Hi folks, If you missed out on your chance to get a Slingshot organizer before Christmas, don't fret! We've ordered more! We are selling both the pocket size (4.25 in x 5.5 in) slingshot organizers and the large ones (5.5 in x 8.5 in) in a variety of colors. The Slingshots are created annually by the Slingshot Collective in Berkeley, CA, and include all kinds of cool features and facts not found in your average planner - radical/socially conscious events for each day, conversion charts, monthly overview calendars AND individual daily spaces, and plenty of extra pages for notes, addresses, phone numbers, etc. And.....the small are only $5 and the large are $9!! You can pick yours up at the front counter at the Little Grill Collective.
Enjoy your days, and be careful in this icy weather! Kendall Whiteway Little Grill Collective
Hello, lovely patrons of the Little Grill Collective! I hope that this message finds you all well and anticipating a few joyful and possibly much-needed relaxation and celebration days with friends and/or family ahead. This holiday season, we at the LGC are particularly thankful that you continue to support and patronize our business and other small local businesses in a time of widespread economic strain. Because of you, we are all able to continue to do what we love every day. Many of us who have been around awhile particularly enjoy watching your families grow and change. Many of your children who were in middle school at the birth of the collective in 2003 are now in college! We have watched some of you grow into adults and start families of your own. We are also very thankful for our own families. In the past year, we have celebrated one marriage and two births within our LGC family, with another birth yet to come in May. It's been a big year! We hope you have been blessed with as much joy as we have. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you our holiday schedule. In order to give all of our owners and workers some time with their widespread families and to accommodate everyone's needs, we will be closing after brunch on Sunday, December 21, and reopening Tuesday, December 30. We will be open our regular hours Tuesday (7 am-9 pm) and will be serving our all-you-can-eat Mexi night from 5-9 pm. We will be open Wednesday, December 31 (New Year's Eve), from 7 am-2 pm, then closing early. Thursday, January 1, we will open at 9 am and serve breakfast ALL DAY, until 9 pm, so that no matter what time you get up after the previous night's festivities, you will be able to have your Dooley or Blue Monkeys. After that, things will pretty much go back to normal, and we will be open when you expect us to be, and closed when you expect us to be. ONE more holiday announcement, and then you can get on with your day. Check out our Very Little Store inside the glass display case at the front door. Locally-produced Country Canner jams, Equal Exchange coffee, and locally-printed Little Grill T-shirts make excellent Christmas gifts! This year we are also offering pocket-sized 2009 Slingshot organizers for just $5! They are 4.25" x 5.5" (perfect for stocking-stuffers) and come in a wide variety of colors. They are created yearly by the Slingshot Collective in Berkeley, CA, and include all kinds of cool features and facts not found in your everyday planner - radical/socially conscious events for each day, conversion charts, monthly overview calendars AND individual daily spaces, and plenty of extra pages for notes, addresses, phone numbers, etc. Check them out here. Okay, ONE more, then I promise I'm really done. Check us out at the Harrisonburg Farmer's Market every Saturday morning. Give us feedback about what you would buy, we're still in the early stages. We'll have lots of crafts out this weekend, so come do some Christmas shopping! Happy holidays to all and to all a good night! LGC

Hello friends,
After a rather extensive period of dormancy, the group is back! (It
sort of got lost in the shuffling of people and positions - sorry
about that.)
First, a few announcements:
1. We will be serving brunch Easter Sunday (March 23) from 9am-2pm.
Come join us! Bring your traveling friends and families!
2. Our Wednesday night Indian special is undergoing some
construction. I know there are those among you who love the Indian
plate and are die-hard supporters, but we have come to the decision
that it is time for a change, to keep all parties interested. Every
relationship needs some variety to keep it fresh! We will have new
and exciting dinner specials changing every week, primarily focusing
on local, seasonal foods. We love to support our local farmers, and
we want to pass that appreciation on to you. The quality of local
fruits and vegetables in their natural growing seasons is far superior
to that of produce trucked across the country, or the world!
3. Check out our Very Little Store in the glass case below the cash
register. We have Equal Exchange coffees and teas, local maple syrup,
and Country Canner jams for sale. We also offer things like local
free-range eggs, hummus, and picante for you to take home. If there's
something on our menu that you love but don't see advertised for
retail sale, just ask! We are more than willing to be accommodating
if it's at all possible.
Okay, enough business. Here's our exciting entertainment schedule for
March!
14th - The LGC's own Bethro Smalls, with Mat Callahan & Yvonne Moore -
a night of acoustic folky goodness. Check out Mat and Yvonne at
http://www.matandyvonne.com/
21st - Jay Punn & Morwenna Lasko - phenomenal violin-guitar duo
hailing from Charlottesville - if you've never heard them, they are
WELL WORTH a listen. Check them out at
http://www.myspace.com/morwennajay or http://www.mojamusic.net/
28th - Accordian Death Squad - gypsy klezmer circus music. They've
convinced me that every band should have an accordian. Check them out
at http://www.myspace.com/accordiondeathsquad
Alright! Consider yourself updated!

We've lined up some pretty exciting music this month, please come on by and check it out!
Friday, June 2nd: Natalia Zukerman, 8PM, $5 Natalia Zukerman has a sound that's strong yet delicate, gentle yet insistent. You can call the music she makes folk if you want, but there's jazz in it, too, and blues, and a soulful something or other that you can't quite put into words. You want to classify her? Lets call it bottleneck country jazz with smoky come-hither vocals. Her latest CD, On A Clear Day, is so well written and has such intelligent lyrics that it requires at least two listens to get it all in. And let me tell you, folks, this girl can play. But don't take my word for it: "She has nimble fingers capable of picking upward of thirty notes per measure, and when she sings she can switch from scat to swoon in the course of a glissando." -The New Yorker "Her bright vocals can send an orchid into bloom, while her delta-slide guitar can open a beer bottle with its teeth." -Andy Friedman
Saturday, June 3rd: Brad Yoder, 8PM, $3-$5 suggested donation Brad Yoder is an ol' Harrisonburg homeboy now prowling the Pittsburgh music scene. You could call him a successful musician based on the standard measures of success, but Brad believes musical success should be measured in more than just the obvious ways. Sure, being voted "Best Solo Musician" in the 2001 InPittsburgh Newsweekly Readers' Poll is great, but the way Brad sees it, playing Poughkeepsie, New York and having a college freshman from Los Angeles request songs she's only heard via internet downloads is actually cooler. What matters most to Brad is having a fan base that ranges in age from 5 to almost 80, sings along with unrecorded songs at live shows, and generally seems to show up when they're most needed. Come on by and show him some love, won't ya? "Yoder is an authentic singer/songwriter who rules the Pittsburgh coffeehouse circuit." -Pittsburgh Magazine
Saturday, June 10th: Danny Schmidt, 9PM, $5 The cry goes round the sleepy town of Harrisonburg: Danny Schmidt is coming back for a show at the Little Grill! A former Virginia resident now situated in Austin, Texas, Danny's a songwriter's songwriter: with a literacy and complexity, and underlying humanity, rare in this age of sound bite attention span marketeering. His tunes are wire frames draped with sheets of poetry. They're not your typical Texas singer/songwriter colloquial Polaroid trail diaries. They'd make lousy beer commercials. And Danny has a quality common to all preeminent writers: he has his own unique voice. He doesn't sound like anybody you've heard yet. Truly. "Danny Schmidt reminds me of why I gravitate towards the singer-songwriter art form. With the gravitational pull of the sun, he is, perhaps the best new songwriter I've heard in the last 15 years." -Rich Warren, Sing Out! Magazine "He is hands down one of the best living musician/poets that I am aware of." -producer Bob Thiele
Friday, June 16th: Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart, 9PM, $5 Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart met for the first time 1991 at a songwriters night in Nashville TN. They knew that night it was one of them things that are just meant to be. They were married in 1992. Stacey Earle's first show was on an arena stage in Sydney, playing rhythm guitar in her brother's band, Steve Earle & the Dukes, on "The Hard Way" tour in 1990. She spent about a year and a half on tour with her brother, and then returned to Nashville to start a career of her own as a country/folk singer/songwriter. Mark's musical schooling included playing in the School of Honky Tonks and Beer Joints in and around Nashville by age 15 in his Dad's band. Mark was in off the road when he met Stacey, and the two have been playing together since. Their songs are the diaries of their life, good times and bad, completing the love they have. They share the full load together of getting by, day by day. "Both talented songwriters and performers ... Imagination and emotion, along with humor, are key elements of their songs…" -Dirty Linen
Hello friends of the Little Grill and Little Store...
I just wanted to let you all know that some folks in the community
have been meeting regularly to discuss turning the Little Store
Collective into a consumer co-op. We're really excited about the
idea, and it's come time for us to find out who else in the community
might be excited about it too. So SUNDAY MARCH 5th @ 4:30 PM we're
holding a community interest meeting at the Little Grill. We're trying
to get as many people there as possible to see if it's a feasible
dream, so come if you can! If you're interested but can't make it or
have any other questions, please contact harrisonburgcoop@... or
call Mariana @ 540-434-2625. Thanks!

the half days to try something new and fun with our music scene. We're
calling it the ENDLESS SUMMER THROWDOWN, and we've decided to book
some of our most popular music acts during the nights that the
restaurant will be closed, so that the whole space can be dedicated to
and focused on some great live music. The lineup is as follows:

******
Saturday August 6th - Jackass Flats, 8PM, $5

Hey everyone!
I hope you've all been having some wonderful summers. I'm sure many of
you already know this, but this whole week the Little Grill is CLOSED
so that we can work on some major projects, do some deep cleaning, and
run workshops for the worker/owners. We've been pretty busy here, and
we appreciate your understanding and apologize for the inconvenience.
We'll be open again on Tuesday, July 19th.
Also, starting Friday, July 29th and running until Saturday, August
13th, the Little Grill will be open for BREAKFAST AND LUNCH ONLY. On
weekdays and Saturdays we will be open at 7AM and closing the kitchen
at 2:30PM, and we'll be open our normal Sunday Brunch hours of 9AM-
2PM.
We're taking advantage of the half days to try something new and fun
with our music scene. We're calling it the ENDLESS SUMMER THROWDOWN,
and we've decided to book some of our most popular music acts during
the nights that the restaurant will be closed, so that the whole space
can be dedicated to and focused on some great live music. The current
lineup is as follows:
Friday August 5th - The Furnace Mountain Band, 8PM, $5
Saturday August 6th - Jackass Flats, 8PM, $5
Friday August 12th - Devon Sproule, 8PM, $5

listening experience we have to offer. It'll be a guaranteed great
time.
(Speaking of our music scene, the Daily News Record did a feature on
us in Escape magazine last Thursday. This link will probably not work
when the new Escape comes out on Thursday, but if you haven't read it
yet, check out the story they did on our music here:
http://www.dnronline.com/EscapeStory2.asp)
And last but certainly not least, we're making the final push now to
open THE LITTLE STORE COLLECTIVE! We've been working since January to
open a small grocery store where we can sell local produce and breads,
bulk foods, natural foods, free range meats and eggs, and much more.
The store is located at 434 North Main Street in the Roses Shopping
Center. Our target date for the Grand Opening is **July 25th**,
barring any extreme circumstances. I'm sure I'll end up sending you
another email to announce the Grand Opening once it's been cemented
and confirmed. We're excited to realize this dream we've had, and we
hope you'll be excited to come support us!
Well, thanks for reading all this. It was long, but it was chock full
of important information. Be sure to check out the other bands we have
coming this month and next, and we hope to see you back in the
restaurant soon!
Peace,
Doug
Hey everyone! We've got some exciting shows coming up this month:
TONIGHT June 10th:
Furnace Mountain Band
The intention at the heart of the Furnace Mountain is the sharing of
music as a celebration of life between friends and loved ones alike.
We certainly can't find fault with a goal like that, especially when
you have someone like "Fiddly Dave" VanDeventer at the helm. You
might have seen Fiddly Dave play with Magraw Gap, David Via & the
Corn Tornado, Leftover Salmon, Hypnotic Clambake or Keller Williams,
to name a few. Add Morgan Morrison on the bouzouki and you have all
the makings of a powerful and unique musical experience not to be
missed.
9PM $5
TOMORROW NIGHT, June 11th:
Alex Albrecht and Arum Rae
You might recognize these two performers if you frequent the Little
Grill's open mic on Thursday nights. Alex and Arum both play the
blues, and they play the blues well. You know what's even more fun?
They've agreed to do a double bill even though they've never
actually met. Come on out and support some great local talent!
8:30PM Pass The Hat
