 1: 18-21, second
vision, four horns - all the agencies that have scattered Israel;
and four craftsmen - the divine agencies that shall counteract and
destroy them. Ch. 2, third vision, a man with a measuring line to
measure Jerusalem. The city shall be immeasurable and overflow with
people. Ch. 3, fourth vision, Joshua, the high priest, in filthy
garments, standing before the angel of the Lord, with Satan at his
right hand to accuse him (cf. Job 1: 6-11). Satan is rebuked; the
Lord who has chosen Jerusalem has plucked the brand from the
burning. The beautiful vision might be a reflection of the feeling
of the people, their abject condition awakening a sense of their
sin, and the fear that the Lord had not returned to them in truth.
They are comforted with the assurance that his favor and forgiveness
are with them, dispensed through the ministries among them; these
ministries are but types of a more perfect one, when through the
Branch (Messiah, Jer. 23: 5; Jer. 33: 15) the Lord will remove the
iniquity of the land in one day. Ch. 4, fifth vision, a lampstand
surmounted by a bowl of oil, which feeds by tubes the seven burning
lamps of the lampstand, two olive trees on either side supplying the
bowl with oil. The lamps might represent the light shed by the
people or that shed among them. The oil is the symbol of the Spirit,
through whom, and not by might or power, all Israel's work and
destiny shall be accomplished. This Spirit is dispensed through the
two anointed ones ("sons of oil"), representing the priestly and
royal rule (Joshua and Zerubbabel). Zech. 5: 1-4, sixth vision, a
symbol of the curse that shall light on sin in the land. Zech. 5: 5-
11, seventh vision, symbol of the removing of the sin of the people
to Shinar, the land of their foes (Lev. 16: 21). Zech. 6: 1-8,
eighth vision, horsemen, called also winds (Rev. 7: 1), going to all
quarters of the earth - symbols of agencies by which God shall
subdue the nations, foes of his people. Zech. 6: 9-15, symbolical
action to teach that the Branch (Messiah), who shall truly build the
temple of the Lord, shall be a Crowned Priest. Chs. 7 and 8 reply to
a question about fasting: the Lord is indifferent whether men fast
or eat; he desires that they execute judgment and show mercy (Zech.
7: 8-10). The fasts shall be turned into festivals of joy (Zech. 8:
19). Chs. 1 - 8 are full of profoundly spiritual teaching.

JST Mark 3: 21-25
22 But he answered them and said, Verily I say unto you, All sins
which men have committed, when they repent, shall be forgiven them;
for I came to preach repentance unto the sons of men.

JST Luke 12: 9-12
12 Whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man, and
repenteth, it shall be forgiven him; but unto him who blasphemeth
against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him.
