DECEMBER 2004 (Austin, Texas) – The Live Oak Coffeehouse next month will kick
off its Spring 2005 season, with an exciting schedule of performers gracing the
coffeehouse stage.
All shows will be on the second Friday evening of each month. Season passes are
on sale now, at $40 for five shows.
As it has since January 1998, the Live Oak Coffeehouse Concert Series will
present these performances in an alcohol-free, smoke-free environment, putting
the emphasis on making a connection between the artist and the audience. Each
show will benefit a local charity or service organization. For January, the
beneficiary will be the Westcave Preserve in southwest Travis County, a
privately operated nature preserve on the Pedernales River.
Christine Kane will open the season with her performance on January 14. For the
last 10 years, Christine Kane’s performances and songs have been a compelling
portrait of what’s real and what’s true. More on Christine is available at
her Web site, www.christinekane.com.
February 11 will see a split bill between Freebo and Jim Photoglo. Freebo, a
stalwart performer at the Kerrville Folk Festival, is perhaps best known for his
long collaboration with Bonnie Raitt, but he’s also played and recorded with
many other artists, including Maria Muldaur and bluesmen Roy Buchanan, Buddy
Guy, John Mayall, and Muddy Waters. He’s got his site at, natch,
www.freebo.com. Jim Photoglo is a veteran of many musical genres, having signed
his first record contract in 1979 and releasing his first solo albums in the
early 1980s. The singer-songwriter now makes his home in Nashville and tours
regularly around the US. Jim’s Web site, www.jimphotoglo.com, has not only
album sales, music samples, tour dates, news, and background, but also a series
of recipes!
The March 11 show is a split bill between Mary Catherine Reynolds and Emily
Kaitz. Both singer-songwriters are former residents of Austin who still return
to the live music capital of the world to perform. Reynolds now makes her home
in Oklahoma City, where she plays with a local jazz band and a vocal group,
while also pursuing projects in country, jazz, pop, and traditional music.
Mary’s Web site is at http://members.cox.net/shartelavenue. Emily Kaitz, who
lived and performed in Austin for 21 years, has lived in Fayetteville, Arkansas,
since 1998. Such groups as the Austin Lounge Lizards, the Therapy Sisters, and
Trout Fishing in America play her songs. Emily’s albums include “Middle Aged
Rockers Are So Damn Cute,” “Terminally Trendy,” and “Yuppie Scum,”
which give you an idea of the humor that informs her work. More is available at
http://www.musicaustin.com/folk/ekaitz.html.
On April 8 the coffeehouse will host Peter Mayer, the acclaimed Minnesota-based
singer-songwriter. Peter started touring full-time in 1995 and has gradually
amassed a dedicated, word-of-mouth following, selling out shows from Minnesota
to Texas, New England to Colorado. He has six CDs to his credit, and has sold
over 40,000 of them independently. His accolades include numerous nominations
for Minnesota Music Awards, and selections as a finalist in several songwriting
competitions including Telluride and the Rocky Mountain Folksfest, where he has
been invited back to perform and teach songwriting at the highly regarded Rocky
Mountain Songschool. Peter’s Web site is at www.petermayer.net.
The Spring 2005 season wraps up May 13 with a “songwriters in the round”
performance featuring Abi Tapia, Jan Seides, and Sharon Bousquet. Their
respective Web sites are www.abitapia.com, www.janseides.com, and
www.sharonbousquet.com.
Doors open at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 14, at the Live Oak Unitarian
Universalist Church, located at 3315 El Salido Parkway, Cedar Park. For driving
directions, visit the church’s Web site at www.liveoakuu.org or call 219-9008.
