Great to know a new fan. Lena was born in 1917. On June 30th she will be 88. She
was married twice. First to Lois Jones from 1937 - 1944. He was the father of
her two children Gail (1937) and Teddy (1940). She was married to musician Lenny
Hayton from 1947 - 1941. He was a musician at MGM while Lena was under contract
there, and was the musical director for some famous films such as Singing in the
Rain. Gail is an a well known author today. Teddy died of kidney failure in the
1970s. Lena had a frustrating hollywood career due to racism. But she had an
amazing career in music, first touring as one of the highest paid cabaret
performers of her time, later as a recording artist, and peaking with the
longest running one-woman show in broadway history. It ran some 13 months
starting in 1981 around Lena's 65th birthday. She then toured the show around
the world until she was 68 or 69. She continued recording until around 2000.
Some of her later recordings are my favorite. Have you listened to much of her
music?
