NOVEMBER 2002 (Austin, Texas) - Nashville singer-songwriter Tom Kimmel will
perform this month at the Live Oak Coffeehouse in a benefit for the Texas
Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty. John Walker of Dallas is the opening
act. The performance is on Friday, November 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the Live Oak
Unitarian Universalist Church in Northwest Austin.
Admission is $10 at the door. Gourmet coffee and pastries will be served, and
are included in the price of admission.
As always, the concert will be smoke-free and alcohol-free, putting the
emphasis on the music and the musicians. Three-quarters of the gate goes to
the performers, and one-quarter to the selected charity. Since the
coffeehouse is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, all of the money
from admissions paid at the door and season passes goes to the performers and
the charity.
The Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty wants to end capital
punishment through "education and action," as its Web site notes. Coretta
Scott King, the widow of Martin Luther King Jr., says, "As one whose husband
and mother-in-law have both died the victims of murder assassination, I stand
firmly and unequivocally opposed to the death penalty for those convicted of
capital offenses. An evil is not redeemed by an evil deed of retaliation.
Justice is never advanced in the taking of human life. Morality is never
upheld by legalized murder." More information is available at www.tcadp.org.
There are very few songwriters these days who can move from pop ballad to R&B
groove to folk narrative, from country shuffle to rock rave-up to gospel soul
without stumbling. Tom Kimmel can. And very few writers whose songs are
routinely covered by major recording stars can hold their own recording and
performing those songs. Tom Kimmel can, and does, and more. The 30-year
veteran of the music business has seen his songs recorded by Linda Ronstadt,
Joe Cocker, Johnny Cash, Shawn Colvin, Kathy Mattea, Waylon Jennings, the
Stray Cats, Richie Havens and the Spinners, among others. Tom's new album of
inspirational songs, "Shallow Water," is available through his Web site,
www.tomkimmel.com.
John Walker's songs embody the sprit of a new breed of Texas acoustic music
which is a true American melting pot without being quite Americana, rocks in
places while still being subtle, is alternative in a spot or two without
wearing flannel and winds up sounding pretty country without being a trip to
the Opry. John played last year at the Kerrville Folk Festival, co-producing
the Dallas/Fort Worth Songwriters' Campfire at the Threadgill Theater. His
latest CD is "The Stockbridge Sessions," released by Winter Twin Records.
Doors open at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 8, at the Live Oak Unitarian
Universalist Church, located at 12310 Ranch Road 620 North. For driving
directions, visit the church's Web site at www.liveoakuu.org or call 219-9008.
The Live Oak Coffeehouse's Fall 2002 season ends next month, with a concert
by the Sarah Pierce Band in a benefit for Austin SafePlace, on Friday,
December 13. Jealousy Motel will open the show.
