A great start for CD's to experience the evolution of Ms. Horne would
be:
Lena Horne - Stormy Weather (Bluebird)
Lena Horne - Love Songs
Lena Horne - The Lady and Her Music - Live on Broadway
Lena Horne - Being Myself
There are two authorized biographies that are of interest:
Lena by Richard Schickel. I believe she collaborated and it covers her
early life up to around the early 60's
Lena Horneby James S Haskins. I believe she authorized it but did not
collaborate. It covers her life up to the early 80's and her Broadway
show.
Watch eBay or DVD or videos. Most are out of print but are offered there
from time to time - mostly older stuff from television variety show
appearances. The Lady and Her Music Live on Broadway was released on
VHS and is a must have if you can find it. Also at the age of 77 a great
performance was videotaped live titled, Lena Horne, Live at the NY
Supper Club. I love that one.

Subject: [Lena Horne] Re: LENA!
I was wondering what she was doing now. I saw a clip of her on
TVLand singing that was about 30 years ago and it stood up to Word
and Music made in 1949. On the music, I once heard the double album
Lena and her Music and I recently heard some very old recordings off
a cd I can't remember the name. Lena's singing always impressed me
because she is so strong. Lena steals the show. Do you recommend
any CDs, DVDs or books or magazines?

> Great to know a new fan. Lena was born in 1917. On June 30th she
will be 88. She was married twice. First to Lois Jones from 1937 -
1944. He was the father of her two children Gail (1937) and Teddy
(1940). She was married to musician Lenny Hayton from 1947 - 1941.
He was a musician at MGM while Lena was under contract there, and
was the musical director for some famous films such as Singing in
the Rain. Gail is an a well known author today. Teddy died of kidney
failure in the 1970s. Lena had a frustrating hollywood career due to
racism. But she had an amazing career in music, first touring as one
of the highest paid cabaret performers of her time, later as a
recording artist, and peaking with the longest running one-woman
show in broadway history. It ran some 13 months starting in 1981
around Lena's 65th birthday. She then toured the show around the
world until she was 68 or 69. She continued recording until around
2000. Some of her later recordings are my favorite. Have you
listened to much of her music?
