MAY 2004 (Austin, Texas) – The Live Oak Coffeehouse this month presents Rachel
Bissex of Burlington, Vermont, and Stephanie Corby of Austin in a benefit for
Hospice Austin. The performance is at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 21, at the Live
Oak Unitarian Universalist Church in Cedar Park.
Admission is $10 or a season pass at the door. Gourmet coffee and pastries are
included in the price of admission.
As always, the concert will be smoke-free and alcohol-free, putting the emphasis
on the music and the musicians. Three-quarters of the gate goes to the
performers, and one-quarter to the selected charity. Since the coffeehouse is an
all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization, all of the money from admissions
paid at the door and season passes goes to the performers and the charity.
Established as a grassroots, community-based program in 1979, Hospice Austin
began providing services to terminally ill persons and their families and
caregivers during the summer of 1980. In 1986, Hospice Austin became Medicare
certified and expanded its service to surrounding counties. Hospice Austin and
its inpatient facility, Hospice Austin's Christopher House, have been accredited
since 1998, first by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations (JCAHO) and, in 2001, by the Community Health Accreditation
Program (CHAP). At Hospice Austin, the emphasis is on living -- living each day
to the fullest, in a comfortable place, free of pain and in the company of loved
ones. Our patients and families have the assurance that they are being served by
one of the oldest and largest non-profit hospice programs in Texas. We provide
family-centered, quality end of life care that emphasizes compassion,
independence, respect and dignity. For more information, call Hospice Austin at
342-4700 or visit the organization’s Web site at www.hospiceaustin.org.
Rachel Bissex loves playing and singing, and has had the honor of performing at
many great concert halls, church basements, coffee shops and festivals. She's
opened for many fab famous people like Ray Charles, Joan Armatrading, Shawn
Colvin, and many more. Her pals over the years include Catie Curtis, Rick Kolow,
Dar Williams, Karen Savoca, and many more who she's shared the stage with,
singing harmony and grooving on their great vibes. Rachel's poise on stage and
ease with her audience has made her a favorite at coffeehouses and at folk
concerts from Miami to Vermont. Her stage patter is full of wit and humor, and
the content of her songs is sometimes political, sometimes personal, usually
powerful.
Stephanie Corby possesses a rich, powerful voice that transcends the borders of
musical style. This soulful songstress has successfully fused her classical,
jazz and blues backgrounds into a distinct R&B-flavored acoustic sound.
Singer/songwriter Ellis Paul says the following about Stephanie's voice: “She
has the kind of voice that makes the waters part; loud sweet and soulful…she
could have saved Moses a lot of trouble.”
Don’t forget – on Sunday, June 27, we will present David Roth in a special
show, with a 7 p.m. start time. Admission is $10. No season passes will be
accepted for this show.
Doors open at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 21, at the Live Oak Unitarian Universalist
Church, located at 3315 El Salido Parkway, Cedar Park. For driving directions,
visit the church’s Web site at www.liveoakuu.org or call 219-9008.
