Another
successful marching season has come to a close, culminating in a great trip to Scranton that saw the band finish
15th overall, including a 12th-place finish by the guard, a 6th-place for the
drum line, and a 3rd-place for drum major Michael Koehler. Mike has had
an extraordinary year, and this represents the best finishes for both drum
major and percussion in LHS history. I also shared with the band that the
drum major award is based not only on how well Mike has conducted the group,
but also how well the band responds to his direction. Therefore, the
entire band really shares in this success.
The trip was made even more special by a number of gestures on the part of our
great band parents. Mr. and Mrs. Purdy organized a terrific and
inexpensive lunch for us after the performance. This was no small effort,
and everyone in the band greatly appreciated this meal. The boosters also
provided beautifully decorated cakes in recognition of my recent honor from
School Band and Orchestra magazine, and I would like to thank everyone for your
congratulations and the many notes I have received. I have been asked to
participate in a brief award ceremony at the Board of Education meeting on
December 10, and the magazine will be released next month as well.
Four of our band members traveled to Louisville this month for the FFA
convention, including Ashley Hodgkins, Maria
Arrington, Jimmy Mercer and Catherine Dietz. Congratulations once again
to Catherine for her selection to be part of the National FFA Honor Band which
performed at this event. Go Oboe!
We are starting some new procedures with our Treasurer Lois Roney and her new
assistant, Toni Shiderly. Mrs. Shiderly will be helping us by coming to LHS twice a week
on Tuesday and Thursday to collect money and write receipts, and will also help
to keep our quota sheet up to date. While we will continue to take
deposits every day through the end of the year, we ask that you bring your
money in on Tuesday and Thursday as much as possible. After January 1, we
will only accept deposits during class on these two days, as well as following
our after-school rehearsals. This effort will help us to sacrifice less
instructional time for the sake of writing receipts, and we appreciate everyone’s
cooperation.
Our football team won their first playoff game and the band will continue to
provide a pep band for additional games played at home. We are asking
everyone to hold Thursday, December 4 open in case we qualify for the state
championship game at Ravens Stadium.
As mentioned in a recent e-mail distribution, we have a new holiday fund raiser
from Believe Productions, a division of Sony Music. We are selling their
holiday CD, NOW AND THEN, which features contemporary artists like Mariah
Carey, Macy Gray and Gloria Estefan along with older
artists like Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Johnny Mathis. The collection
is only available through
this
fund raiser and will not be found in stores. The discs are available from
Mr. Lloyd, will also be sold at our December 11 Holiday Concert, and sell for $15
each with students earning $7 toward their quota.
Speaking of quota, half of each student’s quota is due by December 15 due to
the fact that we are already sending in deposits on rooms, buses, tickets,
shows, etc. Please check the sheet in the band room for an update and
contact Mrs. Roney if you have any questions.
Upcoming events include our Drama Department’s production of It’s A Wonderful
Life, based on the classic Frank Capra film starring James Stewart and Donna
Reed. The play runs December 3, 5 and 6, with both matinee and evening
performances on the 6th. Note that the original date of December 4th has
been adjusted in case our football team makes it to the state finals. Our
Holiday Concert will be held on December 11 at 7:30 pm with a snow date of
December 18. The dress rehearsal on Tuesday December 9 from 2-5:30 is
mandatory for all participants. On December 13th, we will take a small
pep band to Baltimore to support our Academic
Team at their television taping.
Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving!

WOW!! What a
sensational year it has been so far!!
CONGRATULATIONS to the LHS Marching Band! You did a fantastic job this year – as
always! The Class of 2004 has made their
mark on the history of the LHS Band.
Special recognition to Mike Koehler for his outstanding performance as
the
Drum Major this year! GREAT JOB, Mike!!
Do you remember
(especially you freshmen
parents) when I suggested you sit up on the
hill during one of the August band rehearsals and then compare it to their
performance at ACC’s in November? If you
can
recall
how the band looked three months ago (Yes, it’s only been three months!) and
compare it to how they looked at the end of the season, you will be
astonished! What they have learned and
accomplished during this short period of time is amazing! I’d like for us all to take a moment and
thank Mr. Lloyd, Mr. Brown, Ms. Boehne, and Mr.
Thompson for all of their dedication and hard work. It is because of them that our students
excel. They provide the instruction and motivation and drill them so that
together they achieve more than they would individually. They make them a team! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!! Your hard work is greatly appreciated!
It is now time to shift our
attention to concert season, indoor season, and the musical. Just because marching season is over doesn’t
mean that band is finished. In some
regards, this is a more important time in the learning process. I’m looking forward to the winter concert on
Thursday, December 11th.
It is also time to start
selling program ads for the upcoming indoor show on February 7th. The money from these ads help defray (if not
completely cover) the cost of the judges for the show. This means more money for your quota!
Speaking of quota - if your
student is going on the trip to Disney World in April, half of their quota
(operating budget and trip cost) MUST be paid (or in their quota account) not
later than December 15th. We
are already paying deposits and making reservations for the trip. This is very IMPORTANT! PLEASE DON’T FORGET!! Chaperones payments
will be due in January.
Also, a reminder that the
election process for next year’s board of directors and officers starts at the
February meeting of the Band Boosters.
All positions are up for election each year. Have you thought about taking on a leadership
role?

Congratulations Mr. Lloyd
LHS Band Family,
It is with distinct pleasure and great honor
that I share this with all of you!!
Please join me in
congratulating Mr. Kevin Lloyd on his
selection as one of
"50 Directors Who Make a
Difference" in American
schools by School Band and
Orchestra Magazine. A
Director from each of the 50 states was chosen for this distinction and our own
Kevin Lloyd is the representative of Maryland. The nominees for this honor are not nominated by their peers,
administrators, students, or parents, but by the state music educators' association or other organizations it the music
field.
CONGRATULATIONS, MR.
LLOYD!!!!! YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!!!

Celebrating the spirit of the season! Please bring a refreshment and/or snack to

KIDA
CODE OF ETHICS
As you all know, our indoor percussion and color guard units
are members of the Keystone Indoor Drill Association (KIDA) and compete in this
organization's circuit each year. At today's annual KIDA organizational
meeting, we were told of an incident last year where someone associated with a
group (parent, student, or instructor) assaulted one of the judges at the
competition. While this issue has been addressed and resolved, all
participating units are asked to remind their staff, parents, and students of
the KIDA "Code of Ethics and Conduct". Below is that
information from the KIDA By-Laws and Rules. This will also be included
in our indoor guard program and announced at all indoor competitions. Please help keep this a sport for the
students to showcase their talents - not to show off individual egos!
Keystone Indoor
Drill Association
Code of Ethics
and Conduct
Considering the growth
of the Keystone Indoor Drill Association, as well as the entire spectrum of our
indoor activity, we must continue to earn the support of our viewing
public. These guidelines have been
established to help us maintain our goals of providing fair and equitable
competition, personal growth, maturity, sportsmanship, professionalism, and
pride.
The ultimate
responsibility for the behavior of our member units lies squarely on the
shoulders of the internal management of each organization. The various aspects of the code are meant to
cover conduct before, during, and after any Keystone Indoor Drill Association
event.
The use of
overt gestures or other actions to display displeasure with the results of a
contest, such as throwing equipment or items of uniform, the use of abusive,
profane,
or obscene language to members of other units, judges, or
members of the audience; the defacing or destruction of
property including their own uniforms or equipment; the
physical assault or threat to any person or persons, will not be tolerated
under any possible circumstances.
The Keystone Indoor Drill Association desires
a greater effort in displaying proper behavior when not competing, but still
associated with the activity. Any act
that would be considered illegal under the laws of the state or nation would
cause immediate suspension of the involved unit, and immediate investigation of
the matter (i.e. the use of non-prescription drugs, intoxication, theft, etc.).
In the event of an isolated
occurrence which involves an individual or individuals from a member unit, an
investigation will determine that a violation actually took place. A review panel, consisting of the executive
committee and group representatives, will further determine whether the individual(s)
or their unit should be penalized, and what that penalty shall be, and when it
shall be assessed.

Electronic
Mail Notice
LHS Band Family, it is time to transition from the
email list that I maintain to the next phase in our communications
development. When we only had 40-50 people on my email list, it wasn't a
problem. Now we have over 140 on my list and it is becoming a lot of work
to maintain. Some of your email programs are seeing my emails as
SPAM, and in some cases, these emails are directly routed to a SPAM
folder, not your Inbox. Also, some Internet Service Providers are
rejecting my emails because they too see it as SPAM,
Please visit our website at www.linganoreband.org and scroll down
to the bottom of the page. There you will find a window inviting you to
subscribe to the Linganore Band Yahoo Group. Enter your email address
there (you can do this again to enter other email addresses if you like) and
follow the instructions. If you don't already have one, you will have to
register a user
name with Yahoo, but it only takes a couple of minutes and it's
all free - no cost. I have been using the Linganore Band Yahoo Group (in
addition to my email list) to distribute the newsletters and it's working fine. Thanks in advance for your help and cooperation!
TAKE ME
OUT TO THE BALL GAME, TAKE ME OUT WITH THE CROWD -
The time is coming soon for us to take to the bull pen and warm up for
the 2004 Frederick Keys baseball season. Once again this year, the LHS
Band Boosters will be working the Hot Corner Grill for Ovations Food Services
at Harry Grove Stadium. For several years, we have worked half the season
(35 games) and another group has worked the other half of the season.
Over the years, this fine group of students and parents has developed an
excellent reputation with the management of Ovations and the Frederick
Keys. This year we have been offered the Hot Corner Grill for the entire
season. We addressed this at a recent booster meeting and as was agreed,
I have accepted their offer and have executed the contract for the LHS Band
Boosters to work all 70 regular season games, plus 2 preseason games, and other
special events at the stadium (i.e. WWE, music festival, etc...). This is
going to be an outstanding fundraiser for the boosters, but will require a
strong commitment on everyone's part to make sure we properly staff the stand
for every game. Peg Kase has also graciously volunteered to coordinate
the sign-ups again this year. (Thank You, Peg!) I need to ask those
of you not going to Walt Disney World (especially veteran Hot Corner Grill
workers) to check your calendars. The first two pre-season games are the
week we will be in Disney. I anticipate that these will be lightly
attended games and we will need about 10 people in the stand each night.
In order to ensure that we are properly staffed for these first two games,
we will accept sign-ups for these games at the Band Booster meeting
in January. Sign-ups for the other games will start at our February
meeting (as normal). BATTER UP!!!
