JANUARY 2004 (Austin, Texas) - The Live Oak Coffeehouse Concert Series begins
its 13th season with a live concert featuring the San Diego duo Berkley Hart
in a benefit for Camp Wolahi, a Southern California campground that was
destroyed in last fall's Cedar Fire. Stephen Taylor of Austin will open the
show.
The performance is at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 9, at the Live Oak Unitarian
Universalist Church in Cedar Park.
Admission is $10 or a season pass at the door. Gourmet coffee and pastries
will be served, and are included in the price of admission.
As always, the concert will be smoke-free and alcohol-free, putting the
emphasis on the music and the musicians. Three-quarters of the gate goes to the
performers, and one-quarter to the selected charity. Since the coffeehouse is an
all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization, all of the money from admissions
paid at the door and season passes goes to the performers and the charity.
Camp Wolahi is one of the campgrounds operated by the San Diego Camp Fire
Council, part of the nationwide Camp Fire USA organization. Camp Wolahi was
established in 1932 and was at one time a summer camp for girls and young women,
under the aegis of the Camp Fire Girls group. More recently, the camp has been
utilized by people of all ages, with a three-week session each summer for
inner-city boys and girls operated in collaboration with the San Diego Lions
Clubs
and the Police Athletic League (PAL). The Cedar Fire of October-November 2003
destroyed all of the structures on the 65-acre property, and the local Camp
Fire Council has vowed to rebuild Camp Wolahi. For more information, see the
organization's Web site at www.angelfire.com/ca2/CampFire.
Berkley Hart is Jeff Berkley and Calman Hart. The powerhouse duo combines two
songwriting souls with the fundamental guts of rock-n-roll. Berkley Hart
blend their distinctive voices and solid musicianship to create sounds founded
in
American roots rock with folk longevity and raw energy. Think The Band meets
Woody Guthrie meets The Who. Their debut record, "Wreck 'n' Sow," in 2000,
garnered them top honors at the San Diego Music Awards. With the release of
their
second album, "Something To Fall Back On," Berkley Hart kick it up a notch,
bringing together a full band for an all-out rock 'n' roll experience. It's easy
to understand why they've been hailed as "two songwriting gurus with a
harmony more powerful than moonshine."
Stephen Taylor has been charming audiences worldwide for more than two
decades. He has released two solo recordings and has performed thousands of
shows
from Miami to Boulder, Honolulu to Austin. A typical performance with Stephen
will include everything from thoughtful original compositions to rollicking
blues.
