MARCH 2004 (Austin, Texas) – The Live Oak Coffeehouse this month presents
Sarah Pierce and the Healers in a benefit for Amigos de las Américas, a service
organization that sends volunteers to Latin American countries to help local
communities. Steve Hopkins will open the show. The performance is at 7:30 p.m.
on Friday, March 12, at the Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church in Cedar
Park.
Admission is $10 or a season pass at the door. Gourmet coffee and pastries will
be served, and are included in the price of admission.
As always, the concert will be smoke-free and alcohol-free, putting the emphasis
on the music and the musicians. Three-quarters of the gate goes to the
performers, and one-quarter to the selected charity. Since the coffeehouse is an
all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization, all of the money from admissions
paid at the door and season passes goes to the performers and the charity.
Amigos de las Américas is an international, nonprofit organization that was
founded in 1965. After training for several months, the high school and college
student volunteers conduct service projects in Latin American communities.
AMIGOS fosters personal growth, leadership, and cultural awareness. Partnerships
with Amigos include organizations such as CARE, Save the Children and Plan. The
volunteers live in host communities, and actively participate in daily community
life; they help build latrines, water-storage tanks and fuel-efficient stoves,
and/or educate children and families about nutrition, dental hygiene, and
disease prevention. Funding is provided by the volunteers, their friends, their
families, and through self-directed fund-raising projects. For more information,
visit the AMIGOS Web site at www.amigoslink.org.
Sarah Pierce was born in Rockford, Illinois and raised in rural Texas and
Colorado. She has a wonderfully unique sound. Her music is a blend of both old
and new world sensibilities. The Los Angeles Times stated, “Sarah Pierce seems
a likely candidate for contemporary music fame.” On her new release, “Love's
The Only Way,” Sarah takes a step closer to that reality. With each song, her
lyrics daze with elegant poetry that carries the listener over wide musical
vistas on each soul-bearing turn of her incomparable voice.
Purveyor of eclectic, eccentric, acoustic music, Steve Hopkins’ decidedly
unique view of the world has produced some of the most original music on the
contemporary folk scene. His latest CD, “Just Another Day in Paradox,” is
proof -- anyone who sings, “When I leave this world of contradiction, I’m
gonna leave my body to science…fiction” is most assuredly looking at the
world through skewed lenses. Steve’s talents as a tunesmith and a singer are
matched by his abilities as a live performer. Alternately sensitive and bawdy,
Steve mixes humor, whimsical romanticism and social awareness to give a show
that leaves audiences laughing one minute and misty-eyed the next. His versatile
voice can rise and fall like the Texas Hill Country, and his deep baritone can
switch from an earth-rumbling growl to a seductive musical whisper in a
heartbeat. New Texas Magazine enthused, “Really entertaining…an excellent
guitarist and WAY funny!”
