Some of you may be aware of this, but in case you're not, the Australian import
label Raven has seen fit to release Linda's first two solo albums (HAND SOWN,
HOME GROWN; SILK PURSE) on one CD...and with an added bonus. The long-lost minor
1971 hit "She's A Very Lovely Woman" has finally made it onto CD after almost
thirty-nine years of obscurity.

I don't know how many here have heard of her, but in a recent Nashville Scene
article (August 19, 2009), alternative-country artist Caitlin Rose (whose mother
Liz co-wrote half of Taylor Swift's first album) had some great things to say
about Our Girl:

"To be a singer is a really important thing. Take Linda Ronstadt. The thing
about her is that she was a phenomenal singer from the beginning. She was
untrained and she didn't really know how to take care of her voice, but the
thing she did as a singer was develop an entire artistry around it. She chose
songs. She made J.D. Souther famous. She made a lot of people famous by having a
sensibility of what songs were good. She had a feeling for these songs. I read
her interviews all the time, and she has more music knowledge in her head than
any VH1 special ever. There's something to be said for someone who takes singing
as a craft."

It might seem like a lot of stuff you've heard before about Linda from her
peers...except that Caitlin happens to be only 22(!), and she does have a
natural feel for the distant past (which with respect to Linda would be the
early-to-middle 1970s), which shows just how wordly and scholarly this
"young'un" is.

Nashville Scene article in its entirety (August 19, 2009):
http://www.nashvillescene.com/2009-08-20/news/wild-ones-three-hot-acts-present-a\
-new-breed-of-female-songwriter/1

A picture of Caitlin can be found in "Linda's Fans In The Music Business" photo
album in the Photos section.

And here's Caitlin performing "Love Has No Pride" at Nashville's Mercy Lounge on
July 13, 2009:

This is semi-OT, but it bears posting, because, in light of her second
collaborative album of covers with Matthew Sweet coming out, former Bangles lead
singer Susanna Hoffs says a lot of great things about Our Girl:

Readers won't be scandalized or even surprised by Bego's ( Aretha
Franklin ) "unauthorized biography" of the pop singer extraordinaire.
The author is obviously a big fan of Ronstadt's, and his biography
intersperses the facts of her life with effusive praise of her musical
accomplishments. Bego takes us from Ronstadt's childhood in Tucson,
Ariz., where she first became "mesmerized by music," through the
mid-1960s in Los Angeles as the lead singer for the Stone Poneys, her
superstar period as "the most successful female singer of the 1970s,"
and her forays into opera, jazz and mariachi music during the last
decade. Along the way, we learn, rather sketchily, about Ronstadt's
affairs with singer J. D. Souther, actor Albert Brooks, former
California governor Jerry Brown and filmmaker George Lucas, among
others. Bego relies on past interviews from a multitude of magazines and
newspapers, and although he has done a capable job of pasting together
quotes from various sources to create a coherent chronology, rarely does
he attempt to probe beneath the surface of Ronstadt's California cool.

100% agree with you, Erik. It's great to see Linda is still performing
and looking happy and healthy. "Who could ask for anything more?"

I imagine she is still sounding just as wonderful as ever?

amazing tribute to the music of her father finally comes to DVD. Not
only is the show visually dazzling; but her voice couldn't be more

captured on film. You have never seen a show like this before!
In reading reviews about Linda Ronstadt's work I am always surprised
when people try to lock her into one era or style. Nowadays when its
said a recording artist has reinvented themself.. it usually means they
have colored their hair or changed their clothing.
With Linda Ronstadt you hear not only her talent but her attention to
style and detail. Her phrasing and delivery are so authentic you would
think she was from another time or place. What an intelligent and
fascinating musical career this woman has had (and has)!!! Her talent
and continuous commitment to craft inspires and humbles the rest

Saw this in today's TIMES:

NY TIMES ARTS, BRIEFLY
More Aid for the Arts Is Sought

By ROBIN POGREBIN; Compiled by FELICIA R. LEE
Published: March 30, 2009
Americans for the Arts, a lobbying group, plans to ask Congress on Tuesday to
increase
the annual appropriation for the National Endowment for the Arts to $200 million
from
the $155 million that was provided for the agency in the recent omnibus bill.
The
request will come on the group's 22nd annual Arts Advocacy Day. In the past
the organization has requested $176 million for the agency, the amount the
Endowment
was given at its highest financing, in 1992. But this year the need of arts
institutions
is greater, the group has said, and President Obama said during the presidential
campaign that he would request an increase. About 500 arts advocates are
expected to
meet with about one-third of Congress on Tuesday. Among those scheduled to
testify
before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and
Related Agencies are the singers Linda Ronstadt and Josh Groban, and the jazz
trumpeter Wynton Marsalis.

Pardon this shameless self-promotion, but I came up with 25 of my
personal favorite songs of Linda's that are either very much of the
country music genre or are on the perimeter of it, at Country Universe.
